    Not sure why no one seems to get the point. Of course if its a machine rest, with a scope or red dot they would be nearly the same, he‘s testing the hypothesis that a longer sight radius on a handgun will make the GUNNER more accurate.

    I've enjoyed several of your videos, but have not taken the time to thank you for how helpful, and thoughtful, they are. Your explanations are thorough, but not unnecessarily so (you even speeded some sections up--thank you!). I benefit each time I watch your videos. My first firearm was (and still is here) a Ruger Security Six with four-inch barrel, the next was a Blackhawk with the 6.5-inch barrel, and my results have always been similar, especially now 35 years or so later. The longer sight radius really helps. Thank you for your helpful videos.

    if you want to grade the accuracy from both guns then a rest would be in order all this off hand shooting is just your skill level with both guns so removing the human element would give you a truer results.

      Yea, that's not accuracy bud thats called not pulling the trigger if your away from the Bench rest so shooting it from the hand is more accurate.

    Some good looking Altamont grips on those. So much more goes into accuracy than just barrel lengths. I'm not much on snubbies, though I do have some. I prefer 4" to 6", if for no other reason than cosmetics. I have some black powder revolvers up to 8". Some firearms tend to like one ammo brand or weight over another. I have some .357s that are more accurate with .38 SPL and some that are more accurate with .357. None of my .44 Magnums are less than 6".

    It will be interesting to perform the same tests with redo dot sight. I think if you eliminate the variable of sight radius, the difference in accuracy of 4 inch and 6 inch barrels will be negligible.

    Other than sight radius, I don't have a real personal preference between 4" or 6" barrels & only see a slightly improved group with the longer of the two choices. Individual shooters may have differing results.

    I have a lot of revolvers and have been shooting them more than 50 years. As it happens, the most accurate handgun I have ever shot is my Colt Officer's Model Match .38 with 6" barrel. Therefore...6" barrels are more accurate, right?
    I don't think so. At least I do not think the barrel length deserves the credit. The OMM has an excellent trigger and action (the same as a Python) and excellent and very clear sights (same as a Python) and I think those features are what makes the gun easier to shoot accurately in a person's hands.
    I would bet if you clamped any of my good quality revolvers with 4", 5" or 6" barrels in a machine rest and fired them, there would be little, if any difference in accuracy.
    I do not own a Python, but have fired them. I would wager that a Python with a 4" barrel would be as easy to shoot accurately as a Python with a 6" barrel. We could get into the physics of sight radius and how that affects precision, but it is a pretty moot point when you put the gun into the average shooter's hands.
    I give the credit for really fine accuracy to trigger, action and sights.

    Actual for me video, thank you. I am now choosing the barrel length for the Taurus Hunter. I think that an even longer barrel makes for a better balance of the weapon, compensating for the significant weight of the drum with cartridges. Yes, and the total weight will be heavier, respectively, it will be easier to bear the recoil, which will give better accuracy. Thanks, subscribed :)

    Hi, Had to subscribe n Like based on the video. Really cool video, Informative, down to earth, 100% real and informative/helpful. I wasn't interested in where you hit the target but what your groups were like. I'm sure "results will vary" between shooters but your results have to be an extremely good indicator of barrel length differences. Slow-Motion was a great addition. Shows brilliantly the flip and the forcing cone flash. I can see a great video like this in the future might use that Mantis device to show more finer differences.
    Take home message for me...if you can afford it, get a 6" & 4" and enjoy them both at the range hahaa
    Yeah I'm ageing and eye ageing means iron sights are on the way out for me & red dot is the thing going forward & barrel length is going to always be a thing. I like that the video kinda takes all the variables to accuracy out except the barrel length.
    Dilemma, I like the look of the 4" but would be thinking me personally, I'd be better off with the 6" barrel.
    Keep up the good work. Pity it took me years to find your channel though haha
    Have a great day!!

    I shoot 38 special through 5-inch and 6-inch barrel revolvers.
    The 5-inch is a S&W 38 special.
    The 6-inch is a S&W 357 magnum.
    Up to 15 yards, I notice very little difference in accuracy.
    At 25 yards, my accuracy is better with the 357 magnum.
    However, I am not sure if the difference in accuracy is due to difference in barrel length, difference is revolver weight, difference in sight radius, or difference in optical sights.

    I suppose it all comes down to your intended purpose for the revolver. The 629-6 that has the clocked barrel, that I mentioned before, is a 4”. I opted for the 4”, because, outside of recreational shooting, it’s primary purpose is for a hunting sidearm for emergency aggressive moose or cinnamon bear repellent. It is a bit handier than a 6”, and is even lighter than my 6” GP100 in .357.
    Once it returns from Smith, it will be riding in a chest rig.

