It seems way cheaper to switch balls than switch hoops. When i played in HS (not bragging, just the freshmen team), our gym and many others could only be set for 10ft.
Yeah, and if they would have just changed the rim overnight without there ever being a major discussion about it, nobody would even really notice the rim was lower.
@@GoofRebelMusic They're supported by the NBA, they can definitely get a 9 foot hoop. Of course probably a little trickier when we're talking about high school gyms since some schools might be really poor, but it's really not that big a deal to adjust from 10 to 9 feet. But I think if the WNBA were to make the switch, it would carry down to college and high school levels too, most high school gyms have ceiling mounted basketball hoops that can be lowered. The high school level of course would take a little longer for them to get 9 foot hoops, since some schools really struggle with money or they might just be slow to make the switch. Parks would be a little trickier though if it's just your typical park with one court and two cemented basketball hoops. If the switch at the pro level happens then of course it's important for it to happen at every level, because you can't have girls playing one way their whole life in school/university then suddenly entering the WNBA and everybody's playing above the rim
I really don’t understand that logic, we played basketball every summer at different parks. Most of the Rims were different heights and and shooters still shot a high percentage regardless. In fact the the guys that struggled in the 10ft rims shot better on the lower rims. The shorter guys layups even look better.
It's strange that the women's ball is smaller even though girls play with men sized balls all the time in pick up games, with no issue. But the 10 foot rim is a clear disadvantage and they don't want to lower it. I'd just like to see a exhibition game played on a 8'6" rim. Would be fun to watch how the above the rim game would be factored in.
It’s like womens volleyball… they play above the net and it’s exciting. Imagine if the raised the volleyball nets so it’s just dinking over the net and no spikes. This is so obvious.
I wonder if the ladies of the WNBA could make more layups if the rim is closer to them? To be honest, most of the men don't miss layups or dunks because the rim is low enough for them to make them. If the NBA rim was 2 to 4 feet higher it would be a different story.
I wish this video tried to consider thr arguments a bit more. Dont some questions just naturally pop up? I never thought about lowered rims in wnba b4, i just saw Shaq mention it and it had me curious. I do feel like there is a good chance more dunking could make wnba more exciting. But what about before then? Many youth teams in the US play at gyms with hoops that cant be lowered below 10 ft. So i dont get the logistics of how this would work. You would have HS and middle school teams playing on 10 feet one game and then a lower height the next game. I feel like that could create a bunch of players that cant shoot consistently. The other option would be to have women play on 10 ft in grade school, middle school, and HS, probably college, then switch to a lower height once they go pro. Again, seems like this could create inconsistent shooters. I feel like people need to be reminded, funding-wise, basketball gyms arent built for HS womens teams, etc., they are built for mens teams, and women use them. So, if schools dont bother with more expensive, lowerable rims, women wont have access to them. I might as well mention the economic barrier that already seems to be appearing. It seems like wealthier school districts will be more likely to afford sub-10ft adjustable rims. Which means wealthier athletes will be more accostomed with the lower height and have a large shooting advantage. It seems like this might conflict with the ethos of the sport. It would morph from a sport you can play at any park, to one you can only play on fancy rims, or a woman might ruin her jumpshot. These aspects of the issue make fewer tennis sets, lower vball nets, and closer teeboxes seem like unequal comparisons. Those are some immediate thoughts i had watching this video.
Every sport has a handicap: softball fences are much shorter than baseball. Golf shortens the yardage with women's tees, volleyball nets for women are shorter. It just makes sense to do the same for basketball.
*Who wants to wait and see if Candace Parker's next female child will be able to drop step and dunk? Why not test out 9ft rims for 1 season and see what the ratings do? I think more people might watch. If the players want more money, they should be open to it.*
It boils down to pride and sacrifice. At the end of the day they have to want it. I genuinely love and support the @Wnba and it frustrates me that some view this as a negative or controversial thing. This will inherently make womens basketball more popular
The other problem with the WNBA has is the toxic feministic environment where they go out of their way to insult men especially the ones that heavily support them
I've been saying this for a long time. I'm a volleyball player, grew up loving those "women's nets" because they were shorter than the men's net. Women's basketball is a great game on ten foot hoops, but... It is not a very entertaining game to watch. Nine foot hoops would make me want to tune in...
