    Hi! I'm a new subscriber and I've been a T1D since I was 7 years old. I am now 39. I've had TERRIBLE lows with seizures and all that fun stuff. (not). And yes, going vegan completely threw off my insulin ratio as well. This past year, I also got on Dr. Sebi's alkaline methods and BOY did that make a difference! I NEVER felt better in my entire life! I went from taking anywhere from 20-30 units of insulin (per day) to taking maybe 2-3 units if that per day! I even did a 72-hour water fast which I never thought I'd ever be able to do. His methods strengthened my body in ways I never thought could happen. I followed his methods hardcore and it is truly amazing what his teachings do for the body especially ours! Now I maintain an 80% alkaline/20 acidic diet to stay where I need to be health-wise. I just wanted to share that with you in case you haven't tried it yet and are interested in trying it. You look amazing for a T1D! Keep up the good work!

    Since I went vegan my blood sugars have been so great! And my sensitivity has changed too, my insulin is absorbed quicker and I need less of it! I also have a undiagnosed stomach problem where I was in constant pain, constant nausea, and sickness I could only eat a little bit per day, which I've been told its probably gastroperisis caused from my diabetes and honestly since going vegan it's as if it's just gone!

    I tried plant based vegan for a few months and had such high blood sugars consistently throughout it. Stuck with it because I was told it would level out which wasn't true. I would spend days on end over 400 despite the massive increase of insulin I was taking. I lost like 30 pounds and ended up in DKA. I stopped and switched to LCHF Keto where now I am mostly eating green veggies, meat, and eggs. As I have lost weight, I have drastically reduced my insulin and am hovering around 140 sugars. I'm still working on lowering everything further, but I'm doing better than I have done most of my diabetic life. And no, I don't waste my time with organic foods. Lol

      This is what I came here for. Been vegan for years. Just recently became diabetic. I can’t eat all vegan without blood sugars spiking. When I eat balanced meals and back off on carbs as soon as my blood sugars go up, I stay in good glucose control. As soon as I start trying to lower fat or eat more play based proteins (carbs/beans) I have a heck of a problem with high glucose numbers! I don’t get all this plant based stuff! I feel like I have been lied to!

      Lelit I changed my diet, I was having the standard diet with to many bad carbs, some junk food, I contributed to an unhealthy diet. Over ate so much.
      Im type 1. I did quite some research. The levels were roughly above 200. Levels dropped after a strict vegan diet, now I had to be careful dropping too much. As it drops, get hungry, typical of almost any person I think. I did remove aggressive carbs like potatoes, rice, wheat products, these contribute to high blood sugar, and I don’t understand why a medical protocol will allow this for any diabetic. Insulin intake has gone to a lower dosage. Im much more active, and levels are between 70-130. If blood sugar spikes, say 130 and above, I fast, it’s me around 1 -2 hours before it begins to drop. But very rare now that it spikes that high unless I eat half a pizza. Low carb diet helps very well, and observation of oneself is important. I just don’t want to use insulin and depend on it because of other side affects I hear. Let me know if you guys have done any progress, would love to hear.

      dave fieldhouse ketones are produced in the absence of insulin and carbs from dietary fat or stored fat to be used as fuel for the body and brain. Research has shown that low levels of ketones are completely natural and safe. You need to have tight control over your blood sugar levels to avoid ketoacidosis. But if you look it up many doctors with type 1 themselves practice a low carb, high fat keto diet. I’m now experimenting with a higher protein low fat/carb diet and seem to be doing great. Nice flat levels. Google Dr Bernstein’s

    Do you have a reason for wanting to go on a strict vegan diet? If someone wants more normal BG reading a low carb is much easier to maintain better levels. Dr Richard K Bernsteins Diabetes Solution protocol does wonders for people and I recommend it. Just wondering what the purpose was behind your effort. What does your BG readings look like on your CGM? Are you still all over the board on the diet? When eating higher carb diet, its much more difficult to manage BG levels because of error factors in calculating carbs. Not just personal error, but labels can be upto and over 20% off. That can be huge when consuming high carbs. Thus, with a low carb diet, it much easier to manage and your not having to chase extreme highs with a bunch of insulin and then proceed to crash and have to consume carbs.

