Today I am playing through the entirety Legendary Mode on the For The Worthy seed for the first time, and as a pure summoner, only using summon weapons throughout my entire playthrough. This is the true test of skill, dodging, and just getting good lol.

Thankfully Summoner is getting a whole lot more love in the upcoming 1.4.5 update. The new Mushroom Boi minion and Barnacle sentry from the Dead Cells crossover, the new whips including the Stardust, Corrupt, Crimson, Meteorite, and Duke Fishron whips, and summoner Chlorophyte helmet are all going to be so good.

19:20 I take offense to the spider staff slander! They're actually really good, IF you bother to put down walls for them. Most people never bother with walls in their arenas, which leaves the spiders slowly flying after things and not really doing damage, which makes them look worse than they really are. Gotta have the walls for them to run on to see their full potential.
That assumes that players that spend dozens or hundreds of hours on a world would spend 15 minutes to wall off an arena
Even with walls there are usually better options like Abigail or the blade staff, but yeah with walls they're pretty good. Main problem with them is they interfere with each others damage, so say you have 6 spiders and they all hit at the exact same time, only 3 of them will hit (because there is 3 different types of spiders that summon). So it's actually best to minion mix with 3 spiders and use the rest on something else
@CJDEATHBOT yeah, but you may as well do 4 since the 4th is basically free since each one only counts as 0.75 minion slots.
@Krell356 that was changed in 1.4 so now they use 1 slot like everything else.
@@CJDEATHBOT Blade Staff IS pretty insane, that's just hard to beat overall. For a weirdly long time too, I'd be tempted to call them overtuned if they weren't a summon weapon.
Seeing that black recluses one-tap on Legendary was probably the nastiest surprise I've ever gotten trying to farm spider armor in this game.
I love how OSOGOF tunnels have become a legit term in the community.
In my head during the first Plantera fight was literally “wow he really should’ve made an OSOGOF Tunnel, rookie mistake” and then 20 seconds later…
Some summoner/pre-hardmode boss tips for people who might want to try this: Projectile damage doesn't increase in ftw, only contact damage. Choosing to reforge all your accesories to warding makes this entire challenge significantly more doable.
Never use more than 2-3 of each pre-hm minion, due to how their i-frames work, you won't gain any dps in a lot of occasions. This doesn't apply to hornets as their projectiles are non piercing. It's still always better to minion mix in pre-hardmode.
The sharpening station is very useful, you can just hold out a melee weapon (like a pickaxe) and the minions will still get the armor penetration, this is especially broken with flinxs/vampire frogs. Whips do not count as melee weapons. I take advantage of this when I'm low on health and have to stop whipping. (On some bosses with a lot of enemies on the screen like the wall it's actually better to not whip at all and let the minions do the damage, this also allows you to focus more on surviving. This is invalidated by hardmode whips as they deal a lot of damage compared to just 12 armor penetration.)
A long platform is enough for slime/eye, fight brain on the surface and make a very long platform that extends to the entire crimson for first phase, this makes it almost impossible to get hit by anything unless you look away or something. For second phase you just need a solid block platform (which is still considered crimson) above you for when it switches the gravity and hook up to your main platform every time it moves.
The slime mount makes queen bee almost free. Make your arena so every jump with the mount lands you perfectly on another platform and do this for 3-4 rows. Jump only when she dashes and drop when you're at the top. You can dodge stingers enough to not die by just moving left/right without stopping. Imps are good in this fight as she moves very quick.
Skeletron isn't really special. If you're struggling to survive, just don't whip at all and hold out a melee weapon for the whole night. You have enough damage. You may need to do a lot of micro movement for the second phase, the shield of cthulhu is absolutely not recommended.
The wall, use 3 frogs, 1 flinx and 2-3 imps. Make the minions focus on the top eye, this allows the frogs to constantly jump on both the eye and the mouth and deal crazy damage. Frogs have pretty good range so you don't even need the wall on the screen. As expected, don't whip at all and hold your pickaxe. Whipping would be both dangerous and make your minions focus on something else, which greatly reduces your dps. You only need to whip when the wall starts getting really fast, frogs or flinxs won't be able to catch up here, so it's better to summon hornets and imps for the last tug.

Summoner is by far the most fun class but Re-logic never gave it the love it deserved. I remeber when they updated the game and made it an actually playable class (summoning was always a viable class but the amount of summon weapons was VERY limited, and you needed to use magic weapons since whips weren’t a thing yet) I was so happy. With that being said, I still feel like Terraria is a pretty hard on the summoner class but it’s much more balanced now!

