I had forgotten how beautiful the Royal Blue finish is on the Python. I sold my 4 inch blue Python about a year ago, but I still have my 4 inch nickel Python. I also have a 4 inch 586 no dash. That was an interesting video comparing the two revolvers. I never get tired of it.
I had a good friend that wanted to buy one of my Pythons. I priced it and he bought it without any haggle. I never shot it, nor my nickel one the whole time I've had them. They are that perfect in their finish. Not even a turn ring on the cylinder. I guess too much money in Safe Queens I'll never shoot. I did use that money to add three more Smith's to my collection that I will shoot. And I now get to shoot my former Python when he brings it to the range!
Great video, it's a little messy but you would do yourself a favor by keeping a flim of oil on the finish, your Colt is getting some pitting on the hammer from salt water in the air , i saw some on your S&W cylinder flute also , you need some film of oil to protect the stunning beautiful Blueing. Keep some silicone dry moisture packs in your safe , they come in everything nowadays, because everything that's shipped over sea in container ship's is surrounded by sea water, which is very corrosive to steel. ❤
The Model 60 is a J frame, not a K. You are thinking of the Model 66, which is the stainless steel sister to the Model 19 you mentioned. The L-frame, as I understand it, wasn’t intended to replace the K-frame per se. It was more a matter of replacing/supplementing the .357 Magnum versions of the K-frame. It didn’t really work out that way, since the 581 and 681 were discontinued long before the equivalent Model 13 and 65 were discontinued. The Model 19 and 586 were both dropped at the same time, and the 19 and 586 were both brought back in the Classic series. As you stated, the 686 sold well and never went out of production. The 66 finally went away in 2005, but was also brought back.
Found a link someone posted from the NRA website. Colt is introducing a blued Python for 2024 at Shot Show. From the still photos and the video of the reviewer handling it, it looks just as good as the original. Wonder what the cost difference will be compared to the stainless.
I own several pythons and just purchased my first smith. It’s a 586 6”. And I can say the pythons are way higher quality fit , finish and action. If I could only have one , it would be no doubt a python.
The Smith vs Colt is a debate as old as the companies themselves. I own quite a few of both, and love em all! I'll give Colt the edge in finish and action ( got a couple of really smoooth Smiths too) Never could make up my mind which I liked better,so I guess I have to try them all out! / Agree with doing a Smython, that'd be cool!
@@TerryBentonto be Clear is that the same one you refurbished that's a good statement they do look polished like they are wet but berfectly uniform with no water runs I'm always wiping mine down looking like a criminal trying to get rid of fingerprints lol
I'd like to have a 4 inch though I got the big one that only pulls quick for a thigh rig or chest rig but just a great home defense handgun zero recoil as far as 357 goes
I have a 1969 Python 6" and yes... you have to see the blue on it to believe it... you will throw rocks at modern finishes including 'polished' stainless. Colt had a wall of wooden polishing wheels and they used em all LOL gorgeous is hardly good enough to describe em. I believe that the L frame and the Dan wesson guns are direct copies (externally) of the Python. I also have a Colt Trooper mk3 which more resembles the 586/686 cyl rotation cyl latch these are non issues and anyone can adapt and neither is superior... they are just different. some will say the Colt rotation is superior and .... well.. 'maybe'. to be fair... I have old SW guns that have a LOT of use. the actions have worn in to be almost Python good. My target SW model 19 has a fantastic single and dougle action.. my PPC SW custom has at least as good but some gunsmith in the past spent many hours doing that.
I like to be shocked... keeps me young.. and seriously? it is rare something can shock me.. especially in a good way. at 70 years old LOL... and having guns and hot rods and a few Harleys around (old ones) and a girlfriend who is 16 years younger and an absolute dream.. well... all this stuff keeps me young LOL latest is nickel plate and making gun and knife grips and kits I make to make paper cartridges for my black powder revolvers.. always something to do . When someone tells me that they are bored? well... I absolutely do not have a clues as to what they mean. being retired means you wake up every day with a smile and a list of things to do. My advise to anyone is to retire the minute you can... in fact several minutes before you can works too. I retired at 58 at a loss. have not regretted it for a minute,@@TerryBenton
Terry I want to help you spend your money. Heres a project idea i think you would like if you think monetarily its worth it. Buy an older 586 in rough condition and give it the restored python treatment. Send it to the same gunsmith who refinished the python and see if you can make a 586 have the same quality of finish as the pythons
I would do that in a heart beat. This python in this video is not the one I restored. 586 are hard enough to find but I will look. If you happen to know of one for sale let me know. I would like a 4 inch
@@TerryBenton here's another maybe more complicated idea for you, use that 4" barrel with weak roll marks and make a 586 4" smython and royal blue finish it. I have no idea what it takes to create a smython but it would be cool.
@dirtbikefreak125 lol. The gunsmith wants to do that. I actually almost bought a POS nickel trooper but it was a 38 special. I am looking for an older trooper in rough shape that someone does not want an arm and leg for
I love the competition between these two because it pushes innovation forward. Great video.
Thank you for watching. Smith and Colt is one of those rivalries that will never die!
