It really does amaze me that she is still here today. Elizabeth's literally lived to see it all and she still has the throne to this day since 1952. Long live the queen
I was just watching The Crown in Netflix and checked yt for a sec and royal stuff came up on recommended vids, so here I am got so hooked that I watched all of 'em.
Lovely footage..The King ruled before my time, but from everything I have learned about him, he was a much beloved, kind ruler & clearly a very handsome man. So tragic that he died so young. 😢👑
Gosh, the king and queen loved their kids so so deep, no wonder Queen Elizabeth is so content in herself, because she was loved beyond words by her parents.
Honestly I think that's why King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward are so messed up. Controversial opinion, but I don't think the Queen liked being a mother and frankly was reported very distant to her children. This is shown in contrast to Princess Margaret (who despite being labelled the royal fuck up) she raised very normal well adjusted kids with even the case of Prince Andrew as well with his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Charles had issues with William and Harry that I wonder if the crown as a whole leads to disaster since the only good monarchs were never assumed to be monarch (Victoria, George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II) were all either distant claims or heir presumptive to the throne.
I feel like King George VI is a really overlooked king, though I am not British. He seems like he was pretty shy, but it makes sense if you know the history (his stammer + his role in succession). Imagine being thrust into the role of King-Emperor of the largest empire in the world AND having to deal with the worst conflict in human history while never even thinking you'd have any other role than being some random royal and really never feeling that comfortable speaking due to a stutter (and the stigma of that at the time, especially for a royal). And it was worse for Britain than WW1, when they were all alone until the US and the Soviets joined in against the Germans, most thought the war over at that point. He must've known if the invasion had succeeded at that point and they couldn't get on a boat or plane to either Canada or America fast enough (let alone if it would be possible to get out in that circumstance) that the Germans would probably have had their family either executed or turned into puppets for their regime, either fate horrible. Though I say that, but it does feel like the best kings and queens of British history were those who thought they'd never rule and were never "groomed" for it. Honestly, the more of the famous ones I think of, the more of them were never expected to rule. Henry the 7th who was a claimant from an obscure line who miraculously thx to his mother, some luck and good skills in combat managed to win the throne, the 8th (whose brother Arthur died unexpectedly), Queen Elizabeth the first, and even George V who was King-Emperor during WW1, who was also very shy, dignified and had very progressive views for the time when it came to the colonies, he was very appalled at how India was treated for example. All of them except for Henry the 8th turned out to be better than those groomed for the rule it seems, one has to wonder if Henry had gotten a son early on if he also would've turned out better.
I watched the Kings Speech and The Crown and learnt so much about King Georg. He was a shy King, but quite fascinating and how he lived with his stammer is inspiring.
Not being an avid royal watcher, I have to wonder; would not Elizabeth be Queen even if her uncle had not abdicated? Since he had no heir, would not the oldest niece/nephew become Queen by default. If not, what would have been done?
@@dj3114 it would have gone to Elizabeth, so long as he didn’t have children it would have passed to George on his death, and then onto Elizabeth. She just would have been coronated later.
@@oaks_are_rising1054 Good to know - but assuming there was no abdication and Elizabeth's father died before her uncle as did occur, would it have gone to her directly since no heir?
@@dj3114 yes, if the current king/queen bares no children, it will go to his next eldest sibling. If they have passed then it will be their children. That’s why Edwards children are furthest from the throne. It’s always the eldest surviving child’s bloodline!