    You don't have to eat complicated meals. Have a smoothie and some oatmeal, whole grain pasta and vegs, beans and brown rice, some fruit. You can make it as easy as you want. I think you should add beans and whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc. Have things like natural nut butters and tahini if you want to gain weight. Nuts are good for diabetics.

    I am Type 1 and changed my diet 8 years ago No milk bread tea coffee diet coke, so much better. One year ago went keto very low carbs and I mountain bike 5 times a week and dropped my insulin to very low amounts during day injection and cut my night long acting by half. When I cycle I would start at 4.5 mmol which I could never do before on carbs and I cycle for 2.5 hours and bloods average 2.5 to 4.4 to 5.4 and would go back down by themselves to 2.6 3.4 etc so am getting liver dumps of glucose and the lowest was 1.8 but when checked bloods again was up to 3.4 and still no insulin while exercise like I was pre keto. I have modified keto to more towards plant based and lowered protein as was getting liver conversion to sugars and my bloods would rise while exercise. I am still Type 1 but very low amount of insulin needed and my overall over 3 months is 5.4mmol . I have lots off peppers chilli sprouts cauliflower and spices and small amount off chicken and cook one meal a day and fast 16 hrs a day and now find it easy. I am never ill even when I get very wet from sweating or getting rained on and get chills, my skin is very good and if I crash and cut myself I heal very fast. The diabetic diet is poor and I only eat what grows above ground other than a some chicken now much to the upset of the doctors at the diabetic clinic because I am not following the western diet.

      I think the doctor is probably more upset that your blood sugars are going below 4.5, it's incredibly unhealthy for them to get below 4. Speaking as a diabetic myself, you need to keep it between 4-6, regardless of the food you choose to eat.

    • @evo5349
      @evo5349 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going below 4.0 mmol/l is to prove the body is adjusting my blood glucose levels which shouldn't be happening as Type 1 diabetic as today 4.3 today for 20 minutes then liver dump took it back to 5.4mmol/l which a normal person without diabeties does. Normal cyclist bloods go below 4 lots off times which the body adjust all the time but when burning glucose up fast after 20minutes the liver has to covert protein and also amino acids for energy so your wrong unless you eat carbs or the body consumes triglycerides and cholesterol.

    Type I diabetes is also an autoimmune disease. A lot of people with autoimmune diseases have low vitamin D levels. You need to get the level between 60-90 on the lab test. I am curing my autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis with a combination of vitamin D3 and cutting out dairy. I found through testing myself that dairy was causing my body to create TPO antibodies against my thyroid. I had low vitamin D myself. My Hashimoto's Thyroiditis autoimmune attack will be stopped by next month in March 2021. I also have Type II diabetes. I did try a vegan diet for one month in 2017. My A1c went down to 5. I need to do that diet again and stay with it.

    I went vegan, because I almost had cancer in my uterus, because of the hormonal unbalance that eating animals provoque me. I went vegan and my hormones were back in their normal track in a month. I didn't need any surgery to remove the cancerous cysts. When I was an omnivore I couldn't menstruate for 7 months, and after 1 month of being vegan I could finally bleed, and my body healed... Veganism save me from cancer. And I couldn't be more grateful. I'm thriving. I have been vegan for 8 years now, my hair is knee length thanks to all the vitamins a plant based diet offers. I used to have severe acne, and my face completely healed by going vegan 🥺❤️

