      Haha same. The raid itself was objectively terrible. Take the worst raid design elements of FFXI raiding (Dynamis 64 man instanced raids before they fixed it in that game) and the worst elements of WoW raiding (RNG stat vomit on gear that nobody wanted because the odds of getting a BiS piece were miniscule) - and also make it Not Fun At All. They fixed it sort of with Eureka, and fixed it better with Bozja. But the original Diadem was trash, and I'm glad they recycled it into the gatherer's paradise we know and love today.

    One that only still handful remember is the original layout of Mor Dhona during 2.0 launch. The tome stone vendors were located next to the atherite crystal, next to the tavern. It was under a temporary tent that housed them. This will never be seen again.

      Sadly, I was about a year or so late. I first got a ride to Mor Dhona in 2.4, so I believe that The House of Splendors was under construction, but I couldn't yet get inside. It was wild to realize in hindsight that it was different when I came back later on. Cue research and disappointment.

      ​@@DhalinMost of the people progging it were able to figure it out pretty quickly, because there's only one thing different between when you were there the first time vs post rewind: the LB3. And all over the place from the duty description to what the Minstrel sings about when you unlock the duty is talking about saving Haurchefant. Everyone from every corner of Twitch chat was waiting for that moment when you had to go and save him. The REAL hard shit to figure out in DSR was how not to die to Dive From Grace, Death of the Heavens and Sanctity of the Ward.

    There is another Raid as well @Rinon. 1.0 before ARR. Existed a full party instance where you battled a Nael Darnus at Cartineau, Those who completed the fight would be transported back to the entrance of Cartineau. And eveyrone online when the servers were shutdown got to watch the Pre A Realm Reborn cut scene. There are a few fringe youtube video's covering this but not many. And this happened way before the server relaunch of 2.0.

    I wish you would have mentioned the mesohigh tether granting awaken stack being a bug and shown the awoken plumes mechanic, considering the point of the video is the community not being able to see the intended fights anymore.

    "unreal" versions of the old ultimates would be amazing. Keep the originals, and give a gateway for new ultimate raiders, and have the harder version as well
    But honestly, even just upscaling the fights with each expansion would help. Probably hard for the dev team to balance them well, but in my mind it could help

    I cleared uwu last week and I loved every minute of it. It was a very fun fight and the adrenaline rush I felt when I finally cleared was like nothing else. Great video!

    i dont think a lot of underlying system QoL changes would be too bad on difficulty but it would be nice to see ability syncs for the ultimates specifically for the reasons you outlined. it does get easier because of potency changes and job streamlining. it would feel nice to have current class design saved and time capsuled at the end of an expansion to use during the sync'd raids and ultimates. unfortunately im sure it's already been discussed and decided against it due to the amount of time and effort it would take and the extremely small player count that would utilize all of that effort

    originally the devs wanted the ultimates to be unxyncable but the players went to the forums to ask the devs to keep it synced. to keep the challenge intact of these fights. So there is definitely a feeling of conservation that people want. However after a while the public for these fights thins out over time as more people clear these fights. So imo the fights getting easier does help the content not being dead. even if the clear isn't that glamourous anymore after this much time has passed, it does encourage more casual players to try out this content for themselves and having a feeling of satisfaction of clearing these notorious fights

      Uwu is already far more easier than release, all ultimates can stay synced with no problems. Try out uwu it's literally the door to this type of content. People can die massively, get rezzed and the DPS check would still be met (as long a you know what pressing buttons is)

      @@riquezounehonestly, uwu makes a pretty good introduction now, its a good gateway between savage and ultimate, and while it is disappointing it is easier, I am glad something like that exists, shame there isn’t really something like that between normal and extreme, closest thing we got was ultima unreal, but that one didn’t stick around.

    Frankly, I don't mind that much that past content gets easier - when it comes to older content in modern MMOs new players either just want to learn the story and go through it to catch up with vets on new content or have problems finding people to play old content with (vastly solved with roulettes though but still problematic for some content) with a few masochists like me who try to solo everything.
    Nature of MMOs, sadly, but nothing to be done by complaining.

