the added scenes with nishiki definitely make kiwami 1 definitive (for first time players at least) but I will always prefer the ps2 game. something about the ps2 and their games atmospheres and lighting is just amazing

It's an incredible remake, but sadly not easily accessible if DS emulation is a mixed bag.

Not a bad remakes, it's just disappointing for the most part and also, it gets flack due to everyone giving it the universal treatment which is honestly doesn't need that treatment. And what i don't like about Kiwami 1 & 2 is people treating it as a replacement of the Originals, which is clearly dumb. Although i really do recommend you start this journey with the OG games via the Restored mod in each. Edit: i'm not a Kiwami hater but again, Yakuza 0 was a more logical start next to playing the originals first.

I don't think they're good remakes, but I like them overall. I recently went back to platinum Kiwami 1 and enjoyed it despite its many shortcomings. I should get around to playing the HD collection on PS3 at some point, since it's been a very long time since I played them and I never finished OG 2 back in the day.

I played both yakuza ps2 and kiwami and i enjoy kiwami more. It's funny after i finished yakuza1 i try to play yakuza 2 on the ps2 and i quit it in the first 30 minutes. Once i saw the fixed angels were still there and the dodge was still trash i quit. Although, if i grew up with the ps2 games it would be different.

I feel like a crazy man when I said I didn't fall in love with Kiwami 1 and 2. As someone who never played the originals, I felt something was off about the remakes, especially the second one, like it was missing that somethin' somethin'. Loved Yakuza 0, liked Yakuza 3 (it isn't as bad as people make it out to be), but I didn't love Kiwami 1 and 2, thought the two games was ok and that was it

I only started the Yakuza series with Zero and I always felt Kiwami 1 and especially Kiwami 2 were rushed. I'd love to try to play the Original Yakuza 1 and 2 games. 16:58 You got the release dates switched up.

Yes, next question. But seriously I can see an argument being made for K1 being better than OG but for K2 I vastly prefer the original. For Ishin I haven't played the OG but I don't like the replaced music and faces, it just feels wrong. Especially how for one battle they replaced the amazing track that plays in it with town bully of all things. I also just don't like that it's in unreal, some things cause the game to run awfully like that one battle in the flames where Ryoma turns super saiyan for some reason. Can't say how well it compares to OG ishin but it's the first Yakuza game I just did not enjoy at all.

Yakuza Like a Dragon (7) spoiler . . . . . Speaking of the silly "knife" sound effect. They use a similar one during the scene where Kume stabs Masato at the very end. And just like the Y2K knife scene, it's made worse by it. I really don't understand why they feel the need to add that sound effect during these scenes...

Generally I agree, except I actually really liked Majima everywhere and that was a high point for me in the game due to how unexpected the encounters often were. Which was really needed because I really did not like the combat in Kiwami. Trash enemies barely attacked, but everyone else was really frustrating to fight because they would constantly guard and evade almost perfectly, which was only compounded by the fact that dragon style was near unusable if you didn't have any heat built up. Also Beast style got unfairly nerfed and FR Screw the final boss fight, it was terrible. Also, the hostess club minigame in K2 did expand on it, hostesses have perks which there was one type of perk that was honestly OP

(35:43) This is spot on. I actually feel the exact same way about the new Majima pirate game that's coming out. The only reason this game exists is because he's a popular character. His role as protagonist seems questionable to me. They even gave him amnesia for the events of this game's story to work.

I prefer the original games to the remakes, like the only good thing about Kiwami 1 is the Nishiki flashbacks except the final one

OG Yakuza 2 is peak in my eyes, I did not enjoy Kiwami 2 and its early Dragon Engine bs. Also the music replace was a war crime.

