    Great review! I just received mine yesterday and shot some video with it today. That ‘detect only’ AF feature is a game changer for me! I LOVE this camera.

    Dan, you're IT man! Amazing footage and great skills. Today I will subscribe to your channel. Truly top stuff Dan! Bravissimo (Superlative for Bravo in Italian). I shoot Nikon Z6ii now, would you recommend the Canon for Video instead?

      Means a lot!!! Appreciate that. If 4k60 is important, that's the biggest benefit to the R6II but you also get 10bit 422 in log which can definitely help. The R6II costs a bit more but it is a better camera overall. The Z6II is still solid though and I like Nikon's flat profile so I wouldn't be in a rush to upgrade. There is a good chance that the stunning video features from the Nikon Z8 will start working their way to a Nikon Z6III sometime soon

    Got the R6 II this week and it's amazing! The high ISOs and shadow recovery is about 1 stop better than my 5D IV and the AF is soooo bang on. Even my adapted Sigma 50mm 1.4 is perfection, and I still can get full H+ high speed FPS shooting with this lens. Wow.
    Another cool thing is that the electronic shutter goes up to 1/16000s... not even the R5 can do this.

    That sequence off the top!!! I like that Canon has implemented the lock button into the switch, I just wish they stayed more consistent. On the C70, C300 Mark III, and all of their cine line of cameras the power switches always go (off, on, lock) so I don't understand why they have it (off, lock, on) for the R6 Mark II. Very minor gripe, great review as always!

    Cool review Dan, very useful... this new model sounds appealing. Now if I may ask: as a junior videographer (for documentary, events, business and some weddings and sports), would you suggest me to buy this camera or the R5C? Is the price difference of the R5C worth it according to you? I want to upgrade from an old Canon EOS 80D APSC DSLR (1K video), and I feel it would be a good time to go mirrorless and Full Frame, do you agree? I don't know much about Panasonic (S5?) or Sony equivalent cameras, would you suggest checking them first? Thx

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! So the R5C is a very video focused camera and to a fault of the photo aspects. I think the R6II would be a better way to go unless you plan on using the R5c completely for video and ideally less run & gun since the battery life isn't good and Canon took away IBIS for example. The Sony FX3 would be a better option if you plan on shooting video almost exclusively otherwise the R6II is an amazing hybrid all around camera

    Two questions in electronic shutter mode:
    1. Does it have a shutter sound and if so can you turn it on and off?
    2. Can you adjust the frame rate on h+, h, l speeds so you don't have to shoot the full 40 fps?
    Please answer. This is a deciding factor to buy for me.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can turn the shutter sound off when shooting in electronic shutter. However, the shutter on the R6II is super quiet so it's one of the few cameras that I rarely even want to use the silent mode
      You can change the frame rate although I'm not sure how the rates change when in E shutter so for example, i don't know what the fps is in normal h. I'll double check when I get the camera back

    Opening video was sick Dan! You’re definitely one that has got the art and the tech down!
    Have had the R6 for about 1.5 years and it’s been great with the exception of overheating on a couple jobs. Latest firmware update, a couple settings to make sure are on, and recording externally on Ninja V, pretty much corrects the overheating in video.
    Now just recently picked up an R5 and on the latest firmware I don’t get any overheating recording internally and externally. Using the R5 as main and R6 for 2nd body.
    Not sure if the R6ii is spec’d enough to upgrade my R6 while the R5 is my main body. I like the Photo/Video switch but it’s in a completely different position than R5 and R6i. I’ve always felt the power switch should always be on the right side so you can operate the entire camera with one hand. I do like the face only video focus option (should add to other cameras via firmware), the uncropped 4k60, and unlimited recording (granted I can get unlimited with Ninja V).
    So looks like the options are:
    • Sell R6i and get R6ii
    • Sell R6i and get a used R5
    • Do nothing

      For photography, if you currently own the R6, then the Mark II is not much of an upgrade. Unless you're a true hybrid shooter - 50/ 50, then yes, sell your current Mark 1 to get the Mark II; I reckon the color sensor from the R5 would complement the R6 II better. Or simply keep the Mark 2 as a back up camera.

I switch between the bodies a lot at this time and the camera straps have often threw my settings around, and also it stops me trying to compensate for when I move around the dance floor - really like keeping the same settings for the whole dance and think compositionally rather than have my mind on micro adjustments to exposure

Now I'm shooting with Panasonic G9 and I'll change the system and my current system will be used for backup camera. My main problem is that I can't decide which camera & system to choose between Sony A7IV & Canon R6 Mark II. 1-st lense which I'll buy with the camera is the 24-70 and then 85mm & 70-200 in the bright future. Do you have any preferences for any of these systems and can you suggest me which one will be better for me per your opinion?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's probably the toughest choice ever hahaha. The downside for Canon is lenses...you are stuck with Canon only which are good but expensive and there are still a few gaps. Biggest disadvantage for Sony is frame rates (6-7fps in full 14bit raw vs 12+ on the Canon) and no full frame 4k60 so deciding is about figuring out which of those are the biggest issues.

