    My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

      IMHO to save the manufacturer money, the Speed Feed 500 is made from the finest "Chinesium" available anywhere !!
      These big machines produce big torque (and heat). The design does little to mitigate the heat transfer within the head thus "welding" the trimmer line and internals. Junior Engineers. This would've never happened with the original Shindaiwa design and manufacturing group before the merger.

    I am a former employee of The Dow Chemical Company. It could be the type of plastic being used. It needs to be a vulcanizable plastic. Which means the molecules have been cross-linked. You can not melt it. Regular plastic that isn’t cross-linked can be melted and re-used over and over.

      Could be, I need to look at my neighbor and I's 400s though. Why? Seeing the same issue on those. Twisting line, and what may be a melting issue. More investigation needed.
      They can fix this by adding some glass and they may need to change resin to an ASA or GF Nylon. That has GOT to be getting REALLY hot, because the string we used back when I was a landscaper was nylon, and that some high temp material.

    I bought 2 of these Echo 500 heads from an Echo dealer in June 2023. Put one on Echo trimmer and the other on a Sthil trimmer. I thought "finally" I have heads that work well and easy to load. Huge mistake !! I have the identical problem you show on both heads with the line melting and not feeding. I am not a commercial user just homeowner with a large yard. After 2 months of total frustration I removed the 500 heads and reinstalled old heads on both trimmers. I believe Brie you have solved the great mystery. That aluminum part will conduct the heat rapidly. It is also a substantial chunk of metal that will retain the heat and allow it to build in temperature as additional heat constantly travels down from the hot gearhead through the threads into the aluminum piece. There is no way for the heat to dissipate as there is almost zero air flow in this area. Unfortunately this large aluminum piece is a great idea that does not work. Poor engineering and testing by someone. I enjoy your videos so please keep up the great work !!

    I worked for Echo up in Canada for almost 10 years, and when I started they were an amazing company to deal with, but over the years, their attitudes towards customer complaints has been just wrong. I was a territory manager, which is basically the rep for an area, and the number of times I would bring a complaint up to the office from a dealer, and they would just tell me that the end user must be using it wrong, or anything along those lines was insane. I had a dealer buy almost 600 SF500's from me when they came out, and as soon as they started selling them, they started coming back. This same dealer sold over a thousand heads every year to they end users, and never had any out of ordinary failures. Once they had the SF500's for more than a couple weeks, failure after failure. Called our tech department, let them know they were having issues, and of course it was just user error. So, I quit.. Lol! Great videos, and info! Love your content!

    • @Chickanic
      @Chickanic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for letting me know! Do you think they were melting? They really do make you feel like you're crazy for bringing up an issue, but I am confident with my findings. Your confirmation is icing on the cake.

    • @dustinwild
      @dustinwild 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From what the dealer was saying is yes they were melting. It seemed like they used a different type of plastic on the 500's. Customers were using them the exact same as the 450's, but all sudden the top spacers were melting into the top plate of the head. Plus eating up the bottom cap. Just inferior plastic.
      I could give you stories upon stories of things that mechanics complained to me about, and I'd bring it up the ladder, and it would go no where. Sad really.

    I think you are spot on. That metal part is acting like a heat sink, but instead of dispersing into the air, it is dispersing into the trimmer head. Plus, all that heat will turn the plastic brittle and could cause a total failure and have the head fly off the trimmer. I'll stick with my 400 and 450 heads. I even have replacement tops for them.

    The aluminum is drawing heat (because it is used industrially as a heat sink) so the heat is wicking into the plastic head.
    The old style is brass so it is more resistant to heat soak

    Here is Australia we have the 375 and 450 speedfeed heads. I’ve found a similar issue with contractors using the 450 head and to much line fed out at a time. I have a couple of contractors who will not use a guard and line trimmer to keep the fed line at a certain length, these couple are always the ones coming back with burnt out clutches and melted line in the 450 heads. I’ve found the issue is worse with ones who use the thicker diamond edge line.

    Nice detective work!
    I have been using a 500 for a year now and do have the string (usually just one side or the other) stick every now and then, maybe once every 2 restrings. I have never had it stuck so bad I had to take the cap off, just a hard pull by hand on the stuck side pops it loose but your findings make sense and is almost certainly why that is happening from time to time on mine.
    I imagine the guys that are getting that chunk of aluminum hot enough to cause the more severe melting issues are running the trimmers for long periods of time in tough conditions which is not my use case, I very seldom am running my trimmer for more than 10 minutes at a time so my trimmers gearbox probably never gets hot enough to cause those more severe string sticking problems or melting/softening of the head.
    One comment you made at the beginning of the video was that it holds the same amount of string as the 450, that is actually incorrect and is the sole reason I switched to the 500 from the 450's I've been using for 20 years.... I can fit 25% more of the line I use on the 500 vs the 450 which gets me an extra 4 to 14 days between restrings depending on the time of year, and it does that while ending up weighing slightly less fully loaded and at basically the same external dimensions as the 450 head.

Echo should have a (DTAC) Dealer Technical Assistance Center help line to report these types of early failure modes. If they react quickly, the problem can be resolved with minimal cost. If it drags on too long, it becomes allot more expensive to address. Echo needs to wake up here.

      If you still have the 500 head, try this: For fun, take a hax saw, cut several slits down through the metal casting, or turn the metal casting on its side and drill a bunch of 1/8 inch holes through the casting, then, put it all together and go out and cut the thickest grass you can find and see of the string melts. I'll bet the string no longer melts together! The heat needs to dissipate out of that big chunk of metal. Try it and let us know if that fixes the problem. I'll bet it does! Lee

    You are spot on! I purchased the head for my Echo 3020 about 10 times within 7 months. I just bought a speedfeed 500 two weeks ago and within 3 days encountered these exact problems! Will never buy the speed feed 500 again! Thank for you insightful posts! I thought it just was my line!

