Was just getting stuff together to grout a kitchen back splash with the UltraColor when this video popped up in my youtube feed. So I just took my time and did small sections and then worked the grout and cleaned the tiles without getting to far ahead of myself. The job came out great. So glad I found this video, Thanks.
Hi ,I am an experienced tiler 32 yrs tiling in NZ and use Ultracolour.Just mix enough grout to do one wall at a time, start sponging down what you started after 10 minutes even if you are still grouting, just stop and do it,then carry on grouting.after you have sponged it down twice ,wait 20 minutes and buff the tiles with an old towel.
Good advice. This is great grout but you can only do small areas at a time. I work this grout out of a 2 gallon bucket so I don't mix too much at once. It is nice because it doesn't wash the color out.
@@SirenaSpades you think so? Try doing more than you should at one time, then come back and tell us how inefficient it is after u spend 3 times as long scraping and scrubbing dried grout
Never done much diy but the way this dude teaching and demonstrating makes me feel confident l can do whatever he teaches. He is honest and sincere in sharing his knowledge for poor people like me, god bless you, great job.❤.
WARNIN TO ALL!! Yes Jeff!!! You are absolutely right!!! Unknowingly (used what the tile place sold me and didn't read the instructions) I used ULTRACOR PLUS....now I'm trying to figure out how to clean off the grout off of the tiles I didn't wipe off in time!! To top it off, it is a textured flat white tile. The only thing I find that works is using a scraper/jack knife and a lot of elbow grease!!! Damn 😡😡 I have done tiles in the past but didn't realize the difference in the products. BE SURE OF WHAT PRODUCT YOU ARE USING!! Thanks for all your videos! Keep up the great work.
This is savior Jeff. I am thanking God that I found your video. I am literally about to start my grouting job in hour. The person in Lowe's recommended this very grout for reason being it doesn't need sealing. OMG - Had I not seen this video, all my bathroom renovation that is on its last leg to completion (not to forget very expensive mosaic tiles that my wife picked and I installed) would have been ruined. Can not thank you enough !!
Thanks for sharing this video. I saw this and the comments just before grouting bathroom wall tiles. I'm so glad i saw it. I'm not very experienced at tiling/grouting however somehow made this product work. This is how i did it 1) Used Cold water when mixing this grout. 2) Hand mixed the grout. I had seen a separate video about how this guy mixed it with a high rpm drill and heated it up. 3) Worked in sections. Did a wall of 7ft x 3ft. Cleaned. Then moved on to the next section. Painful..i know. 4) Mixed half a bag first (5lbs) and then the rest of the bag. 5) Cleaning the bucket after the previous grout had hardened seemed to work the best. Knock the dried grout out of it by turning it upside down. Something i noticed was when i had it mixed perfectly, there was a shine on the grout. That lasted me well over 45min of working time with it. I did make a bad batch and it lasted about 15min or less. All i kept thinking about of 'peanut butter'. 😂
I just finished my kitchen backsplash working with the Ultracolor grout. Did a ton of research before i tackled the project. Only my 2nd backsplash ever, and it came out great. Some tips for anyone researching what to do. 1. Dump the whole bag in a bucket. Got 2 or more bags? Throw them all in there 2. Mix the grout dry in the bucket with a paddle mixer and drill on low to not kick up to much dust. 3. Work in small batches. I did 3 lbs at a time. 4. Add 3.5 ounces of water per ib of grout. 5. I used distilled water to prevent any inconsistencies in the color. I even put it in the fridge to allow myself more working time on the grout. 6. IMPORTANT....Mix by hand. I used a putty knife. It takes about 2-3 minutes of mixing to get the right consistency. Avoid temptation to add water! 7. After i got all 3lbs of grout on the wall i was able to take my time and check my work before i started to sponge. gave me about 30-45 minutes of working time. 8. Once that was done I went over the wall with different lighting to see if any touch ups were needed. Marked with a dry erase marker, and touched them up when I mixed the next batch. 9. Repeat the process till all done. (Save a small batch of grout in a ziploc bag to use for patches just in case if you can) 10. Take your time. I gave myself the entire day to get it done. No need to rush if you are a diyer. I have to stare at this tile for years to come. Take the day and get it right.
Thanks, Jeff! I just used Ultracolor on our shower floor - my first grouting project ever. I very nearly returned it, but your video and the other comments made me feel like I could use it if I treated it with the care and respect it deserved. I watched this three time before I started. Because your video described all the ways it could go wrong, I was able to use the high-tech stuff and have it come out wonderfully. This community you've built is fabulous!
This information needs to be inserted in front of all your grouting videos. My first tiling experience ended today with this grout. WoW. I thought I was slow but now know the grout is super fast to set! I got it all on and then had to work with a wet sponge to soften before using the float. All is good and I'm very happy with the results. I watched many of your videos and couldn't have done this without your hints and directions!
I just made this exact choice! I'm a first time diy'er and was like oh great I don't have to deal it! Luckily I had an assistant to help keep things clean. I didn't read the instructions carefully. And it worked out well for me, luckily.
@@Jeremyschannel1Just get that old grout, & seal it later. This seems like a nightmare & not worth the risk. Sometimes, things happen while your grout is hazing up, anyways, and the old stuff you can somewhat get wet & rework a bit, if there's some issue in an area. This sounds like it's set up like cement, and FAST. I just bought some the other day. I'm glad I found this video.
WOW! YOU PROBABLY JUST SAVED MY BUTT WITH THIS INFO!!!. I grout tomorrow for someone who hired me and I didn't know about this grout. I read the directions religiously but your sir, have amazing timing as far as I'm concerned. I will be mixing small batches and getting it done with a new mindset now. Thank you very much!!!
You can also wet (lightly!) the tiles down before using the rapid setting grout, it'll save you some time. If you have a problem with it getting too hard find a spacer or tooth brush butt to score excess grout out, as long as they are the size of the grout joints or slightly bigger.
