As I recall from the movie, Artemis states to Parzival that "Gunters aren't willing to risk losing their crap." So perhaps some of the gunters did try going backwards, but they drove slowly because the thought of hitting the wall was on their minds. Since that didn't work, they must've deemed that driving backwards was not the answer. However, Parzival later finds out from Halliday that going backwards as fast as you can was the way to go. It was a leap of faith.

I wonder how many people noticed Christine was in the race and you also can see her jump from these clips at 1:03 it’s the car going off the 4th ramp from the left.
Maybe a complete flying hover conversion cost a lot more than Parzival could've afford to have done before getting the copper key or maybe flying costs a lot more coin in fuel than to drive and/or just do a simple hover. I know that sounds stupid, but I'm just spit-balling ideas based on the context we have at our disposal.
this is 100% it. They got the rights for the look of the BTTF DeLorean not the rigths for DMC so they putt KITTs scanner there for extra 80s reference points but@@Lactuent

If anybody has played any sort of driving game, there's always that one dude that goes backwards...the fact that no one thought of it, is a little silly. Sorry if i ruined this scene for anyone...this scene in general is badass and can be enjoyed regardless.
Your forgetting the a team van, the general Lee, all the autobots in their vehicle modes, terminators herse, station wagon, or motorcycle, burt Reynolds pontiac from smokey and the bandit, the terror truck from "duel".... the list goes on ngl. Heck you could even have a star wars dlc with lukes land speeder lol