    It's a shame that most of the Ultimate difficulty isn't going to be preserved with time, but I think what suffers the most is really just DPS checks because that's not really a thing in most Ultimates. Even TOP, the DPS check is not nearly as challenging as Week 1.
    What will preserve difficulty are the mechanics. Fights that require more "reactionary" resolutions will still keep a pretty steep difficulty. UCOB and TOP are 2 fights that I have personally found to be extremely challenging because finding 8 Players who can execute with high reaction to be where most of the problems occur.
    UWU, TEA and DSR are not nearly as challenging because a lot of the mechanics can be resolved by simply standing in the right place and flexing correctly with very few "reactionary" mechanics.
    If anything, if you talk to people who really struggled with any of the Ultimates, fights that require any kind of reactionary reflex or "using your eyes", they will mostly tell you that mechanics like Predation, Suppression, Party Synergy, Hello World, Wrath of the Heavens, Heavensfall, Tenstrike, Wormhole, BJCC, LC... those kinds of mechanics, to be really hard.

      Sadly in UWU, UCOB or TEA some mechanics are skipped because of high DPS so we don't even get the full phases

      I mean in TOP the dps checks are pretty spicy still. Remember, randoms vs. a team will always be different. I can PROMISE YOU that the dps checks will always be relevant in PF lol.

      I mean a huge part of the difficulty in those mechanics is just PF being PF as well, I prog in pubs so the lack of communication hurts a lot more then in a static where it's easier to make sure everybody is on the same page with how to resolve things

      I dont think that most of those mechs are reactionary ones.
      Most of those mechs the moment you know your role in that mech you dont have to react to anything else (Hello World, LC, Supression,Wrath).
      I would say a good mech that actually requires reaction ( but can be trivialized by call outs) is the ''predation like'' part of Run Omega , having to read the clones weapons and spawn order and final omega two times actually requires you to have the reaction to do that and act accordingly.
      Heavensfall is also a good example even tho you only have to read a single thing.

      dps checks is still 100% a thing in TOP. and "the dps check was harder in week 1" makes no sense bcuz u dont get any gear from this fight at all aside from an identical raid weapon with only one more materia slot. the dps check is still there and u still have to manage kill times to allow for proper bursting in the next phase or else u see enrage

    I've just begun progging this fight, and I was having this conversation with a friend. I'll never get to experience the puzzle-solving aspect of when it launched, because I didn't play the game back then. It's the same feeling as never getting the big reveal that Darth Vader is Luke's father... but I still enjoy hearing people talk about what it was like, how they felt, and getting some of that WOW secondhand :) Thanks for the video!

    IIRC, there are RNG patterns that occur in predation that prevent doing a center dodge into garuda's AoE, leaving the wall dodge as the only viable 100% consistent strat (that doesn't involve taking an aoe on purpose).

    I'm never going to get into this kind of content, but this sounds cool as hell! I love the puzzle element of having to play the fight and get the "bad ending" then going back and figuring out how to do things differently.
    Even as a "Normal Only" player, I can definitely sympathize with level/gear scaling essentially destroying encounters. Crystal Tower is the infamous and obvious go-to example for alliance raids that used to have mechanics but now basically just don't anymore, but even in the current raids in Endwalker we're already seeing mechanics get bypassed. Aglaia is a complete joke now, and the "balance" mechanic during the last boss is rare to see. This is still supposedly level-cap content for the current expansion, what the hell!? Makes me sad to think that new players joining now and down the road will just have no idea it even exists.

    I'm quite sure you're wrong at 9:29 as for about half the patterns for Predation the inside dodge for Garuda is unsafe/has a very small safespot. I'm not sure what the intended strat is, but knowing that Mr Ozma made the fight he probably intended something similar to the predation dodges we do.

    18:58 good luck finding PFs for unlocks or BiS gears though, sadly the moment a savage raid tier is not the bis anymore it's so much harder to find people to do it, especially since they probably spent weeks reclearing those fights previously. :(

    As someone who loves blind proging but sadly got to clear the ultis after blind proging it was unreasonable, seeing how the blind prog mentality for it was is really interesting.