First time working with tile here, thank you for the warning Jeff! I ended up still using it after careful reading, prep, and someone to help sponge the area (though it was entirely feasible to do it on my own). This grout worked like a charm and I had plenty of time to grout my backsplash (3x5' area) without worrying about drying too quickly. I think it probably took me about 30 minutes to grout, wipe, sponge, and clean up. I even bagged up the still wet excess grout before throwing it in the garbage. For reference, I mixed the 10 lb bag with 1 liter of cold water, and the a/c was at 68 Fahrenheit (it's Louisiana in the summer so I was cautious). If you're a beginner like me, are doing this solo and prefer to take it easy and have some leeway, definitely use the Keracolor, however it's totally doable with this grout you just have to be prepared. I bought the Ultracolor grout without realizing the differences to regular grout, so I'm very happy I found this clip when I was researching this project.
I'm a DIYer who used this product this last weekend. if I hadn't watched this video beforehand and followed the warnings, I would've mixed the whole bag in one shot, made an enormous mess, and ruined a huge tile job. Watched this video, followed the warnings, broke up the job and the grout into smaller batches. Thanks Jeff!
@@LVCID777 love the results, wish I had trusted the product and instructions more. They know EXACTLY what needs to be done to have it look perfect. I fiddled a bit much and ended up putting in more work than was needed.
I actually grouted a large(ish) shower area using this very stuff today. I do have experience in tiling and grouting but as I haven't done any for quite a few years I decided to only mix half a bag and not the full bag as the instructions suggested. I am so glad I did. You are absolutely correct Jeff, it goes off VERY quickly!!! I was working at my sister's and used two bags on the job but towards the end I had a right sweat on and was really up against it! Fortunately I managed to get the stuff off and get the joints looking exactly as she wanted them but do take note viewers! Great information Jeff, I only wish I'd watched this last night!🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much.. can I just say you're a LIFE saver. We almost bought the Ultra because we were told to pick up the grout by the contractor who only specified sanded or unhanded based on our grout lines. I said.. hang on (to the husband), let me see what Jeff has to say. I literally opened YT and searched your name and grout and bam. All I can say is thank you my dear, this was so helpful and a true value to your followers! 😊🙏💖
Huge thank you for posting this! I had already purchased this grout for my bathroom project and given my limited tiling experience, I worked on small sections at a time anyway. This stuff dries wicked fast but I knew what to expect because of your post and everything turned out beautifully. But I silently thank you a few times while working on it!
OMG, I'm so glad I checked this out. I bought this grout, actually read the directions, and came looking for one of your videos just as a refresher. This isn't my first bathroom tile job, but I'm FAR from an expert. Time to head back to the store before I ruin my bathroom floor. Thanks, Jeff!
You know, on TH-cam there are so many people that you’re not sure of, but you then find a really great gem, and you just get on board with it, because you know that they *really do know* what they’re talking about, and this is one channel you can trust! Wild applause all round 🥳 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I don't even care that he's Canadian that's how awesome this guy is! 😂 no really tho as a 2 year in self employed contractor I have to say that a thank you couldn't cover the debt of gratitude I have for the knowledge I've gained from this channel. 🙏
OMGOODNESS thank you, I was watching this video while my husband was putting that grout on the wall. You actually saved us, I ran to him and told him what you said and we were able to get it off the wall. I ran and filled three buckets of cold water and kept changing the water with clean water as he cleaned the grout off the walls. Thank you again 🙏
This gentleman is right about that Ultracolor Plus. The key with anything is reading the instructions before you begin and actually FOLLOWING THEM! I tiled 550sq ft in my home and it was the first time I ever did tiling so I am your typical DYI guy. I did my research because I am a sucker for details, including this grout and he is spot on about only applying a portion then wiping it off. I found removing that grout within or right at 10 minutes was the perfect timing to do so. Eventually I mixed it a little different and was easily able to wait up to 30 minutes without issue. I laid my tile in sections using quick dry Mapei cement in about 50-75 sq ft sections at a time, and then let it dry for an hour or so, then applied the grout while my wife came up behind me wiping it off and it went without a hitch. It was so easy with a helper and patience. If you are someone who rushes, tiling is likely not for you. So make sure you have a helper like he says and you'll be just fine. No need to be afraid. Just READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM and you won't have a single issue. Anyway, great video and coming from a DYI myself, I can say you'll be just fine using the Ultracolor Plus IF you read and follow the instructions! Don't be afraid.
I was about to use that product to grout my bathroom floor this afternoon and happened upon this video. I think I’m going to exchange it for ‘beginner’ bag. Thanks for the save!
Jeff, I've just grouted all three of my shower bath walls using Mapei Keracolor grout (Cement Grey) and I did a really good job - thanks to watching one of your videos several times over! Many thanks Jeff for all the help & advice you offer on your brilliant DIY channel. Because of you, I have a lovely bathroom & a very happy partner! Keep up the fab work mate. Yours is always THE first TH-cam channel I go to whenever I need DIY advice. All the best from across the pond in England Jeff & good luck - stay safe.
Lucky for me, you got that off your chest! Because tomorrow I was going to grout the tiles for my backsplash and this ultrawhite plus is what Lowes told me to get, and it’s my first time tiling. So I’ll be taking this back because I need a lot of time.I have been able to do a lot of renovations in my home by my self thanks to you. I search your channel for everything I need to know. A big thank you to you!
Ditto here with Judy. Bought white yesterday at Lowes to use tomorrow. And I'm a terrible direction understander.... :) Jeff channels show me everything.
I had already bought the Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA Grout, but because of the superior qualities I decided to keep it and just stay ahead of it while tiling my shower stall, wall by wall. Thanks for the tip, this was extremely helpful.
In my country we have Ultracolor Plus (without the "FA") and it's really easy to work with. Few tips i can give as an amateur that redone all of his apartment by myself and used this - work on small areas like 5 sq./m at a time, don't live big mess when grouting use as much material as needed, when starting cleaning use a sponge that is a little damp you need the water to soften the grout and form your tile gaps properly after that use more dry clean sponge to remove the rest and finally use clean microfiber cloth for perfect finish. You will be done in no time. :)
Jeff is so right here. I was surprised how fluffy and light this new "tech" grout is. I had my doubts, but it really does dry fast and hard. I also had a helper mixing small batches for me as we both worried it would dry fast as we put it down, and boy did it. Great stuff, but don't underestimate it!
