  • With the terrible news coming out today that budget airline WOW Air has had to cease all operations. We travelled down to Iceland's international airport at Keflavik to talk to the people who have been hit the hardest by this news.

Not exactly! The airline industry is much more complex than what passengers think and yes Airlines could go bankrupt over a night in this extraordinary sophisticated business. I flew with WOWair several time to Toronto, the flight was operated on a stop over using narrow body single fleet which was in my opinion a location advantage, because for such a flight the traditional way would be using a medium to wide body aircraft, other expertise thing using narrow body was a disadvantage. Yet, I would very much blame it on the lack of visibility as a low cost airline, the airline did not exploit and present itself as a leading airline in Europe as other low cost competitors such as Easyjet and Norwegian. Another major issue is the inadequate customer service and this is something that most Scandinavia countries lack due to strong Labour union and unemployment security thus staff are extra arrogant, this has been visible in the way the airline is dealing with its customers.

    Rules for booking flights
    1. Buy travellers insurance
    2. If you dont want to buy travellers insurance, book the flight with a credit card that will automatically give you travelers insurance like an Amex Platinum.
If there are any flight interruptions you an even buy a business class to your destination knowing that your insurance will cover it for you 😂

My family and I are in shock, we were supposed to leave in July for Montreal from Brussels via Reykjavik.
Now the anger passed, I have to make another reservation but obviously I will not find the same rates, thanks so much "Wow" for ruining our trip...
Now I pray to get refund asap, my only hopes is that I paid with my credit card, but nothing is sure yet...
All the best, courage and solidarity to people stranded somewhere in the World, and to those who booked already their tickets with this gang of scammers...

Call the CC company first- or use the chargeback as a nuclear option- its valid in this scenario as you paid for a service that obviously will not be provided. Or use travel insurance with Force Majeure protections in the policy if you purchased.

I am exactly in the same situation, and I paid directly on Wow official website with my Mastercard issued by BNP fortis ( a Belgium bank ). Here are the informations I have collected so far: in the case of payment in credit card, customers from U.S and U.K will probably get paid back by some kind of laws. However, in E.U ( yes, U.K is indeed not in E.U) it depends and my bank told me to claim a dispute first, but they can not guarantee anything. Let's see it and please leave a comment if you have some ideas !

  • @MrSteveCee

A few points (1) No airline is going to notify you when you book your ticket that they are in financial difficulty and may not be able to fly on your date. To think otherwise is delusional. (2) Your credit card company should credit you if the service has not been provided. It will likely take anywhere up to 8 weeks for the credit to appear on your statement.
I am flying to Iceland from Amsterdam in May with Icelandair and was supposed to do the onward leg to Montreal with WOW. I have been forced to use another carrier for that leg at greater cost. My travel insurance does cover the additional costs that I will incur. I always purchase travel cancellation and interruption insurance and check carefully all the terms so that I am fully aware of the protection I am buying, My credit card company has also indicated that they will be crediting me within a couple of months.

She’s right though. You know if you’re having budget issues. They should have told passengers that they were having problems and warn passengers it was possible flights would be canceled.

If you were running a business do you think it's a good business decision to tell potential customers you might sudden go bankrupt? You should always do your research before planning something like this and buy insurance. If she didnt and didn't use a cc with flight insurance then you're pretty SoL as the company is out of business and in liquidation.

Lol "unconstitutional". First of all, Icelandic companies don't follow the U.S. constitution, and there's also nothing illegal about going bankrupt. It's just an unfortunate situation. We got our money back from CC company and rebooked on IcelandAir for twice the price. It sucks but it is the risk you run when you book with a budget carrier and don't do your research. If you don't buy insurance always pay for tickets with a credit card and always book refundable hotels.
