You wanna know the worst part? He actually DID hold back. See, our homeboy can bench press entire tanks, and tons of fun is (besides being about 400, 500 pounds of muscle) completely standard human. If Peter smacked Fisk full tilt, Fisk would be wall paint. To be fair, if Peter wasn't still holding back, Fisk would've had his head pulped on the first strike. That's what people forget about Spider-Man: When you have the strength to lift ten tons, you have the strength to shatter bone. It takes 4,000 newtons of force to break a femur. It takes 10,000,000 to lift ten tons. Sure, his bones may also bre-...oh yeah, they won't because he has super durability at the level that hitting him is like hitting solid concrete.

This always reminds me of that one time some rogues got scared at a silent Spider-Man (he actually had laryngitis); they were so scared they turned themselves, which is understandable. Without his quips and one-liners, he is actually very scary: a red figure with huge open white eyes that skitters around the walls and ceiling with uncanny speed and strength like a demon-possessed creature, but hey, better than crossing the alley and meeting Daredevil and the Punisher since they operate very close.

This comic definitely showed something that Peter almost never shows: How hopelessly outmatched regular, non-powered criminals are against him. It isn't even a challenge to him. His strength has been measured between 20 tons to 100 tons. His reflexes, speed, senses, weapons, intelligence, all combined make him almost God level in combat. The only thing Criminals had going for them was Peter's sense of mercy. His humanity. He was just a good person in general who tried to hurt people as little as possible. Kingpin brought this on himself. He hurt one of two people that could make Peter completely let go of his good side.

Something someone pointed out to me in Superhero stories that I found interesting is, on average, the heroes are always stronger. I’m not referring to being morally stronger, even thought that is the case usually, especially in more traditional stories. I speak in terms of pure capabilities. They are always stronger, always faster, always smarter, always more skilled, always the superior force in the conflict on some level, the thing that holds them back, the thing that stops every fight from being a curb stop, or at the very least ending in them maiming someone, is that they are holding back because of their moral codes. They aren’t going for the throat, they aren’t trying to kill or maim, they are trying to end the conflict with the minimal level of violence necessary. On a certain level this is simply the escalation ladder at play, you don’t open with all guns blazing because that encourages people to respond in kind. Even if you don’t care about the people you’re fighting, if you care about everything and everyone around the fight, you shouldn’t encourage that type of response. Which is why I find it really dumb you have villains who try to goad them into going further up the ladder, to be more aggressive, to kill their opponents, either because they think they somehow win by getting heroes to throw away the rule book, or because they someone never realize “this person has kicked my ass a hundred times already even though I’ve been trying to kill them and I am only still alive because they haven’t”. And it always immensely satisfying to see villains like that realize they’ve been poking a bear.

Cuz that's aimed at the reader and some legacy culture of wildly different decades with different "moral priorities". For wolrd building sure, it makes very weird that's why we have to suspend our disbelief. My favourite example of something that must not be question ever in comics is "Why is Earth the center of the Universe". The MCU for example. How many time was the universe or multiverse saved on Earth. Somehow every single villain comes to Earth to conquer the universe. We fucking know it's bullshit, the writers know, but we just don't question it. This can be said of most things in comics which makes it a finnicky argument to make cuz it's easy to use to excuse poor writing or inconsistencies.

I love the last scene because it highlights the flaw in the sort of "Kingpin" or "Littlefinger" type of scheming characters who are indeed powerful because of their network and because of the influence they have other people.
Without their cohort it is only their word and promise of violence that keeps them at the top. And in this instance he made the fatal error of relying on his opponents "strong moral character" to give him the upper hand. Because Kingpin has been through this dance before. He believes he can fight Spider-Man. And he believes that there will come a point in the fight where he can either extort him by maybe threatening to expose his secret identity, or threaten Mary-Jane, or Aunt May. Kingpin believes he is five steps ahead of his enemy as usual. But he didn't account for one thing:
At this point: Peter doesn't care. Peter is out for blood. No quips, no demeaning, no battle of wits, Peter is there to kill him. And Fisk doesn't even realize that against him he doesn't stand a chance. He doesn't realize that there is literally nothing he can do to stop Peter from killing him. He can threaten him. He can't extort him. He can't distract or persuade him.
Suppose that's why they say one of the scariest things in Marvel is when Spidey goes quiet.

4:40 It's really inspiring honestly, as dark as the story is, I like that. Peter explains to him that all of his wealth and possessions don't really matter, compared to what Peter himself is on his own. Just kind of a powerful sentiment for anyone who really doesn't have much but themselves at any given moment in life... What you have might be more than enough.
To me, the dual character of Spider-Man/ Peter Parker has always been about innocence inevitably lost, and the application of trauma, responsibility, and in many ways just tragedy towards an originally soft-hearted and kind person. There is a kind of slow revelation that, in spite of all of his partners, friends, family, and even rogue's gallery, He's really a lone wolf...
The most interesting and powerful element of this is how Spider-Man responds to these difficult losses and challenges in his life... I don't know the context of this issue or storyline, But I really hope this isn't the route he goes down in the end. It's interesting to see him lose control in such a way, but just doesn't ring true to the the fundamental character as a permanent attitude switch Imo.
His good heart kind of has to win, or else he's like some mutated Batman/ Deadpool/ punisher/ etc Chimera. Always after being tested, Always after showing his humanity and hubris... But I don't know, aside from middle-aged dark comic relief overweight future Parker, I would like to know where the story goes, And if you find some more meaningful place for his pain and aggression.

