I flew a tbm940 from Chile to Montana last summer. Then from delivery, I picked up the owners SR22 (which I ended up buying) and flew to Alaska, then Vegas, followed by California. It was an awesome 5 days flying! The 940 was a lot of fun to fly. Fast, great climb rate, nimble considering what it actually is. Honestly though, for the price, I think I'd get something im comfortable flying over water instead, like the DA62. Dual engines are both a blessing and a curse.
Yup, that's what I made delivering pizza...but $40,000 is plenty of money to build an entry level flying saucer using the most basic mechanical gravity wave propulsion
All these children in here no nothing about acft construction or even what an A@P license is or what it’s for. Construction on TBM is like a Mercedes compared to Ford Mustang, all the girls think their the same cause they look good on the outside but don’t have a clue to build quality.
The problem I have with all of the TBM models from the 850 on up is 1: They all have an 850SHP engine and 2: The all only seat 6 people. But what they are trying to sell is speed for small groups of people. I think the Pilatus PC-12NG & NGX are the best turbo-props for the money on the market. I totally agree with you Mike that the M600 is the best plane for the buck between it and the TBM. 1 million dollars can buy a lot of fuel for the M600.
Thank you for comparing my favorite two aircraft. I really appreciate how you structured the comparison (categories) and integrated video shots. You have a great channel and I always look forward to your next vblog!
Jealousy and resentment, actually. It's usually some virtue signalling leftist that "feels" you should pay to feed some starving natives somewhere instead of paying for an aircraft.
I wonder how big of a difference is the operation cost? Seems to me that TBM 940 would work great for a charter company, while the Piper M600 is more for personal use type of aircraft.
Nice comparison Mike. Years ago, I looked at the Meridian, which I believe is the same airframe as the M600, and it was a very tight squeeze trying to get into the pilot's seat.
Regarding the TBM, another video mentioned that the blades can rotate to slow the plane or even reverse thrust on the hard. One more reason why many seem to prefer the TBM.
Resale on m600 won’t be good either, very flimsy tincan construction compared to e1000 and TBM aircraft. There will be ADs coming for m600 much sooner than the other planes. M600 turbine overheats on takeoff very easily in hot climates because the “inertial separator” is on all the time, you can’t control it, unlike TBM and e1000.
I flew a Meridian, made me happier with my Mooney. The Piper felt like it wasn’t made well even though the demonstrator had less than 100 hours. Pilot seat in the mooney is also more comfortable. I didn’t have a big need for the extra seats, and most people I know hardly use the extra seats either unless they have a regular trip to a weekend home. I haven’t been in a TBM in long time. I found it a very nice plane. I was too large to get into the seat from the cabin so I would have had to use the door. Looked comfortable though.
I have multiple rich uncles and and never got anywhere near a million dollar gift Maybe you get a gift like that from a parent, but a relative giving a gift like that seems like a "sorry for the molesting" present
This goes to your "Power of Now" Ego video. IF you have the extra million, do you NEED the TBM or is it your ego telling you go get it because it is an ego booster?? GREAT video Mike and well said.
Ego booster? If you drive a Honda Accord versus a Tesla model S plaid, everyone will know the difference and I guess you can relish in that. 99.99% of the public has no idea about planes and couldn't care less which plane you fly. No, it's all about practicality. The TBM 940 is 56 knots faster. If you need the extra speed and have the cash, why not go for it? But it's nothing to do with ego boost. Personally, it's hard justifying spending $1 million more for what you get. You can carry 4 grown adults, weighing 200 lbs each on the M600 and still have 200 lbs for baggage. And let's be honest: who the heck is going more than four hours on a plane without one or more of the passengers needing a bathroom break?
I was thinking the very same thing. I looked up basic numbers like fuel burn (39gph for the M600 versus 55gph for the TBM940), cost per hour, annual costs, hanger costs (if a plane has a very long wing span, it might not fit in a T hangar and will therefore need a bigger, costlier hangar), etc. I think Mike got caught up in sitting in them and forgot to give us basic info!
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 lol I love the phrase you said "Mike got caught up sitting in them and forgot to give us basic info", and I agree, these things like fuel burn and maintenance etc are very important especially for buying an airplane.
Mikey you are not being fair and not playing by objective rules. In choosing your bird you forgot to mention that TBM takes you 260 nm further with 400 lbs additional pounds of luggage.
I would be interested in seeing how much legroom there is with four people in the back. That "great" legroom you were talking about would be cut in half. Let's not forget, the passengers that are facing each other are sharing that space.
Mike I was looking and didn't see, but do you have a video on plane maintenance costs, for hourly, and how to choose a good mechanic to make sure everything is safe and ready to go, and how often they should be looking the airplane over?
Better ingress/egress, payload, range, performance if you have $3.4 millions available, you have the means to get the additional $1.2 mil. For me the only genuine advantage the M600 has is rear seat leg room, which is moot if the TBM gets you to your destination faster. Great comparison as always.
Very much appreciate the comparison. Thank you. Do you know if TBM 940 can land in graveled runways or any rough runways like pc12ngx ? Or does TBM offer any kit for such?
If the payload is 3 passengers or less, don’t need short runway access, the SF50 G2 is far superior in term of cabin, safety (BRS) and price (1.5M less than the TBM), and is far more advanced (fully integrated G3000, FADEC, carbon fiber, engine fire extinguishers) and is only 3..5% slower. The TBM does have more range but I don’t know anybody who likes to sit for 4+ hours without a bathroom stop...
Hmm… if you’re willing to spend that much wouldn’t a Honda or a cirrus jet make better sense, unless you’re looking at the landing distance, but am I wrong in thinking that there aren’t more airports available just because you picked the TBM?
You missed the Pilatus PC-12 NGX.. Cheaper and more room. Might not be as fast, but who cares. Its the journey, not the destination with pilots. That 330 KTS of the TBM is True Air Speed according to the specs of Daher. The TBM is worth every dollar over that of the Piper.
The security section is missing ... The Piper, thanks to the Halo system, is one of the safest aircraft on the planet. It can fly and land at any airport even if the pilot is completely incapacitated .. That is much more important than design or comfort ...

My lemonade stand is saving up for a TBM.
Yea but you could have the best lemonade in the world “served” on the TBM.

I have been in love with the TBM since TBM700. Although I flew the Pipers quite a bit, like the Cherokees, especially the Arrow.
Good video Mike, you have the perfect voice for this type of work. I would have thrown in the Pilatus PC-12 into the mix.

Me: How much how does the TBM cost?
Daher: YES
4.6 million
Wish TBM would add the parachute for added safety. Cirrus, Piper and others are onboard already.
Rather have the Piaggio Avanti 405 Knots cruising speed 466 mph cruising speed
I saw Kurt Russel fly his red TBM into my home airport years ago and I have been a fan of the TBM ever since.
I really enjoyed this video. Your production quality is great. It seems to be improving with age. Love all your content and keep up the great work!
Great planes, the TBM has it beat in many areas, yet the Piper is just a much more beautiful airplane to me
Small correction: 330 knots on the TBM is true air speed, not indicated. 330 indicated at 28000ft would be pretty scary haha
You mean pretty awesome!!!
Hi Mike! I think Epic E1000 would be more suitable to compare with TBM
What are the reasons you would go for a turboprop instead of a Honda Jet our Citation M2 which cost about the same?

Expect 65GPH in the TBM and 45 in the M600.