Fluffy is right-It's weird as shit to mix, almost like meringue. I used my drill on a slow speed and it didn't set too fast. Getting the consistency right, in small batches, is difficult. Based on my previous experience with other grout products, I thought I had it just right, but then putting it on the wall was like melting ice cream. I guess by the time I'm done with my tub enclosure I'll have the process down 😬
I'm a professional tile setter for 30 years the ultra color grout is a exceptional product its color constancy is very much appreciated by me.its one of the best of the newer grouts that are now available. If your a novice at grouting I would suggest grouting small areas of about 5 to 10 sqft at a time untill to you get the hang of it.its worth taking the time to learn how to use the product to get a result you be happy with for years to come
I'm going to use it, not experienced at tiling but have always worked with my hands, built furniture and I install liners in pools for a living. I will make sure to wipe it down quick enough and as you said work small areas. It really look like a much better product that will hold up long term.
Jeff, Thank you for your video. My first time grouting I used Mapei Ultracolor FA. I followed some basic steps: mix a small amount of grout at a time, do a small section at a time - 12 sq ft., and remove the excess grout within 15 minutes. I did a small section that would be hidden under the sink as a practice run. I did my bathroom floor without any issues, and it came out fantastic. I was in full control of the grouting, because I was easily able to wipe the grout off within the 15 min. time frame. So, I think a first timer can use it, but with great caution. Thanks again!!!
I need to add one more thing for anyone seeing this. If you bought a new home, or had a tile remodel done, don’t take it for granted that the installer used grout sealer (unless you actually witnessed it). Many don’t bother and you won’t find out that they didn’t until your grout ends up looking dirty and is very hard to clean. Many installers use unsealed grout because it’s cheaper and they have longer working time. They often don’t go back to seal it because that’s more time and expense and they know most people won’t think to ask. If you’re not sure if your grout was sealed, you can usually tell because if you get it wet, it’ll look slightly darker than the dry grout and won’t repel water. Take the time and effort to seal it when you’ve just moved in and your grout will stay nice looking for years. I wish I knew this years ago!
There are contractors that care, unfortunately they cost money and take some looking to find. I understand the skepticism but if someone reaches the point of working for free or it costing them money to work on your project it's kind of hard to care after that point. I've been there and it's a defeating feeling. Hope the tile jobs go well :)
My wife and I used the Ultracolor on our sunroom. So glad that we were working on it together. We were barely able to clean the tiles where we first applied it. Fortunately the floor looks great. I based all our techniques on your other video on grouting. Thanks for the great content!
I’m glad I watched this video. I did small sections at a time. I applied the grout and went in with a sponge to clean almost immediately. Turned out great.
I actually just used this grout last week. I waited almost too long, I had to scrub really hard to get it off. I now find 3 foot sections at a time works really well.
Much appreciated. I'm doing a pebble shower floor, about to grout it. I called Mapei after having Keracolor recommended to me by a big box store for the pebble floor. Mapei gave me a few tips. 1) You MUST use Ultracolor FA because the pebbles will have 3/4" gaps to fill. 2) Try it on a small area - like 1 foot square to make sure I know how to use it. 3) Follow the directions EXACTLY. Mapei also emailed me a tips sheet to follow.
He speaks the truth. Experienced tile installer here! One time i did wait too long to wipe. I hated my life that day. I was wiping grout lines with wooden shims. It was horrible
My experience with Ultracolor Plus FA (first timer, working solo): My bathroom project had polished porcelain and also river rock on the walls, so the grout had to cover 1/16 up to 1/2 inch... not much choice but to go for this advanced grout. I grouted a test board first just to know what I was dealing with. With very cold water and moderate ambient temperature (20c), pot life is well over an hour. So plenty of time there. On the polished porcelain with the 1/16" gaps, I just did sections I could complete in 15-20 minutes, after which I washed. When the grout was no longer sticky to the touch I knew I could wash it. No issues and it is easy to work with. As a bonus on polished porcelain the grout won't stick on the surface and cleans easily even when dry. On the river rock portion (I had sealed the river rock before hand), there was a ridiculous amount of time to work. I had to wait over an hour for the grout to firm up enough to wash it! So really it depends on your project and your working conditions. Smaller tile spacing will dry faster than large, and I would expect that a more porous tile would also dry faster. If you're nervous like I was, just do a test board first. Use very cold water (refrigerate if necessary), and pick a cool day for the job. If you're grouting natural stone, seal if first. If you're just mixing 2 or 3 lbs at a time, it's easy enough to mix by hand. Honestly for my particular project the grout was very easy to work with, and I would not hesitate to use it again. I have to wonder if Jeff has personally used Ultracolor Plus FA, or was just basing his non-recommend on a few less than careful DIYers. From Jeff's description this stuff would be near impossible to work with. That's not what I found at all.
The same applies when adding a polymer to grout or even using epoxy grout. You need to get it off QUICK or you’ll spend 5x the time trying to get it off than you did applying. It’s worth using even for beginners IMO - just have your grout stuff and your cleaning stuff ready (5 gallon bucket of warm water, sponge, microfiber towel, scrubby pad) then set a 5-8 minute timer (depending on how warm it is outside, warmer sets quicker) and only mix a small amount at a time (probably enough for a 4’x4’ spot). Once the timer goes off start cleaning it from where you first started, then mix more grout again and repeat. It will probably take 3x as long (a few hours for a shower) but in the end you’ll have a better product!
Thank you, Thank you for your video. I just had this product placed in my cart by the Lowes Associate as it is two in one step grout and sealer. This subway tile kitchen backsplash is my first tile project, so I am going to go back in the morning and get the simple grout for us mortals and DIYers. Thank you for posting this.
Haha!! I learned this the hard way. Fortunately I did not ruin my tile job. I bought the 25 lb bag initially. When I read the instructions, I took it back and exchanged for 10 lb bags. My wife and I had already planned to work as a team... thank goodness. I mixed the 10 lb bag and started putting it in in one section and then moved across the room so she could start washing. By the time I used about 1/2 of the 10 lb bag, it was hardened in the bucket! Needless to day, We finished the job with half bags at a time. It was like a high intensity interval workout. Mix the grout, put it in as quickly as possible, wash quickly, rest for 15 minutes and repeat. It looks great.