    Hi Dan and many thanks for your thoughts on the MKII. My niche is wildlife and I have an R10 and 100 to 500 for obvious reasons, but I also want a 2nd camera and lens for closer up shooting and I'm questioning either another R10 or R6 MKII with a 24 to 105 f/4. Would you suggest the R10 or R6 MKII. I'm thinking the full frame to give me more light for for theses dull days with long months we have here in the UK.
    I also want 3 x C modes rather than 2, weather sealing, IBIS, but I'm going round in circles as I have heart failure and can't carry to much weight around and the R10 is lighter, but not sure if the difference would make that much of an issue for my health, so hopefully you can see why I'm scratching my head a lot on this question. I also want the dual card slots, because although I have 3 x 128GB cards, I also want that double card copying protection, just incase one card fails at some time and WHEN it does, guaranteed it will have my best shots ever on it. It's not oversampled but there is a 2nd crop mode for 1080p that gives more of a crop but a full sensor readout for better quality, but it only works up to 30fps. But whatever sub sampling Canon is doing in 1080p looks surprisingly good

    If Yes, try this technique : we can set the View Assist & False Color to two separate customise buttons & Turn Off View Assist while using False color & turn it on ( View Assit ) after using it ( False Color ).
    We don’t know whether we can set the View Assist to Customise button. ( like to know this too )

      It depends on a lot of specifics. The R6 Mark II is cheaper and actually better in a few ways but it's lower resolution, can't do 8k and 4k120, and the hardware on the R5 is a bit better.

    Great review. The camera is awesome. The only thing Canon needs to improve is dynamic range (especially in video) and silent RF lenses. Sony is ahead in both of these areas. RF lenses are surprisingly noisy when autofocusing. Any on-board mic picks up the constant "ticking", especially in a quiet environment.

    Same frame rate for mechanical shutter (r6) and 40 electronic (r6mk2), would it be possible for the r6 to do the same with firmware update?

  • @mike_pj
    @mike_pj ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video… That opening sequence was amazing work.
    I'm currently shooting on an EOS R and was thinking of upgrading to an R5. I'm mostly a photographer (travel, events, and some sports), but do videography maybe a quarter of the time. Now I'm thinking the R6 Mark II offers a better feature-set for most photographers, even ignoring the price difference. The R5 doesn't have the new hotshoe, limitless 4K HQ video recording, 40 fps electronic frame rate, the pre-recording frames/video option, or in-camera HDR and focus stacking options.
    The R5 does offer 8K and ALL-I recording, but I can't imagine many use those recording modes, and the 6K external recording is a nice option on the R6 Mark II. I suppose the R5 does do 4K 120, which I could see myself using. The 45mp resolution bump seems to be the last major benefit of the R5. But those don't strike me as being worth the extra $1200…
    What are your thoughts if choosing between the two?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly 4k120 on the R5 is super limiting anyway...it can only be used in 422 10bit ALL-I so MASSIVE file sizes, limited recording times, and the files are already slowed down with no audio. The R6II is absolutely the best for the price. I fully expect to see an R5II in the next few months though due to those limitations you mentioned. The new hotshoe will become an issue because the new Flashes that Canon is releasing will not work on the R5

    • @mike_pj
      @mike_pj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@learningcameras Thanks for the reply and for pointing out the drawback of 4K 120 on the current R5. I hope you're right. It does make sense to see an updated R5 sooner rather than later, especially for hardware changes like the flash hot shoe. But it's hard to say since the 5D/R5 line has traditionally had a longer lifespan between updates.

    Great review as always, thanks! Canon always feels like the cool kid who just moved to a new school. Canon has the largest user-base, phenomenal history, manufacturing, and artistic acumen to draw from and yet, they can't figure out an on/off switch, add touch-bars, and then deny users one of the top reasons everyone switches to Sony, 3rd Party glass. The new cool kid is often trying to test the wind to see how things work where he's landed (as a military Brat I resemble these remarks :D)... even if the new kid recognizes the differences, he rarely ever really "gets it" till he's lived there several years. Canon should not have these "new cool kid" issues at this stage in their game. Put the on/off switch where everyone else does, support Tammy, Sammy, Sigma, etc... their kids need to eat also, and get with the full-HDMI picture. That said, great camera! Even though I just purchased an A7iv, Canon is still my favorite user experience overall.
