- Farah Pahlavi was the last queen and empress of Iran. For 20 years, she was on the throne and bathed in luxury. But in 1979, after the Iranian revolution, she had to flee the country with her husband and children under the threat of a death sentence. Since then, her life has completely changed. Where is she now? And how does she look 44 years later?

I was teaching English in Iran back in 1978 and was there when the revolution broke out. I was working teaching the Iranian Navy in Rasht and in a small seaside town called Bandar-e Pahlavi The Shah was trying to give an education to naval recruits when they entered service. Iran was a country of two parts; in some ways quite modern and in others very backward. Women dressed in a very Western style, mini-skirts and all. I was very struck by what a good looking race the Iranians were, the women in particular. But at the same time there was a large contingent of more conservative Iranians (mostly devout Muslims) who strongly opposed the westernization of their country. And although there was a lot of wealth, there was also a lot of poverty. The brutal secret police SAVAK were used to suppress dissent, often torturing and killing those they saw as a threat. I was once called into my employers' office and a private conversation I had had in a restaurant with some friends was relayed back to me, and I was warned about speaking about certain things openly. When I was there there was a massive earthquake in a town called Tabas, hundreds of kms away from Rasht. But we experienced the terrifying effects of the earthquake even that far away from the epicentre. My girlfriend (who was also teaching) and I could see the discontent in the people and knew that something bad was coming down the road. We gave in our notice and began changing our Iranian money for Dollars and Swiss Francs. We were finally able to end our contract just as the revolution broke out. When we got to Tehran to get a train out of the country, all hell broke loose. Buildings were on fire and people were running around the streets with firearms, the airports had closed down as had the trains, and even the main bus station wasn't operating. My girlfriend and I took cover in the main train station and a local taxi-driver, who had seen my girlfriend crying, came over and told us to follow him to his taxi. He drove us about twenty miles outside the city to a location in the middle of nowhere where a bus was waiting heading for Turkey. I offered to pay him but he refused to take any money. I bless that man to this day.

my wife used to work for the family of Mahmoud Diba who was the brother of the king. She first began as a nanny and than was promoted as a cook and close confidant of the wife, Layla Diba. On some occasions the queen would stay with the family and upon doing so she and my wife met through her excellent cooking. Furthermore, the queen offered my wife to come work for her, but my wife declined given her devotion to Mrs Diba. Upon the death of Mr Diba on September 1998, just three months after the purchase of our home, I was invited to attend his wake along with my wife at their home and there I met her majesty the queen. A very gracious lady and I had to bow before her because I wasn’t accustom to being in the presence of royalty like my wife was. A memory I will never forget

Forget the money, jewels, etc. every crowned head of state has them, but this woman was forward thinking and a champion for women everywhere. She is a credit to her country and should be revered as a hero, not a villain. God (Allah) bless her.

Thank you for your nice comment except Iranians do not use the word Allah in their language. It is Arabic word and not Persian. Persian language is an Indo-European language and Arabic is hiebru based.
100% agree. Her impact on Iran was a positive one. After she fled, women’s rights went down the toilet. Without her on the throne, women were relegated to dark kitchens and domestic drudgery.

What do you mean by "a free Iran"? The democratic Iran of Mohammed Mosadeqh was overthrown by the US and replaced with the Shah and his US trained brutal SAVAK intelligence service, which turned Iran into a police state.

I am a Pakistani Canadian. I worked briefly in Iran in 1978 during last days of Shah. It was a wealthy nation. I am sad to see the state of the old queen but I wish her and her family well.

In the 80’s we bought the home in Williamstown MA of the home where the former empress of Iran and her family lived while her son
attended Williams College.
She had a wonderful reputation around the town. She was always gracious and kind, and her children as well.
Unfortunately , she lost 2 children to suicide, a son and a daughter. My heart goes out to her. No greater loss than this.
It must haunt their relatives.
I wish her well, and her family.

There was one interesting episode. About a month after a cousin of Reza Pahlavi’s was murdered on a street in Paris.
A woman with a beautiful flowing garment and very expressive perfume came to
my door. One of my beautiful Afghan Hounds was sitting there . ( The name of her breeder’s kennel where she was born was Pahlavi.)
I told the woman that the family had moved.
I have always worried that she may have been sent to my home to see if the Pahlavi family still lived there.
I had been cleaning so my clothing was not fancy, and there was my Afghan Hound in all of her glory.

I was around 11-12 yrs old when my father as diplomat were stationed in Tehran. It was the reign of Shahansah Aryamehr, as I recalled. At young age, me and my family we would tour the city and country and I can visualize that there is NO extreme poverty or sadness or that sort of things. Everybody was happy. I talk to my Iranian friends and they praised highly of the royal family. When we were invited to international football event, where the Shah attended, people all over the stadium cheered him rigorously. That’s when I believed that the people loved the royal family. We went to the holy city of Qom and the Ayatullahs greeted us as royal guests and warm hospitality, even though they knew that we are Sunnis. About the dress code; Iranian women wearing mini skirts walk side by side with one wearing cadar/niqab. I only see harmony. 3 years after we left Iran, revolution erupted. Until today, I don’t understand what is really going on there. I will visit Iran once again, God’s willing, someday to tour this beautiful country.
The Shah only focused on developing the cities but completely ignored the rural areas where the majority of the people lived. You only saw the cities.