    At the start of the video I thought it'd be A3S, but this video does spark a wider conversation about guide culture and how hard it is to get a blind prog experience if you do a fight even like a month after release for savage. I think UwU with guides being the easier introductory ultimate is a good thing because even garuda is way faster than mpst savage fights so it really does prepare you for what to expect wothout being as punishing on slow to prog, but I also wish there was a way to preserve more of the experience so the old ultimates dont melt so much.

    Another bit of interesting contemt that was removed: ARR had Koh Rabnatah, a researcher who got possessed by an Allagan mage and sent you on a repeatable quest to do the Crystal Tower raids in exchange for upgrade materials that became redundant. That quest was actually removed recently in 6.3 and now Koh unlocks a new Deep Dungeon

    I don't think it is a problem- nor does it need a solution. It is human nature to want to cling or preserve our history and experiences as best as we can- and live service games do something very special and provide an organic and fluid environment to create these events and gaming moments that are, essentially, fleeting-by-design.
    For what it is worth: efforts like this to tell the story capture those moments just as well as many other methods... and personally I'd enjoy seeing more for other progressions and events. Especially for FFXIV :3

    I really do appreciate the whole "gotcha" aspect with the primals and awakening, but if it comes to puzzle solving, I don't think anything while ever compete with True Heart in TEA. The amount of outside the box thinking you needed to do to solve it was pretty insane, and the difference of clear time between world first and world second of 3.5 DAYS reflects this really well.

    I'm close to clearing UWU and this was fun to listen to! I would say it is possible to get close to this experience if you prog as blind as possible, but then again that's tough to avoid when so much of the knowledge is readily shared in the community.
    Like you said though, class changes and scaling have made the DPS checks far easier. That's something that will never come back.
    Although, I've still found groups in PF that consistently cannot skip Ifrit dashes and been walled on Titan enrage despite having no deaths lol. So there are still people out there who DPS badly enough to make the experience authentic 😂

    No one in my static really wanted to opt for 3rd party tools to pass titan's awakening mechanic. But using voice calls would be pretty chaotic as well to quickly determine your position. So to clear confusion on solving the gaol chain mechanic each party member was assigned a number from 1 to 8. And all of us had a quick macro assigned that we would press when we were marked for Gaol which would post our number in the chat, and put our designated marker above our head, so we could quickly determine our position in the chain reaction from highest to lowest. It was pretty effective.
    I intended to clear it one day, we managed to make it to annihilation, but then endwalker dropped and interest in completion of the ultimate dropped out of view. But I doubt I will find a static that is willing to put up with non third-party tool methods.

    Someone who did Mario Kart Suppression -in 2021- (it was our first ultimate and the current PF strat seemed scarier for some reason), seeing someone else do it feels almost gratifying. We might have been 3 years late, but at least our pain was not unique. Russian Roulette with a million guns, indeed.
    BTW.... I remember hearing that the mesohigh tether awakening Garuda was a bug that they decided not to fix after people cleared using it. Anything to that?

    I wish i could do ultimates. but im in australia and i play on american servers because theyre the only friends i have. unfortunately that means i cant even look for a static because timezones so out of sync. i could create another account to play in a closer timezone, but it just wouldnt feel like im doing it on my "real" character

    I progged ucob in early shb, *before* the shirk and tank mitigation changes. when those rolled in pretty much at our mid point in prog, i felt like at least mitigation-wise, the encounter difficulty dropped significantly. Definitely the ucob i cleared wasnt the ucob that was cleared in stormblood!

    From what I remember of my own experience before it was worked out, Ifrit dashes were basically the same as in hard/extreme if you didn't wake him. Just 4 dashes lined up side by side in a semi circle with nail kill order having no bearing on anything.

