Flashback, quest for identity and X-Men 2, Soleil (Crusader of Centy/Ragnacenty) Aladdin and the Lin King ! I can think about others one, but those alongside original Sonic and Street of Rage were some of the games I had the most fun with.
I can honestly say Street Fighter Special Champion Edition blew my mind. I was astonished at how us Sega Genesis owners can now play Capcoms revered arcade hit at home. The sound was scratchy, but the great arcade gameplay was intact and since I had 4 six button controllers it was even more fun. I didn’t really like playing SF games on snes because of the shoulder buttons. All the punch and kick buttons were lined up in a row on the 6 button controllers. Shinobi 3 blew my mind as well, I friggin’ love that game.
I remember when Castlevania Bloodlines came out. I was a huge fan and loved the NES and SNES entires (especially the elobarate III and epic IV). They were wise to create an entry with a more contemporary look and feel, which set it apart while still retaining it's gothic atmosphere. The biggest complaint was the length. At only six levels the game sounds short, even though those levels are fairly long. And the effects and spectacle truly made it a memorable experience and one of my favorite Genesis games.
Red Zone on Genesis shattered my tiny brain back then. the way the chopper would push around the smoke sprites in real time was mind melting. still find it fascinating today.
The Mega Drive certainly surprised many people who had written it off against the SNES much to their folly and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is better than all the other Sonic games.
This was a fantastic watch! Played the heck out of Toy Story when I was younger; remember it being a lot more difficult than I thought it should be. Also loved Sonic & Knuckles
If I remember correctly, Street Fighter 2 was Nintendo exclusive, but the loophole that allowed Street Fighter 2 on Sega and PC Engine is that Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition were considered 2 different games. That's why SNES got Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo Hyper Fighting, the PC Engine got Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition, and the Genesis/Mega Drive got Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition.
Ive been buying bucket-list games ive never owned for the Genesis before they get even more expensive. Sunset Riders, Rolling Thunder 2 and 3, Shadow Dancer(shinobi 2), Gauntlet 4, Cru Ball (with the motley crue soundtrack). I love them all👍
I wish I had experienced this back in the day. My stepbrother had a Genesis and was rather stingy with it so I didn't get to experience a great ton during the Genesis' heyday, but I can tell from playing it a decade or two down the line that it probably would've really hooked my younger self.
That’s the kind of thing a cool OG gamer from back in the day would do. Wish I knew you growing up. Kids at my school weren’t that hip. I think I tried to do this myself but I didn’t have the headphone out genesis, and my tape didn’t have rca in … or something . I definitely wish I had done this back then .. top comment .
Yeah I agree the sega mega drive games were great but they weren’t playing as the arcade cause the console was a 16 bit graphics and still today you’ll find these games in 16 bit digital instead of arcade version
I enjoy reveling in the fact that I can beat so called “difficult” Genesis games like “Batman and Robin,” “Comix Zone” and “Ghouls and Ghosts.” Now, “Earthworm Jim?” That’s a tough game.
There's actually a ROM hack for SF II where they improved the color pallette choices and fixed the broken sound driver so the voices sound less scratchy - even with the same exact sound samples (no increase to ROM space).
Good list You should check out The Phantom 2044, Target Earth, Weapon Lord , and LHX Attack Chopper. In LHX, you have the option to have views from different targets
I don’t feel I have enough real knowledge about video games but just wanted you to know you got my view and thumbs up Greg. I’m hoping watching you and others share will help me catch on. 😊 👍🏻
I would add to the list of amazing graphics and presentation games like: Thunder Force 4, Soleil (Lengend of centry in US?), Snow Bross (Almost pixel perfect conversion), Ristar, Dinamite Headdy, World of Illusion, Truxton (Great early conversion)
Dude I am digging your videos, enough to where I find myself excited when I see a new one. I watch a lot of retro gaming content, I'm enjoying your stuff as much as I do Game Sack or SLX. Please keep up the good work, the algorithm is a fickle bitch so please don't let it get you down!
