  • In this video, i have a BMW that has a hard code and will not clear. The car will not come out of failsafe mode. I drop out the valvebody and ohm out the solenoids to find one shorted. When the valvebody is opened and on the bench, i talk about the rubber dampers in the valvebody, i get a lot of questions on those. Thanks for watching. Gary

    Is it possible that diagnostics could not show faulty solenoid even if it is? I've been to automatic transmission repair service recently, diagnostics did not show anything. And they didn't do much else. But I've seen a video on youtube where one of the most common signs of faulty solenoid is a clunk sound at very low speeds when stopping the vehicle. And I often get that clunk sound when I'm decelerating to a stop sign or traffic light. It's between 2nd and 1st gear. Any thoughts?

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible yes, this is when the solenoid becomes mechanically clogged. So electrically it still ok but mechanically it's not, that may not set a code

    Hi..I have a bmw e90 2005 320d automatic with the zf 6hp19. I serviced the gearbox 12 months ago as it was surging off throttle .so I changed plastic pan/filter..bridge seal...4 tube seals and plug sleeve and reset adaptions.. this cured the surging problem.. I've never had any fault codes on the transmission .. but it occasionally seems to almost not hold a low enough gear when slow speeds 15/20mph and I get a chirping sound from underneath the car.. this sound also happens just before each gear change sounds like a crickets type sound. Also get some slipping intermittently... could this be the solenoids playing up? I'm thinking about replacing all the solenoids.. what do you think?

    I have a 2008 528xi that was giving me transmission malfunction errors(Drive moderately, continued driving possible) after driving for a little while and coming to a hard stop, it wouldn't come out of park once I tried to switch from drive to reverse..I would turn off and turn back on and it was fine until i came to complete/hard stop again. Yesterday, my mechanic and I used a zf kit and replaced all the seals, pan, and trans fluid, as well as the solenoids for good measure while we were in there. After putting it all back together, it seems to be shifting and running much smoother, but now my issue has flipped! instead of not coming out of Park, I cant put it into park! it is driving much better, but when i stop and hit park it gives me a transmission malfunction saying park is unavailable...I've just put it in neutral and pulled the ebrake for now. Any idea what else it could be?? Any insight would be helpful, thanks!

    Hi, you seem to be knowledgeable at this. I am debating whether to replace the mechatronic unit or just the solenoids. Are all of the (accumulator?) pistons supposed to push in and out via spring action? On my ZF6HP19 mechatronic, some pistons don't move at all. Specifically, in my unit, there are 5 pistons with cotter pins on the underside (assuming top side is where one can see the solenoids), 3 of them facing the right, 2 facing the left. The smaller 2 of the 3 facing the right, push in and out with spring action pushing them back out. The third, being the bigger one, with a bigger radius, is stuck, does not move. The other 2 pistons, facing the left are stuck, do not move. Looking at the edge of the mechatronic, opposite to the edge where the solenoid valves are, there are 6 pistons with cotter pins, 2 on the longer part that's protruding, they both push in and spring back out (one of them is deeper in, but still can be pushed with a finger), and there are 4 on the shorter part, by the tab that reads 1068327179. Out of these 4, the 2 smaller ones, to the left, push in and spring back out. The 2 to the right, with bigger radius, are stuck. Is this normal, or the pistons that are stuck are bad and I need a new mechatronic unit? Thank you very much for your time.

      @@sanadelmegrahi7538 Sounds like the bridge seal is broken, this seal is inbetween the valvebody and pump, it takes hydraulic pressure to keep it out of park, if the seal is leaking, you will loose that pressure and the trans will jump back to park. Another thing that can cause this problem is low fluid level

    I have a 2006 330i with the zf6hp19 transmission sitting at 130k miles. I'm doing a transmission service because I have a leak. I also get a bump from second to first when coming to a stop. And when I'm flooring it onto the freeway I'll get an insanely hard shift into 4th, or maybe its 5th but it's fine there if I drive normal. I'm assuming some of this may be due to low fluid. I'm installing a new pan and filter, new fluid, mechatronic seal, taking out the valve body and replacing the 5 seals above it, and the solenoids. Relfill fluids with the proper procedure and reset adaptations. I just found out about this sonnax zip kit. Is this something I should do as well? I have no transmission fault codes.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly never used the zip kit. A common issue with this trans is bushing wear, when the rear stator bushing is worn effects the higher gears (4th,5th,6th). Before you pull this apart you may want to check fluid level if it's low fill it and drive the car to see if anything changes.
      sounds like a good plan of what you want to change, that may fix it up, solenoids are a big problem on this trans too.