I agree that the rim should be lowered. 100%. The main argument from the women against lowering the rim is that they’ve played with the 10 foot rim all their lives, and they’re shooting is specifically designed for that. But the argument for more exciting play, and hugely increased & hugely increased fanbase cannot be challenged. And increased Fanbase entire salaries for all the players, not just the stars . My main point would be this. Every player would be playing with the new lower height. So possibly the total scores of games might be less for a period of time but but seriously, who among the fan base really cares about total game scores? No one. Everyone in the league would be adjusting to the new height, so no one would have an advantage at all. I follow Tennis rabidly and have since the 1970s. Should we require women to play five sets? The idea is patently ridiculous. Playing at incredible skill levels, it is absolutely obvious that playing best of five sets would be inherently dangerous for women. The top women, including Serena Williams in her prime, were & are close to hitting the wall at three sets. These are not weak women. They are athletic monsters. Let’s do the same for the WNBA, and watch viewership, double and triple.
lowering the rim would be redundant. 😹The league’s only been a thing for 25 years. You mentioned how over time, women would become acclimated to the 9ft of the rim, as if it isn’t the same for a 10ft rim. Evolution is inevitable and people will get better as time passes thats a fact. Most people still wont tune in because of some gimmick
there are plenty of girls who can dunk, but most aren't in the WNBA yet. It was never a priority but because people keep requesting to lower the rim, many youths and training to dunk while hoping to make the WNBA in the future
I have my doubts with what would happen with a lower rim. It's not like WNBA players will be throwing down crazy 360 windmill dunks on 9ft. Because that's about air time, not reach. There will be more dunks, but not super fancy dunks. And Breanna Stewart wasn't completely wrong... An ankle breaker or clutch shot is way more hype than a basic two handed slam (unless it's a a poster) 🤷♀️ The commentators and social media pages of the WNBA should hype up things that are actually hype.. not rim grazer dunks. Like, Taurasi's recent 37 point game. Or an ankle breaker, good pass etc.
Ummm.... So you're okay with the WNBA eventually going BANKRUPT 🤔? Because incase you didn't get the memo, the WNBA operates in the RED never in the BLACK. Which means the WNBA loses money 💰.... Every year since its inception
Imagine if the NBA was only ankle breakers and jump shots… The NBA banned dunking at one point and popularity dropped significantly. People like watching dunks and ally-oops. Considering the WNBA loses money each year, clearly it’s lacking in entertainment value. Why not try to make the game as entertaining as possible? Also, if the rim was 9ft women could implement dunk packages, not just rim grazers.
I think you'd see some power jams that would look good. Similar to women's volleyball. Yeah, you not going to see 360's or between the legs, but these women would definitely be able to attack the rim with the lower height.
If the women in the WNBA think they are not good enough players to spot the height difference in order to make their shots, I feel sorry for them. It's science, 98% of women have a shorter reach & jump range. They've got to be suffering from low self-esteem. I've seen these women play, & in a very short time, they'd be Killin it. Better than ever! Like Nike says, Just Do It!🏀
I've been a huge believer in lower baskets not just in wnba but in all levels of womens basketball. But also in boys hoops until the reach about the age of 10-12 so they can shoot with correct form instead of shooting from the hip because they can't reach the basket. But as for the women, it's not just for dunking but their all around play would be better. They are not as tall as the men and their vertical isn't as high so they are actually playing on a higher basket. And I might add men play in 9' rec leagues all over the country and they love it. I think the women would too.
Breanna Stewart's answer to McGrady's question is the reason why the WNBA will never be more than it is. Most of the players think that everything they're currently doing is fine and they don't need to change anything. They think that it's the fans who need to change, that we're too racist, misogynistic, and homophobic to watch their product. There's an old saying, that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results". The WNBA occupies a very small niche of fans who enjoy watching a slow, below-the-rim game. Personally, I'd just as soon watch a group of kindergarteners play soccer as watch a WNBA game.
I started watching WNBA because these women are better than me and they are the best in the world. Maybe if the NBA would handle it it's going to be better.
@@oriculomaximocalderon3378 "the best in the world". I assume you mean the best female players in the world, which is a fact not in evidence. Of course, "best female basketball player" is a lot like "world's tallest dwarf".