I think the algorithm led us to the same place, as I'm a pretty big fan of both Game Sack and Sega Lord X as well. But, hey, good on you, Greg! I always love to hear other people reminisce about a very nostalgic time of my gaming career. Keep the videos coming, after one video I instantly subscribed. For these types of videos, I'll tell you, it really helps to have one of those nice calming voices you can fall asleep to, lol
@@TexasWench His voice is great, isn't it? He sounds like a kid from the suburbs, just like me or any one of my friends growing up. Good content + charisma. Dude definitely belongs up there with the good gaming channels.
Great vid. Had it not been for the Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune changing roadmap of the mid 90s, imagine how many great limit pushers we could've had for the Genesis. SEGA insisted that fans keep buying more hardware when their existing Sega CD could play demakes of almost every AAA title of the 90s.
I just couldn't and can't get over the terrible mono staticy and reverberating sounds that came from this system lol. I'll always choose snes to play on if available
Dude, dude, if you are looking for a mind-blowing genesis games check out Scooby Doo, and most importantly - Bloodshot! It's not only fps, with tons of weapons but with split screen deathmatch and split screen co-op. I had tons of fun with cousin and friends playing it. Like people wouldn't believe me that it exists, untill I show it to them.
jurassic park first game and rocket knight 2 sparkster also very impressive. lost world was last game on system officaly with ultimate mk3 viruta fighter 2 md version.
System sounds better than half the trash out there today. Proper badass chiptunes, raw AF. If modern games are an orchestra, SEGA's 16-bit beast is 4-piece band lead by a Firebird blasting through a JCM2000
Because we used to be a proper country/world/industry. We can't have nice things anymore. Or even physical media, apparently. Though saying that I'll admit that I am absolutely one of those people with hundreds of Steam games and too lazy to want to get up and put a blu ray in the player. Sometimes I look back and wonder how the hell I put up with Badlur's Gate with it's 76 discs that you'd have to switch out from one screen to another. Yeesh.
Well I'd say many of those are visually pleasing games, some that I have owned at one time or another, but you missed a lot of the shmups. Thunder Force III, Thunder Force IV, MUSHA, Gaiares, Eliminate Down, Elemental Master were all visual powerhouses. For another genre Beyond Oasis has a great aesthetic, color palette, and animations; and we can't forget about Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3. Besides the visuals all of these games also have excellent soundtracks also, with Beyond Oasis being the only one that may be more of an acquired taste.
Comix Zone has continues. With every level you beat you get one. And you gonna need all of them at the last level. Japanese version of Hard Corps has 3 hits per life and it makes game incredibly easy. It's like they put 2 opposite level difficulties on 2 separated cartridges. I was blown away by the fact Contra HC has 6 endings or so, including the one where you can to join colonel in his quest for world dominance. Mickey Mania is beautiful to look at, but average at best to play. It's a constant with Traveler's Tale - presentation over substance, and variety over stability. I think Toy Story is their best game, but the levels you may like are mixed with levels you wish you could skip, just because coders wanted to flex. If I wanted to play a racing game, I'd pick a dedicated to this genre cartridge, instead of that level with RC where you have to collect batteries by hitting Buzz, it just drains your lives and your patience. And that Doom level, all you do is pick up aliens and shove them into holes. Riveting stuff. Add a crazy time limit to that and you'll get gray hairs at 12 year-old.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the various ROM hacks out there. They include better graphics and audio, adding characters cut from the original carts, whole new characters, and translations to English and other languages. Multiple titles from your video have these enhancements available.
