A few tips from knowledge that have come to me through time if you ever do this again (and for me to refresh on for my current master mode playthrough, which I'm thinking about playing summoner for) 1. A wall of blocks around you (and as others have said for general spider minion tips) makes Dread Nautilus a fair bit easier, which can give you the Sanguine staff early into hard mode a pretty good summon from what I remember, as it doesn't have the problems of Spiders and Pirates, seeing as they fly 2.Whip Stacking is a pretty good and cool mechanic, which is having multiple whips in your hot bar and using them all (mainly your strongest one for the added dps, this helps your summons themselves as the tag damage (which just adds onto your minion damage) stacks from multiple whips 3.Old Ones Army can be pretty good for armor in earlier hard mode, as they have decent defense
To be completely honest. Everything after that emptess fight was easy mode, but well earned easy mode. Nothing in the base game can beat day time empress of light without cheese. Your dedication is out of this world for doing that when you did. Massive props.

Yeah I never really touched summoner for awhile but now that I’m starting my master mode summoner it is definitely a fun class once you get the hang of it and it isn’t as bad as I thought it was I must say this class is fun. Also for anyone who doesn’t know since I see the issue on plantera here if you destroy all the background walls in your arena it makes plantera slow as hell as it can’t grip walls except those way outside the arena.
Nice video, honestly I love the summoner class. As thanks to certain mechanics like whip stacking, I feel it can be a lot more interesting than any other class. Such as how certain minions are better in certain situations. Also IIRC minecarts can make plantera much easier. As you can move around her only focusing on damage. Ow and Tiki armour is arguably better than Spooky armour for whip builds due to it's whip buffs. Well assuming this is 1.4.4 anyway. Ow and a quick tip for Daytime EoL the Witch's Broom from the Pumpkin Moon is amazing. It is fast enough to dodge all of her attacks and having infinite flight makes fighting Empress a lot easier. Since it basically keeps you at basically the perfect range to whip her. Though I would have tried to get the Xeno Staff or Raven Staff first. As the Deadly Spheres just struggle to keep up with Empress due to how fast she is. That said while hard I consider her the best fight in the game. Due to how it is almost like a dance with her attack patterns. Also with Solar Pillar IIRC it is way easier when you stay on the ground. As when flying it spawns way worse enemies. Finally for the Moonlord fight Stardust Dragon is a much better choice that Teraprisma. Basically for fast enemies Teraprisma for slower enemies Stardust has much higher damage. Ow and Stardust + Firecracker is one of the best damage combos for Summoner. Since Firecracker scales off of the summons damage. And Stardust has the highest single hit damage of any summon.
As somehow who just decided to do another run of the game, AS SUMMONER, the yt recommendation was made for me. Loved the editing and thoroughly enjoyed. Well earned sub from me
Really fantastic video, the only thing that could be improved with the summoner gameplay is whip stacking. You can use multiple whips to stack the summon tag damage, also with whips for example after a hit increased whip speed can be taken advantage by other whips for the buff duration
This is a great video, I thought this was gonna be dunking on summoners the whole time but you just wanted to try them out, kudos for sharing this btw, you do some good editing and have good commentary, wish you luck on future endeavors
as a summoner main for many years and as someone who has heated master mode summoner 9(?) times in the past couple months, 1. abigail’s flower is op early pre boss up to later in prehardmode mode. 2. go jungle fishing as early as you can so you can get a lot of summoner potions 3. go for the sanguine staff as early as you can as you can go up to post plantera where you get the deadly sphere staff 4. tempest staff deals much more damage than the deadly sphere staff. 5. do pillars before daytime empress for stardust dragon 6. do nighttime empress before daytime empress for kaleidoscope besides that i think you did pretty well for your first time!
