    Well now...this was interesting. I knew I was going to say nice looking grain. But when you showed it at the end I was blown away.
    It's not a bowl or a platter or any conventional turning with some sort of a utilitarian use.
    What it is is ART pure art at its finest. I know people that would absolutely love to have it.
    The grain is very nice but that bark sets it off and the areas with the groves look like you designed it that way. Wait you did!
    I especially like the one that just ends. Oh and the end that looks like 2 logs is another great feature.
    Seriously Phil I love it.

      Wow! Thank you Gary, for the best comment I've received on ANY of my videos! I feel like you truly understand what I was trying to do, here. It was kind of a gamble on this plum wood because I like it so much and didn't want to screw it up, but some how, it worked out in the end.
      Thank you again, Gary! You've made my day!

    Plum Crazy is an appropriate name for that creation. It sort of reminds me of the live edge bowl my grandparents would put out at the holidays to hold all the different nuts that were still in their shells. Fill that center with a variety of nuts and use the outer rings to keep the nutcrackers and pics to get into the shells. Regardless, there are no mistakes only experiments and learning. Thanks for not giving up on it and sticking with it. It looks great.

    Phil, I am a novice turner with loads of sanding under my belt and I've turned several pieces like your "bad dream" and I use the pads wrapped around a 2 inch paint brush with great results and intact fingertips. I'm a big fan and have learned so much watching your videos. I also try to leave it as natural as possible. It took retirement to return to a passion I learned in high school and started my own little venture called nakid grandpa woodworks here in Virginia Beach.......turning and learning.....bill

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bill! I turned a similar bowl to this one and tried the sandpaper wrapped around the paint brush trick. I don't know what kind of pieces "like" this one you have turned but these live edge and natural edge pieces do not do well with that trick. If you have a nice even round bowl in the middle, it probably works great but on natural edge, not so much.

      Ya, I suppose that rescue shelters would be pretty picky. Maybe they could be composted. Here in Calgary the city picks up garden waste, tree trimmings, Christmas trees etc and I think all that goes through a chipper and gets composted. I'll have to check to see I suppose, but here in the City I dont have many options for disposing of large quantities of wood chips, we only get 1 recycle bin of stuff per week, and wood turning will certainly clog that up....

    Hi Phil! This old video just popped up for me. I love it very much. One of the first large bowls I made was more or less like what you did but it was a combination chip and dip bowl. With the smaller bowl for dip emerging out of the chip bowl. The outer bowl was about 13 or 14 inches across and around 5 inches deep. The smaller bowl was around 4 inches across and deep enough that a little glass bowl could sit inside to hold dip. Wish I had remembered to take a picture before I gave it away. I think it was made from walnut. Anyway thanks for the video, I really do love the “bad dream” bowl! Cheers, Rick

    Hi Phil. I meant to mention in my last comment. In the past when I faced the dilemma of sanding in tight places that do not allow fingers, I have used rubber hose (1/4, 3/8 and 1/2) diameter with sand paper wrapped over one end and taped on the other. This rubber hose allows the sandpaper to move with the contour of the area to be sanded without damaging fingers. Mostly I use the clear hose that is a little firmer, but I also have use the more soft black rubber hose as well. Hope this helps, Jerry

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the help, Jerry. The problem is, I'm guessing you are talking about nice round bowls and your suggestions would be very helpful with those. I turned another somewhat similar bowl after this one. Lots of people had lots of suggestions on how to get in there and I tried some of them. None of them work on a bowl with natural edges. The irregular edges come around and just tear up whatever you are using. It just takes lots of hand sanding with the piece not spinning to solve the issue. 😊

    Well Phil, you can't be the only odd one. Would you believe that when I look at it from the end of the 2 branches, I see a torso with the belly hollowed out for some type of snack food. Beautiful as always and plum is an amazingly beautiful wood.

      You are not wrong, Paula! From that angle it does indeed look very much like you describe. I'm so glad you like it, it's my personal favorite. Thank you! 😊

    Great piece! Outside ring could gave dried flowers, the inside ring bite veggies to dip into a delicious sauce contained in a separate glass bowl so there is no interaction with the wood finish. 👍👍👍👍👍

    Phil, you really did a great job on this creation. I love how you think out loud and work through your thought process. That is some really beautiful wood too. The way the dark and light grain just snapped when you put the sealer on. Really fine job sir! Nicely done, didn't look to easy either.

    Thanks for the shout out, Phil! Much appreciated, my friend! I love the grain in this piece. But then I love pretty much any wood that has grain definition. I've been known to study the grain wood floors, etc. for... well, for longer than normal folks.
    Once you turned it around and got into it a bit, I kept thinking, "Go with the emerging bowl idea, Phil!" And then you kinda did, so I guess you heard me. I wouldn't want to sand that beast though. Sheesh! I LOVE it!

      You are welcome, Billy. Talent and entertainment deserve to be recognized.
      Sanding this piece was darn near impossible. I got it done but I don't ever want to do it again. What a pain!
      Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Billy, much appreciated!

    While it was still on the lathe at the end it reminded me of a totem pole part, like an eye. Don't too much care about its usefulness, love its beauty! Such pretty wood.