@micahfurlow2624 The summoner class really does seem to benefit the most from direct crossovers. Don't Starve brought a great summon and the earliest obtainable sentry, Dungeon Defenders 2 made the sentry subclass a thing, and there's others now including Dead Cells. Love to see it

the people who say summoner is the worst class are the same people that can't handle not being able to shred through every pre-hard mode boss with a single sword
Tip: you can fight skeletron prime at the ocean with a water walking potion or terraspark boots without the need of making an arena.

I can’t believe so many people think summoner is actually the weakest class in the game.
The dmg potential is just insane, summons are a big QoL feature while you are just doing smth in the world and play style is actually interesting.
From my personal experience it’s the strongest class in pre boss, pre wall, early hardmode, post plantera stages of the game (aka like 60-70% of the game, lmao)
Super convenient gameplay, a ton of dmg and very rewarding risk/reward gameplay, where you can actually try getting closer to the boss, stack multiple whips and this risk will actually result in insane dmg boost. This class is my best choice.
It's a shame the main content mods don't usually add whips. JUSTICE FOR SUMMONER!!
Yeah, especially like that time I used the Blade Staff against the mechs on legendary mode, it's just that strong, the only boss that I took very short attempts at was Skeletron Prime, since when I put Dungeon Bricks, and used the Black Spot as my mount, it's just that easy
And yes, I did use whip stack
Durendal + Cool Whip + Spinal Tap + Snapthorn (Durendal because I defeated Twins 1st and also crafted the Optic Staff)
@@yaboidragonitehere1137 Yup. Both firecracker speed stacking + sanguine bats or cool whip + speed stacking with blade staff are incredibly strong for early (and sometimes even mid) hard mode.
I quit this challenge personally after losing to the destroyer so many times. Kudos for actually doing it!

A tiny amount of advice: it's actually recommended to mix hornets and imps for the WoF, because the imps have great crowd control and inflict the on fire debuff, and hornets are great single target and inflicts poison

I kind of want to see a Summoner run where you can only have one of each summon on the field. So if you had four summon slots, you couldn't just summon four imps, but you could summon an imp, a vampire frog, a flinx, and Abigail. It would be a great way to showcase some of the weirder, less used summons. Plus the screen would be complete chaos, which is always fun
Hey, I did that in ftw legendary. Surprisingly fun. Gets a bit annoying where you have to summon each one after death. Early hardmode is really grindy as you could just choose to beat the mechs with an army of pre hardmode summons and a spider (It's possible, summoner has more than enough dps) but I wanted to have the most fun/variety so I annoyingly grinded the blade, sanguine, and the pirate staff.
It gets crazier/grindier after plantera/golem as you get access to desert tiger, xeno, raven, deadly sphere, fishrons summon and terraprisma. Would definitely recommend trying in lower difficulties first (or scrap ftw). Boss fights last 2 to 3x longer

If there's one thing I learned it's that a thorns potion would've helped alot for King Slime and Skeletron
I think the only actual problems with summoner is its slow start and its middling option variety - and even then, the latter is just shorthand for saying it's designed around quality over quantity.

I played calamity's malice mode on master difficulty and using summoner only. it was my second experience using calamity mod. It was hellish and gruesome.
I had QoL mods like free potions and boss summons to save time and instant platforms for fast arenas and it still took me over 200 hours.
I would like to suggest another calamity video, this time infernum summoner only. I've yet to play infernum after it fully came out and I don't have the time to play such a time consuming run these days.

Definitely. I've seen a person do it live on Twitch, in HC as well. Small Terraria Streamer. Took him many, many, MANY attempts, I've been watching his streams for like two months but he finally did it. Oh, he also went for daytime empress kill after Fishron before even attempting to beat the game (which is where the most runs died) which he could've done multiple times over. But he eventually did it: summoner only, hardcore, legendary difficulty, with daylight empress killed just for style points. Respect. I don't remember his name though, but it was a captivating to watch.
Edit: On second thought it might've been master mode, but it's still extremely impressive all things considered. I'd much rather do your challenge than his!

I used to be Melee at some time in legendary mode, but it turns out, I just got bored with it and switched to summoner, and that's where my summoner playthrough begins, I'm now fighting Moon Lord with the Terraprisma in my hands, I'll never forget the days that I literally spent on in that world if I defeated Moon Lord
Props for using the betsy's wings. I mentioned that in a previous video I think. Hover is super good. I wish more wings had them. I tend to use the starboard with hover even all the way through Calamitas in Calamity.

