I have been following research on T1 since my first child developed T1 in 1993. Since then, I had two other children develop T1 and then I got it when I was 59. I remain hopeful for my children that they will experience a cure in their lifetime. I also agree with one of the other commenters that we T1 people need to enjoy the life we have now too. It is hard work but resistance is futile. My tail is still wagging.
God bless you all I got it at 23 and my uncle's son at my age yet he got it when he was less than 1 year old and my cousin's son got it too. I did read lots of research on this topic and we get diagnosed with this autoimmune disease. It is genetic and there are some environmental triggers that cause it to occur, even parents' anxiety can be transferred to their kids if parents faced trauma or an accident. The story has more to it yet I cannot mention that in a comment. As you said sir enjoy your life as T1d or paralyzed or healthy nothing deserves to be sad about:)
I got T1 when I was 57. It is believed that people over 30 can only develop T2. If there is a cure for it, it won’t be in our lifetime. I hope this cure is around for your kids.
I got T1D in 2006 at the age of 34 (now I'm 51). In all that time the only way I've found to successfully manage my blood glucose and insulin intake is to be on a keto diet. Even my doctors say "don't do that you need healthy carbs" and to them I say no, you're telling me to eat the food that makes me need more insulin and have out of control BS and feel ill. Until we have a successful cure, like what Prof. de Koning is talking about, I will cut as many carbs as I can to remain healthy and have good diabetes control. To be fair, if I do ever get this cure I will stick to a keto diet forever.
Please make this happen, I’ve struggled with type 1 for over 20 years, I was only 10 when I was diagnosed. I’ll be honest, I still hate living with it, I’ve tried so hard to have better control of it but I never have and I’ve recently started paying the price by losing most of my vision in my left eye. I’m worried about the next few years, it’s taken a toll on my mental health now too, also there’s now 4 people in my family that have type1. I’d give anything to live the rest of my life diabetes free. I hope there’s a cure before my time is up

I was diagnosed 6 years ago given metformin for one year then included Jardiance and a shot a week one year later Doctor said I needed full insulin and my pancreas no longer works. Now I’m on Tandem Pump and age 55. I have always been 125-135 lbs and no one in my family is diabetic. I am very interested in this procedure because diabetes has made me very unhappy with my quality of life. Sleeping, eating and enjoying life as I use to has drastically changed.
Slow progressing type 1, that was my second diagnosis last week from my endocrinologist, after suffering from dka back in late June. Was diagnosed as a type 2 back in 2017. Insulin therapy is a whole different ballgame.
Restrict carbs to no more than 6grms for breakfast and 12grms for every other meal. This eliminates the need for fast acting insulin. Slow release should still be taken. This regime works very well for my son of 16 with type 1. Every now and then he can have a treat measured with a dose of insulin. Not quite Keto but close.
Thanks for the information, several years ago the U of M did this to 100 patients. Would like to find the follow up results on that group. My daughter just “celebrated” 20 years with this bummer of a disease. Yes, people can live with it but the constant reminder is very depressing for the patients. We keep praying and donating towards a cure🙏

Except the immune system already killed the beta cells once.. Until they figure out how to fix the immune system... Replacing the islet cells won't cure this disease
While I commend the work on stem cells (my 2 children fight type 1), I'd suggest we also need to undertake a retraining of the immune system (opposite of immunotherapy used to treat cancer) to remove the need for immunosuppression drugs. We can't move from one drug dependency (insulin) to another (immunosuppression).

I've had no symptoms of any disease/bad eyesight and nothing bad show up in blood tests, but I'm scared that my past terrible management lowered my life span and quality of life. It's really hard dealing with this disease and i dont think a cure will be here any time soon so im trying my best to control it. If i keep managing my blood sugar well will i be able to avoid complications and have a normal life? Thank you :)
@@cindysvibes9895 Hi Cindy! Always a pleasure to meet another type 1 🎉!! If you live in the future, you are anxious, if you live in the past you are depressed, if you stay present, you are at peace. There has been far worse control than you, or I, have been through (check out the book: “Breakthrough: Elizabeth Hughes, the Discovery of Insulin, and the Making of a Medical Miracle”. Elizabeth didn’t even have insulin available to her for 3 years, because exogenous insulin wasn’t derived yet, and she lived a fantastic life!). If you feel yourself trying to predict the future, get some tools to come back to the present. When I find myself worrying about my kidneys shutting down again (they got damaged when I was 14 years old, and not diabetic related when they shut down for 3 months) I will feel my surroundings; I will feel what my chair I am sitting on feels like with my hands, I will notice how my toes feel, I will feel my pillow against my cheeks, and if it gets really bad, ill grab an ice cube and just meditate with it, trying to hold it for as long as I can. I also pray, a lot. I will pray for you as well, my young friend. I’ll leave you with this question though, who is going to have the best quality of life of these four scenarios(rate them in order from best to worst): 1)The person that worries all day they will develop diabetic complications, and do develop them. 2)The Person that sees the future as one with a cure, hope, and delight, and develops complications, 3)The Person that sees the future as one with a cure, hope, and delight, and gets the cure. 4)The person that is happy and grateful to be alive right now; the person that is on a walk, listening to the birds chirp, or a loud jet plane, or feeling the cold, fluffy, carpet, with a layer of warmth trapped between their socks and the ground.
I am still waiting for Dr. Eelco de Koning to give me a call, which he was supposed to do two years ago, to participate in his research. The reason I never got the call was probably because I don't use insulin and companies paying for the research don't like that (nor do my doctors).
Watching a loved one to deal with TD 1 every day 24/7 with no breaks is heartbreaking. A person with TD1 takes the challenges of dealing with the disease on , because the alternative is dying. I would love to believe this caring doctor but I think that treatment of TD 1 is a billion dollar business a year and pharmaceutical companies will not allow a cure!!!