Pre rendered graphics look good, but 16 bit looked so much better with drawn graphics. Dynamite Headdy has to be on the list too, great graphics insanely crazy and fun gameplay, but as most of the impressive titles of that era very difficult unfortunately. My other recommendations: Aladdin and Earthworm Jim 1+2 (David Perry knew how get the most out of the Genesis)
Aladdin was a big deal for its time (and a great game). The story goes that pre-rendered Donkey Kong Country was developed in response to the visual showpiece that was Aladdin Genesis
Lots of great games. My favourite is Streets if Rage 2. A few games are style of substance for me, like Red Zone and Batman & Robin. I really dislike Strider and the games on the Mega Drive by Treasure. Other games that blew my mind on the Mega Drive: Super Skidmarks, Shining Force, Story of Thor, Road Rash 2, Desert Strike, Skitchin, Dune 2...
Ah ok I see they count those thief stages as a stage when they don't on the Sega Genesis. I saw a walkthrough of it now. So in reality the arcade game has less stages in them with 5 while the Sega Genesis has 2 more stages in them making that 7.
Considering there was a Vectorman 2, probably neither 🤷🏼♂️ JP The Lost World was the last 1st party Genesis title. Not including the roster update sports titles WSB 98 & NFL 98.
A big oops, when I went to ad Batman on Sega to my eBay cart hit buy now then continue ....lol great game tho 😮 so I'm still laughing at the stupidity.... ...Already got Ghouls N Ghost, The Immortal and Strider. Thats my Huge Genesis Collection 😅....
Mega Drive is a MUCH better name than Genesis. Unfortunately, Sega's hands were tied. There was a US computer company named Mega Drive Systems, and they owned the trademark. Sega legally had to rename the system, but only in the US, so they used Mega Drive everywhere else. Music in its games was hit and miss. If you had a team that knew how to do FM sound properly, like the team at Sunsoft that made Batman, you got some really awesome tunes. Incompetent western developers that used GEMS, you got trash that sounded like the Master System could do better.
8:06 this Kanami game is routinely mentioned because every who makes these videos seem to reading from the same card. The game is so shallow. The graphics are bright but nothing special. It isn't fun at all. Really boring. It doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside classic games. But 8bit remakes like Contra: Hard Corps and Bloodlines, it fits in with it's repetitive and limited design which leans on spectacle to distract from a game which is 10 years old underneath.
I don't have rose tinted glasses regarding this game as I never played it until well into my 30's and I think it's a fantastic game. My favorite ever? No. Favorite on the Genesis? Not even close, but if I had to compile a big list of great Genesis games it would most certainly be there. This doesn't have to be the case for everyone, but I do think it's a little unfair to imply that people are "reading from the same card" as far as honorable mentions go. Hell, if it were up to me Shining Force, Streets of Rage 2, and Phantasy Star 4 would all occupy a top 20 list. Being that as it may, I recognize even those are rather simplistic certainly by today's standards, and retrospectively not entirely a huge leap above the interative nature of games at the time.
@@TexasWench you are the same as them. If it were up to you, you would reduce the "best" down to an finite a number as possible. When what you are saying is that you have decided, in your hive mind, that really 5 games is all you need to talk about at any given time. These games are basic compared to server games that run in ascii text exclusively on university computers you had to book time on to play. You just burn through it and hope for the best. I hated it alot.
@@iwanttocomplain Mm, that's a close one, but not quite on the mark. I'm not old enough to have played ascii games in university, but I did play a lot of Asteroids and Lunar Lander in computer lab during my formative years in elementary. Donkey Kong Jr., too, but I'm not going to pretend I liked it very much. As far as hive minds go, that's interesting considering I only had two friends in school who had a Genesis, and one enjoyed Sonic way too much for my tastes and the other I played Streets of Rage 3 with more than anything else which, if I'm to be honest, was probably not the best I could pick, but he liked the kangaroo character. As a side note I convinced him to buy Beyond Oasis on my recommendation after renting and loving it. I'm gonna throw Crusader of Centy and Mutant League Football out there and see what you do with it. Like interpretive art, I'm ready to observe a master at work and pretend to be awed. No wait, not pretend, I'm cultured and genuinely interested. Proceed.