Some additional info as someone who gave himself carpal tunnel from whip stacking: Abigail's Flower can actually get some additional use in early HM with the firecracker and spider armor. I found her dmg output to be pretty damn good against HM enemies and she can body Queen Slime, Dreadnautilus, and the Destroyer depending on how you play. Sanguine got hit hard by 1.4.4's nerfs so its dmg output, while still good for its tier of pre-Mech, stops being as competitive pre-Plantera since you get access to the Optic staff with the buffs it got in 1.4.4. Due to how a good chunk of the pre-hardmode minions share enemy I-frames with other minions of the same type, you don't actually want to summon a lot of just one minion, especially the imp staff. For example, If you summon 2 or more of an imp and they attack the enemy at the same time, only one of the attacks will actually land due to I-frames. (The spider staff also shares a similar issue which is why you only ever want to use up to 3 spiders at a time) To combat this, it's advised to mix up your minions. So instead of doing 5 imps against the WoF with obsidian armor, you could try 1 imp, 2 flinxes(3 with Bee armor), and 2 frogs. Flinxes are actually a cheat code to this I-frame issue since they bounce off the enemy each attack but they still eventually succumb to this issue. Terraprisma is amazing for events and the like but you can actually get more dmg by mixing it with a 3 stack stardust dragon staff summon. Mixing the 2 leads to the highest dmg against ML if you're willing to get close to ML. However if you aren't sweaty you can just use all your summons on the dragon instead since its bigger aggro range is more suitable for ML than the terraprisma. Lastly, if you're willing to get sweaty, stacking whip buffs/debuffs can increase your dmg output a bunch and is what can keep something like the blade staff competitive with other summons well into post-Plantera despite being pre-Mech. Terrasteel and Shyguymask have videos on this if you're interested.
@@Shadic6098 Hi! I'm starting a master mode summoner run and trying to get the flinx staff, what is your recommendation for each phase's loadouts/weapons?And is the optic staff better than blade staff?
@@melo5878 My bad for not catching your reply earlier. In general my recommendations for each tier's loadouts and weapons will tend to fall in line with Jason's guide which you can find here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1BOFcsgKl2gvc7IaFYKHusIQYlhtMj5bm Optic staff can be better but it depends on the amount of whips you're using with the blade staff. Iirc, one whip blade will tend to fall behind other one whip options the further up the tiers you go past pre-mech. Though that's just accounting for raw dmg. For general exploration, I find the blade staff to be better because it doesn't get stuck on anything like optic or deadly sphere.
The best whip in terraria is firecracker, you get it from WoF and you use it all the way to plantera. Cool whip is usually used as a support whip for whip stacking.
Summoner is truly tied for best class with Melee for me! Who’d have thought doing nothing is some of the most fun you can have in Terraria? Just kidding of course, summons are very pleasant due to them defending you but the lack of armor is seriously brutal, even more so in master mode. Very well done!
Or just don't use spiders using Abigail + firecracker to kill queen slime(blade staff) or dreadnautalis(sanguine staff) because Abigail gets a buff in hardmode to get a 135% increase in damage and speed instead of a 55% increase. This is coming from a sweaty summoner main
I really just want to comment on what I think could’ve been done differently here, I never saw the Rod of Discord in the video, which could’ve saved you from getting pinned by Plantera, Skeletron Prime, getting trapped by Destroyer, getting out of a bad line-up in 3rd phase of Fishron, dodging the phantasmal death ray in the Moon Lord fight, and no doubt could’ve helped with daytime EoL. I have a few other minor critiques but they’re not super important, the only thing I think is super important is the RoD
my advice on queen slime is building a flat area with any blocks then making two 1x1 pillars on both ends and filling it with water it significantly decreases queen's mobility and renders her minions useless since they can't shoot while in water this carries you through the 1st phase