This is a really good story. We always wondered what would happen when our favorite wall crawler finally snapped, and I don't mean him spine. I couldn't pick one panel, but I agree that Peter revealing his face saying "I am" was chilling. And the entirety of the prison scene was very well done. He still held back because he wanted to break Fisk, not kill him at that moment. He made a statement proving he could take down one of the most powerful humans without powers, only his speed and strength. He future-proofed any thugs coming after him, and he'd still kill if his demands weren't met. Scenes like this are my favorite. I am curious how it'd play out if Fisk ordered the whole prison on him, and Peter had to fight a hundred or so goons at once.

If 100 inmates attack Spidey, he kills (or incapacitates) all 100, easily. Even all at once. Practically speaking no more than 6-8 could hope to reach/hit him at once. That in mind: I don't expect any of them would be fast enough to land (or avoid) a blow, let alone strong enough to hurt him if they did...and they certainly can't withstand his might. He could literally "Saitama" them and kill each with one (head exploding or chest collapsing) punch if he was of the mind to. If he truly and completely gave in to murderous vengeance and fought normal men in that state he would likely be decapitating people, ripping off limbs, beating people with limbs and torsos, etc...not even because he meant to, just because he's that strong and he'd have zero regard for the well being (or life) of the person he's fighting. With no reason to care and nothing holding him back the violence would be brutal.

I think Peter drawing a line between the Spiderman persona and himself is a really important idea that needs more exploration.
Spiderman is Peter's idealized self: funny, confident, witty, and a complete moral paragon.
But Peter is still a person, and is more than entitled to lash out when something genuinely bad happens.
Drawing this line between Spiderman and Peter Parker also helps establish a status quo for the criminal world; when Spiderman is on the streets, everyone is aware he's just looking to stop crime. When Peter is on the streets asking questions, then everyone is aware that something happened and Peter has a specific target he's planning on dealing with.

    • @danielwood6833
      @danielwood6833 ปีที่แล้ว +73

I’d have to slightly disagree but only to a certain extent. The angle the comics went with for decades was that Peter isn’t like a traditional hero in personality or approach. Spider-Man isn’t really a paragon of morality as something that has been shown time and again is that the mask doesn’t change him but it emphasises what’s already there, flaws included. But it’s something he recognises and tries to improve on, as he has sought to kill in anger and hate multiple times but he usually pulls himself back, though this story is one of the few were he doesn’t because he has been pushed too far.
Spider-Man isn’t a Superman in terms of moral righteousness, but he is trying his best to reach that.

Nice vid! One nitpick: "southpaw" does not mean a punch thrown with the left hand. "Southpaw" is a term from boxing - it refers to a fighter who fights in the left-handed stance: right foot and right hand forward. In the southpaw stance, the left hand is the one that delivers power shots and the right hand is used for jabbing and hooks. Sometimes right-handed fighters will fight southpaw, usually for the benefit of being able to throw short right hooks (in the right-handed stance, the right foot and right hand are further back, which means the right hook has to travel further and thus leaves the boxer more exposed).

I remember reading this back when it came out and just being so taken aback. It was so completely out of character, but also showed that Peter understood the criminals better than he lets on. It was invigorating to see the hero that cracks jokes and perseveres had that side to him. That capability was always in him, he just never uses it. I’ve always seen Spider-man as what happens when Batman isn’t broken in youth but rather healed after the trauma (and then of course there’s the powers vs. Money). That said, this four issue stint was more like Batman than Spider-Man. It confirmed for me that Peter wasn’t just insanely capable, he is also extremely responsible. That solution is always kill them, but they never do the crime again... unless some magic extra life thing is involved. Punisher villians generally get one shot and don't come back or have some lucky thing happen that lets them get away. Batman paralizing or lobotomizing the Joker? You have to make your villains capable of harming either directly or indirectly the hero elsewise the hero has no element of danger or adversity to overcome. Spiderman is the guy that swings in with humor and fun and beats criminals because that's his persona inside the job. outside of the job is just one guy who's trying to take on a entire city full of crimes. Honestly, this is probably some of the most realistic spiderman stories out there, where peter didn't break his moral code, but still beats the shit out of kingpin and if he has to, can definitely kill him if aunt may actually dies. That's the thing a lot of people forget: in majority of his stories Peter has to constantly hold back bc he could easily kill someone by accident.
Spider Man isn't the strongest superhero in Marvel, but he's still absurdly strong and agile compared to people without superpowers, even absolute units like Kingpin.
You make him not hold back so much and he'll snap you in half like a tooth pick and throw your body around like a rag doll.
And that's another thing: Peter was still holding back in this fight. If he didn't he'd kill Kingpin in the first punch.
Kingpin is a unit, but he's still a regular ass man going up against someone who just earlier in that story threw a whole ass sedan across the street, through a solid brick wall...