The guys warning of “Extreme caution” I assume applies to people who don’t know how to be vegan, I don’t like that warning because it makes the greatest diet and way of life sound like a bad thing to do. When in reality being vegan is better for you, the environment and the future of our planet! Don’t fear veganism it isn’t as scary or difficult as this guy makes it out to be! I applaud you for looking outside the standard recommendations for diabetes management. My blood sugar can drop rapidly at times, even though I'm not on meds. (I'm vegan.) I know that for we gals, our hormones DEFINITELY affect blood sugar control, so I'm wondering if male hormone fluctuations are what might have caused your body to behave differently on different days. I caution you to make comments like "becoming vegan is risky for diabetes". It is a most wonderful thing that a plant- based diet improves insulin sensitivity - I now require 30% less insulin on a plant based diet because all the "inflammatory foods" ie red meat, cows milk, etc that worsen insulin sensitivity have been removed and on a plant based diet one is eating healthier antiinflammatory foods and "healthy" fats. The only caution I would give is know your carb before any diet change, monitor blood sugars frequently and make changes according. A plant based diet has a great deal more of fibre, which delays or slows down influx of any glucose from foods, which is a great thing.

    Do you mind describing why you went low fat vegan? I know that cooking with some oil and eating avocados, coconut oil, peanuts (as a snack between meals) and other healthy fats can be good for vegans and also stabilizing glucose levels.

    • @FTFWARRIOR
      @FTFWARRIOR  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course! So I was in a place where I felt desperate to fix my diabetes. I had lost weight, I couldn't stabilize my blood sugars, and upon doing some research I had found that going low fat whole food plant based can actually significantly reduce insulin resistance! Along with those reasons, I own and run a diabetic health coaching company, and I prefer to have hands on experience with the different dietary needs and habits of our clients. I decided to give it a try.. for science! haha. That being said, you are absolutely correct! Healthy fats are an incredible source of stabilization for blood glucose levels - one very important lesson that became concrete once I went low fat vegan. Yes, I decreased my insulin needs by a WHOPPING 70%. Yes, I felt amazing. But no, my blood glucose would not stay stable because of my lack of fat (or in my case a lack of animal protein as well, since my body was used to it). While being vegan was an incredible learning experience, I personally would not recommend going low fat vegan for a type 1 diabetic with similar goals to mine. (Building lean muscle while maintaining healthy and stable blood glucose levels). I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions about the program that we offer, or experience related to diet, diabetes, or fitness! Have a great day!

      Thank you so much for your punctual response! I am so curious about this subject, and may even start my own channel based off of it because I was diagnosed with Type 1 a month ago and was vegan beforehand, and thought that I had to give that up for the rest of my life now that I have such horrible insulin sensitivity, BUT it looks like it is possible, and it is helpful to hear other people experiences. I originally started eating fish and dairy again but it didn't feel good and this past week I went back to whole foods higher fat plant based and felt so much better but definitely saw a drop in sugars becoming more frequent. I am deciding to run an experiment to compare numbers and see the difference in diets for glucose control so I really appreciate your videos, and letting the community know risks of changing diet, etc. Thanks and keep up the good work:)

I have been doing the LFWFPB approach for just over a month, have lost some weight but will give it 3 months and get some bloods done to decide on keeping my approach very strict, which I am doing at the minute. I tried the low carb approach and also lost some weight at the beginning but got it stable by introducing oatmeal into my diet on training days. It didn't suit me as my cholesterol skyrocketed. Hopefully the health vegan way will sort that.. Cheers for the reply and hope the gains and the blood sugars stay steady!

    Any dietary change is difficult in the beginning until you work out some "go to" meals. Be cautious with that alkaline water. There's some MDs saying it's not a good idea cos it dilutes your stomach acidity. I think the science on it is yet to be conducted.

    It would have been much easier if you had eaten more fat in its natural form, like nuts, avocados and olives. Also unrefined carbs added in the form of whole grains and less protein would not only help stabilize your blood sugar, but remove excess acidity so you would get the same effect as the water. Distilled water is best. The olives and similar fats, will actually add healthy brown fat, which will eventually eliminate all need for insulin. Brown fat will keep your blood sugar all on its own without ANY insulin. That cures type 1 and 2 diabetes as long as you stay on the whole plant food diet with 10 to 20% of your calories from oils in food and most of your calories from unrefined carbs. This will also replace lost muscle mass, since whole grains and green vegetables have a very high quality of protein that builds muscle better than animal protein. You then can keep satisfied on 2 meals a day with no snacks. It will also give you more energy. Good exercise is essential to keep you healthy on this kind of health program. Your circulation gets sluggish without it.