At 5'11" a woman, in theory, should be able to dunk. So, at 6' 9" why does B. Griner seem to miss more dunks than she makes? At her height she should be a holy terror to every team! They should be making special plays in an attempt to neutralize Griner. But she seems to have gotten more press from being lock up than being a monster on the court!
Not only am I an advocate for lowering the rim to nine feet in the wnba but all of women's basketball, high school and college. But not just female hoops . Not just so they could dunk but it would help there over all game, layups and rebounding. I believe the rim should be lower for boys up to 10 years old so they will develope proper shooting techniques. There are 9 ft. Rim leagues around the country that men play in and they absolutely love it. These women's ego's are outta hand. The league should just do it anyway. Also. It won't throw of their shooting as much as they want us to think.
Lowering the rim would make even a further joke of the league. There is more to basketball than dunks. People aren't tuning out because they can't dunk. If they want to improve the league they should reduce the number of teams to concentrate the talent on fewer teams.

@@MelindaHughes-ig5dy . BS, the NBA never abolished dunks, just amateurs. viewership was low during the 60s and 70s, because the NBA had very limited TV coverage, and the ABA practically had none. Check your facts.
What if a female hooper doesn’t have a basketball hoop at home? Any local park or gym doesn’t have adjustable heights. This makes the game completely inaccessible to a massive portion of the population. Are women just expected to play on 10 foot hoops in all settings except organized basketball? If women want to run pickup with men they have the play on a hoop height that they only get to play on half the time. Yeah I’m sure that would be great for the game and developing talent…
Coming from. Cousin who wanted me to type this- as a women who has been playing basketball for years now I could easily dunk on a 8.5-9ft rim and would love too but some WNBA players say no so it’s a no I’m really sad about this
It isn't about the fans, It's all about them or they would of lowered the rim by now. In my opinion, they find it humiliating that they aren't as physically strong as men, they desperately want to be seen as equal when they're not.
Ok Ace .. we’ll wait another 20 years for your next child lol … so why don’t they complain about having a smaller ball? F it , throw the whole league away
If you look this year women’s college basketball is extremely watchable. And that’s without lowering the rim. The skill level at the college level is real exciting.

I don’t see why WNBA players complain about adjusting their shooting to a lower rim, as if they aren’t already throwing up bricks, and miss easy lay ups. Swallow your pride, and lower the rims.
At the end of the day it's their choice to make. I can't shake the feeling though that the rim height is not the problem but more that they don't seem to train themselves to jump that high. I think they can jump high enough to dunk in a 10 foot rim the same way female Olympic gymnasts can jump really high. Sure gymnastics it's not the same since you have jump with a basketball but think of the alley hoop. Plus Olympic gymnasts tend to be short. These WNBA players are already tall. These girls just need to train their leg muscles in my opinion.
I disagree. I don’t think lowering the rim so that more women can dunk would have much of an impact. Ten feet is the standard for women’s hoops at every level & adjusting the rim downward is just gonna make things difficult for everyone. Opening the game up by eliminating hand-checking in the early ‘00s had a big effect on the NBA’s (then) sagging attendance.
I didn't even know they played on the same size rims until today, biggest fucking DUH ever. But then people will bitch about not being equal, they already play with a smaller ball because they're literally smaller, give em a lower rim too!
women dunking will not make women's basketball any more interesting. I recall in maybe mid-late 90s, they tried to start a league with 9-1/2 foot rims and the players wearing form-fitting, unitard-style jerseys. That didn't go anywhere either.
They need to lower the rim to 9'6". More than acceptable. It's garbage seeing them try to even shoot layups on regular hight rim. They can't even touch the backboard when they shoot a layup which is something the average high school male player does with ease.
They are professionals they can adjust their shot. I think lowering the rim would improve the game and there is science and biology to back it up. The rim doesn't need to be 10 ft for women same as there shouldn't be urinals in a woman's bathroom. Allow the game to be specialized for their unique gender.
As the infamous male WNBA fan (gotta make a video on that lol 😂)- I have to say that the biggest reason the W isn't bigger currently is a lack of team recognition and tradition..... The NBA has been around since the 50s, you can't replicate that level of lore and historical buildup in just 25 years... Please don't lower the rim, just let it build and grow organically.....