"Limited by todays standards"? What a pointlessly redundant statement. Do people need technology explaining to them? "The graphics and sounds were sometimes _lacklustre_ but some developers were able to squeeze some amazing titles..." This is a confusing statement because to squeeze something amazing out of something and also say sometimes the titles were lacklustre is like saying the morning follows night or visa versa. What you're trying to do is talk down the console in relation to the unplayable SNES. I wasn't going to continue but you just complained that a 16bit game has graphics that "repeat alot". It's a 16bit game it weighs in at 1MB. This is not a good example of that either.
Bro, what's your problem? How old are you? Are you really trying to go after a dude for a completely unimportant statement? Sometimes reviewing my words I've recognized inadvertantly contradictory statements that wasn't due to a logical inconsistency but rather a smudged, and minor, overlook of my communication. Is one throwaway line in a 26 minute video so important to you that you feel the need to analyze a compilation video? I'm not even saying you can't but it seems like a really weird thing to laser focus in on in what is otherwise a very fun look back on retro gaming. That's weird. You're weird. Edit: I just saw your username. Checks out, carry on.

Flashback, quest for identity and X-Men 2, Soleil (Crusader of Centy/Ragnacenty) Aladdin and the Lin King ! I can think about others one, but those alongside original Sonic and Street of Rage were some of the games I had the most fun with.
Sega Genesis my favorite console of all time
My Top-5 all-time favorite game systems in no particular order: NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, PSX, and PS2.
The Sega Genesis is a Legendary game system!
Fun fact: The Batman and Robin game's composer is Jesper Kyd. Yes, the Hitman composer.
Sonic (3) & Knuckles is absolute peak Sonic, and one of my favorite games of all time.
Red Zone on Genesis shattered my tiny brain back then. the way the chopper would push around the smoke sprites in real time was mind melting. still find it fascinating today.
Final Fight has a certain charm to it, but Streets of Rage, that's where it is. Beat 'em up of all beat 'em ups. Yup even over Turtles in Time. 😊
Mercs doesn't get enough love. It was the first Genesis game I purchased with my own money and it was one of my favorites.
Dune: Battle For Arrakis was like nothing else on console. The music is still covered by metal heads today!
Dune 2 Battle For Arrakis was the first ever Command and Conquer, which is also what makes it incredible, still play it to this day.
The Lost World graphics were insane for 9 year old technology from the 80s
They're pretty cool even today!
The Lost World was truly mind blowing graphically on a huge at the time 32 megabit cartridge.
It’s tough for a kids game
A floppy disk has the capacity of 800 KB to 2.8 MB with a standard of 1.44 MB. LOL Good video. I forgot how amazing the Mega Drive was.
I remember being blown away by the graphics in Toy Story as a kid.

That's why SNES got Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo Hyper Fighting, the PC Engine got Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition, and the Genesis/Mega Drive got Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition.
Earthworm Jim!!!!!!! Loved that game AND the cartoon show!
Groovy!
I love them all👍
Strider was the ultimate shit. I rented it and I remember recording the music to a cassette tape :D
I think it surprised a lot of gamers back then!
I wish I had experienced this back in the day. My stepbrother had a Genesis and was rather stingy with it so I didn't get to experience a great ton during the Genesis' heyday, but I can tell from playing it a decade or two down the line that it probably would've really hooked my younger self.

Phantasy Star 4 is 24 megabits and I believe 32 was the biggest Genesis game.

Would I double my views if I double the framerate?
@@GregsGameRoom Yep!! Most bigger channels are at 4k.

Proceed.
@@TexasWench I can tell you didn't play it.
@@iwanttocomplain It or them?
And I'll thank you for the fun night, you had me going for a good minute. 👍
Lighten up Francis.
@@GregsGameRoom now I'm calm. Now you've told me what to do and called me a name in one sentance.
@@GregsGameRoom Why not just delete my unwanted comments?
@@TexasWench please stop complaining about my opinions unless you have a reasonable defence.
The video was OK, but there are better videos in existence. So... I guess it's pointless?