My mistake yesterday, spent hours fixing it afterwards. Thank goodness I only did one side of the wall in the bathroom. Definitely test a small section before attempting a full wall. But to get really nice even lines, I would do it in sections and mix only enough just for that area. Then rinse repeat, my recommendation for amateurs like myself. Oh and set a timer before applying to tell you when you should start wiping it down and work quick, the sponge will fill in the details. I would sponge immediately after applying. Major regrets for not testing on small section before attempting a full wall. Had too much confidence in myself. Wish I saw this video before doing the DIY. Best of luck to everyone and thanks for your vids, amazing job at explaining and entertaining.
I recently used Ultracolour Plus FA and I think if done carefully the average DIY'er can be successful with it (I am one). Here are some tips I used, maybe they'll be helpful for someone in the comments here. 1. Absolutely, read the bag, two or three times. And keep the bag handy to reference after you empty it out. 2. Work in small batches. I used 2lb (908g) of grout and 200g of water at a time in a small HD bucket, pre-weighed with a kitchen scale and yogurt tubs. 3. Empty the bag into a 5 gallon bucket, put the lid on, and roll it around for a few mins to mix the powder before taking batches out. 4. Use ice water. The chemical reaction isn't linear, once a certain temperature is reached the grout starts to harden quickly. Using ice water helps keep the temperature in the workable range longer. 4. Hand mix the small batches using a plastic putty knife or paint stir stick. Using a drill mixer with small batches creates excess heat and then it's a race to apply and clean before it starts to set up.
I just finished my kitchen backsplash using this stuff. (ordered tile and grout from the same place and this is what they ordered so i ran with it.) Did exactly the same, 2 lb, small batches, paint stirrer, and a wife to keep swapping out the 2 water buckets during the wipe down. Have the clean water ready before you begin and have her get fresh while you grout the next batch. It would go much faster if i could mix it all at once and just grout, but we work with what we have sometimes.
Thank you!! They sold me ultracolor at the tile store and I was about to do my grout! I’ll return it and get the other one. This saved the tile I worked so hard on!
I just did my first floor job where I needed grout this past weekend. I didn’t watch this video beforehand and I did use the high tech stuff he said not to use. I am a beginner and it worked great! I think the part that made it work was that I watched other videos on how to grout and the best advice I got was to do small areas at a time. Mix small amounts of grout so it’s all used up in one or two sections and for each section, clean it. I only made about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart at a time.
Oh boy!!! How right you are!!! This makes my 4th tile project but first time using the one you said not to. And how correct you are!!! I used the premixed version. I ended up with as much of it on the floor as I did on the shower walls. Grouting was always my favorite part of tiling until this time. I slapped the grouting job on my husband and I was the washer. Yes, do not wait more than 15 minutes to come behind to wash. This product may be great for experts but it is horrible to use for amateurs. Any future tiling projects will be done with an alternative grout.
Just finished my first tile project, a 20sf guest bathroom floor. I used this product and it worked great. BUT I took the warnings here seriously, read the instructions, and watched other videos on it. One said it’s critical to mix slowly. Followed the instructions and tips (including your tip to keep some for later!), and everything turned out great. Absolutely love your content… literally the best out there.
The Mapei ultra colour Plus FA is a great grout. It's supposed to be waterproof, and is rated for pool and outdoor use. It is more demanding to work with (shorter work time, have to keep up with the sponging) but when it's done right, it looks great and performs great. For a tiled shower floor, it's excellent. I don't know if I'd use it for a backsplash but for a shower, it is a great option if you have patience and are focused.
I just did a bathroom and this exact thing happened, it took a acid grout remover to get it off and a lot of scrubbing with a diamond pad, what a nightmare! Wish I woulda saw this a month ago. Kitchen is next and I’ll definitely be more prepared! Thank you for all your videos I’ve learned so much! You have a great philosophy towards projects and tools!
I had the same problem and didnt read that it was fast drying. I worked hard to scrape off the grout while it was drying and keeping it wet. I got most of it off before it set totally but the lines are not even. I think ill have to get some acid remover and work on it more. Lessen learned the hard way.
I found this out the hard way a year ago; I thought I was losing my mind but now I know what the problem was. I have done a few backsplashes and other small jobs without issue, but this job at a friend’s house turned into a nightmare. This was the grout he bought. We didn’t tear out the work (felt like it) but I did wear out a pocketknife scraping over half the joints (subway😭). Fortunately, the wide angle of the tanto blade followed the lines and left just the right amount of grout behind…hours later. And the knife blade is no longer a tanto blade.😂 I love your videos.
I just tiled my bathroom today using Mapei Ultracolor plus fa and I have to say he's 100% correct. Thank God I saw this video before I started so I can get a helper. Thank you so much Jeff! Amazing vids
I'm a beginner. I tried kerapoxy on a warm day! Had to rip off two walls of tile. Bit more research done after that fiasco! Thanks for all your great videos, I watch them all the time before my diy jobs. You're great, keep up the good work 👍 Mike
After grouting the tile using ultracolor, I went off to do something else, then came back after 15 minutes to check and all grout joints were nearly setup! I frantically sponged the tile off and managed to save it. His is advice is wise.
200% Correct, Mr. Jeff, ADDITIONAL INFOS & tips very useful, CORROBORED by Mapei, if I may, to help others Ultracolor U: -Buy sealer(1000ml) to mix with INSTEAD of water. -Mapei do NOT recommand for shower floor Ultracolor Plus FA: -No added value to use sealer -Will NOT scratch glass tile/mosaic -MUCH HARDER to remove off surface of porous tiles if waited too long to clean -Quick humid sponge on tiles just before applying to facilitate application -Cooler room temperature/tiles when installing & use of cold water when mixing = Little bit more time before hardening -Very hard to clean your grout float(tool) if you wait to long to clean Hoping it can be helpfull...english not my 1st language my apologies for the writing mistakes =)
Thanks for the warning. I used this product on a small area with no problem. I will be doing my a very large area and probably would have been stung hard. I have tiled my kitchen, dinning room and hallway and ready to grout. This good have ended in a disaster. Thank you so much.
