WOW Air shuts down, strands passengers

- Icelandic budget airline WOW Air ceased operations today, stranding passengers across North America and Europe. Alex Spence purchased a round trip ticket with WOW to attend a conference and is now stranded in Berlin.

In 1996, an airline called "MarkAir" based in Denver shut down suddenly and unexpectedly.
When that happened, about a dozen or so Denver Police Officers stationed at Denver Intl. Airport were called to stand around the Mark Air check-in desk in the Terminal.
Yeah, there were a lot of angry passengers. 9 flights cancelled, and nobody to help.
No arrests, but there was a casualty. A computer monitor was yanked off the Mark Air counter, and thrown down an escalator.

Flying on Turkish Airways via Istanbul was definitely the cheapest option we had last time we went to Europe. Plus they give you Turkish Delight!

I'm screwed big time..I'm stuck in Denmark and I heard nothing from wow. I loved the airline. They were the best fair. However, it too sad to hear them going away. I just booked a one way flight to Toronto and it costed me 530$ 😭😭😭

An Airline should not be allowed to just say were not flying anymore and going bankrupt without notice to the passengers ahead of time. It should be responsible for making sure there passengers are safely where they need to be first and not stranding anyone anywhere
That's messed up. Took everyone's money....and then stranded them. SHAME 🤔 😑
We lost $1200 which is not easy especially for a 21 year old college student -.- the whole thing was a scam, I don’t see how they randomly got bankrupt one day like clearly they should of known earlier
@@Lolee56 Airlines are notorious for not being transparent about how their company is doing. That's why investors are so hesitant to invest in them.
I remember the same thing happened with MALÉV Airlines. It was Hungary’s airline and they abruptly closed stranding everyone.

I feel sorry for all passengers left stranded, but by the same token, when travelling you must always be prepared that something can go wrong.
In 2010 an eruption from a volcano on Iceland and volcanic ash in the air closed down air traffic in large parts of Europe and on trans Atlantic routes. That for sure meant more hotel nights for persons travelling.
Anybody remembering Pan Am?
In 1991 that airline filed for Chapter 11 protection.
Later the same year they offered cheap tickets from Europe to USA to persons working for travel agencies. My California born wife worked at that time for American Express travel agency in Stockholm, Sweden. We had our first child, a daughter who was just a bit over 1 year old and who had never met her grand parents. We looked at what would a ticket back cost us on for instance SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) if Pan Am would go belly up while visiting California. We decided we would be able to handle it. We ordered the tickets with Pan Am - the last flights we made with that airline - and we got back to Stockholm with Pan Am. The tickets were ridiculously cheap, as far as I recall it was about 25 % of what the cheapest round-trip tickets on SAS to Los Angeles would have costed us.
What grounds an airline faster than anything? Not being able to pay the fuel company bill.
I'm not sure if it is the case for WOW Air, since their fleet is incredibly efficient. I think their rapid expansion overwhelms their financial portfolio.
Unfortunate.. I flew Wow air several times from Detroit to Stockholm, around 300~ round trip each time. Hopefully a new budget airline pops up that doesn't tank after a few years
Could've given us notice and just end there service once all current flights are done? This has screwed me and many others. I've been waiting months to see my Fiancee and now I probably can't because flights are now double...

Look for "rescue fares" from other airlines including the likes of BA, AA, United, Delta, even Icelandair, some airlines are extending them to people who aren't stranded but still booked flights through WOW, as long as you provide proof of your WOW booking they'll give you a discounted flight.
Just buy a new ticket and put the claims to wow air. Yes it might take months or years from the liquidation process but getting back to where you're from in the intended time means you also worry less and the extra costs that might arise from additional hotel stay can be avoided

A. You assume everyone has the means to do this.
B. There is hardly a guarantee you get back your money back and in most cases the consumer is last in line after other creditors. Even if they get some money back it is most likely a small % of initial amount.
The lesson here is, if you shop a budget airline this can happen. This is hardly the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. These airlines go out of business fairly regularly and in most situations it is not handled well.
Impossible, if wow is a private company, their not gonna any penny back, it’s going back o then.

If you're buying a cheap flight, I doubt you're purchasing insurance.

I’m so mad being stranded here. Everything is super expensive and now I have to book another place to sleep, call my workplace because I can’t go home for 6 days. Iceland air cannot accommodate. So very mad at this company and this country, I will never come to this country ever again. Don’t come bere

As someone mentioned below and my take on this....
Complete the routes without accepting anymore bookings.
Land the planes where ever the last stop is, then sell the aircrafts from there.
I don’t think they even have money to buy fuel...

I guess that they could sell an aircraft, however probably not in time to get everyone back home.
@@Tim-57 they didn't own the aircraft and that was the problem. They were hundreds of million in debt and the owner was hoping to sell off the company to make a quick buck. No one bit. Up to the last day he was trying to sell the company instead of preparing for bankruptcy and his creditors called in the bills.

I only fly 1 budget airline in my life, airasia, and was terrible!, i will never fly budget airline again..never again!!
