Thanks for your great videos. I was a tile setter with Brick layers and Allied Craftsman for 20 years. I've been out of the business for 30 years though. Just did a laundry room floor in my house using products that weren't available 20 - 30 years ago. Used Ditra Ultra (oh man that eats the thinset). Now switching to pre mixed grout based on this one. I'm learning new products and techniques from your videos. Thanks!
Loved your statement about continuous learning. Just had a “tile guy” give me the “that’s new tech I haven’t heard of before” about the grout you’re using in this video!
Just wanted to say this video was awesome. I watched it like 5 times before grouting my backsplash with flexcolor cq. The only video I saw with the 2 bucket concept and you absolutely nailed it. I don't normally leave comments but had to say you rocked it with this one. Thank you! My backsplash came out perfect.
Two buckets is a really good idea. I have been doing it for a while now. Saves a ton of time. Keeps things clean. Also yes, mixed grout is terrible now. Horrible color consistency, especially with darker colors. Pre-mixed is a pain to work with but I agree the color consistency alone is worth the trouble.
I can't take anybody seriously, if they like premix better than hand mix. And that new nasty sets too fast FA Mapei is horrible. Our Lowes got rid of ALL regular grout, & every tile person up here in our rural area, can't use it & have destroyed their work. I literally drive an hour each way, just to get a good grout at Home Depot. Don't ruin your hard work, with shoddy new upgrade products, if they're just a nightmare. It's not worth it. I'll never use that Mapei FA again. Heck no 😅
This instructional video showcases exceptional craftsmanship, reflecting extensive hands-on experience and a genuine commitment to learning. Key Takeaways: Pre-Wetting: Pre-wetting the substrate is a highly effective technique, especially in hot conditions. It enhances lubricity, cools the surface, and extends working time before the grout hardens, facilitating easier removal of excess material. Additionally, moisture within the joint ensures stronger adhesion, resulting in a more robust assembly. Two-Bucket System: Implementing a two-bucket system is a straightforward and practical approach to achieving a clean surface without overworking it. Microfiber Enhancement: Attaching a microfiber cloth to a flat trowel, possibly incorporating a third bucket of clean water, could further improve cleaning efficiency. Premixed Grout Advantages: Opting for premixed grout offers consistent texture and flexibility in the cured material, reducing the likelihood of cracking at corners or wall joints due to vibrations or subtle wall movements. Efficient Material Use: Emphasizing the importance of cleaning, each installation step should aim to use the minimal amount of material necessary to fill the joint. The demonstrated method of utilizing a small section of the float is particularly commendable. While cementitious grout has been employed since ancient Egyptian times, its traditional application methods, which often involved spreading over large areas and subsequent cleaning, can be wasteful. Modern techniques, as highlighted in this video, represent a significant and positive evolution in grouting practices.
Thank you very much ! I feel confident now to use a premixed grout. Just a caveat: NOT all green scrub pads are the same! Some are impregnated with a grit which will definitely scratch your Shiney tiles. Choose Carefully, or use a white scrub pad. Respect 👊
This is the most informative video I have seen you do, and I have probably watched about 30-40 of your videos. I also want to thank you for your humility in your "learning all the time" statement. Thank You Again
I used bag mix grout today, I wanted to cry. It was such a dumb “baker” situation. The first time I tiled I used pre mixed, and it was a shit show, but overall outcome looked way better than todays grout mix bag. With your tips on using pre mix, I think it’ll go better next time I use pre mix. I learned a lot from your video that I definitley did not do that time.
Shannon thank you for the tips! My first time! Spectralock 1. And I used the short end of the float too! And.. your two bucket system worked great! ,zero haze . You throw k and I am subscribin! 😊 Jeff
Well done Schannon. I like your work ethic. Work a small area at a time. Keep everything clean and think the problems through in a methodical manner. 👍🏻✌🏻🍷🏴
This video helped me so much! I hired someone to do my bathroom...and 3 months later my grout is washing away and crumbling...now I am redoing it myself. The contractor blamed it on bad grout...not mixing it correctly was the problem!
I just started doing a shower refresh... only removed some of the grout as there were sections that I couldn't get the mold out of. Otherwise the tile and grout is in good shape. I started with the premix and was frustrated with how much was not getting into the grout lines. None of the videos I watched used premixed grout so I presumed it was the grout that was problematic but now I see what the issue is... this was helpful and now I can go back and finish the job with your advice. thanks!
Your adorable! 😂 Not in a weird way, 😜just watched your video because I am using the ready-made grout for the first time and am glad that I did because I wouldn’t have known to use a different method so thank you so much!