I used the ultracolor FA in both my bath and laundry space. Its not that bad to work with. That said, pay attention to working times. Get it grouted and get it off. Even the film. Its great grout, worth the hassle. I have no film, chunks, left over anything from the grout. And I learned how to do it from Jeff.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIYJeff I owe you a big thanks. Did my whole basement off your instruction. Framing, electrical, drywall, tape + mud, texture, trim and tile. Everything but carpet. Inspectors all said they thought I hired it out. So your program works, I am proof. Saved a fortune. Cost half if not more than hiring it done. All that equity is now paying for our dream home being built as we speak.
Used Ultracolor grout successfully on a recent tile job, Just read and follow the instructions as you should with any product you are using. I mixed it in small batches, don't mix the whole bag at once, I used a weight scale in order to get the water/powder ratio exact for each batch, start with about 1lbs/500g pf powder and go from there, set a timer, apply as much as you can in 10 mins, if you have any left in the pot after that then toss it and get cleaning.
I used your advice and weighted it up in two pound batches and added 200ml water to it and it came out nice each time. Measuring the grout and water made it a lot easier. Two pounds was really the maximum I could work with doing plank flooring. I would wear a respirator next time I’m mixing it, my sinuses were sure plugged up after, even though I hardly breathed any dust.
I can not thank you enough for this advice. I will be doing flooring on my front porch tomorrow, and those tips will save me lots of trouble. Thank you -Jorge in Florida.
Thank you for this. My local Lowes only had this and so had to go with it. Read all the tech sheet and took note of all the tips. I live in Hawaii, and even with wetting the tile with iced water, mixing with cold water, and sitting pot in ice bath, grout started setting up in 7 minutes! Stopped in my tracks and started cleaning. Then proceeded to the next area and did it all over. Grout coming out really good. I know you recommend against this for first timers like myself, but the thread of tips and advice you started was invaluable. Thanks again!
Jeff! You are the best! I have learned so much from your video's! Anytime I decide to tackle a project, yours are the first videos I watch. I love that you're so real and honest! And you always make me chuckle! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We used ultra color and nearly had some charcoal colored stains on our white tile, but my husband thought to try magic erasers on the spots as we finished our second cleaning and they came right off! Thank you Jeff for all your invaluable information that helped us in our first tile adventure!
@@zanderday4466 i used it my first time doing it no problems. did 240 sq ft then cleaned it. i build patios though and work with poly sand so nothing new to me
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! I'm a diy'er and I was just about to start grouting with that same grout this morning. Thank heavens I've been watching your videos with others and researching every major process before I move to the next step. With that said! I'm gonna go switch this out😅😅😅. Thank you so much for your videos and information.
Instructions, bro. My first question is always, "how does this stuff (typically a profanity or superlative) work?" Like any other tool in the box, it's nice to know how to use it.
Thank you 🙏 so much for that info!!! I've never ever done any tiling etc. before and have done my backsplash in my brand new kitchen. Proud to have the tiles stay on the wall...lol...I waited for a couple of weeks and was ready for the grouting. Had bought exactly the same grouting material, the Ultracolor plus; and lucky me doing a bit more research I came across this video and it saved me! Grouting was a fairly good process and I did not worry at all of having the material stuck on my tiles too fast. For a 1st time doing this kind of work I absolutely recommend the less potent version of this grout material.
Thank you so much for this tip!! First time attempting tile and grouting and I would have bought that one. I used the one you suggested and it worked beautifully. After sponging off a few times I buffed the glass tiles I used with a soft t shirt and they now shine. I actually just finished and have a gorgeous backsplash!!!
Just finished with this product today and it couldn’t have gone easier. Working time was easily within the 15-30 min it says on the bag. Mixed 250 ml to roughly 2 lb 6 oz, ambient temperature in the room 70 degrees. Kitchen backsplash, by myself , worked in 3 batches. Turned out fantastic and found it incredibly easy to use, and I am far from an expert. Maybe if you’re working in 80 plus degree weather it is scarier but I couldn’t see any down side to this product.
Fully agree with your measurements and how easy it was to work with. With 250 ml water to roughly 2 lb 6 oz mix the grout was nice and creamy and easy to work with. I broke our new shower into 3 grout sections. After 30-40 minutes from grout float touching the wall I was able to do the first wipe.polished porcelain tiles and glass the haze easily came off at 30 minutes and 1 hour.
Honestly, this is the best advice of any of the thousands of DIY videos I've watched, and a hard-learned lesson over the years: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PRODUCTS YOU'RE USING!
Thanks, you are a great guy. I have been renovating my rentals for over 40 years however I have very seldom had tile work done. That said, I did a tile job at my own house in the kitchen last week. I left the grout on too long and it was quite a job getting it off. I never knew of the two types of grout. Thanks again, you do a great service to help people out.
I used the more complex stuff on a kitchen backsplash project. It turned out great, but I did have my wife helping me, and I watched a bunch of videos so I knew what to do and when. It was my first time doing tile, and it looks amazing, so it CAN be done.
When I was being trained on tiling, this was the #1 thing I was told... always read the instructions on each bag of grout, because they sometimes change, and if you don't follow the instructions you could lose out big.
Definitely read the bags! Because a bag grout like Power Grout (where they change their formula, seems to be monthly) they can the mixing and remixing times. Do this with mortar as well because both grout and mortar have different mixing times. And the instructions are warrantable!
Amazing! I just used the Ultracolor and I can absolutely confirm he's correct. You really may or may NOT have 15 minutes to make sure you've cleaned the extra grout off the tiles, as this stuff does set up fast.
Well, I was one of those people that used the “better” grout when doing 12”x12” marble tile bath surround. I was so pleased with how the marble turned out. Then I grouted the whole thing. OMG! I couldn’t clean it all off. And the longer I took trying, the harder it got. For me, using a utility knife blade did a reasonably good job of getting off the remainder, but hard to get it off in the corners. I was about to start another tile job so I searched TH-cam to find out what I had done wrong. This video explained it quite clearly. Won’t make that mistake again!!! Thank you!!!
This stuff sets too fast, period. And then if you mistakenly use warm water, or if it is a hot day, or if you use a high speed drill mixer ... you are screwed. This grout sets too fast ... it should be criminal. There should be a massive sign at the store warning everyone to not use this grout unless you are really experienced with it. Again, WARNING DO NOT USE THIS GROUT UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! We learned the hard way.