I love the doing the minibosses, but no! You're making the classic blunder of summoner, not diversifying your whips and minions. This is most poignant with whips as their affects are so important that I use the snapthorn for its jungle's fury buff all the way until I get the durendal. Also most do what you do and simply use one minion for all their slots, which can be fine, but causes problems depending on the summon, this is especially bad with the spider staff where, for a single target, there's no reason to summon more than three of them due to i-frames, plus diverse minion sets can do things like apply statuses like I always mix imps and hornets pre-hm for that, plus mixed minion sets look cool. Also the blade staff is good in niche situations but I wouldn't use it generally. Also melee flasks work on whips, I favor ichor, or cursed flames if you're not opposed to using the golden shower purely for the debuff. Also the papyrus scarab stacks with all its materials, the magma gauntlet is better than the feral claws for several reasons even if the melee damage doesn't work, I'd recommend keeping a slime mount, king or queen, on you at all times to prevent things like that poor skeleton fight. The shield of cthulu is a crutch that many rely too heavily on for far too long, don't generally use boots with wings as they don't synergize well, use a flying mount instead of wings if you like the way mount flight feels as it frees up an accessory slot, all emblems stack, the forbidden armor is excellent in early HM, the OOA is majorly overlooked and is an excellent source of free damage in the form of sentries pre HM, no I don't care about the houndius shootius it's utterly abominable and you know it, definitely use a dash specifically for the martian saucers and just go back and forth, the tempest staff is awful unless obtained pre mech, for daytime empress there are many guides but a good dodge build and a minecart track can well not quite cheese her, well, I mean, it's as much cheese as American cheese is. Did you not do Dreadnautilus or Torch God?
And he didn't use Abigail's flower on skeleton WHICH WOULD HAVE KICKED SKELLY PRIMES ASS... Abigail is a FLYING SUMMON who gets more powerful the more you use here so with his current minion stats he could summon an Abby that does 70 DAMAGE AT A RATE FASTER THEN HIS WHIP AS LONG AS THE BOSS STANDS STILL WHICH SKELLY PRIME OFTEN DOES...I'm pre mech bosses and used Abby to farm spider stuff...IT TOOK 5 MINUTES I WAS DOING 500 DPS DO BETTER!🤣
Would LOVE to watch a playthrough of this if that's possible. I mean, you have the footage, even if you posted 1 maybe 2 videos a week, it would be dope. I like seeing how other people play and what they go for first because everyone has their own play style.
Pro Tip: Use multiple Whips! Whips got a stat called "Tag damage" which means after hitting an enemy with the whip, the damage the summons do on that target in the next couple seconds has the tag damage added on top. So if you use 4 whips with 6, 8, 10 and 12 tag damage, each hit of any summon will do 36 more damage. You dps is just bound to skyrocket. Just as long as you can hit it all the time. Against plantera this is amazing
Idea pitch: early game summoner whip lasso recipe 100 rope damage 5 (no summon buffs)(slows enemies) (medium knockback) its meant to be like the wooden bow is to ranger and copper shortsword is to melee made to be shoddy and crafted quickly
Another tip from a summoner-in-progress. You can whip stack, so basically the morning star from plantera dungeon does a ton of damage for less atk speed, you can also use the dark harvest from pumpkings on pumpkin moon to have that extra atk speed buff when you hit an enemy, there is also a summon *tag* damage stat which basically instead of one whip doing 8 extra damage to the summon for approx 3 seconds after an enemy is hit by that whip with 8 tag damage it will do 8 tag damage, but if you use another whip that had 6 tag damage after 3 seconds hit the enemy once with it the summon will do 14 extra damage then keep attacking with your stronger whip until around another 3 seconds. Really useful for bosses.
for the skeletron fight you should have used only one imp because they run on static i-frames, meaning no matter how many you have only one can hit at once
I love this idea. Summoner is the most fun to play just because of how cautious you have to be. I remember beating 1.3 summoner without whips 😅 that was difficult
Pro tip from an old school summoner: if you build a wall behind your arenas the spider staff can actually reach flying enemies.
Having a background wall really helps the spider.