      @@lyasamusic3241 im curious as well on what exactly causes it. I did the service mentioned above and the bump from second to first is gone and so is my hard shift into 4th, or was it 5th? I didn't get the zip kit due to time constraints, kind of wish I did, but the service still did wonders. I have read on forums that the solenoids cause it, but I have also read someone saying that they got the software updated on the transmission at bmw and it went away as well. If that's cheap to do, maybe try that first? At 130k miles, my fluid was nasty, so I'm glad I did the service regardless. Maybe I'll also get the software update as well.

    Hello Gary. I recently bought a BMW 2004 525i with the 6hp19 giving some problems. When you don't accelerate quickly, it shifts ok, slips a tiny bit, but still shifts. When I want to go fast, it feels like it completely slips and I have to let go of the gas, and it puts a transmission failure on the screen. since then, I took the pan out, the fluid was very bad, very gunky and black but no metal shavings. Tested the solenoids the same way you did and they all were good apparently. I took the valve body apart, and those rubber dampers are completely flat. One of the poles that are spring loaded seemed to be a bit damaged with some small scratches. I'm going to order the dampners and pray that that fixes the problem

Had a fluid change about 5 months ago. 140000 miles. Do you think a valve body clean and zip kit would help reduce the flare? Or could it be a worn stator bushing on the pump? Could the solenoids be a little slow causing the delay in shifting? Thanks

      Gary Ferraro actually it's not isolated to one shift. Can be 2-3, 3-4 and 4-5. It is probably a bit more pronounced during 3-4. Sometimes I get a slight bump 5-6. Regards. I'm going to double check the fluid level tomorrow. It was checked by a tranny specialist about 3 months ago but you never know. All looks dry underneath the new sump. I'm prepared to install the zip kit parts if necessary. No delays or thumps when selecting R or D. During coasting down there can be some engine braking between downshifts also. Sometimes feels like a manual when you use the engine to brake.

      Gary Ferraro Hi Gary. Not sure if I understand the second part of your question sorry. I do see the small flare once on each up shift under acceleration. Less if I accelerate harder. If I anticipate the change and back off the gas a little then its hardly noticeable. I'm thinking of removing the valve body this week to inspect the parts inside. Just to note I do have a rear reluctor ring that is just very slightly warped. Planning on addressing that later this week. I have a new ring to install. Many thanks for your time.

The complete transmission kit is 780$ that's if to do by yourself dealers charge to much. The transmission oil pan complete kit by (ZF) it had 10 quarts in the box. When I drained this time from my car it was about five quarts (5) then what to do with the rest it's not refundable. This is my second BMW 750LI (2008) This one sometimes will not reverse sometime it will jump like as someone hit you from backside.
    It has long wheel 22 inches base. The car is in mint condition inside out. Also the battery is brand new and it does not hold charge I have to boost every week. when scanning the error code P0732 transmission fault.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      These ZF units have to be filled from the bottom, you really need a pump to refill these units. There is a 8mm or 10mm(i think thats the size) usually on the left side above the pan rail. with the engine off you fill it til the fluid runs out, then you start the car and fill it again til the fluid runs out. P0732 is a gear ratio error in 2nd. Do you have the reverse problem hot or cold. How does the car upshift and downshift?

      Mine is a GA6HP26Z and did the same, also it used to shift rough 1st - 2nd and vice versa from time to time. Mechanic did an adaptation reset few months ago and it's been buttery smooth ever since.