      @@cryptohello7666 That's actually not fake. It comes from a reliable source. Also, notice that I emphasized "TOO MUCH." It means when it's over the limit. So, it's not insulin that causes cancer, but TOO MUCH of it. It's the same with every other chemical. For example, bilirubin is quite normal, but when it's too high, then it becomes a problem. The same with estrogen and other chemicals. The issue is "being out of balance." P.S. Also, I extended my original post...

      Excellent questions! Time for full honesty.. The vegan diet made me SUPER gassy. As in, I had to go to a gastroenterologist to see if it was something worse. (Turns out it was just the massive amounts of legumes (beans) and leafy greens and cruciferous veggies that I was consuming). Before I went vegan, I did not have any specific diet I was following other than trying to stay healthy. Now, I am high carb as I am trying to put back on the muscle that I lost while vegan. I am very strict with my macronutrient counting and it enables me to have nearly perfect blood sugars every day, but like everyone else I still have rough days filled with highs or lows that don't make sense. Recently I was able to regain more insulin sensitivity without cutting out fats from my diet, I actually have quite a bit. I hope this helps!

    Always go for yellow, orange or red (red is best) bell peppers, the green means it's not ripe! it's all the same plant in different stages btw!

      I did not, however I am still mostly plant based ( I eat chicken sometimes haha) and my blood sugars are awesome! Different diet work, it just takes a few different strategies to make it work

    I experimented with a 16 week strict vegan trial, dropped 20 lbs and my insulin sensitivity went WAY up. I enjoyed being able to eat fruit again as well. I experienced A LOT of hunger as you mentioned in the video and I did lose some muscle mass as well. Was curious if you stayed vegan or changed it up? I would like to slim down again, but I do like meat and eggs. Need to make some changes, but I don't think I can commit to full-on vegan again.

    I think high Fat, Whole Food, Plant Based would be better for you. Low fat food has been more processed, where full fat is food in it more normal state.
    I really enjoyed your video and I hope to share it with others. Ever try eating the leaves inside the cellery because they are a great food.

      Noooo. Low-fat is a VERY IMPORTANT aspect of the WFPB way of eating, especially for diabetics to reverse their insulin resistance. The only right way to eat is a plant-based diet from whole (minimally processed) foods with 10-15% MAX of fat and 10-15% MAX of protein with the other 70+% from whole, plant carbohydrates.

    Hello, I’m Amanda and it’s awesome to see a T1D going vegan! This is something I want to try and I just had some questions about your journey.
    1. What was your A1C before going vegan? And now that you’ve been vegan?
    2. Do you solely rely on Dexcom? No finger pricks at all? If you still do finger pricks what gcm do you use?
    3. When were you diagnosed?
    4. What insulin did you use prior to starting and do you use now?
    5. What pump did you get and do you like it?
    6. Are your insulin ratios still changing now that you’ve stayed consistent with the vegan diet?
    7. Do you have any recipes you really recommend?
    8. Can you post some blood sugar levels? I’m curious to know what your lows and highs look like. I want to do this without using insulin. Since I am not insulin dependent.
    Thanks for sharing! Super interesting video.
    I’m glad I found your video. I’ve been contemplating going vegan for about a week or two now and I just really haven’t had the slightest idea of where to start. I’ve always been afraid of fruit after learning I was diabetic type 1 but recently found out that type of sugar wasn’t as bad as the processed sugars. So I’ve slowly started incorporating it back into my diet. I was diagnosed July 25th 2018. At first I didn’t use insulin because the dosages I was given often made me crash. I began using natural methods to lower my sugar levels. But I am pregnant again and I’ve gotten back on insulin for the health of my baby. I’m really glad I found your channel and I’m looking forward to your response.

