I'm so sick of horror movies being snubbed by the Academy. Not only did Dafoe and Pattinson deserve nominations, but I'd say the costume designer deserved wins for this film and The Witch. Midsommar is another one that should've won that category, and also given Florence Pugh a nom.
In my opinion there should be more award shows and categories especially in the animation realm
I think both of them should've been nomiated 100%, but in my Opinion Joaquin Phoenix deserved winning the 2019 Oscar...But I absolutely agree with you

I mean so many good horror films come out and yet the academy always ignores them mostly for dramas, the Academy Awards are always a joke, and will forever be biased.

Personally, what I think is that the reason he started screaming when he saw what was in the lens is that it was just an ordinary lamp. Its then that he realized that for most of what happened, there was a more logical explanation. And the reason why he was screaming is because he realized he just killed a man in cold blood for what he thought was for an unbelievable treasure/beauty, but it was for nothing, and the reason wake always tended the light house is because it was the closest he could get to privacy in the cramped space they were given as their living quarters.
This is such a grounded take
It makes a lot of sense with the analogy of Prometheus. The lighthouse is just fire, but to humanity and the gods it was something so much greater.

This is how I interpreted this movie. The whole thing was a spiritual allegory. Thomas Howard was his real name, and him being on the island was him being stuck in Purgatory with a chance for salvation after he chose not to save the real Winslow. The light of the lighthouse was the entrance to Heaven that Thomas was trying to get to, and Thomas Wake was the gate keeper/guardian angel trying to help him obtain salvation, and the logbook was a record of Howard's sins (even Wake's name can be seen as a spiritual connection to Howard, "Thomas" "Wake"). He was testing Howard and during his time in Purgatory, and didn't want him to see himself as an evil person, which is why he didn't want him to "spill the beans". Howard lost his chance at salvation by killing Wake, which is why when he tried to go to the light (Heaven), he was cast out and fell into the darkness below (Hell). Seeing him being disemboweled by the seagulls at the end was his eternal punishment (the seagulls throughout the movie either representing angels, demons, or the souls of other sailors who either achieved salvation, damnation, or were stuck in Purgatory, like the one eyed man/seagull).
Hey, I have the similar theory! The purgatory/judgement thing in general just kind of... makes the most sense to me personally lol.
Specifically however, in a second half of the theory, I've got a suspicion that Thomas is some kind of a sea god, maybe a son of Poseidon, tasked with the judgment and testing of the young man.
That would explain the tentacles, the mermaid (greek gods, even gods in general in mythology, tended to shapeshift a ton), and the Promethean reference at the end.
@@fockingreat1125 Wake is Proteus, son of Poseidon. He calls himself the brother of Triton and refers to the god of the sea as his father during the lobster scene. And yeah Howard is Prometheus / humanity.
I agree except I think he murdered the dude on purpose and lies about it, like he lies about killing the gull. I think how brutal he kills the gull is also meant to show us he is always murderously unhinged from the start and was capable of killing Winslow outright. He's up close to the back of the guy's head in the brief flashbacks, not standing a distance away watching an accident.

Why is nobody talking about James’ reinterpretation of Willem Dafoe’s monologue before he gets to the numbers? I mean that was truly one of the best “Get to the numbers” gags I’ve ever seen on this channel, and he’s had a lot of good ones but this one in particular I rewatched just to hear how well he was reciting and creating his own bit of dialogue in there. Truly impressive, and one of the many things I truly like about James and this channel!

Fun fact: what's in the background at the end of that last shot are actually rocks! I'm from Nova Scotia myself, and we've got some interesting rock formations that can take on tons of different forms, sometimes looking like wood!

Kristen Stewart on the other hand was a bad actress before Twilight, was a bad actress in it and has continued to be a bad actress after it despite Twilight fans attempts to use the Bella character to defend her with "That's how Bella acts in the book" even though Stewart gives the same emotionless "I'm slowly reciting the script word for word like a robot" performance in every film she's been in.

Winslow’s distorted scream when staring into the light was one of the most upsetting and uncomfortable things I’d ever seen in a movie theater. It just really bothered me, deep in my core. Which proves it did exactly what it wanted to. I was thinking about that moment for months.
Wasn't this slightly based on a true story? About the 3 men who went missing while tending a light house after 5 weeks and they found journals about weather that didn't match what the actual weather was on those days and just odd things? The name is escaping me but that was a true story.
It was slightly based on a true story, though not that one. To my recollection, it's based on the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy, in which two wickies were known to quarrel frequently. One of them, Thomas Griffith, died in a freak accident and the other, Thomas Howell, was afraid that he would be accused of murder should he try to dispose of the body. As such, he kept the body around until it started to decompose. He tried to make a makeshift coffin for him and hanging it upon an outside shelf. However, stiff winds eventually destroyed the coffin and caused Griffith's body to repeatedly bang against the window, emotionally traumatizing Howell to the point where he was unrecognizable to his friends after he came back.

And he loses his right eye to the seagulls, just as the previous lighthouse keeper and the seagull were missing theirs. This movie is insanely dense.
2019's best film. Couldn't believe how many theaters dropped this movie. As well as not seeing it promoted. The Academy should been ashamed for ignoring this masterpiece. This film made me a believer out of Robert Pattinson, and convinced me that he's going to be a great Batman.