How are these stem cells preserved? I have low islet, but my body does not attack my islets. I do need insulin though. I had a stone in my bile duct and the acids went to my pancreas. So I have low islets. Seems this could be good.

My liver is good now since it’s been over 13 years ago but my pancreas is about 40 % of what it was. Funny at the time I was still not diabetic until 2 years afterwards. My doctor says I still produce some insulin but not enough to control my sugars.
I have diabetes type MODY, which is a hereditary form of diabetes. My DNA has a mutation that makes it harder for islet cells to respond to high glucose. My hope is that one day, this mutation can be repaired with crispr-cas9. This is much easier with stem cells in a test tube. If these repaired cells can be turned into islet cells, multiplied, and placed back, I would effectively be cured. The positive point is that my diabetes is not an auto-immune disorder so I don't need to suppress my immune system if the islet cells are made from my own stem cells.
Sweet does not cut it. There is no word for how beautiful that day will be. I have been type one for 45 years. I am now 50 and I’ve been hearing that the cure is five years away since I was five years old. Let’s hope it’s under five years now. The day I don’t have to count. I know I'll never have the chance to benefit from this treatment, but perhaps my son might. Of course, it would not reverse my retinopathy or improve my 30% kidney function.
I’m 33 and have retinopathy, recently had 2 eye surgeries in hope of gaining some vision but unfortunately I gained very little, I’m about 70% blind in my left eye now, I’m so worried about losing vision in my right eye, thankfully it’s healthy for now, but the vision loss in my left have affected me in so many ways, it’s very frustrating. I’d give anything to have my vision back.

The human trial documentary, shame the cells wasnt ready for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Id be surprised if it can keep blood sugar below 6.5, 117 at all times
it was a great documentary, but i was disappointed that Brian Shelton was mentioned in it. Those cells that he got, first in human islet's developed from stem cells, worked with a 50% load. How are these stem cells preserved? I have low islet, but my body does not attack my islets. I do need insulin though. I had a stone in my bile duct and the acids went to my pancreas. So I have low islets. Seems this could be good.

@@abdullahalzaben8200 I don’t know if the question about low insulin is for my personal health. But as for me, when the stone blocked my bile duct, the acids went to my pancreas, and liver. My liver is good now since it’s been over 13 years ago but my pancreas is about 40 % of what it was. Funny at the time I was still not diabetic until 2 years afterwards. My doctor says I still produce some insulin but not enough to control my sugars.
I have diabetes type MODY, which is a hereditary form of diabetes. My DNA has a mutation that makes it harder for islet cells to respond to high glucose.
My hope is that one day, this mutation can be repaired with crispr-cas9. This is much easier with stem cells in a test tube. If these repaired cells can be turned into islet cells, multiplied, and placed back, I would effectively be cured. The positive point is that my diabetes is not an auto-immune disorder so I don't need to suppress my immune system if the islet cells are made from my own stem cells.
Sweet indeed. My daughter may be able to enjoy a somewhat normal quality of life. It's a tough world even for those without T1D.

I am now 50 and I’ve been hearing that the cure is five years away since I was five years old. Let’s hope it’s under five years now. The day I don’t have to count. No.. Is the short answer.. It's not the beta cells that's the problem.. It's the immune system that kills it.. Your own or an implant... They have to fix the immune system.. Then replace the beta cells
But using Islet sells from a donor means a person will have to put on immune suppression drugs which carries its own risks

I’m 33 and have retinopathy, recently had 2 eye surgeries in hope of gaining some vision but unfortunately I gained very little, I’m about 70% blind in my left eye now, I’m so worried about losing vision in my right eye, thankfully it’s healthy for now, but the vision loss in my left have affected me in so many ways, it’s very frustrating. I’d give anything to have my vision back.

The human trial documentary, shame the cells wasnt ready for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Id be surprised if it can keep blood sugar below 6.5, 117 at all times
it was a great documentary, but i was disappointed that Brian Shelton was mentioned in it. Those cells that he got, first in human islet's developed from stem cells, worked with a 50% load. Also the company that made those stem cells, Vertex, bought Viacyte, the company followed in this documentary. I am close to 117 all the time. -Brian, type 1 diabetic for 47 years and counting.