Not that hard to use if you follow the instructions and do small areas at a time. I mix 1-2 lbs at one time, cold water (3.5 oz/lb), mix by hand for 3-4 min and it comes out to a prefect consistency. Gives me enough time to go back and start cleaning it after 10 min.
Jeff. this video came at just the right time - I've been putting off finishing the grout on my kitchen backsplash, and what do you know - checked the grout I purchased 2 months ago, and it's the UltraColor! Thanks for saving me (again) and for all your great videos!
I love your approach to teaching. Straight-up honest but honestly caring. I can watch your long a$$ videos and thoroughly enjoy them, but these small PSA-type videos are direct and just super as well. Thank you for being the DIY big brother I never had. Cheers!
How's it going fellow people... I have to comment because as a remodeling contractor back when Ultracolor came out I got caught in the OMFG situation as it was dry on the tile over about 3 sq ft in less than 10 mins. It was warm in Denver (dry dry super dry climate) and it took me a good 35 mins of arm cramping, legs shaking, sweat pouring, dehydration scrub fest to get it off my customer's new shower tile. Honestly Ive never been so nervous about a tile situation than that day. Great video I had a good laugh at myself while watching it.
I'm just a girl trying to grout a bathroom floor....no experience here lol...and was just about to use this grout and probably find myself in a OMFG situation of my own. Glad I found this video first! 😊
Ah! When we buy something in my house, first thing we throw away are the instruction book and the warranty list and then we're trying to figure out how to unfuck ourselves, I tried to overcome that, but there is no help so far ha
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I like the channel idea of reading the instructions! Some people are visual Learners others learn best by reading something themselves (like the worded verison) and some people learn best by means of audio. And then hey there's always all of the above lol I know the grout that I'm about to use just has pictures and I'm videoing this whole first time DYI thing which includes reading the instructions allowed but knowing nothing about grouts I'm not sure what they're doing in the pictures so my narration I've been told so far has been quite comical. Accurate but comical. And vulgar I've been told, but only by one person 🤣🤣🤣
I use ultracolor for when we are doing pool tiles. It works great for that application. Especially when the coping is messed up. It’s always a multiple person operation tho. One person setting grout one person floating one person sponging. Usually goes pretty quick. But when it doesn’t it’s a pain to clean.
I just grouted my tub surround with this...I mixed according to the package to a T in a 2 gallon bucket then placed 2 gal bucket in a 5 gal bucket of ice water. It stayed workable for at least 35 min. I did one wall at a time. All by my self. It took less than 15 min to do the small walls and probably 15 to do the big wall.
Tried it for the first time and was very worried after seeing this video. However I found other videos showing how to manage it. Luckily it is cold and damp here in Dec in BC so the grout was in no hurry at all to harden for me. I was careful to mix it gingerly by hand too, no power mixing, upon others' advice. Also it is with large glossy tiles so any that did start to harden was more easily removed than would be the case with a porous or rough tile. Finally Winni the youtube tile guy recommends another trick: take a slightly damp sponge and wipe over the tiles before applying the grout, which greatly slows the hardening of grout on the surface of the tile. Ultimately doing all that I found I had to wait quite a while before cleaning, could apply grout to half the shower before going back to begin sponging clean.
THANKS! I've done a lot of tile over the years, but nothing for about 5. I have to regrout some small spots in my shower, and bought this wondering how it'll work in & set up. You just saved me from a nightmare!
Both are great. For that “extra” grout you just use ice cold water and do it in sections. Don’t mix all of it at once, just whatever you need for the section. More less 5 min and you will probably need to start wiping. Great product.
The problem is that the package firmly instructs you to mix the whole thing up at once. That is what got us in trouble because otherwise we would have mixed small batches.
Small suggestion: You should add this video to your older ones like: Tiles DIY 101. Bonus: No one stated to wipe and let porcelain dry out when you cut it on a water saw otherwise it won't bond full of water.
Against Jeff's warning, I used this grout today, and it was my first time grouting. I only did one wall, and I think that was the key. Following the grouting guide, it turned out looking fantastic. You do need to follow the directions on the ultracolour to the letter. I may have used slightly too much water if anything, as the grout was surprisingly runny. I did hand mix 2.5 lbs of it with just under 300ml of water for a 6ft by 3.5 foot wall. I had a lot left over but planned it that way as this video made me paranoid. It turns out I had the 45 minutes of working time the product promised so I wouldn't necessarily shy away from the ultracolour, just be aware you do need to work quickly with it.
wow. I just used the Ultra-color for a grouting project in Florida. I did fifty 12 x 12 fIoor tiles. I guess I lucked out because it worked out great for me. The weather was cool and humid, and I mixed it kind of thin. It cleaned up perfect. Only at the end did one grout line set up so fast I couldn't wipe it level but it was just a few inches of the grout line.
Jeff - you just saved my bacon. After installing several thousand dollars worth of marble tile I'm finally ready for grout. While I wasn't going to use Ultracolor I had a grout from another manufacturer, DC Industries Color Tech Plus. After seeing this video I double-checked the open time - 15 minutes. WOW, that's not much. Back to the store and get Kerecolor! Thanks for saving my reno project!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY There is a rub. I have Thassos white marble tile. Kerecolor must have some acid in it. It took the shine right off the tile. Everything is a matte finish now. I'm having to hire a stone refinishing guy to polish the marble. I hope it works. BTW the @Mapei people were completely useless. The first guy I talked to on their help line told me to contact the tile manufacturer and denied what I saw could happen. The second guy I talked to, the local contractor rep whom I 've met, also denied this could happen. Basically, @Mapei played dodgeball and wanted to run away from the problem as fast as they could. Lesson Learner - BUYER BEWARE Even if the label says something is safe for your tile Don't believe it. Make a large test before committing it to your project. The vendor will not support you.
TY for this lesson! I’ve been repairing grout in my house lately and thought it was all the same stuff. Now I’m going to look more closely at the bags the tile guys left behind. Thx!