    I just finally pulled the trigger to buy the 3020 and I was so happy until I started to have to pull the feed head off and restring it on the first use! Same exact problem. The line was like wrapped under the line and I was having to cut It out. I now know why. Thank you for the video!
    Ps- I use this on my personal lawn only!

Just bought a small Echo with some kind of speed feed head... never heard of them before that... my Husqvarna 325L finally would not respond to a couple of days of not firing (with at least a weak spark). Can't complain, it's seen heavy use for 22? years. As always, find your videos fascinating!

    I have a speed-feed head from a dozen years ago. The line jams up in it too. To keep it working as good as possible, when it starts malfunctioning, I have to disassemble it, soak the parts in hot water with a cleaner solution, and reassemble. Works much better, but NOTHING in in the contemporary world works as advertised.

    OMFG!!!! This is it!! I got a 40V Ryobi trimmer last summer... I know I know...but my wife said they were on sale and we just gave our son who just bought a new house all our gas powered stuff which I had brought up there to do his lawn regularly while he was deployed. Its good and powerful enough but the head sucked and I found out I could put a speedfeed 500 universal on it I was happy! Don't remember any real problems last year but this year I cant go 3 minutes on a cool day without it sticking to itself. I literally just fought with it for 2 hours and googled it and here you are with your video! The center metal pieces didn't seem hot when I pulled off the cap though but I can see the spots where it melted to itself. I've been watching your channel for awhile but missed this one until now... I tried the trimmer in a bucket of water trick and all this other stuff before I realized what was going on....Its melting! I tried the Ryobi on the low setting thinking maybe its too many RPMs.. nope still sticks. . NOW What do I do??.... but another one? do they make a 450 universal? OH WAIT!! You posted a link!! I love you!!! thanks for being here!!

    So glad I found your video. I’ve been trying to figure out what the heck has been wrong with my trimmer head. Went to my Echo dealer to get the 450 head. They said they would send my 500 head back to Echo so they can see the issue. But heck, I kept thinking it was the trimmer line, so I’d go out and get a different brand or size and nothing worked. But good news is, I won’t have to buy trimmer line for the next 5 years. 😆 Thank you!!

  • @markf8256
    @markf8256 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Had Stihl FS-56 for many years. Shaft broke last season. Only replaced the head on it once but they did on occasion get very hot where the line would stick but not as bad as your demo.
    I just considered it annoying replaced the line and moved on.
    That trimmer did not have a lube port on the end of the shaft so I have to imagine the heat was being transferred through to the head especially during longer runs.
    Oh, and thanks for the “heads” up. 😉

    Hey Bre ... It is so good that you are bringing this out to the forefront ........ IMHO It Is a Safety Issue !!!
    What happenes if it gets sooo hot that eventually it melts like it has been on the surface of the sun and then a guy goes to bump it and it "POOF " EXPLODES ALL OVER THE PLACE !!!
    Lodging pieces into someones leg or someone else who is walking by .... You get what I am saying !!!
    You are 100% right about the company will NEVER say that someone else has came forward with the same info .... That will never happen !!!
    You are doing the right thing and you should never think twice about a safety issue..
    Its good to see that you are busy and are working . That says alot for your work and business !
    Take care and dont work to hard !!! lol

    Great video!!!! I am a homeowner who uses a string trimmer.....no commercial volume. I gave up on "bump" heads years ago, tired of constant jams. I tried a number of different "bump" heads. My solution was to buy a head (sorry....I have forgotten the brand name) that requires 4 pieces of string to be cut and hand fed into four holders creating 8 strings that do the cutting. I use 4, 18 inch long pieces each time I refill the head (hint....cut a bunch of pieces to have ready). I get about 3 to 4 uses before I have to pull out the worn pieces to replace with new pieces. I drilled out the holes to accommodate larger diameter string and I also discovered there are BIG differences in the quality/durability of string.....I recommend paying more for better quality and endurance.

    • @ackack1
      @ackack1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agree. The melting, aka welding, has been a problem on bump heads forever, regardless of either string or hardware brand. I also have gone the "pieces" route. In all fairness, I have not tried a SpeedFeed because the principle is the same; i.e., wrapped line around a spool exposed to intense spinning heat.. Maybe somehow the 400's don't weld or at least weld as much. I might try one.

    I worked for an Auto Parts Distribution Warehouse. I'm a retired Mechanic, small engines to Vehicle engines. I rebuilt 1,2 and 4bbl Carbs. The needle on one GM Carb kept hanging up with two different kits from SMP. I went to the illustrated guide catalog, (yes I'm that old), looked up the contents of the kit and discovered a #87 needle valve where a #78 belonged. (they come in a cellophane pkg with the number stamped on the pkg.) I notified SMP. They took back my stock of that number kits and replaced them. I also got a refund, at the time, $15. 1987. Aluminum dissipates heat while brass retains it. Dealers like you who go the extra mile are often the only defense consumers have. Thank goodness you have the curiosity and the will to go the extra mile!

    I had an Echo homeowner grade trimmer a few years ago that was doing the same thing. I thought it was something I was doing wrong when I loaded the trimmer line. I've been slowly transitioning over to Stihl for my power equipment. Unfortunately, built-in obsolescence is the next phase after taxation, inflation, and medication, as a way to continue to bleed us dry.

    Just bought a 3020T w/500 head and having same issue with Echos black diamond and their orange tripper line. On TH-cam right now to see if anyone else seeing this and found your video! Thanks so much for taking the time to make it and bring this to lite. I'm going to try some bigger string and see if that helps or look for an old 450 head and see if the plastic insert will fit in the 500.
