I had too much fun with both altered beast and bloody roar when I was a kid I knew both games were actually pretty cheesy but it was just the kind of dumb fun to be had with friends over playing video games on the weekend 😂
Do you suddenly get a rush of the smells and vibes of where exactly you were when you heard it in the arcade? It was Knoebels Grove arcade in the early 90s for me.
Imagine a new version of this where you could actually transform into a honey badger, like was mentioned in the video. I’d bet you that alone would make it a smash hit!
When I first played Altered Beaat when I was 12 in 91 I thought it was the most awesome game I’d ever played. Went back & played it again at the age of 20 in 99 & realized the game didn’t hold up at all, & was damn near unplayable. That game aged very terribly lol.
I was around 9 the first time I saw it at a friend's house. Same thing, blown away. Played it on the Sega Collection and yeah... Aged about as well as milk.
Because at that time, it was the most awesome game ANYONE had ever played 😂😂 i had it on Amiga so essentially i got to enjoy the arcade version of it and many other awesome games from home for a few years. Check out the Amiga version of Shadow of the Beast too. Also we got the earliest releases of these games. Amiga was a miracle of a computer, about 5 years ahead of it's time. I will never fully understand how it lacked having enough support to sustain the company. It was the best in it's class and could sport like 4,000 colors on screen simultaneously and play multi-layered music which was worlds beyond what SNES and Sega Genesis could do (Oh i still had both lol). It was the computer that the arcade versions of so many great games was created on. One more bit of homework for ya, check out Hybris on Amiga. I challenge you to find a better top down vertically scrolling shooter but the MUSIC... ill put it this way its my ringtone and notification sound. I challenge you to find better chip music, it literally ROCKS. You'll see why i said literally lol. Have fun! And happy gaming!
I remember coming home with my new Genesis and popping in Altered Beast to give the new machine a workout. About 20 minutes later I finished it. I then went back to the store and picked up Sonic. I loved that game.
I remember the original well. I think alot of people do. It was a launch title packed in with the Megadrive on launch so alot of people got this one basically free when they bought a mega drive. There's no arguing that it was nothing really very special game wise but because so many people played it in the way I mentioned it's taken its place in gaming history. Games for the Megadrive were expensive so it's highly likely most people only had this one and maybe 2 others when they first got a Megadrive. It's fairly easy to beat so I would imagine it's been played all the way through by more gamers than almost any other game.
I know it is probably a coincidence, but the developer being named 3d6 Games makes me wonders if they were GURPS fans. GURPS is the Generic Universal RolePlaying System, a tabletop RPG rules set built around rolling three six-sided dice.
Altered beast wasn't bad. It just shows its age. There were other side scrolling beatem ups that took place on a single plane like this and they don't get talked about nearly as much as altered beast.
@@Linklex7 it was pretty awesome when it first came out in arcades. Its just an old game. You can't fairly compare it to things like final fight it tmnt because those are newer games even games like golden axe and michael jackson's moonwalker were newer games that looked better.
I always thought Altered Beast was pretty crappy, I think if it wasn't for those "blasting" Genesis/MegaDrive ads on tv at the time(like:" WOW look at that! The guy is morphing into a wolf with flame...so rad! I MUST play it!") it would have fall into oblivion. Sega should have done something like Contra for the NES, maybe not arcade-perfect graphics but with a 10 times better gameplay. Also there is a NES bootleg of AB wich is pretty solid: really good music and few more levels. This one I don't know, I'm not really a fan of pre-rendered graphics(I think only Rare really nailed this weird style).
As a non-native English speaker, I had absolutely no idea Altered Beast was about Greek mythology (crosses weren't a thing at the time). It was just creepy as f*** with muscly men punching zombies and monsters with muted colors and a somewhat morbid soundtrack which was kind of hypnotic. I played a lot of it. Needless to say no other game quite caught that atmosphere. Especially not that Play-Doh thing.
Great job on explaining the history of the game. I developed a remake called Altered Beast Fangame, where I created a new storyline. In this version, the protagonist must face Neff, who escapes to another dimension. Players will have to complete three modes to finally defeat him. I hope everyone experiences this new adventure! 🔥 🎮 🌌 🦊 🗡️ 👾
The original was light years ahead! the Megadrive was a great conversion at the time! Let's hope for some hack that makes it arcade-like, like Golden Axe Plus
I wanted this, so I was super excited when it was released! Great game for sure. I still have the box and instruction manual as well. I've primarily played it through the Gameboy Advance Player for the GameCube. I prefer that to the link cable.😅
The original Altered Beast was more a showcase piece than a fully fledged game itself. Nevertheless, it was brilliant in many aspects. The moody atmosphere and dark soundtrack were incredible for the time and I just loved it as a kid.
Altered Beast is better in your memories that it is in real life. Playing it again as an adult is like watching one of your favorite cartoons and realizing that it didn't age well.
The OG AB was a perfect arcade game. Fun for 10 to 20 minutes and a few quarters. The funny thing about the early Genesis is players discovered why some games are better in the arcade, either because of the shallow gameplay or the fact that you could beat the game by just pumping in more quarters. AB was both. The graphics were eye popping for the time but looking back, the actual gameplay(especially while human) was pretty stiff and clunky. Also, once you beat it...then what? That said, it was a great choice for an early pack in game because the Genesis was really pushing the "arcade quality at home" line, and the Genesis version did look alot like the arcade version. I have SO much nostalgia for AB then even back reboots are welcome. IIRC announced another AB game coming in the future, which hopefully will be a reboot of the original with modern graphics and smoother gameplay.
The original arcade Altered Beast was like an audio-visual comic book - not very complex, but expertly crafted and handed to the player on a neatly prepped canvas and without blemishes. That gameboy thing, in comparison, - is like a promising sketch which was made on a toilet paper...after it was used. And that was what the player received. It flopped, it died and was flushed into the sewers of time. And good riddance.
I was first introduced to Altered Beast at the local Pizza Hut, and I threw a lot of quarters into that machine. There were many games back then that old school players wished would get sequels, but never did. Very few characters have survived the challenge of remaining relevant across decades and many of them have to practically reinvent themselves to do so. Speaking only for myself, I am a fan of this game (though I am not really a fan of the art style) and love the new animal forms. However, the beat'em up genre has fallen out of style as a whole, so while I would welcome a new Altered Beast (and Golden Axe) game if done correctly, I have my doubts that anyone who could do it would do so.
Never played GameBoy but 1992-1995 was nothing but Sega Megadrive for me and I could buy the game really, REALLY cheap, lol. Thanks for the nostalgia! 1:01 so funny. 😜👍
Someone should hack the original "Altered Beast" by retrofitting all of the content of the GBA sequel into the Genesis game, providing the GBA content is graphically redesigned to fit into the Genesis title's art style.
I played this game at the time and I think it will be a bad game, if not on the contrary it preserves the bases of the original game having many more transformations and many more levels. I still don't understand how some continue to criticize it as a bad game if not quite the opposite, it is an excellent game and an excellent continuation of the original arcade.
I honestly love this game but its very hard, which it had cheats ive yet to beat it and i doubt i would have enjoyed it as an kid wish this series would get more love
a little clickbaitish title says "reboot" that made me click on this video in the first place ...if it correctly said sequel i most likely wouldn't have clicked on
They really dropped the ball on Altered Beast Guardian of the Realms. If it wasn’t for the bad aesthetics and tedious pacing, it could’ve been a decent game and classic as much the original. Maybe with a more developed plot, too.
Ok Shenmu 3 for under $3 is a pretty good deal, but I just got Soul Calibur 6 + all DLC for $13 and Castlevania Symphony of The Night for $3.50 on XBox One and I didn't even need a code. Granted IDK of the deal is good for Series X but I don't see why it wouldn't be. 😅👍