Oh, princess Margaret was so cute and beautiful. And queen Elizabeth too. It is so sad, time passes and takes the youth and life of people no matter who they are or who they were.
Such a gentle soul of a man who was so brave to take on the role as King when his brother stepped aside. He was so well loved by the public and his sudden death was such a shock to the nation.
Just Read the book king George VI his life and rain 1958. It was a great book about a great king who died young at the age of 56. ( 1895-1952.). Long live the king!.
I read that his birthdate was an anniversary of the death of Prince Albert (Victoria's husband, died 14 December 1861). George was his 4th name; he chose to reign as George VI after his brother abdicated.
I saw someone commenting how Monarchy can be alligned with Democracy. As someone living in Belgium, under an Constitutional Monarchy, i'm absolutely convinced that Democracy has to be supported by something like an Monarchy. When all positions with powers are electable, Democracy then shows its true weakness. For example. Hitler came to power thanks to a Republic with full Democracy. In an constitutional Monarchy the people elect an parliament which represent the ideological wish of the people. They form an gouverment which then can pass laws by both the support of the parliament aswell as the Monarch. The Monarch can't propose any new laws and thus have to rely on it's gouvernment. If any party would ever get an overall majority and would demand outrageous laws, the Monarch can deny them in protection of the realm and the people. Our past King, Koning Boudewijn, f.e. rejected to accept a law which would grant people the right to have such a thing as abortion, as he valued the life of an unborn child. But our King was also human and respected the constitution. Therefor he abdicated for 36hours so the elected parliament could vote if abortion should be allowed or not. I pity those who live in an absolute democracy and pray they got ruled by those who mean no harm. But when someone or an party got in office which has an secondary agenda, there is little hope but the strenght of an people to bring down the gouvernment; and as history have shown, this mostly occurs with loads of bloodshed.
A very well written statement in defence of a monarchy. I have always had the greatest of respect for our queen, HM Elisabeth II, but there are those who think that the monarchy should be abolished. You statement supports the retention of our system as it stands.
I remember it very well. I heard it on the steam radio, and went off to school, I was 10. Ten minutes into our first lesson, I decided to speak up, because the teacher said nothing about it. I said--Sir, the King is dead, I heard it on the Radio this morning. So he went and asked some other teacher I guess, came back, and ordered us to recite a prayer, and a minutes silence.
I read he was a kind and gentle man. Not the greatest qualities for a world leader when you have to make tough decisions. It's too bad he did not live to see his country change, and the empire fade away.
It may have been a blessing for him. But you wonder what the empires future would have been had he been on the throne into the early 60's when the empire fell apart. Would he have gone in a different direction than Elizabeth? Yes they're only constitutional monarchs, but they do have influence.
King George VI carried a burden few men in history could do or have done. He was a Great King for his people and country and they were blessed to have him at that time.
People that I knew, who knew him, felt that he did know it was the last time he would see her. Apparently he stood for some time watching the plane, until it was out of sight.
Some people can feel when they are ready to die.my grandma prepared everything that she wants to put in her coffin(pictures, letters)and the dress she wants to wear she told me where she put it after 2 hours she had a stroke and died in 3 days
He seemed to be so down-to-earth (from what I have read on other sources). I feel if he met Princess Diana, he would've liked her as well. They seem similar, the "People's King" and "People's Princess".
I’ve never knew how old my grandma REALLY was until she passed away. Cause she saw so much in her life time. She was 31 when the king George VI has died that it was a shock cause he was young of 56? and she also once told me that the abdication of Edward VIII was the biggest event of her lifetime that it was some story event when she was 15 that she used to talk about it a lot when she was alive. And her oldest memory was when “the talking TV first came in”. Missed you Grandma 1921-2016
Britain's oldest person in 1952, Elizabeth Whitehead, was born in 1844. George V, Edward VIII and George VI were all born and died during her lifetime, and she was 56 at Queen Victoria's death. Let that sink in.
He was truly an affectionate and a beloved king. He should have lived long but for his smoking and subsequent lung cancer. A noble and pleasing king with a sympathetic heart keeps his country in cohesive unity. His grandson still awaits the crown but pray God the grandson may continue to grey with good health and remains a prince with long life. Long live Queen Elizabeth II and her family.
Today, 8th September, we commemorate the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96. She has served 70 of those years on the throne, marking her the longest-ruling monarchy of the UK, having recently celebrated her Platinum Jubilee. #RIPQueenElizabeth2
Remember always this King who led the nation in national prayer in 1940, and the miracle that was granted to deliver over 300,000 British servicemen from the jaws of Nazi agression on the beaches of Dunkirk. A man who walked in the paths of his Lord indeed.
How fortunate for war torn Great Britain and the world Providence watched over the Kingdom replacing a weakling with a man. First British Monarch to stand on American soil, their Majesties were much loved in America, admired, honored and received with much affection.
Francis Moran actually he wasn’t the first British monarch to visit America just the first reigning monarch ad Edward VII visited when he was Prince of Wales
He was a hero to the British people during WW2. We have since learned that his brother, Edward, would have deposed him if Hitler was successful. How abominable!! George VI had great courage in spite of his weak health. Is daughter, Elizabeth, had reigned now for almost 68 years.
Such a horrid way to die. But George took the crown and lead us all through the most turbulent of times, even though he didn't want to take the Kingship initially, he became arguably the most important of our monarchs in the last 150 years or so.
@@jaxonklaus838 He is referring to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (the mother of Queen Elizabeth II as evident by her name and title) who died in 2002.
He had a sense of duty his brother didn't have and had to deal with far worse problems than him. Despite his introverted nature he showed courage in facing down his issue notably over his stammer. He was also an affectionate father. The British landed on their feet when he was Edward's successor.
I'm actually glad Edward VIII abdicated... Not because we got his brother and then his daughter, but because Edward was a Nazi sympathiser and supported Hitler
The British royalty apparently still maintain the tradition of not fessing up to how sick a member is. We didn't hear a peep about Prince Philip in the last month or so of his life.
The royals seem to have a habit of the oldest being buttoned up and straight laced (Prince William and Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, especially) while the second born kind of runs amok (Prince Harry, Princess Margaret). I feel like with Edward VIII and George VI they were born in the wrong order.
I have said this before and I will for all time, being King is what ultimately killed him. He wasn't supposed to be King, that duty was supposed to be his brother David's. He could have still turned it down, it was his adherence to his duty to his country that forced him to accept that position. I both admire and feel sorry for him, this burden was not his to bear, but he bore it with honor and dignity. The Queen Mother was right, her Eldest Son killed his brother. I only hope God gave him the peace, denied and from him by his brother.
A great man who never wanted or expected to be King. When the terrible burden fell on him, he carried it with great courage. Memory eternal!
And he did it during a time of great upheaval and another world war. He must have been quite a man and King.
Let’s not forget he lived a privileged life.