I loved so many things about this Kill Count, but the Pete's Dragon reference and the ending monologue had to be the best parts. It's easy to see just how much you loved this movie (and Eggers as a director). And with good reason.
I saw this movie in theaters and LOVED how the aspect ratio really cemented the feeling of absolute isolation that the characters and we the audience were meant to experience. It was definitely one of my favorite movies of 2019. Keep up the amazing work!

I’ve seen a lot of theories for this movie and they are all very well-thought out and plausible. I’m not sure what it is, but I will say that when I first saw trailers for this movie, I thought it would be something of a re-telling of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” A man kills a sea bird, and he and his crew are stuck at sea until the man stones. I don’t know if it holds up now, but I thought it was an interesting idea.

I love the little additions pushed into the breakdowns on this channel. It's cool to see that he is a fan of They Might Be Giants; "stood on rocket shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free." I also caught the one in Midsommar: "when the dinner bell does the dinner bell thing, dinner bell, dinner bell, ding"
As you said, that's a shame both Pattinson and Dafoe didn't get even an Academy Award nomination for this performance, I had a chance to see the movie on Amazone Prime Video and it was such an unsettling experience for me that I even almost lost my will to pursue a dop career after watching how well it was shot.

About three lighthouse keepers disappearing without any evidence that they died there or left, just a notebook detailing what they went through, talking about a storm and a thing in the lighthouse chasing them

I HAVE NEVER CLICKED ON A VIDEO SO FAST IN MY LIFE. The lighthouse is truly one of my favorite movies--it's so well crafted, everything about it is just amazing! The aspect ratio makes everything feel closed in and isolated, the black and white shows just how stark and well...dark the movie is, the performances in this movie are off the charts, and it's one of those horror movies that gives you no answers, and actually makes you have to think. Truly one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, thanks for doing a count on it!
@lauren masters That's one of the points of the movie--not to have any cement answers. It actually makes people think, which is a lot more fun than being handed the answers. There's a lot of different things that could be happening--a god and a mortal, a man dying alone in the woods, even just two men going crazy on a rock. There is no cement answer, and that's the fun of it.
Defoe's HARK speech is one of my favourite moments in any film.

That smash cut from them beating the shit out of each other to them cuddling on the floor got the biggest laugh in the theater.
I watched this movie a week ago and when Winslow got into the light, a few cars passed my open second story window and their headlights matched with the lantern turning, so it was a super cool immersive moment that made me feel like I was there. But yeah this movie is in my top five now. As an aspiring sound designer this movie is an inspiration to me.

I though the VVitch was a good movie, but the Lighthouse, this, is a great one. The atmosphere, the mythos, the dialect, the genuine slow descent into madness. And my god, this is S+ tier Willem Dafoe. This film also made me realize the Robert Pattinson got a bad rep as a certain emo vampire, and actually deserves another chance to be recognized, and he took it. I don't even really have a real complaint with this film personally, it always made me wonder what was going to happen next. And I can always appreciate a movie with a not-so-happy and downright weird ending.
Lastly, holy fvck, James' curse at the end! Brillaint!!

The interpretation I like the most is that Howard is in hell or purgatory, Wake is proteus, an ancient sea god, and Howard can only escape purgatory by accepting his sins and repenting with humility. Proteus acts as a reflection of Howard’s darkest self trying to force his way through to the foreground of his consciousness. Forcing him to acknowledge and understand his own evil nature.
William Dafoe is hands down one of my favorite actors because he has a really unique scratchy yet high pitched voice and most of his roles make him sound like a villain even when he isn't one
The only reason why he didn’t get nominated, is because he got nominated the 2 years prior, because he is that good. My all time favorite actors

Am i the only one that doesnt watch James A Janisse for the kill counts but for its interesting commentary on the movie and the behind the scenes stuff?

Probably my favourite Kill Count to date and definitely my very favourite "let's get to the numbers" gag
"The Lighthouse"(2019) is an excellent atmospheric psychological horror movie! The isolation, the loneliness, and finally the paranoia all over the greatness!
At first I liked Dead Meat because I never liked horror movies but now I love the fact that James always goes out of his way to mention the people behind the camera who make all this amazing work happen. It brings a whole new depth when you see similar names in other films and it just makes me love Dead Meat so much more
That “to the numbers” bit had me clapping at my computer. Frickin’ brilliant, James!
I feel like James is trying to get his fans to go insane by how many times he keeps saying “The Witch”

Willem Dafoe reminds me of British actors who spend years studying and perfecting their craft. That monologue was incredible.
When I saw it in Theaters, my reaction when I stepped out of the theater was pure shock because I felt like I didn't know what color was
I love how she tailored the clothing to be accurate of the time period the movie was supposed to be set in. That's definitely something *TONS OF* films miss. 🌜🌛

The fact that they went the extra mile to make this movie happen, makes me appreciate these sorts of movies more.

Winslow screaming when he looks into the light is one of the scariest scenes in all the horror movies I’ve ever scene.
I like how this was produced as B&W. It really changes how I viewed it with the setting of the movie.
The sequences to get to the numbers have really become even more entertaining, creative, and unique across the more recent videos. I thoroughly enjoy the content and presentation!
