WIXOSS Nostalgia - Tales of the game before Diva Format

  • Wixoss has been around for a while, and there were two formats EN players never got to see. This goes over a few notable cards from my memories of this early time in the game.
    Wake me up when September ends! I was originally going to jokingly call this Low Effort Content, but I ended up putting way too much time into it. September was a compete mess of a month, and October is flying by as well. Next video for sure is the finale of the Mirror World design process, and I've also started playing One Piece, which is actually really good, so hopefully I'll be set to put together a video on that as well (also tried Lorcana, definitely not as good, probably won't bother with a video on that one). Hope everyone has had a good start to fall - hoping to ramp up video production with the cold weather keeping me inside more than usual!

    I remember getting into Wixoss back when Iona got her level 5 (the FIRST level 5 we've ever seen)

      Yeah... I like Diva well enough, but I do miss Selector-era formats as well. Still got some old JP decks put together for them.... maybe some day.

    Man, I played so much Webxoss at the time... I got into the game right as Lostorage was coming out (I found it through Lostorage promotion) and it sucked me in for a good 2 years. Those were the days

      Yeah! I was playing One Piece TCG's fan simulator, and got hit with so much nostalgia for Webxoss. Ended up tracking down the OST used in the github and downloading all of it. Fond memories for sure!

    Very cool to see the older formats. Id love to learn how things took shape as time goes on.

      There's plenty of other cards I have memories of, and this is pretty chill content, so I'll probably do more of this in the future. I'd love to do a full-blown history of Wixoss, but I was away from the game (at least in a competitive sense) for most of Key, and a series like that would definitely be a lot of work and probably still miss stuff since I can't read Japanese. So for now this is it, but stuff like this is fun so I could definitely see me doing more to make it a sort of 'casual history' type of thing.

      Kind of sad I didn't get to play more Key format, since from what I did play it seemed like a ton of fun, but if I keep going with videos like this there's definitely a few Key cards I want to cover as well!

    I really love every era of the game, but i feel like early to mid Key format was the peak of the game imo.
    Im happy the game is finally in English, and i hope eventually theyll start exploring older formats as the game grows

    • @tcgacademia
      @tcgacademia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I actually missed a lot of early Key because I really struggled to adapt to the pacing of Key - way less ener and more coin stuff happening. I only started to get used to the pace about halfway through - and by that point going back to the 3-grow-cost of pre-key felt slow and awkward. I actually really like how different all of Wixoss's formats feel.

    • @vollied4865
      @vollied4865 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tcgacademia I totally agree, I feel like early key to mid was slow methodical and more balanced while later key started to ramp up into the power we currently have in Diva, All Star is well all star fun as hell but still like yugioh a clusterfuck lol

    • @tcgacademia
      @tcgacademia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vollied4865 I wasn't playing at a super-high level, but for me the big switch was going from a format where you want to enercharge every turn to one where you could almost go the entire game without charging. It was a big shift in the resource and card economy. It's also fun looking back on early Key stuff from Diva format - like, what do you mean turn 3 in Key is basically just another turn 2? Why is it so easy to run out of low-level SIGNI?

    Ayyyyyyyyy Piruluk and Urith. Those were the starters I got when Wixoss first came out too. I had a friend who picked up a couple decks too but we kept putting off actually playing. Then I ended up losing interest when another friend started playing and started complaining about Osaki/Repair meta. Then I got into Buddyfight. 😬

    • @tcgacademia
      @tcgacademia  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Always the villain decks :) I was the same, except I never got around to trying Buddyfight (heard good things about it, though!), and started playing Webxoss a bunch while it was still live. It's kind of neat how many modern Wixoss fans got their start so early in the game. Makes me really glad it finally got its EN release.

    I have a lot of nostalgia for this era as well. I started playing around set 5 and the two starters I bought to learn the game with were Piruluk and Iona. I remember playing myself and realizing that Peeping Analyze was kinda bad, still wish Iona got more support for her Punish Smaller Attackers gimmick. Goodness I also loved the idea of Shark Spear, though I always thought it was awkward that she was a water beast and not an electric machine. Shout out to Diva Piruluk's 1/game. I don't take Piru to locals that often but guessing right and taking 4 cards out of someone's hand feels real good.
    Soap Summon is the Arts I have a lot of nostalgia for. I ran 2 in Tawil before you weren't allowed to do that, and still wish it had a place in All Star somehow. Fell off the game in Lostorage since I had no one to play and missed all of Key, but I did enjoy those starters with friends before Diva was announced.

    • @tcgacademia
      @tcgacademia  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I completely forgot to call out Shark's type disadvantage! Definitely made it more awkward, especially with good level 1 card draw like GRB rewarding type loyalty so heavily. Tawil was a really sweet deck, and I always liked seeing it do its thing, win or lose. I dropped off playing around the same time, mostly because Webxoss fell off the face of the earth at that time. But kept up with the starters as well - Wixoss starters have surprisingly good gameplay!

      Don't worry! Wixoss side-projects aside, I more or less have scripts done for the next three videos on the channel, and they're all crunchy game design topics. End of summer was hectic as heck, so the last few videos were shorter, easier projects. Back into November productive mode, so should be a lot more coming down the pipes!
      (Also, part 4 of the Mirror World design series is probably longer than the previous 3 parts combined. So that's taking me a while...)