Shannon, great instructional video especially your two bucket wash method. You've reinforced my decision on using Spectralock 1 for the grout. I'm converting a bath to shower and will be putting in at least one gran bar, do you have any insight or a video for the best way through a porcelain wall? Thanks
Thanks for the video and tips.. am about to do my very first grouting job on a 3.5 sqft tiled area (yes, i tiled it myself) in front of our fireplace, and really needed the tips on how to grout with a pre-mix grout!! Much appreciated!
Beauty video. Well spoken. I have only used Flexcolour CQ for premix. Cleaning grout lines is brutal. Just cleaned floor to ceiling 4x8 tile in a shower base install... Death! I was decently tidy with the thinset but ugh.
Wish i saw this prior to using Mepei Flexcolor CQ for a backslash install. The install was fine and the color consistency was great but cleaning was painful. I applied and cleaned in small areas every 2-3 minutes but the hazing was bad. Took me an extra 1-2 days just cleaning the haze left off the tiles and some countertop areas. Also, I think those sticky quartz beads in the grout scratched my glazed ceramic tiles - luckily its not easily noticeable. Does spectralite grout use abrasive materials that could scratch polished tiles?
Great info! I just used Mapei KeraColor and was unhappy with the variation in shades. Their picture-only instructions on the bag didn’t help much since they lacked any details about the process. Will go with the added cost of pre-mixed grout from now on.
I use the short side of the float too. I'm a big strong guy, but with that Flexcolour it falls of the float first of all and also won't flow into the lines. I want to make sure the grout lines are completely full.
Thanx great tips ! I’m going to use Mapei flex color cq premix for 1/8 joint 3x6 ceramic subway backsplash will it scratch my datile Home Depot tiles ?
I used mapei premixed for the first time the other day and didnt know about the haze not coming off so easy like regular grout, had to scrub all the tile. Wish I had seen this a few days earlier 😅
@11:00 You're exactly right, plus nobody's going to call the original tile contractor back after 20 years, if they can even remember who it was. They're going to hire a handyman e.g. me.
Excellent advice. Thank you! I wish I had watched this before I grouted the white 12x24 shower tiles with Silicone ... it's a mess. I'm trying to cover my imperfect grout job.
@@ThatTileChick I used (3) Grout Commercial 100% Silicone Sealant 381 Bright White. I am cleaning up the wavy white porcelain shower tile surface again. Then, I will use a plastic putty knife to smooth and level a new application of white Fast Dry Caulk Plus Silicone White. Since this is my first shower tile project I need all the help I can get. In the Master Bathroom floor I am putting in 8x8 encaustic tile, and your video on putting up this tile is very helpful! Thanks!
Would you use the pre-mix grout on a re-grout job in a shower? The space between tiles is less than 1/8th in. I don't know if original grout was sanded or not. I have scraped the old grout with a grout removal tool. Thanks
Hi Shannon! So glad to have found your video. I am just starting to put on my grout and the timing couldn't be any better. Back to the store with the powder and looking for the pre-mix. All of this with great nails too! Wish I would have found this channel earlier. Enjoy your craft and subway looks good from here.
I wish I could say I had a choice, but I am finding contractors through the county to modify a bathroom for my disabled son and I've found after two contractors on the same bathroom, I'm not getting decent work.
Good video thanks, Question.... I grouted the other day and then noticed it had little airholes in the grout after it dried, not sure why. Can i just re-grout over the holes?
I really appreciate you calling out the ANSI standard here. I have been watching these videos (how to grout your tile shower!) for a few months and it's never been clearer after watching any other video that the remodelers who did our house did not all know what they were doing. So I've got my grout saw... all my tools... I noticed that nobody who does this video is ever "patching over a failed seal on recently remodeled shower" - would you ever consider doing this, or should I be digging out all the crappy grout job and redoing the whole thing? What can I do with the spaces in the corner where the plane changes, they left at least a quarter inch space for grout and they're obviously too big to use a bead of silicone now? (Why didn't my home inspector catch any of this? Crooked realtor recommended a friendly rubber stamp inspector? Ever heard of a positive outcome in cases such as this, or am I on the hook for $20k remodel now?)
To be fair, we bought it 3 years ago and I don't know what I'm doing either but I'm not a contractor. They did not use any silicone in the entire shower other than around the water controls. We have big grout lines in the corner where every plane changes, they all are wearing out in the spaces that had the most exposure to water. We had a handy-guy friend come over and try to add silicone in the spaces where grout was used, but it was unsuccessful, the grout seal definitely failed and the grout absorbs any water that it touches. Lucky we have another shower in the house. We started to notice cracks within the first 6 months like you say. Thanks again for doing this video, and again I really appreciate calling out the standard because I'm not a contractor and I don't know this stuff, but I have been hearing people say "don't put grout in that space" and they never show what to do in that space, everybody just fast-forwards to "ok we're done grouting" and you see this beautiful corner, and nothing has been said about how it got like that, other than "don't put grout!" Even in Home RenoVision's full bathroom remodel video, he skips right over this part.
