hi emily! i've done digital art for a long time, but have always been intimidated by traditional mediums because of perfectionism and the fear of spending money on something that might not stick. watching your process video for gouache portraits is what inspired me to take the leap. i got a acrylic gouache art kit as a way to start since it comes with a workbook and references, and i found myself feeling discouraged by not always being able to match the colors and the "ugly" stage. your recurring message of focusing on value before color has helped me largely let go of my frustration when i don't get it right, which then has helped me maintain a growth mindset and push through. i recently learned the same lesson about embracing the ugly stage and i finally get what people mean by "trust the process." thanks for sharing your work and learning, especially when your work falls a little short of what you were hoping for. i love your use of color and your focus on shape--the somewhat blocky look is my favorite despite being really hard for me to achieve right now. i'm normally not one to comment, but i thought i'd share my appreciation for your role in my painting journey and maybe make your day a little brighter. :)

Hi there!! Thank you so much for leaving such a thoughtful and kind comment. It absolutely makes my day to hear how my videos have helped you! It sounds like you're doing all the right things- just keep going! In order to make good art (or art that we are personally happy with, because what is good art anyway?) you have to make a lot of bad art, like A LOT of it 😅 the best advice I can give is to just keep putting the hours in and don't think about your "failed" attempts as failures! The "failures" are necessary learning experiences. Thank you again for watching and commenting ❤️ Keep up the great work!!

@emhuesart I needed to read this comment. 💜 I keep being scared of the failures eventhough I mentally know that you learn more from mistakes than you do success. I still needed to hear the reminder so thank you. I am new to gouache too and trying to learn color mixing and I am trying so hard to get my mind to have the mindset that an ugly off color on the page is better than no practice at all.

that last tidbit about not fearing the 'ugly stage' is pure gold.

I noticed that lately I've been fearing the "ugly stage" and you're so right!! It's terrible to fear it and it is useful to the final painting but I have to hold myself from trying to correct it in the moment, I don't know why I want to avoid it 😶‍🌫

Advertising agencies are always looking for a new look for a particular campaign.. It might be worth sending along color copies of your work to one you like. But they do work to deadlines remember,@@emhuesart

Ive been working on one hundred heads pencil. And charcoal mostly. But yesterday i used my color charcoal pencils for maybe 3rd time and wow! Just practicing and drawing and making mistakes helped open so much up. It was so much fun and turned out nice. I thoink

You're so right about the focused study thing. It has been nagging at my lately. I think its time to stop dabbling and focus. I can't wait for the final flip through of this sketchbook! It's looking awesome. 🙌

Wow, this really resonates with me as I’m so easily bored and will just from subject to subject, medium to medium in the course of a single hour!! The only thing I’ve been consist with is botanical watercolor. I’m really happy with my painting there, but I’ve been working on people and it’s really a struggle, but also where I find the most challenging. With watercolor I can get in a zone and not really have to think, but with people…my brain gets exhausted fast!! The struggle is real 😮‍💨

Thank you so much for your painting tips. I just started a channel and I never used Gouache before or brushed anything with any medium. It’s been very challenging but I love how paintings look that’s been brushed so I just gotta fight through it, again I just want to thank you for your tutorial, it’s helpful.

I admire your hard work, Emily, the portraits look stunning everytime and I can't imagine how amazing the 100th one will be, we are not ready for such masterpiece!! ;) I'm trying to embrace the ugly stage of illustrations too, it's very hard, I guess because we live in a time when everything has to be quick, but there's beauty in building the colors slowly. Through your videos I feel like I learned a lot about layering, so once again, thank you!

4:22 I think that if you do fight through a bad painting sesh, you could be proud of your resilience because you got through the painting despite not liking how it's turning out. And at least even if the end product was bad, you could be proud you even did some painting practice in the first place (or whatever medium you're trying to use). Cuz a little practice is better than none at all. Just something I wanted to add. Cuz I struggle with having bad art days and it gets me down and hurts my motivation

I've recently realised that I was focusing too much on the outcome and it was really discouraging me and bringing me down art-wise. It feels so good to draw something that I think looks good and it can really motivate me to keep making art, but it sets me up for failure and disappointment. I've realised I need to come to art for the process and not the outcome. Focusing on observing and trying to see what's going on and how to recreate it, thinking about form and structure and negative space and all that, that has to be what I'm here for. Since coming to this realisation I've been having a better time with art!

So agree that portrait painting steps can change and it is good to trust the process along the way. Portraits can be fun to try different styles, like more simplified details or realistic photo studies. 😁

Hi! Nice video! I wanted to ask about using Pinterest photos as references. Won’t it be copyright infringement if I share it online? Because the photo/shot from film etc belongs to someone else even if I paint it or draw it “in my style”-> as an artist I would be profiting from ad revenue even if I didn’t sell the original study piece… If someone knew I would appreciate an answer! Thanks and cheers!