I wish they added a toggle option that switches whips after every hit automatically, if you have them adjacent in the hotbar
Pro tip for the legendary golem fight. You can set your home right outside the golem room or use a rod of discord to get out. Ideally you want a large arena in the jungle outside of the boss room. you can also use illuminant coating on background walls to turn it into a shadow box fight. This is the strategy I used and posted to the discord for fighting golem on Legendary Get Fixed Boi.
Legendary mode is really fun to watch. I hope this becomes a trend

Funny enough, I was doing a FTW summoner playthrough with my friend on ps4, safe to say that we didn’t get past Plantera bc of how bad controllers are on terraria. Kudos to you though, you’re the goat!
This is the first time I have ever seen anyone EVER unironically use turrets outside of the old ones army or a turret only challenge
Let me give you a HUGE hint: mounts does summoning damage, and the slime mount is op against the brain, EoW, Skeletron, Queen bee, Skele prime, destroyer, twins and duke f., though for the hardmode ones you kinda need the queen slime mount cuz it’s more op

Summoner only is really fun. After they added whips it's really become the glass cannon class and imo it's so much more fun to actually have to doge attacks like it's life or death while dealing insane damage

I killed some bosses but then the evil spread into my home and I gave up.
Maybe that'd be a good next challenge.
Multiple minions you can mix together, each with different mechanics giving more strategy. And the whips adding another layer of mechanics and mixing. On top of being viable with meelee accessories unlike other classes that only work with them selves.
Summoner is easily one of the most flexible and unique classes.

I agree with the Hornet Staff, its really decent and doesn't have Imp's issues, mainly getting interrupted by I-frames
You know what would be cool? If Terraria had a thing where you could choose your class when you join a world, and get the first weapons that fits every class

I see why you used hornets instead of imps, since Skeletron can apparently deflect projectiles while spinning, which can assist in stunlocking the player.
You can use actuators on the golem summoning item, then you place it on a custom arena, and fight it like normal, but with more space.

random reminder if you turn your platform into stairs you can fall through them without stopping but can still walk on them so it makes boss attacks easier to dodge in arenas (like still in a horisontal line)

In an older version of Terraria, you CAN actuate jungle brick. They patched it because it was considered too much of a cheese. It's the same with explosive bunnies to beat bosses.

I did this on the zenith seed about a month ago and it wasnt that bad. Summoner is not nearly as weak as people think it is.

It would be fun to see you play terraria as a gun wielding ranger but only using basic musket balls and no other ammo types
6:48 warding is better than menacing even late game because of gow much survivability it gives late game. TH-camr sorbecaffe has a great video detailing this

I know how good warding is. It's just especially good early game because menacing barely effects low damaging weapons and there's a lack of defence in armour and accessories. A full damage post plantera build with summoner can sometimes be better than a full defence build and definitely more fun if you're good at dodging, as seen later in the video. But yes I am a full advocate for survivability, defence and damage reduction are broken.

Warding is only good if you always play melee because you don't know how to dodge. If you are any other class, you know how to dodge, so menacing will be better.
@@alien3200 this is false, unless you can consistently no hit a boss you WILL get hit, and especially in master mode, sorbecafe did a really in depth analysis comparing them and the amount of extra damage from menacing is barely anything vs having to lose damage from dodging to survive. And even in master mode for wall of flesh, full warding let's you tank 9 Lazer shots vs normally like 3 so you don't need to be basically perfect when dodging the lasers then. Saying menacing is better just means you haven't compared them, or can CONSISTENTLY no hit all bosses on master mode
@@Goteryup you know what in my summoner playthrough, When I was battling moon lord, I was consistently loosing because I was getting hit by his attacks, all my accesories were reforged to warding but at one point I realised, no matter how much defence I have, if I get hit by moon lord once, it's all over. So I reforged my accesories to menacing and I was easily able to win. Warding is good pre hardmode, but late game when weapons deal Damage close to 100 menacing is better, because you get tons of free dps

whip stacking is absolutely broken. blade staff with snapthorn, cold snap and durendal is the best dps pre-plantera, and if you whip stack with firecracker and stardust dragon staff it can almost deal as much dps as the zenith pre-moonlord

For Summoners it's worth getting the Berserker's Gauntlet since you get 8 extra defense at basically zero cost.