He never would have installed Edward as a puppet king, because even Hitler knew that naive people are potentially dangerous. Edward would have met with an unfortunate "accident" somewhere.

I was born in the winter of 1952 within a month of George VI's death and Elizabeth II's accession to the crown. My entire life has precisely coincided with Queen Elizabeth's reign. It strikes me as poetic coincidence that I have lived 68 years and she has reigned for 68 years. This was a respectful and moving tribute to the late King. I never knew him, but I have lived totally within the reign of his daughter.
A normal monarch would reign for about 20 or so years but the Queen is literally immortal.
You know he didn't want nor did he seek to be King, it was forced on him. My heart goes out to George VI, being King is what killed him.
He accepted his duty as we all must. Though few do
@@perperson199 I agree. That's why even though I am American, I respect and admire him. He never shirked his duty, unlike his brother.
Served his country with honour 🇬🇧❤️
@@oasis4life014 Yes with great honor and conviction of duty, something to aspire to. I'm an American, yet I looked to his example of putting duty to one's country above self.
Indeed.
May His late Majesty rest in peace.
Yes, he may.
I actually believe Vincent Massey murdered George!
His life was an example of responsibility and prudence. Admirable man.
A modest man who was so concerned about his subjects, especially during WW ll. A gentle man and a great king.
On one of his visits during the war a man in the crowd shouted out "Thank God for a good king"
Without hesitation the King shouted back "Thank God for a good people"
I find these old newsreels much more informative on the current events of the day than our 24/7 network news of today. Just straightforward news and facts. No commentary and analysis from "experts". God bless the monarchy!!
Him and Queen Elizabeth did such a great job leading their people through so much. He was a good man, a good father, a good son, and a great King!
King George VI was a great wartime king and an inspiration to the British people. I remember seeing a photo of him in battle dress visiting British troops in a war zone. He was wearing a sidearm. That sent a clear message !

He must be really proud of his daughter Elizabeth II
You do realise the individual is dead?!

A good man and great King. God bless the memory of George VI.
Never wanted to be king but did an admirable job. His daughter always blamed Edward for his death.
Not sure if his daughters did it his wife certainly did
Yes, t Queen Mother always blamed Edward for her husband's early death.
A Very Handsome King. May he rest in peace.
I wonder if he knew it was the last time he’d see his daughter?

who’s here right after prince philip died?

It's crazy to think that if he had lived to the same age as his wife he would've died in 1997 and only then would've Elizabeth II become queen.