You are wrong about the statement that nothing transpired from Majima's saga into the main game. The fact that you can send Kiryu money (to buy him a gift) also unlocks some special weapons that don't break in the shop, and without them I won't ever been able to finish the battles against the Amon family. So yes, there is a point. And no mention about this mode makes me ask: did you even check Devola's barman missions? I agree with almost every one of your opinions about the flaws from these two remakes but also you didn't say anything new. All those critics have been comented over and over in the community and I can think myself a few more that nobody use to mention that would have improved your video. But again, maybe you didn't have the time to complete them to 100%. If you return to Kiwami 2 I recommend you to try those battles. I had a lot of fun with them and the harder version of each mission was really challenging. My general opinion about them is this: Yakuza Kiwami is better than Yakuza OG Yakuza 2 OG is better than Kiwami 2 Ishin OG is almost the same as Kiwami Ishin. Maybe I preferred the modeling and general color toning from the OG but the fact that Ishin Kiwami didn't run in that terrible dragon engine and had decent physics, was enough to make me enjoy And finally 😂... Majima Saga would be better than any Sayama expansion (I just don't give a f**k about her or any forced romance situations, including those in the Majima Saga itself)

Kiwami 1 was my introduction to the original Yakuza, and I was fairly disappointed when I realized it was essentially a DLC expansion to 0, just with an atrocious 3rd act as far as encounter design goes It really should have been given an extra year or so, because its clear they didn't have time to properly consider the particulars of Kiwami. It feels so sterile, even without having played the original

not sure if i’m the only one but ever since kiwami 2 was announced and i got my hands on it, i really wish they would have gone with the ps3 engine. I appreciate what kiwami 2 did with helping to find the dragon engine’s footing but thinking about yakuza 2 with the gameplay and visuals of yakuza 0 really makes me think about what could’ve been.

Very good video. I'm a big proponent in playing the series in release order as you can see how the series evolved, and it makes it easier to transition into the HD era (certainly easier than K2 to 3). I wish Sega and RGG would re-release the HD collection, with an English localization. Just use the Kiwami scripts, editing out the fluff that wasn't in the original. Include the first game's dub as a bonus since honestly, every LaD fan needs to experience that masterpiece of crap. I haven't played the original Ishin, but I noticed things felt off when I played the remake when it came out. Like how Tiger Drop was completely useless.

Yakuza 1 restored is my favourite way to revisit 1. Kiwami isnt bad, but I personally just love PS2 era games. I just wish the PS2 games were ported to modern systems and PC. Going from 0-Kiwami-Kiwami 2-3 is also just strange for new players, especially since I think release order is the best way to play the series.

The fist bouncing off the enemies took away the fun of combat when hitting various enemies at the same time, because it's guaranteed one of them is gonna block it when you are about to hit the heavy attack.

I mean it's literally just the original game ported to UE4, with the only changes being the trooper cards, recasting, and very slight combat tweaks. No idea why they chose to add "Kiwami" in the Japanese title since it's pretty much just a full-price rerelease over there.

Like the Resident Evil 5 green filter I never noticed it in re5 and Kiwami 2 until someone pointed it out.

As someone who played and beat the OG Yakuza 1 (while beating Amon in it too), Kiwami 1 is just... meh. It combines Yakuza 0 Combat, PS2 Cutscene Animations (outside of Nishiki's) with new models, green filter, and QUITE FRANKLY THE WORSE GUN BOSS I'VE EVER SEEN. Kiwami 1 isn't bad but it isn't good enough in my opinion to be praised like the second coming of Christ. My issues from Kiwami 1 just stem from the issues of Dragon just feeling... not as good. Double finishers take heat, can't pick people up or drag their feet, Komaki Parry doing jack and rather just being completely useless to perform with. Also why couldn't Dragon just be the only style like in Yakuza 1? I have mixed opinions for Kiwami as a mediocre remake that borrows from Yakuza 0 combat, mixing with how Yakuza 1 combat worked (which ends up sucking because of the fights being mostly group fights and JINGU. OH MY GOD WHY.) If you like Kiwami, that's alright no hate to ya and understandable if it's one of the first games you play in chronological order after 0. (I don't talk about Kiwami 2 because I believe Yakuza 2 is ultimately the BETTER one and I will not budge on that hill.)

great video, i agree with you on pretty much everything except with the first kiwami being extremely subpar, i think it's just subpar because at least they tried adding new content unlike kiwami 2 which removed tons of stuff. i really wish we got official ports of those games on modern platforms, i don't like when developers act like the remake must replace the original, they both offer different experiences and it should be up to the consumer to decide which version they want to play

BTW majima in kiwami 2 also has that counter move from y0 but it isn't mentioned anywhere.