    I did some messing around with Predation and dodging into Garuda's donut.
    There are 4 possible variations to the safe spot and they depend entirely on where Titan is in relation to Garuda.
    Sometimes Ifrit makes your pre-donut dodge different but the afterburner is consistent always.
    Of the 4 Titan positions, 1 of them is super easy.
    Another is a bit tricky.
    A third is very difficult.
    And the last one is actually impossible.
    There's no single safe pixel for when Titan is standing right next to Garuda.
    However, when this is the pattern, the 4th rune safe spot opposite Garuda is actually huge.
    So... that's a thing.

    i would like to add how even primal roulette was extremely brutal for healers. i cleared it as a SCH and before if someone was missing food they instantly died. if i were to miss my shields or a heal it was insant death. if someone from the group didnt use their asigned mitigation it was mostly death. when i cleared i was so nervous since it all depended on me appliying my shields properly and it was at the end of the fight so if i messed it up that meant start all over again XD.

    Its kinda crazy cause as someone who started like 4 years ago got to like level 16 stopped and came back last year a friend had us start UWU and to imagine it was HARDER is insane to me! In the entire time I've been playing I've never died so fast. The fighting started and I was dead within 30 seconds, I just about screamed. Like I understand wanting hard content but I think UWU is plenty hard and if it was any harder than it is now I wouldnt even dare touch it. I barely want to touch it now I watched this video and was like HUH. We progged and didnt even get past Garuda that night. Like I got my first thrill of learning new content with the last dungeon and trial and that was amazing I couldnt imagine doing like P9S blind cause even with the guide i was struggling with that.

    This just feels like massive clickbait, the fight is still very much there and doable. Just because it's not what it was doesn't make it gone. Like, the standard strat for Garuda right now is not the only strat (you were intended to awaken her well before the tethers, roughly the same time into the phase as the other primals). The strat used now is because it is easier on the healers (less intense healing) and dps (less precise kill time on the spiney). If anything, killing garyda even faster will foce groups to slove that phase a different way and make the phase harder on healers and dps.
    This is just the nature of a puzzle fight, they're fun, but become outdated quickly. For example, TEA is another big puzzle fight. At this point, the hardest part about TEA is not accidentally killing your doll in phase 1, after that it is pretty consistent and clean. Next expansion it will likely be in the same position UWU is now. That doesnt mean the fight is gone, it's just solved differently. Strats will change, difficutly will change, but it's still an ult. I for one plan to reclear it throughout Dawntrail to see just how much it changes with new consumables and jobs.

      At what point do you mention a fight that no longer exists? You say it has changed, and that current ults will change. It's just hyperbole that likely will instill fomo into people that won't be able to do it by then.
      As a fellow ult enjoyer, I mean this in the nicest way possible, but the title comes off as clickbait, which taints the message more towards "do the real version" sort of sentiment and I genuinely don't think (or at least I would hope not) it was intended that way.

    Great video! I hope that every expansion we get updated versions of older ultimates in the form of unreal. Getting to play the fights as the devs intended with the toolkit the devs intended for your job would make ultimate more fun than it already is. Maybe they could reward extra totems or some other form of reward to encourage it.

    Old FFXIV was so different, it could practically be it's own game, like a Classic version. The modern game has so much quality of life and job skill pruning, it's become a far more casual game.

    I'm part of a static that doesn't blind prog ultimates but we do blind prog savage. At the end of the day it's pretty casual so we don't always make it to the last phase of the last boss before we run out of time, but it is pretty fun. That said, we've had more than one instance of someone going rogue and introducing pilfered solutions and ruining the theorycrafting. It's really hard to get people to commit to that style of play.

    i started in EW and i'm new to raiding started in the current tier i have cleared UwU tho it took me 4 months even with the current guides out atm but i think you make a very good point in terms of the syncing but i love your vids

    I've been playing for a long time, but I've never quite understood what the difference meaningfully is between level sync-d gear and unsync, max iLvl gear for a given encounter, I dont suppose anyone could explain why having sync'd gear always equates to an advantage?

      So it has to do with substats, if you use level appropriate gear with materia you can't max all the substats, the material just won't reach high enough. But with higher ilvl gear, if it's high enough, then when you sync down you can max more of the substats.