I almost destroyed my shower using that stuff. I used their charcoal colored grout and I couldn't even get it off the surface of the tile, to say nothing about making the grout lines look clean. I made both errors, I had sent the wife and kids out to work in peace, and it was crazy hot that day. I was able to salvage the shower by putting a wire brush in my drill and polishing the tile and each individual grout line. Set me back about two weeks.

@@benbaxter2061 I did a little more research and found Dico Nyalox 2.5 in. Dia. x 1/4 Dia. Crimped Nylon Mandrel Mounted Cup Brush might work. You wanna make sure to get the fine nylon grit (blue cup brush)
This stuff is actually is really easy to use. Mix 2lbs with just over 200 ml (220 ish). Still slowly for a minute or two by hand or with a slow speed drill. Just do about 15 mins at a time. Don’t be afraid honestly
Just used this for the first time and this is honestly really good advice. Make sure to keep mixing as this stuff takes a minute to absorb water and make sure to have water and a sponge ready and dont leave to much on the tile its self use the float to move it into the space between tiles
This needs to be talked about a LOT more to save folks from the extreme hassle and headaches that I endured. We had the entire first floor of a house redone, removing old, dated tile and replacing with lovely updated, fresh looking tile (expensive supplies and labour). The first big mistake was hiring a big box company (I won’t say their name, except that it’s not the one the begins with L, it’s the other one). Trying to think long term, I chose a matching grout that had built-in sealer. The installer claimed he knew how to use it but I can assure you, he DIDN’T! He left it on too long and the beautiful new tiles were covered with a nasty haze and it quite frankly looked awful. I thought I was going to totally flip out when I saw it. Three companies were hired by the big box company to try and remove it to no avail. Finally, after trying so many solvents and methods (huge buffing machines, harsh, toxic chemicals, etc), it was figured out just in time for new tenants to move in. I feel like I lost years of my life trying to get this issue settled and I’d like to help prevent others from going through what I went through. Now that we’re distrusting of companies to do a job that they’re hired to do, my husband and I are going to update our master shower ourselves. That’s what brought me here to watch this video. My husband has done tile work before and he’s really good at it (currently no time for big jobs) but I like the idea of low maintenance bathroom/shower (wet) areas with sealed grout because as most folks know, keeping grout looking good, especially in a shower, can be a major pain in the bum…however, if done right, sealed grout is the way to go. You can seal unsealed grout afterwards, but it is more work as mentioned in this video and you must work quickly. Regardless, if you’re willing to listen to this gentleman’s advice, I still recommend it for less maintenance in the long run. The sealed grout floor in our following home stayed new and clean looking for years (house was sold a few months ago). It just took a quick sweeping and light mopping when needed but never any grout scrubbing. Now we’re in our forever home and about to tackle some more tile projects (not entire floors, thank goodness). If you’re new to DIY, please read and watch everything you can before you begin. Heading advice and gaining knowledge, will help you achieve successful results. Don’t let costly and frustrating mistakes be part of your experience, instead, learn from our mistakes.
I just did a 3 x 3 foot shower floor with the Ultracolor Plus FA 2" x 2" tiles and everything you said was correct. I managed to get it done, but it was a challenge to complete it before it was too dry to work. Definitely more towards the 15 minute curing time than 30 minutes. I'm a DYIer and I got it done, but I think I would have had a slightly better job done if I had had the time to work it a little longer. Thanks for the advice.
Thank god I saw this video.. I am doing a job tomorrow morning and sure enough that's the grout the customer picked out. Thank you so much for making this video. Doing outdoor patio in Phoenix AZ. So pretty much grout six large tiles and then wash them down. Thanks again.
For me, one person equals 4'x4' areas at a time for that tile product. Because working time is much less, wiping happens much more frequently. Estimating the right portion to mix is half the battle. Applying your grout in small dosages until you can familiarize yourself with the product and the task at hand is critical for any beginner DIYers! This is how it can easily be a one-person job. I must say, I especially like using this grout for tile backsplash, no matter the size!
I watched this video before I started grouting my tile and almost crapped myself. I knew this channel had good information so I took the advice seriously but you didn't factor in my wife wanting it finished yesterday. I used the grout anyway just to appease her. Honestly it was a pleasure to work. It was easy to mix and fill almost any size crack. Using a 12oz container I mixed 3 (36oz) of grout to 1 (12oz) of water. By the time the grout was gone it was time to start sponging. Just be careful not to do to much at one time before cleaning and you'll be fine. If you need to set a 10 minute timer do that then start cleaning. If I can do it you can to.
After checking this out, decided to buy premix at Home Depot and it gave me about 20 min of working time, works for what i needed. For the small job at the bottom of the shower. Took me a long time to remove the old grout with the oscillating tool since the water was pooling there for years.
That’s good advice that’s what I do if you don’t wipe it with a towel it can leave a faint haze on some tiles
Ive been tiling 16 years, and this is exactly how I grout shower stalls. Timing works out great. Id rather sponge it a little early than a little late
Good advice. This is great grout but you can only do small areas at a time. I work this grout out of a 2 gallon bucket so I don't mix too much at once. It is nice because it doesn't wash the color out.
Sounds really inefficient.
Damn 😡😡
I have done tiles in the past but didn't realize the difference in the products. BE SURE OF WHAT PRODUCT YOU ARE USING!!
Thanks for all your videos! Keep up the great work.
Use Sulfamec Acid to make grout/mortar removal much easier. This reduces the required "elbow grease" a ton!
This is how i did it
1) Used Cold water when mixing this grout.
Throw them all in there
(Save a small batch of grout in a ziploc bag to use for patches just in case if you can)
10. Take your time. I gave myself the entire day to get it done. No need to rush if you are a diyer. I have to stare at this tile for years to come. Take the day and get it right.
Really good points for anyone reading the comments.
I've been doing Tile and Slate for 40 years. Sounds like you did a GREAT JOB.
Did you grout with 2 people? Did you grout entire floor at once or in sections. Thought I'd give it whirl but trying to cover possible problems. Thx
@Seek Him with all your heart and you will find Him wtf
Jesus ain't gonna be happy if you fuck the grout up
@Seek Him with all your heart and you will find Him will he help me with my grouting...I very much doubt it.
