Elizabeth R took the throne when Stalin and Churchill were still in power, before the launch of Sputnik, before the Polio vaccine and before anyone ever heard of Elvis Presley. That's crazy.
And before a majority of boomers were born and when TV was in its infancy. Also, the very last Civil War vets and ex-slaves were still alive when she became queen.
And she met Marilyn Monroe who was born 1926 same year as Elizabeth
Truman was President, JFK was in Congress, the first Bond NOVEL was not published yet, Clinton, Bush(43), and Trump were five years old, and the Berlin Wall would not be built for ten years.
@@finchborat The Boomers were small children at the time....
@@JessCorey The oldest ones were 6 at the time. That's why I said "a majority of boomers."
Heartbreaking at the end. He was waving goodbye to his daughter and that was the last time he ever saw her. He was an honerable man with strong inner strength and good principles.
At last, they're reunited.
Sad at the end. I cried. That was heartbreaking 💔

The days when people removed their hats out of respect. I'm not a monarchist but there's no denying the emotion of this piece and the adults in the film who'd lived through the dark days of WW2. My mum who was 28 years old in 1952 told me that for days after his death the only music you could hear on the radio was funereal. I suspect for that generation it must've been as if God had died.
They had a moment of respect for each other... Back then right?!
My mother described it as mourning music and said it could drive you crazy. Use to be they showed respect for such people but not anymore. It is as if nothing happened.
Funny you should mention hats. My late mother told me that when she heard the news on the radio, she went out into the farmyard to tell her father. He promptly removed his hat, and that was her only memory of that moment.
speaking of funeral music on the radios, it's happening again with Queen Elizabeth II and her death, only sad music and no adverts
Respect for what? Colonialism, atrocities, treating their subjects as tools and means for their survival? C'mon
Today, he would be so proud of his daughter, the Queen!
Longest reigning British Monarch

Abousltly
so true. Her father's daughter in every respect
he wouldnt be proud of one of his grandsons though
Now Queen Elizabeth II has passed away she will be remembered for being a wonderful woman, who held the uk as an iron fist even after the collapse of the British Empire, the uk were still strong because they had her majesty the Queen alongside them
UK is again the sick man of Europe. so not sure we are 'strong' ...these old colonial ideas are relics that are holding back future generations of Britains.
❤❤❤
In Geelong, Australia, I remember my mother bringing in the morning paper. She unfolded it and leaned back against the door:The King is dead, she said softly.
In the shop windows tributes to the king were on show.
We then had to adjust our National Anthem to God save the Queen.
As a further point of possible interest, Geelong Grammar School once had a certain Dr William McKie as its Director of Music. Nearly 20 years later, the same gentleman conducted the music during the 1953 Coronation Service in his capacity as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey - a task for which he was rewarded by becoming 'Sir' William McKie!
Now God save the King👑
God Save the King yet again
And now we've gone back to God save the King
Well my grandmother would’ve been only 15 or so when HM George VI died, but she did tell me in 1953 I think it was she went and saw the queen when she came to Australia for the royal tour! Her uncle Sir Sydney Fairbairn Rowell was also knighted by HM the then new queen in 1952

Few remember these days that HMQ missed the chance to say goodbye to her father because she was doing her duty and was on a official tour at the time of his unexpected passing .. She ended her reign as she had started it doing her best to serve the British people .
It sure seems like you have the 1st comment! Congratulations 👏🏼. I'm actually surprised to see barely any comments about, to me, this great man. I admire King George VI.
I was curious to learn more about King George VI from his visage on my 1942 half penny! Also my condolences to the Royal Family for the death of Prince Phillip on this sad day.
Pity he was a true lefthanded forced to use right hence his stammer
Wrong on so many levels
King George VI was excatly what the world needed when it needed it. A Sovereign of and by God to go up against Hilter and Nazism and what would become known as the Shoa. I truly beleive if Roosevelt could have persuaded USA to get into the War sooner it would have save millions of humans.

King George VI did not want to be king yet he took up the heavy burden of kingship to serve as God had ordained for him.

More research needs to be done on this subject. History has shown that a complete recovery is possible, yet a large percentage of the population are never cured and many show no interest in even seeking a cure.

king George vi never took the crown he aged from the depressing effect of the top job
That and a lifelong habit of smoking non filtered cigarettes.
Perhaps you mean he never took *to* the crown, because he certainly was present at his coronation on May 12, 1937 (the same date and basically the same program with a couple of cut and pastes as the intended coronation of his elder brother).
P. S., if my assumption about your comment is correct, I disagree. While the responsibilities no doubt weighed upon him, I have no doubt he was glad to play his essential role in the British Empire's prosecution of WWII and, if hypothetically asked, would readily have served again over the same time period and in the same circumstances.
@@paulinbrooklyn I do accept ur assessment, I'm talking from his emotional reaction to the heavy duties of being monarch , I've always seen king George Vi as the suffering servant, wen I said he never took the crown Im using the lessons of duty over freedom , he was by far the best image in world war 2 ,but his loving wife Elizabeth was his strength through the abdication and his eventual ascent to king , many more highly qualified in the history of that time could see his deep sadness at the end of his freedom to the tough role he had to play , and just to add acceptance of your view he surpassed Victoria as the most significant monarch in the 20 th century