    I have a 686 Classic Hunter, 6 inch, and to this day I have never shot any gun easier or more accurate. For me anyway. I regularly hit clay targets set up on a 105 yard sand bank. I do not carry it for defense obviously. Short, light, easy to carry only. But that is only common sense, for close range only. If you want to actually hit something, consistently, go for length.

    We know longer is better but you are already shooting so well it hardly matters. Either one would easily do the job in the hands of the practiced shooter. My own preference is 4 inch, 6 inch is just too much gun for me. My prior Ruger Security-Six 4in was just right and I got good enough results to not have to worry about it. And its true, 38s in a 357 is hardly felt at all. I wont say its nothing but almost nothing and you can just enjoy the time and work on skill. When a person is really good in this combo, then move up to 357 ammo and work on not blinking and flinching and the rest of it.

  • @Hutzjohn

    I believe both of the revolvers are capable of more accuracy than you're capable of "holding". Watch video a few times and watch your muzzle closely it moves quit a bit --- we ALL have this problem! I'm thinking a shooting stick with a "V" notch would vastly improve accuracy. Both are beautiful revolvers👍 and probably capable of the same accuracy. The S.S. is a perfect survival "gun" 125 grain 38 specials with FMJ's will take small game without a lot of meat damage and full power 180 grain 357 mags for deer size game will easily take with good shot placement. You only need to shoot both calibers enough to figure out sight adjustment needed between the different rounds.

    Now I understand why barrel length plays a significant role in handgun accuracy. I have shot a smith and wesson governor 3" at 7 yards and did terrible all the shots were high. Missed the silhouette like 12 times. Therefore; I will never own a snubby. Thanks for the input on barrel length.

    that was stolen from my garage 2 years ago. I am seriously trying to
    decide between the 568 4 in. and 586 6 inch. I'm thinking of the extra
    weight of the longer barrel when shooting for a couple hours at the
    range. I have smaller (and thus a bit weaker) wrists. Is that something
    you have thought about or is it a non issue for you or men with smaller
    wrists. Thanks.

    • @jimmcdade7689
      @jimmcdade7689 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sir,
      I don’t believe the level of inaccuracy you experienced with your 4” 586 are secondary to barrel length. A longer sight radius makes shooting accurately somewhat easier, but does not make a revolver (or any firearm) inherently more accurate. Try your test off a rest, if the results are similar, it’s not your shooting, it’s the gun.

    somebody tell why the the internal lock is so bad on these guns

    • @jackgreenstalk777
      @jackgreenstalk777 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the 357 or larger, there has been a few people who had them lock up on their own from recoil vibrating them locked. From an engineering perspective, more parts= more chances to fail, and its another entry point for dirt, derbris etc to get inside the frame, makes it harder to clean, need to clean more often. And if you've ever taken off a side plate or seen a video of a smith & wesson disassembly you'll see its already complex inside, no need to make more small parts crammed into what is like a swiss watch of small parts and springs packed into a small place.

    • @jackgreenstalk777
      @jackgreenstalk777 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, its political, often deemed a hilary hole, since it was a concession to hilary and the democrat protectionist who think a safety on the gun is what makes it safe. Not acknowledging that people often have injuries and death because misuse or misunderstanding of safetys and locks.. ie "thought it was locked or on safe" instead of following safe gun handling rules.. the person is / should he "the safety".. not pointing it at anything they dont wish to shoot, finger off trigger til ready to fire, treat all guns as if they are loaded, and know your target and what is around/beyond it.

    I shoot smaller groups than you at 25 yards with my glock 19. If you put those revolvers in a bench rest, they would put all the rounds in the same hole regardless of the barrel length. Same goes for a glock 19 or 17. The mechanical accuracy of modern firearms WAY exceeds what we can do with then standing. The extra barrel length provides a longer sight radius making it easier for YOU to shoot tighter groups but it is not any more mechanically accurate than the 4 inch. You are confusing your shooting skill with the accuracy of the gun.
    Oh, another common myth is that snub nose revolvers aren't accurate. They are in fact very mechanically accurate, they are just hard to shoot well so people mistakenly call them inaccurate.

    This video is a waste of time. First of all, you're just shooting off hand. The gun's performance could be 100% because of you and not the barrel length. Seeing as you can't hit a huge piece of paper from 25 yards with a 6" revolver, you definitely need a rest to get any kind of results worth studying. Shame to see so much money spent on some nice firearms and can't even hit the target.