    Honestly, I think this title is kind of clickbait. I didnt clear uwu when it was current content, but during endwalker, and im sure its different from when it was new, however thats true for almost all the content in the game. Every content changes over time, simply by players knowing the fight. If you play a new Alliance Raid Day one, that is a experience you can only get once per raid. After Day one, even if you dont know the fight, enough players will, and the fight is easier because of it. But i still wouldn't go as faar as claiming its a Raid that no longer exists. However, there is a fight in the game that truely doesnt exist anymore. The Diadem. Sure, you can still enter it, but its gathering content now, not fighting content. Once SE allows Gatherers to clear Ultimates, i guess it is a different content, but the current state is just what happens once it gets older.

      uwu completely blind is not the same fight as uwu with a guide. i did uwu for the first time in endwalker and I'm really sad that i didn't do it blind. its not that hard of a fight because all of the difficulty came from figuring out the puzzles. that's why its so different from every other ultimate and why its aged into the easiest ultimate.

    Currently I have a bit under 4k hours and hardest content I have done is some savages. Still very anxious to even try any of these raids because they seem so confusing to me xD this doesn't mean I don't want to do them someday, but not right now.

    This reminds me of Absolute Virtue in FFXI.
    Some of his mechanics had ways in-world of being stopped, but there were seemingly no hints to figure out how to stop them or even knew that they were mechanics to be removed at all till MONTHS later when Square Enix finally threw players a bone and told them that AV's innate regen could be reduced by half or even stopped completely if you killed many of the pets of the previous boss used to summon AV and [get this insanity] by targeting AV with spells IN ORDER [so, in FFXIV terms, Fire 1-Fire 2-Fire 3-Fire 4] which changed DEPENDING ON THE DAY.
    Not just that, but AV could use the 2-Hour Abilities of EVERY class, including the White Mage's Benediction, which was a full heal. The ONLY way to stop this was by using YOUR 2-Hour ability IMMEDIATELY after he did, which sealed the ability.

    I hope we can somehow get an ultimate that has a sweet spot of a puzzle that basically encompasses the entire fight while also being a little more mechanically interesting. I have not cleared the fight, I got up to Titan, but its just so boring on tank.

    Can you run the old version with min ilvl sync and suppress echo, if you want it harder? I know you can't undo job changes, but that's one way of introducing a reduction.
    If you have a static, you could also just set aside a set of level-matched gear (e.g. wearing level 70 gear) and give yourselves the artificial limitation of "No tomestones gear" and just grind out the dungeons/raids and crafted gear that WAS currently available at the time of the content.

      There is no Echo applied to old Ultimate fights. At the same time, the fights are already Sync to what the Max ilvl was on release. Fights get easier due to the job changes themselves.

      And also due to how syncing works with higher ilvl gear you can get multiple stats max moreso than you could have with materia in lvl appropriate gear. Also better food and potions. For example you are still getting benefits from food released in endwalker and the Mandeville relic compared to anything prior for the lvl 70 cap content of ucob/uwu

    I don't think the middle dodge was the intended strat. Titan's landslides cover the little corner ifrit makes within Garuda's donut on certain configurations. While you could mit Ifrit's afterburns to survive and generate LB, I don't think the design team EVER expects you to overmit and "purposely" die to a mechanic. I had to learn those configurations after seeing someone flex in UwU PF and they only did it during certain configs. If you're regularly in UwU PF, it's Ethel lmao. I and a friend drew diagrams of different Predation configs and saw that Titan just straight up covered the only safe spaces for Ifrit's afterburn and sometimes Garuda straight up spawns in Ultima's quadrant which is definitive proof that being in Garuda's donut will never work 100% of the time.
    I'm a little sad that you have to make a specific group of masochists to want to see Early Woken Garuda's featherlance mechanics.
    As for the stat problem, I just think syncing down equipment will never work. Even on the cloud test server with out crappy food and pots, we were still skipping Ifrit as well as having 64ish Ultima Aether by the time Ultima's charging their enrage and gets bopped by the melee LB3. You could probably try the thing I've always wanted to do: "min ilvl" UwU with Sigmascape former BiS with only Stormblood classes and Stormblood food. But I think the class buffs from current expansions will still make that moot. The closest experience to current but will always fall short.
    I've had stories from friends and acquaintances that in UCoB you used to have to Melee LB3 Golden Twice + Melee LB2 to even have a CHANCE at clearing. That's intense sounding but I don't think that it'll be for everyone. There will always be a "harder" Ultimate as time goes on as more get added in future expansions. And that's fine. I hear a lot of current raiders complain about how tightly tuned TOP is. I don't want UCoB to be like that again for everyone as I think the communities that have popped up helping people get their clears in PF and in dedicated discords are wonderful.
    ...As much as I want an Unreal versions of these Ultimates and have a thirst for the original, intended experience that you clearly have as well... I think that's just not possible. They've already moved the goalpost and will suffer some sort of backlash after the fact if they try to retune it.