Looks like something that might've come out on 32X in another timeline
I would say the Genesis 32X looks way more impressive than Gameboy Advance....
@@demonology2629 Their 2D capabilities are very similar tbh. GBA actually has a higher color count.
Altered Beast was awesome when it was new.
😄👍
"welcome to your doom" is still burned in my mind till day.
Anyhow between the Genesis/Arcade version and PS2 I would take the old school.
“Welcome to your doom” is how I feel after Taco Bell and I have to visit the bathroom

Zeus: Arise from your grave
Hero: buster wolf

I'm glad we got a sega genesis version people just don't appreciate what they have in the 80s and 90s
Cause they don't have save games. Kids these days would never play a game that you are forced to start from scratch.
@MrSpunky1133 they don't want to spend time understanding the game
Wow I was a bigger fan of altered beast then I was for sonic but never knew there was a gba sequel. I got to play it
I played altered beast alot as a child. If i had heard of this game i would have wanted it.
I will not stand for this Altered Beast slander.
Altered Beast had a cool aesthetic. That really why I occasionally came back to it back in the day
It never really worked as a home game. Some of these characters would be fun to play in a more golden axe / streets of rage style beat em up though.
look up “Metamorphic Force” it’s pretty much the unofficial sequel to Altered Beast
@@Bingo_the_Pug Nice! And I see THGM did a video on it too...strange it didn't come up here...
The original was badass, and this new one looks just as good!
Hope for a 2D Reboot/Remake, with Serious Tones, now with Sega looking into their Dormant IPs
IIRC didn't Sega announce a number of new games with classic IPs, including Altered Beast in the last few months?
Before Sonic, Altered Beast made me want a Sega.
Me and my brother would play the crap out of Altered Beast. It was a really cool game. Yes, it was short, but it was so hilarious too.

The Advance played so much better in hand than the Switch. I hate these little buttons. I can't even play for an hour before my hands cramp.