They need to lower the rims by at least a foot or two at the maximum. I get bored with the horrible skill level as well as the jumping ability. It is bad enough with the other negative social/gender elements that you don't find in men's sports.
Nobody is saying women aren't as skilled as someone in the NBA it's just men have physical advantages given to them by birth hence why it's harder for women to have the same physical ability. Lowering the rim would actually gain them some more viewership and actually make it fun to watch
They could lower the rims to 8 feet and you still wouldn't see much Is dunking in a woman's basketball game. Every WNBA team has at least 3 or 4 Women on that can dunk with ease The reason why you don't see much dunking It's because dunking has as much to do with explosiveness as it does with vertical and women basketball players if you ever watched a game aren't very explosive
Don't lower it a foot. Lower it no more than 6 inches, possibly 4 in. You're making dunking easier for the women tall and athletic enough to dunk but even at 9 ft, some of the women are too short and don't have the vertical to ascend the rim enough to throw it down. In Women's ball most guards are anywhere from 5-3 to around 6 ft, with most in the 5-7 to 5-10 range. They won't be dunking. The taller women will dunk more, and some of the athletic guards but don't lower it to 9 ft be a it will alter free throws and 3 pt shots too. Backyard basketball... 9'6" or 9"8"" would make a big difference and it wouldn't look as low as 9 ft... because the same people in favor of lowering it to 9 are going to be the same people who say... "Oh well...only reason they an do that is that had to lower it a damn ft."
When people say lower the WNBA rim, it's basically made under the assumption that people will watch the WNBA if the players dunked more. I don't believe that's a good assumption. But think of it this way. At the lowest levels of organized basketball, girls and boys play on the same courts. This continues all the way through their college years. You're basically telling female athletes to play on a 10' rim for something like 15 years, and then once they become pros they're going to lower the rims? There's a bit of ridiculousness in that model. It would be even more ridiculous if we insisted that every level of basketball go out of their way to lower the rims for little girls because at some point in the development of a tiny minority of athletes, they're going to start playing at 9' instead. So now you're stuck in a scenario that the pros have the miniature court when everyone else plays at a standard one, which comes with its own level of absurdity. Anyway, the women's college game is growing. The problem isn't that WNBA players aren't dunking, it's just that the league can't generate interest in ways the NCAA managed to succeed.
Men's Beach volleyball nets are 7'11 and the women's are 7'4 and it makes all the difference in rhe world just because of pure physics. They need to do something...the WNBA loses on an average 10 million bucks a year. Why not change it up to see if they can turn a profit for once?
Dunking is the red herring here, shooting form would actually get better with 9ft rims because women are also shorter and cannot jump to create the arc. Scoring and pace would also increase the scoring is too low and girls know they can’t just finish with a layup and dunks.
I have watched the skill of players diminishing due to dunking and 3!pointers. Ever kid walks into the gym trying to windmill dunk or shoot 40 foot shoots. So much time bud spent in those wasted activities. Most teams get only a few dunks in a game but shoot 50 plus shots . Not enough time is spent on the fundamentals of dribbling, passing , shooting , footwork , rebounding and good grief playing solid defense. That’s why the game looks so horrible to watch . ( see the all star shame or game this year ) Players ( pro players ) can’t make simple wide open layups , shoot a mid range ( almost illegal today ) , post up and make a simple pass. Get back to fundamentals and that’s why I watch the WNBA and women college ball .
Why do WBA players seem offended by this suggestion? It seems reasonable. It wouldn’t lessen the game, only improve it as it gives them more entertainment value options. If the goal is to make more money, this is how you do it.
*5:04* *Women logic.* _It would be cool if we saw you do a slam dunk every now and then._ WOMAN: "So the only reason we play basketball is to dunk? You only want to see me do slam dunks?" 🤦🏻♂ Slam dunk argument right there, haha.
Seems like their ego is more important. As long as they admit that there is a gender skill gap or gender athleticism gap, as opposed to just plain sexism, then fine.
Without dunks, the WMBA is lame, boring and lacks the excitement of the game and YES that's what we want to see in basketball. Mr. Airness (Michael Jordan) must be laughing at this senseless statement knowing that poster of players dunking on other players are highly valued and remembered.