    Like UwU, many content on release can only truly be experienced shortly as it was intended before expansions and patches changes, a Clear is a clear regardless, but one of the best and fav pure experiences of FF raiding, will have to be for me, Ultimate PF on release until it's cleared on patch for DSR and TOP i couldn't do TEA even though i tried in PF, there was not enough people back then limited spots as well. Endwalker and DSR dropped, I made so many friends, got to know many people, even got to play with old friends as substitute for their statics when people had to go away for day, it felt amazing raiding together again with friends from previous expansions statics, talking strategies and cheered each other on daily, seeing how other regions doing, watching streams, while not being required to show up for static, checking on other previous raid friends and wishing them the best, sad it's such a short time to experience as well, scarily enough, it can be hard to keep up with Wave of progression of hundreds of people, you could fall behind or miss out on prog everday you weren't in PF, so always on edge of doing your best, everyone unified through discords and cross-linkshells people from all DCs, even before DCT became a thing, had alts showing up in different DC Regions to help, so many great memories, will never forget, would do again.

    I do think this is a minor problem that could be fixed with a sort of version select for ultimates and to a lesser extent savages. Not sure how this will translate for most people but, when ultra sf4 came out they added version select so that in all casual modes you could play every character as they were designed at each expansion of the game. So you could in theory do a match between like vanilla Chun-Li and ultra rose for example. Now for ff14 that's a bit more complex I assume because it's not like it's just adjusting hit and hurt boxes but, instead going back over expansions and patches and re adding and removing and changing how skills worked and tinkering with role action system. And especially for SMN it's basically adding back a character into the game. That being said for level synch content an option to roll back to what the max level would be in that expansion would be welcome. Like one of my biggest regrets is not clearing content when it's new because you never know how your job is gonna change.

    Seems interesting to do one about TEA. And the solution is simple. Just put an "unreal" toggle in the game so you can upscale every fight to the current max level of the expansion and also a fixed ilvl from the expansion. And same for the hp/damage for the bosses. And solved.

      TEA is a really special fight to me because it was the first Ultimate where I actually got to participate in blind prog, so I'd really love to do one about that gladge. I agree, but I think it's somewhat of a pandora's box in that now Ultimates have been left for years without being "Unrealed" there may be backlash to scaling them up now

      The subject of the video is about how UWU's mechanics have changed a lot, so it's much more complicated than just upscaling the numbers to recreate the experience Rin is talking about. To recreate it there would have to be a whole different version of the fight, numbers aside entirely.

    While UWU has become more of an entry-level ultimate in difficulty, I think since the newer ultimates have broken new ground in difficulty for FFXIV, I think its really is okay that this has happened. Some may lament it, but Having a gradual ultimate progression has contributed to the improvement we've seen in the raiding community a lot. The barrier to entry is lower, and the ceiling is higher.

    I thought ultimate (or savage, no clue anymore) had the system, that locked your progression?
    Like there was content, that got easier with every expansion as you could use better gear
    but then there was content, who forces you to be on the state when it got released

      Ultimates have a permanent ilvl sync that forces you to stay at a certain lvl but with synced gear u get capped stats that help ease the dps and mitigation check significantly (+many other factors like job changes). Savage fights do not enforce any lvl sync so you can do them later at a high lvl or/and ilvl. For example, in EW we have three savage tiers and if you have current (Anabaseios) gear, you can do the first tier released in EW (Asphodelos) and basically skip the last mechanics just with the power of current ilvl gear. If you want to do DSR, however, your new savage gear will be synced to ilvl 605 :) Hope that helps.
