    The main point will be "if you can not have home charge or a work charge, think twice and then again"! Thank yo for your experience share. I live in flat without any chance of home charge now or in the future and no permanent work place which allow for charge at work. This putting me off any BEV reality for two Years now and most likely will end up with an Euro 7 petrol ICE next Year when comes in power.

      Absolutely, so long as someone does their research and work out if it will fit their lifestyle and habits, it's fine. You've done that research, so can be comfortable with your choice. I'm just bringing to a close over 3 years of solely public charging, and it's largely been fine for me. It's enabled me to follow my desire to drive an electric car, so I've been happy to make the adjustments to my schedule - taking time out to charge up, but finding things to do whilst charging (reading, taking my laptop to do some work etc).

    Always good to see more real life videos like this.
    Honestly don't think I would have jumped to an EV without lamppost charging about 20 metres from my house. I want as many people as possible to be able to access it too - at least with the hope of lower prices from the economy of scale.
    Supermarket chargers have been good help too, while feeling quite efficient use of time while I shop.

      Many thanks for watching and commenting. Sounds like you've got a great local setup with the lamppost charging available.

    Coincidently, I live in Whitfield, and work nearby Bannatyne's in Folkestone and your videos are proper reassuring. I'm due to have my EV delivered in the next few weeks and like you, I won't be charging from home.

      That's great to hear you're soon to get an EV, and that you found the videos useful! Which one are you getting?
      Hopefully you'll find the Instavolt ones at Bannatyne's a little more reliable than I have. They seem to be rather intermittent at the moment.
      There's a relatively new one at the top of Jubilee Way at the Shell garage. Plus I'd seen a planning approval for a charging bay at one of the garages on the A20 just past the Megger building. So hopefully we'll have a few more reliable faster chargers in the area.

      Couldn't imagine not having a home charger for my EV plug it in as soon as I get home it's usually back to 80% by 8.00-8.30pm

      @@chrishart8548 Time of home arrival and SOC might be pertinent. Likely totally unnecessary extra load on the grid at their busiest time. You may well be adding to the cost of power generally. Far better to charge overnight when demand is lower.

      @@chrishart8548 do you let it start charging straight away when you get home? It's bad to do that during peak hours. You can program most EVs to delay charging until a suitable later time. Do you not have a cheaper unit rate overnight?

  • @oliver90owner
    @oliver90owner 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    By now, I think I would have found a local with a 7kW charger or even someone where I could use a ‘granny’ charger. Last time I charged away from home I used the granny charger overnight. I paid the home-owner handsomely over his costs (about 50p/kWh) so not much cheaper than stopping at a supercharger - but convenient as I didn’t need to spend time as a charging station.

    • @GuyGoesGreen
      @GuyGoesGreen  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for sharing your experience, great that you were able to get a consistent source of charge. Unfortunately the nearest slow charger is just over a mile from my house, so not possible for a regular charge once home. But certainly worth looking out for, especially from a service like co-charger.com who provide a service for homes with chargers to sublet them out.

    • @oliver90owner
      @oliver90owner 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is also ‘joosup’ - there is a very recent video, on the whole experience, by Andrew Till. Likely some more. My ‘granny charger’ was used at the home where I was visiting, but it wouldn’t stop me asking around if I was stuck. I might even consider renting out my 7kW home charger in the future.
      One place, we used to stay, would not let me charge (car was parked on her drive) as she thought BEVs burst into flames while charging. Others, staying at the same house, parked on the drive opposite, so a quick swap of parking spaces might well have got me an overnight charge. Changed circumstances means the opportunity won’t arise again, unfortunately.

    Really nice overview! How about a 2023 edition of this video? Especially as prices, charge point density and operators have changed a lot. Would be interesting to see the difference.

      It has been a while, so perhaps an update is due. There are several more charge points near me now, although some towns are still slow on adding chargers.

    Of course I have less than a thousand miles on the odometer

    Glad you see the benefit of using destination chargers to top up as you go about your day, it is a pity most are pushing for more ultra rapid chargers even if they are like weeds, appearing in some unwanted places that are herder to maintain rather than being strategically placed hubs with multiple chargers. Tesla can do it with a considered, smaller and well maintained charging network so it isn't hard.
    The times an app has shown a publicly accessible charger which isn't, behind locked gates or for customers/guests only pushes up the amount that can be publicised, but in realty there aren't anywhere near as many, and a lot of those you can access are badly maintained.
    I have checked out your spreadsheet and see that you have been charging at a lot at 79p Osprey chargers, it would be interesting to have an update to say how you are doing now, is it still cheaper to run an electric car?

    • @GuyGoesGreen
      @GuyGoesGreen  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely, destination chargers can really help me out by giving me enough to carry on for a couple more days with small journeys. I regularly have meetings in town less than 2 miles away from home. I can make use of a Connected Kerb 7kW charge point to add in 5-10kW depending on the meeting length - that's enough for 12-24 miles, so ample for the small journeys I'll be doing.
      I've been using the Osprey chargers locally for a while now because the are 100% reliable (for me) and there's almost always an available bay to use. However, the cost does mean that I've been pretty much running at close to 40p per mile when using those.
      I will certainly do an update, thanks for the suggestion. It's appropriate timing as I've just been able to move to a new house which has its own parking, so will soon be able to install a charge point. It will bring to a close just over 3 years of solely public charging.

    This was my experience when I had an onto car for a year, but since the network has changed. For example Folkestone now has 6 chargers.
    There is better reliability too.
    But why this guy bought an EV is beyond me. He really wants a Tesla.

      There are certainly a few in the area now, and if you travel towards Dover you'll find the EV Power charging station at the BP garage, which has multiple bays.

    Morning G3. Yep that will be me too, sip charging at the supermarket with the odd rapid fix.
    Are you not near those Fastned chargers Andrew Till uses? Thought they were Dover way... 🤔

    • @GuyGoesGreen
      @GuyGoesGreen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jude. I think you're referring to the ionity chargers, as Andrew has access to that network through his purchase of his Hyundai ioniq 5 (I believe). It's those I have had huge issues with, but didn't cover in the video. It's nigh on impossible to connect to them in Folkestone (and Maidstone) via the app - takes an age and hugely unreliable for me. I think he will use an RFID tag with those, so a lot easier to initiate a charge.

      @@GuyGoesGreen No, the ones I'm thinking of were definitely Fastned. The great big yellow Y shaped things. I thought he drove down to Dover from Canterbury to use them. Are you in Folkestone, thought it was Dover you were at? I'll see if I can find the video I'm thinking of and pop back in a jif. 👍

      Ah right, thanks for checking. That's a little trek from Dover, and not on a main route I take. I did see planning permission in for chargers at a petrol station on the A20 approach into Dover, but they're not built yet. I did use some at Shell the other day (at top of Jubilee way) and they were ok. Got about 55kW at peak.