Pride is a deadly sin. Would rather be a joke forever than win ultumate respect by showing humility. It's depriving young girls of a better basketball future. 9' is the magic height.
W idea they should do this lower it to 9 feet and let women come to the league without having to play so much in college maybe limit it to 2 years instead of the 4 this way younger women come in and they could also do college in the offseason (to get their degrees)

Imagine if the raised the volleyball nets so it’s just dinking over the net and no spikes.
This is so obvious.
They are their own worst enemy ! Make the adjustment ! Make the big money ! Easy
The league should just lower the rim but don't say nothing
I wonder if the ladies of the WNBA could make more layups if the rim is closer to them? To be honest, most of the men don't miss layups or dunks because the rim is low enough for them to make them. If the NBA rim was 2 to 4 feet higher it would be a different story.
Lower the damn rim Sue Bird, yes we want to see women dunking!!!
It's the reason the news game I'd exciting. The men's game without dunking would be exponentially less exciting and profitable
@@mikemccarty3618 at one point dunking in the NBA was actually illegal because it was considered showing off, thank God they got rid of that rule
The other problem with the WNBA has is the toxic feministic environment where they go out of their way to insult men especially the ones that heavily support them
The dunking is a big part of it, but the most popular female sports have sex appeal too.. just reality
Can’t imagine lowering the rims would decrease popularity.
Can’t hurt.
I've been saying this for a long time. I'm a volleyball player, grew up loving those "women's nets" because they were shorter than the men's net. Women's basketball is a great game on ten foot hoops, but... It is not a very entertaining game to watch. Nine foot hoops would make me want to tune in...
It would help so much . WNBA would blow up .
I think the ratings would double almost overnight
Is there an allstar weekend for wnba? If so, do they have a dunk contest?
I'd played at my local park I'd always choose the double rim side just to be able to throw down. Rim 9-9. 😂 i measured it not even 10 foot
3:10 she was triggered AF
The WNBA women are tall enough to dunk! They just need to work on their vertical jump!!
Why doesn’t the wnba just go away ? Would take the world about 6 months to even notice they weren’t playing …….
Bring in dem dunks 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Boyz be dunking 10' goals from grade school. #lower2elevate✈
lowering the rim would be redundant.
Thats true the nba 25 years in didnt have as many dunkers or high flyers like we do now

there are plenty of girls who can dunk, but most aren't in the WNBA yet. It was never a priority but because people keep requesting to lower the rim, many youths and training to dunk while hoping to make the WNBA in the future
Been asking this question for years
I have my doubts with what would happen with a lower rim. It's not like WNBA players will be throwing down crazy 360 windmill dunks on 9ft. Because that's about air time, not reach. There will be more dunks, but not super fancy dunks. And Breanna Stewart wasn't completely wrong... An ankle breaker or clutch shot is way more hype than a basic two handed slam (unless it's a a poster) 🤷♀️
The commentators and social media pages of the WNBA should hype up things that are actually hype.. not rim grazer dunks.
They should just lower to 7 feet so these players can really get it on! Their 35 fans would love it!
Like Nike says, Just Do It!🏀
The WNBA's ball is already smaller. Also, the WNBA court is smaller than the NBA court size. Lowering the rim would be good for the league.
The court is Not smaller, only the 3 point line is FIBA distance. That's the only difference between NBA & WNBA.
@@MelindaHughes-ig5dy The ball is smaller
This sounds really awful to say but I'd rather watch one of my best friends special Olympics basketball tournaments than the WNBA
BS, when dunks were abolished during Wilt the Stilts time, viewership was significantly decreased after putting in back in, Boom! Check your facts. 🏀 🏀 🏀 🏀
Just lower it
Don't ask the women. They'll thank you later. Right now their ego is killing them
Coming from. Cousin who wanted me to type this- as a women who has been playing basketball for years now I could easily dunk on a 8.5-9ft rim and would love too but some WNBA players say no so it’s a no I’m really sad about this
Shorten their shorts. c'mon
Some have complained about a smaller ball.
Just lower the damn basket. If they do that and make the necessary changes in their game, they might even get their own dunking contest.
If you look this year women’s college basketball is extremely watchable. And that’s without lowering the rim. The skill level at the college level is real exciting.