I thought there was also a chance I'm ahead of myself with my grout saw and the right thing to do now is to just dig out all the grout from where it wasn't supposed to go, fill it with silicone, and douse the entire area with impregnator sealer. But very much afraid this will turn out poorly and we'll be at it again in a few years. I figure if we're going to do it at all, probably worth redoing the whole thing now. If you read this far, my actual question is, is it possible to add grout to grout or am I setting myself up to failure if I don't remove basically all of the grout before I start adding more grout now? Is it OK to just dig out enough grout so I can put down a new layer of grout? Will my new grout adhere to the old grout if it's clean, or do I want to dig out all the existing grout down all the way to the backer board?
We're from Jersey... we don't pump our gas, we pump our fists!!! And... we move our hands A LOT when we talk LOL!!! Sorry guys, I couldn't resist. RESPECT for educating & sharing knowledge. That tile is really dope guys. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
So I tiled around an American Standard Ovation fiberglass shower. I understand you said gout in the corners were the tile meets, should I also grout at the ceiling(tile goes up to ceiling) and also were the tile meets the fiberglass walls?
This was such a great video-i just wish I had watched this prior to me attempting to regrout the shower this weekend! I had to take a razor blade to the tiles because I let it dry! Water doesn’t break through this very well does it? We had a shower leak years ago and had the shower regrouted. I went to patch some cracks this weekend and am hoping it holds well
I wish I'd seen this video a few weeks ago! I might have tried tackling this myself. Is there any scenario in which the thin-set, mesh tape, and aquadefense would extend 2-3 inches PAST the tile onto the finished wall? I ask because that's how my shower was tiled, and the tilers are telling me to skim the area with joint compound and paint it. However, the drywall was newly installed and painted days before they started. I'm not sure if there was a reason to do it like this, or if the tilers just misjudged how far they planned to bring the tile and I should be asking them to fix it..
I wish I had known about caulking plane changes- I'm currently digging out cracked grout where a contractor did not do this and the grout between the floor and outside wall has cracked in just a few months (very cold climate) and no, I'm not going to make the contractor do it. When he fixes mistakes things ususally get worse.
when I use urethane grout I do about 3-4 sq feet at a time and wipe down as I go ...always worked for me. I prefer to use it when I can because when I do it that way there is 0 clean up...no going back and wiping away the haze...
Is this a sanded grout ? I have access to the flexcolor cq and it says it’s sanded. So can I use this on glazed wall tiles without any concern ? Those tiles your doing appear glazed so I’m assuming it’s ok .
Great video loaded with very helpful information. I have a quick question. I am grouting a shower floor 2"x2" porcelain tiles, I was going to use Fusion pro premix grout from Custom Building Products that doesn't need to be sealed or Simple Grout from same company that needs to be sealed afterwards. The Fusion Pro is twice the cost so just wondering what you would advise?
is the transition between tile and tube considered a change of plane? the sanded grout that was used to fill the almost 1 inch (at the most) gap between tub and tile is molding, cracking away from the tub and some is cracking off.
I have just completed tiling a fireplace surround. Some of the edge tiles abut the wooden mantel or the painted walls. Should I mask the grout lines of those tiles with blue painter's tape or something else? Is there any way to work more meticulously where the grout lines meet wood or wallboard so the white grout doesn't smear against the wood or paint?
Ma'am, that was an awesome tutorial. I'm an old retired Marine who is trying to refresh the grout in my 60 year old kitchen floor. I recently tried to "paint" it and it was a disaster and realized it would not last. I'd rather apply something that will out last me. Having said that would you recommend the Spectralock 1 as a viable solution, and if so where can I purchase it? Thanks and Semper Fi Ken
Semper Fi Ken! I would highly recommend either Laticrete Spectralok 1 or Mapei Flexcolor CQ both are similiar products and can be found at your local floor and decor. If not you can order it online no problem
Thank you Ma'am. I'm torn between doing it myself or hiring someone with experience in grout refresh. The question becomes is the juice worth the squeeze? In any event, God bless and rock on @@ThatTileChick
i used a pre mixed grout when tiling my fireplace hearth and it stained my hardwood floors really bad as i grouted the outside edge/trim, any tips to get it off quickly or prevent staining?