@@81Grimreaper there is a little known passage in Psalms 69:86 "A grouter to DIYers". He was a carpenter and didn't have holey dwellings.
This type of video may be the single most important for us DIYers. The 'you-need-to-know-this-or-you'll-ruin-your-job' kinda video. Love it! Thanks!
So true!!!
How do you like the result?
@@LVCID777 love the results, wish I had trusted the product and instructions more. They know EXACTLY what needs to be done to have it look perfect. I fiddled a bit much and ended up putting in more work than was needed.
As long as you didn’t end up with coloring issues you did good.
Did you add a sealer to it after grouting? I grouted my shower and not sure if I should still seal it?
i love this guys videos, however i did not see this one... and made this mistake... its a disaster im currently working through :(
I actually grouted a large(ish) shower area using this very stuff today.

I’m an experienced DIY guy. Know enough to do most projects, but I always benefit from watching Jeff’s videos.
If your a novice at grouting I would suggest grouting small areas of about 5 to 10 sqft at a time untill to you get the hang of it.its worth taking the time to learn how to use the product to get a result you be happy with for years to come
Does grout have a shelf life? I've heard that thinset has only a year. Is this true?
Can it be used for a pool application?
@@sangueguerriero9538 as was as
I'm going to use it, not experienced at tiling but have always worked with my hands, built furniture and I install liners in pools for a living.
@@Blingdung We have to import foreign labor.
Bleach it, then seal it if it's moldy
@@KoolT you shouldn’t have to use bleach if your grout is sealed well, plus, bleach will eventually degrade the grout and expose you to fumes.
I think I've used every grout sealer that's ever been on the market - feels that way anyhow. My favorite hands down is Aquamix Gold - fwiw
My experience with Ultracolor Plus FA (first timer, working solo):
My bathroom project had polished porcelain and also river rock on the walls, so the grout had to cover 1/16 up to 1/2 inch... not much choice but to go for this advanced grout.
I never thought about using ice water. I always just avoided using hot water. Nice tip. Down here in West Texas heat is always an issue.
Very good tips. I did something similar and liked it a lot
I bought small batch buckets with a marked fill line. I think that might be a good idea to stick to if I ever use this again .
Question for ya…I know it says that a sealer is not required but I just applied this grout in the shower. Would you still use a sealer?
Thanks.
Same happened to me but we did the entire flooring of our home. I’m going crazy over here trying to take this stuff off!!!
I had the same problem and didnt read that it was fast drying. I worked hard to scrape off the grout while it was drying and keeping it wet. I got most of it off before it set totally but the lines are not even. I think ill have to get some acid remover and work on it more. Lessen learned the hard way.
I'm so glad we have you to help us Jeff so we don't do things wrong and have it cost us alot more to fix it.
I like this guy hjonest strait to the point
This kind of video, especially from you, is one of the best of it’s kind! Absolute beautiful example of what I’m coming to TH-cam for
Glad you enjoyed it!
After grouting the tile using ultracolor, I went off to do something else, then came back after 15 minutes to check and all grout joints were nearly setup! I frantically sponged the tile off and managed to save it. His is advice is wise.
200% Correct, Mr. Jeff, ADDITIONAL INFOS & tips very useful,
CORROBORED by Mapei, if I may, to help others
Ultracolor U:
-Buy sealer(1000ml) to mix with INSTEAD of water.
-Mapei do NOT recommand for shower floor
Ultracolor Plus FA:
-No added value to use sealer
-Will NOT scratch glass tile/mosaic
-MUCH HARDER to remove off surface of porous tiles if waited too long to clean
-Quick humid sponge on tiles just before applying to facilitate application
-Cooler room temperature/tiles when installing & use of cold water when mixing = Little bit more time before hardening
-Very hard to clean your grout float(tool) if you wait to long to clean
Hoping it can be helpfull...english not my 1st language my apologies for the writing mistakes =)
Thanks for the warning. I used this product on a small area with no problem. I will be doing my a very large area and probably would have been stung hard. I have tiled my kitchen, dinning room and hallway and ready to grout. This good have ended in a disaster. Thank you so much.
Lifesaver video! Not bold enough for tile just yet. (Also not ready to do the bathroom just yet). Thanks Jeff.
You bet!
You just saved me! Bought the hi-tech stuff and was going to do my bathroom this weekend. SO glad I subscribed!
Glad I could help!
Same here! Whew that wouldve been horrible after spending all the time on the herringbone floor we are doing 😬
I'm inexperienced. I used ultracolor. I did a pretty good job, but the color didn't come out. I would recommend following this guys advice
Thanks for that excellent advice 👍@
About to do it. Excellent advice.
Thank you

I wonder how many people you saved by making this video! You are seriously the best tile DIY on TH-cam, hands down! THANK YOU!!!!
It’s amazing stuff but I was only able to grout half a wall at one time. Your videos helped me so much renovating my bathroom
Great job!
Glad I could help!
I love your approach to teaching. Straight-up honest but honestly caring. I can watch your long a$$ videos and thoroughly enjoy them, but these small PSA-type videos are direct and just super as well. Thank you for being the DIY big brother I never had. Cheers!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank God I saw this video before I started grouting. I almost purchased the fast drying stuff. Dogged a HUGE disaster.
Hahaaa! 3:11, "A lot of you guys out there, I know you're not reading the instructions, so I'll read them for ya!" Never a truer statement said! 😅
could do a channel and just read instructions on it. Cheers!
I do read the instructions but I understand it much better when some read or tells me all the details 😃
My Dad always says "when all else fails, read the instructions"
I will do this! Thank you!
Cheers. good move!
Set me back about two weeks.
way to find a solution. Cheers!
What type of wire brush attachment did you use? I may or may not have gotten myself into a similar situation with my bathroom floor.

Should be able to find something similar at any hardware store.
@@johnsimons3382 yes people want to know!!!
Don’t let costly and frustrating mistakes be part of your experience, instead, learn from our mistakes.
how did u finally remove the grout haze?
Oh you mean Home Despot !😪
@@kylew8479 I wish I could recall what was ultimately successful as I would be happy to share that info.
"one wall at a time" saved my bacon. Thank you Jeff!
“This has so much technology in it, it will blow your mind!” 🤣 I love this quote