And make the rim the size of hula hoop🤣🤣🤣
Lowering the net isnt going to change the WNBA popularity or profitability. Highschoolers can dunk better than WNBA players and no one really cares; no one is going to care about ladies trying to drunk.
It will also make the game less inclusive and diverse. Presently, no one can dunk effectively so the coaching, team building meta doesn't require optimizing for dunking offense/defense. If dunking becomes a necessary strategy than teams and players will have to change significantly and become more rigid to stay competitive.
Yeah, and high school basketball games are far more entertaining than WNBA games
Not just the wnba but every level of womens basketball, high school, college, fiba, olympics.
Should be. Women are smaller and do not have vertical leap as men.
I totally agree with you brother but the women don't want to hear this!!
WNBA is not exciting enough for people to watch unless they lower the rim and women starts dunking . . .
They need to lower it for fucks sake. They couldn't even finish a simple layup with an halfarsed defense.
women dunking will not make women's basketball any more interesting.
For gods sake. The league needs to just do it and ignore the naysayers. Im trying to see theses chicks jam on each other like the fellahs do.
They are professionals they can adjust their shot. I think lowering the rim would improve the game and there is science and biology to back it up. The rim doesn't need to be 10 ft for women same as there shouldn't be urinals in a woman's bathroom. Allow the game to be specialized for their unique gender.
And is not like they're shooting like Curry, maybe that can also be a fact, that's why air balls are a common part of the WNBA.
At the end of the day the WNBA is sports entertainment and the WNBA isn't that entertaining.
They need to lower the rims by at least a foot or two at the maximum. I get bored with the horrible skill level as well as the jumping ability. It is bad enough with the other negative social/gender elements that you don't find in men's sports.
Lowering the rim might be good, but having a more feminine appearance would help even more ...skirts or at least feminine uniforms would help a bunch.
@Khatim Ahmad What have you been looking ..... none of the NBA women dunk with ease. th-cam.com/video/PcADCthK4xo/w-d-xo.html
Maybe drop it to 8” then
Don't lower it a foot.
Pride always goeth before the fall 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
They should remove the rim completely and just award points for hitting the backboard.
To be honest it wouldn't matter the skill level and excitement just isn't there. no matter what they do the games will still suck
Men's Beach volleyball nets are 7'11 and the women's are 7'4 and it makes all the difference in rhe world just because of pure physics. They need to do something...the WNBA loses on an average 10 million bucks a year. Why not change it up to see if they can turn a profit for once?
Lower the nets to sink height and they can go home and play “kitchen”! 😂
Someone offered free WNBA tickets… everyone at work said..no thanks 😂
It's Pride and natural Entitlement, it's a Woman's Thing, You Wouldn't Understand... just jokes 🤣 respectfully 👀
*5:04* *Women logic.*
_It would be cool if we saw you do a slam dunk every now and then._
WOMAN: "So the only reason we play basketball is to dunk? You only want to see me do slam dunks?" 🤦🏻♂
Slam dunk argument right there, haha.
People say women can't dunk the reason is the rim is too high in the NBA rim is a little bit shorter they need to stop disrespecting ladies
@Christian Stewart I know that too okay you don't need to remind anybody
@Christian Stewart That's not his point dummy
Apparently they think their league was the highest level of basketball LOOOOOL without realising it's the lowest and shittiest league
Wnba already has shorter 3 point line vs nba. Extend that principle to the rim height.
Women will talk themselves out of a great thing, it’s been happening for thousands of years.
If they lower the rim they gonna call Britney griner Juwanna Mann because she's gonna go crazy on dunks
W idea they should do this lower it to 9 feet and let women come to the league without having to play so much in college maybe limit it to 2 years instead of the 4 this way younger women come in and they could also do college in the offseason (to get their degrees)
Yes we all for wnba lowering the rim Thank Shaq
Why don’t the men start the question with the ball is already smaller so why not lower the rim? Good grief.
Their arrogance is their own downfall
It won't make a difference. 10' or 9', it's just a slower game. That won't change.
AT THIS POINT THE RIM NEED TO 8 ft FOR THE LEAGUE TO BE PROFITABLE. WOMEN'S PRIDE WILL ALWAYS HOLD BACK THE LEAGUE !!!
Imagine watching kelsey plum dunk on britney griner......
