The design is unintuitive, it’s not your fault. You should be able to just click and drag to the desktop from anywhere not some specific list of apps, but they chose to make it difficult.

A little late but it only works when you click on start, all apps, and scroll through each letter individually and then drag it, that’s how it worked for me
