On my 3rd R1. Every sport bike lover should own one. So refined, so good. But you do need to have a place where you can ride on the side of the tire and get a way with 100+ MPH, or it won't be much fun to own. Had a few MT10s too. Not going to lie, I find the current XSR900 funner to ride than the Euro 5 neutered MT10. The previous gen MT was wicked though.

@@pnw_r6definitely one of the factors but the age of the bike matters as well. Im 33 and insurance on a new litre bike with R or RR in the name is still a bit much to chew. I think it was around $3500 a year when i was looking at a 2022 zx10r. But for a 2010 R1 was only about $1100.

Insurance companies aren't stupid. They know there's a huge difference between riders who want an R1 and those who buy something nearly as fast but doesn't look as fast (ie MT10, GSXS1000, ZX1000, CB1000, etc...). The R1's are crazy high while the later bikes are surprisingly low.

I searched the country for an entire year to find my 2001 Champions Edition. Fully adjustable Ohlins front and rear, carbs, and an unapologetic nature! With an alleged 42 examples sold in America, I was lucky to find 1 at all, let alone with only 27k miles on it. I have owned it for a year, and the feeling is primal. No, an R1 is not beginner friendly. Then again, most liter bikes aren't. The simple formula for survival is skill level + horsepower = margin for error.

Just get an MT 10. It’s comfortable, you can write it for long periods of time, and it has the same engine.