For a scenario like that I would tape off any surface that isn’t going to receive grout. So if I’m grouting a transition from tile to wood I would put blue tape or purple tape (won’t remove finish if left on too long) and then grout. Also keep in mind tile to any hard surface should like a termination should be getting a flexible sealant like grout color matched silicone or grout color matched acrylic caulk!
I came for the grout and left with life lessons. Thank you.

Very helpful! Thank you!
This was such a great video-i just wish I had watched this prior to me attempting to regrout the shower this weekend!
I had to take a razor blade to the tiles because I let it dry!
Water doesn’t break through this very well does it? We had a shower leak years ago and had the shower regrouted. I went to patch some cracks this weekend and am hoping it holds well
If you applied grout release first, do you still wet the tile before using Spectralock?
Is this a sanded or unsanded?
On the first step, is it necessary to clean all the old grout out or can you just remove "enough" with a scraper?
Going to try fusion pro for the 1st time
I wish I'd seen this video a few weeks ago!
🐕 🐶 huu huu huuu😂😂
Good job 👍🏼
First time home owner with a need to regrout a shower here!! Can you use this on the shower floor as well?
Do you need a special grout sealer for this type of grout?
when I use urethane grout I do about 3-4 sq feet at a time and wipe down as I go ...always worked for me. I prefer to use it when I can because when I do it that way there is 0 clean up...no going back and wiping away the haze...
Small sections are a must !
Absolutely
Tried using the link to your tools. Getting 'Sorry we couldn't find that page.' I am interested in your tools and materials.
Should I use silicone around the shower floor where it meets the shower walls?
Is this a sanded grout ? I have access to the flexcolor cq and it says it’s sanded. So can I use this on glazed wall tiles without any concern ? Those tiles your doing appear glazed so I’m assuming it’s ok .
If the grout in a store bought tub seems a bit too dry, can you add water and mix it?
Great work!
Could a person seal the tile before you grout?
Question, do you seal the grout after? About the corners, so I take off the grout and replace it with silicon, would that not look a little pit messy?
Great video loaded with very helpful information. I have a quick question. I am grouting a shower floor 2"x2" porcelain tiles, I was going to use Fusion pro premix grout from Custom Building Products that doesn't need to be sealed or Simple Grout from same company that needs to be sealed afterwards. The Fusion Pro is twice the cost so just wondering what you would advise?
We always er on the side of caution with grouts and use the stronger (and usually more expensive product) for our installations.
@@ThatTileChick Thanks, I am going to grab the better product. 🍺🍻🍺 CHEERS!!!
is the transition between tile and tube considered a change of plane? the sanded grout that was used to fill the almost 1 inch (at the most) gap between tub and tile is molding, cracking away from the tub and some is cracking off.
How do you feel about using epoxy grout to lay tile/grout over an old fiberglass shower pan?
I have just completed tiling a fireplace surround. Some of the edge tiles abut the wooden mantel or the painted walls. Should I mask the grout lines of those tiles with blue painter's tape or something else? Is there any way to work more meticulously where the grout lines meet wood or wallboard so the white grout doesn't smear against the wood or paint?
How do you keep the silicone in the corners from getting mold? I haven’t really had a problem with grout but the silicone always gets mold. Thanks!
Thanks! Is it okay to apply grout down between the floor of a shower and wall to fill large gaps prior to caulking?
Ma'am, that was an awesome tutorial. I'm an old retired Marine who is trying to refresh the grout in my 60 year old kitchen floor. I recently tried to "paint" it and it was a disaster and realized it would not last. I'd rather apply something that will out last me. Having said that would you recommend the Spectralock 1 as a viable solution, and if so where can I purchase it?
Thanks and Semper Fi
Ken
Semper Fi Ken! I would highly recommend either Laticrete Spectralok 1 or Mapei Flexcolor CQ both are similiar products and can be found at your local floor and decor. If not you can order it online no problem
Thank you Ma'am. I'm torn between doing it myself or hiring someone with experience in grout refresh. The question becomes is the juice worth the squeeze? In any event, God bless and rock on @@ThatTileChick
Best chainsaw repair vid I've seen yet! I'll probably watch another 15 or 16 times just to make sure I didn't miss anything...
How long time does it take liki your job?
I'm tilein my kitchen I did not know about the corners I do now
i used a pre mixed grout when tiling my fireplace hearth and it stained my hardwood floors really bad as i grouted the outside edge/trim, any tips to get it off quickly or prevent staining?
For a scenario like that I would tape off any surface that isn’t going to receive grout. So if I’m grouting a transition from tile to wood I would put blue tape or purple tape (won’t remove finish if left on too long) and then grout. Also keep in mind tile to any hard surface should like a termination should be getting a flexible sealant like grout color matched silicone or grout color matched acrylic caulk!