      Happy to answer! My A1C didn't change since it was already great, I use dexcom only now, I was diagnosed december 23, 2019, I use humalog in my tandem insulin pump (I love it), I'm no longer vegan (but largely plant based), my levels are completely consistent and predictable (I coach on this at ftfwarrior.com), and I'd say experiment with different recipes, but always lean more towards organic and whole food plant based. Hope this helps!

      How are you type 1 and not insulin dependent? Are you in a prolonged honeymoon phase? Im really curious. I've been in a honeymoon phase over a year and hopped to get off of insulin at least for a while but only got down to 6 units of long acting a day

    • @modernmotherly2375
      @modernmotherly2375 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tarleda Manley yes! I’m in the honeymoon phase. I really watch what I eat along with diet and exercise. I really didn’t inject unless it went up to 200.
      Now that I’m pregnant however I am on insulin. Very minimal, endo wants me to use 5 basal day and night and 5 bolus before meals.
      I find that to be way too much so it’s somewhere between 3 basal and 2-5 units bolus before meals. I crash a lot so that’s why I stopped using insulin when I wasn’t pregnant due to the fact that my body still makes it. I don’t want to use insulin if my body is already doing that job for me.. even if it’s not 100% functional. So diet has really helped me.

    • @tarledamanley2832
      @tarledamanley2832 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@modernmotherly2375 I would talk tpo your endo about only taking your short acting by counting carbs so he can find you the proper ratio to prevent crashing then it will be easier to know when you need to adjust your long acting. I HATE the low crashes they take all my energy and just suck so I understand not wanting to take the insulin but the insulin can actually help you stay in the honeymoon phase longer because your pancreas isn't so overworked so it will keep going but proper dosing is key no one wants to stay up at night trying to make sure they don't crash in their sleep lol

    • @tarledamanley2832
      @tarledamanley2832 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does sound like what your doing personally is working really well for you I'm def gonna try a more plant based diet I was a pescatarian before I got diagnosed but have had to eat WAYYY more carbs to counter lows but now that I finally have proper insulin ratios I want to try to get off insulin entirely again

    It may have been easier if you would have included nuts and seeds in your diet, as well as starches and some grains. Nuts and seeds are especially good for making it so you aren't so hungry all the time.

    hi. thanks for a great video and a great channel. my daughter is a new T1 diabetic and we are considering trying a vegan diet. i was just wondering- is the low fat part necessary to stabilize blood sugars and change you carb- insulin relationship? or is the low fat part just important for weight loss? because the vegan diet is a big change already, and it seems like the low fat will make it even more difficult. i am just wondering how bad it is to eat vegan whole foods that aren't processed, with moderate fats, instead of low fats. thanks in advance!

    • @FTFWARRIOR
      @FTFWARRIOR  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! The low fat part was meant to increase insulin sensitivity (take less insulin for the same amount of foods). If you keep a relatively consistent macronutrient profile (something we coach on) then you can keep relatively stable blood sugars. In other words, it is ok to have some healthy fats in your diets. Hope this helps!

    Awesome video and thank you for sharing. My 11 year old son has had type 1 for 5 years and we switched over to a vegan diet over 3 years ago. His BG is on spot when he eats Whole Food Plant Based😀 but when he eats vegan junk food, his BG is no good😩 plant based is the way to go.

    beer and potatochips are vegan but have massive amount of carbs. If you want to really affect your insulin sensitivity you should not do weight lifting, do long distance running and cycling. Bulking up will only make you hungrier and thus you'll be using more insulin.

    Why I only see vegetables and fruits on your WFPBD? Where are all the starchy foods? I mean oats, brown rice, quinoa, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, peas and lentils? They are very low fat and very healthy too. Especially legumes (beans, peas and lentils) very good for diabetics. Science show they help to stabilise blood sugar levels.