@@AlanJosC Im from rural area in southern Iran and was 11 years old during that catastrophe in 1979. We were happy and in progress. The great SHAH gave my family land and by sending health and education corps improved our rural area living standards. We were proud to be an IRANIAN. Now what?
I was flying to Paris from Karachi on Nov 4th, 1978. Our flight made an unscheduled stop in Theran and picked up the queen and her staff on our way to Paris.
This is very tragic but yet a beautiful story. I can't imagine having to leave her country that she obviously loved so much. Its clear she loved her husband very much. Losing your country, your husband, and two of your children had to have been so very hard. She's a very strong woman.
She is a great Lady with a big heart, God bless her.
The wife of a friend of mine was in the employ of the Empress at the time of the revolution.
She was given a signed blank cheque and told to get out as fast as possible.
His wife did not take advantage of it. Taking only what she as owed.
They stole thousands of millions of dollars from Iranian people when they left the country,100 millions of dollars in his name outside Iran.And Iranian peoples was living in poverty. What a shame!😢

11/12/23...I remember the Shaw of Iran as a very handsome + wise leader. And his wife was a beautiful + well educated/well spoken Queen. The Shaw was ill + died as Iran was having political problems.

I’ve been lucky to meet Iranians since 1980 when they fled to America. I guess knowing them for 40 years I may be a rare American. I really don’t think I could say anything negative about any that I have met. It was always so sad to hear them say they could never visit Iran or they would face a quick death. I can’t imagine never seeing my parents or family again. Some parents put their kids on planes after the Shah left.

she was happy but not all else were.i visited Iran in 1971 the poor were very poor and there were biases between religions too like Shia sunni and bhai, so it was not smooth sailing for all. as far as beauty, almost all Iranians are beautiful!

Beautiful story of love and resilience
It may be a story of love, but it's easy to be resilient with lots of money stashed away in the world's banks and she doesn't look as if she is wanting in clothes or jewelry at least. There are stories of life in Iran not being as nice as she wants to remember under the Shah - the celebratory affair held was not the only reason for the uprising - and although I do not condone anything that has happened with Iran since the revolution, I am saying that Iran was not such a great place to be under the Shah either.

He might have been 20 years older, but he was a smart, attractive man. It's so long ago now. Iran seemed to go backwards into the dark ages, especially with their attitudes towards women.

the oldest son went by "mike" owned a barista long before starbucks came and the young boy loved france, shocked when i found out who his parents were, looked like normal everyday people. the family stayed close. they got out with their lives. that was back long ago, she was beautiful.

Born in 1980 , one of the reasons for wishing to time travel is to visit Iran in the 70s. All gone by today
The fact is, this is generally true to any countries, although 90 % of civilians support a 21st century rules or laws and modern society, the other 10 % of dictatorship mindset are capable to ruin the country. What a wonderful 20 years that Iran had to experience. I hope that generations have a balanced mindset, the life between ideology and peaceful religion teachings, not a radical extremism.

Had recognized her, the Shahbanou of Iran, window-shopping at a Bloomingdale’s in the early to mid 80’s. She then lived in Greenwich, CT. Apparently, she now resides in Great Falls, VA.

It’s ironic how they got rid of people they believed made their life worse but it was when they were gone that everything went to the trash. The basically left an empty seat for the criminals. This lady doesn't need her country to survive (another thing is if with all her loses is she happy or not) but it seems that having such a progressive empress could have been beneficial for Iran.
I mean English monarchy is the richest one and yet England’s stability can't even be compared with Iran. Same for basically every country that still has a monarchy (constitutional monarchy not absolutism like in Arabia Saudi Arabia, those are just a bunch of rich people who like the title of a title and absolute power).
All those who got ride of theirs in the last 100 years instead of a fair government have dictators and criminals making the decisions just look at Russia and China.

I worked in Iran in the mid seventies when Shah was in power. The country was doing well and the royalty cared about the people. Iran would have been west friendly super power.

I’m 62 and live in Australia. But the love I’ve my life is a real Persian princess. My wife’s grandmother was an illegitimate daughter of the crown Prince of Iran. The Qasars of Isfahan Iran in the late 1800s. Everyone says Australian women are good but nothing matches the beauty, manners, knowledge of her surroundings and universe. They are wonderful people. She is 55 but their soft Ayrian skin makes her look 30. I don’t believe half the stuff Americans say about the Iranian people. They have more grace and etiquette than any type of western woman

In my opinion it was a western plot to remove the Shah as Iran was getting too powerful for their comfort. They brought the Ayotollah who was being sheltered in Europe to ensure that Iran goes back by a minimum of 50 years. Pity the Iranians. They may not be prosperous but they have lots of religion thanks to the west.
Exactly true; Shah was not a US puppet like they’re trying to image. If he was , he would not have supported Egypt against Israel during 1973 war.
He has his own political ambitions to take a position of Middle East superpower. This role was crafted only for Israel, US wouldn’t to allow someone else to be more powerful than Israel.

I was young when I remember she married the Shah ..about 1959….she was beautiful..(.his first two wives were beauties .but could not give him a son ).....I believe Farah had 4 children ..( two boys)

I just went to the Mosque-Madrassa of Al-Refaei this week in Cairo . The tomb of the Shah surprised me it was there with Iran flag . President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and the Shah were friends. Since his family was exiled he allowed the Shah in this beautiful 🕌 mosque

I lived in Iran during 1969/1971. They ruled their country together. Both trying to bring there country into the western style. The country was starting to thrive. It’s a shame things changed. I saw a lot of changes for the good and bad.
That what their mistake, make people of different culture be western style. The soul of people dont forgive.
I met Farah in Greenwich CT where her son had or still has a house. She was so gentle. So classy.

Thank you for the eye-opening and interesting history of the former empress of Iran, Farrah Pahlavi. We were living in Paris, France, in the fall of 1979 when the Iranian revolution broke out. We would walk past a very large, high fence mansion as our three children did everyday to the American School of Paris bus pickup. There were always guards with rifles all around the high fence. After we left for the U.S., we found out that is where Koemini lived before the revolution which afterwards returned to Iran.