Watching someone playing true summoner for the first time is so cool. You can see them getting a lot better with each minute passing by.
A few tips from knowledge that have come to me through time if you ever do this again (and for me to refresh on for my current master mode playthrough, which I'm thinking about playing summoner for)
1. A wall of blocks around you (and as others have said for general spider minion tips) makes Dread Nautilus a fair bit easier, which can give you the Sanguine staff early into hard mode a pretty good summon from what I remember, as it doesn't have the problems of Spiders and Pirates, seeing as they fly
2.Whip Stacking is a pretty good and cool mechanic, which is having multiple whips in your hot bar and using them all (mainly your strongest one for the added dps, this helps your summons themselves as the tag damage (which just adds onto your minion damage) stacks from multiple whips
3.Old Ones Army can be pretty good for armor in earlier hard mode, as they have decent defense
To be completely honest. Everything after that emptess fight was easy mode, but well earned easy mode. Nothing in the base game can beat day time empress of light without cheese. Your dedication is out of this world for doing that when you did. Massive props.
Anything in the base game can defeat daytime empress of light, you just have to be good enough to dodge

The amount of dedication, from playing the hardest class and on the hardest difficulty, not to mention the amount of attempts on the EoL. Subscribed.

Congrats on the recent growth, you deserve it. Ready for another banger

Really fantastic video, the only thing that could be improved with the summoner gameplay is whip stacking. You can use multiple whips to stack the summon tag damage, also with whips for example after a hit increased whip speed can be taken advantage by other whips for the buff duration

Bro woke up and chose pain
as a summoner main for many years and as someone who has heated master mode summoner 9(?) times in the past couple months,
1. abigail’s flower is op early pre boss up to later in prehardmode mode.
2. go jungle fishing as early as you can so you can get a lot of summoner potions
3. go for the sanguine staff as early as you can as you can go up to post plantera where you get the deadly sphere staff
4. tempest staff deals much more damage than the deadly sphere staff.
5. do pillars before daytime empress for stardust dragon
6. do nighttime empress before daytime empress for kaleidoscope
besides that i think you did pretty well for your first time!
Some additional info as someone who gave himself carpal tunnel from whip stacking:
Abigail's Flower can actually get some additional use in early HM with the firecracker and spider armor.
(The spider staff also shares a similar issue which is why you only ever want to use up to 3 spiders at a time)
To combat this, it's advised to mix up your minions.
Terrasteel and Shyguymask have videos on this if you're interested.
yep! thanks for expanding/correcting everything!!@@Shadic6098
@@Shadic6098 Hi! I'm starting a master mode summoner run and trying to get the flinx staff, what is your recommendation for each phase's loadouts/weapons?And is the optic staff better than blade staff?
@@melo5878 My bad for not catching your reply earlier. In general my recommendations for each tier's loadouts and weapons will tend to fall in line with Jason's guide which you can find here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1BOFcsgKl2gvc7IaFYKHusIQYlhtMj5bm
Optic staff can be better but it depends on the amount of whips you're using with the blade staff. Iirc, one whip blade will tend to fall behind other one whip options the further up the tiers you go past pre-mech.
Though that's just accounting for raw dmg. For general exploration, I find the blade staff to be better because it doesn't get stuck on anything like optic or deadly sphere.
I've played summoner before and it is FUN!
Don't listen to other people saying that Summoner is bad,
You should try it!
Very well done!
nice video
i have a good tip for summoners
if you will use the spider staff just summon 3 spiders vs bosses
or the dmg will be too low
Or just don't use spiders using Abigail + firecracker to kill queen slime(blade staff) or dreadnautalis(sanguine staff) because Abigail gets a buff in hardmode to get a 135% increase in damage and speed instead of a 55% increase. This is coming from a sweaty summoner main

my advice on queen slime is building a flat area with any blocks then making two 1x1 pillars on both ends and filling it with water it significantly decreases queen's mobility and renders her minions useless since they can't shoot while in water this carries you through the 1st phase
You completely never giving up on empress of light is crazy good job

25:56 your not alone

Pro Tip: Use multiple Whips! Whips got a stat called "Tag damage" which means after hitting an enemy with the whip, the damage the summons do on that target in the next couple seconds has the tag damage added on top. So if you use 4 whips with 6, 8, 10 and 12 tag damage, each hit of any summon will do 36 more damage. You dps is just bound to skyrocket. Just as long as you can hit it all the time. Against plantera this is amazing

As a summoner main that plays master mode all you have to do is over prepare and be good at dodging
Man this is actually fire. Good job!
No Cobalt Shield in HM is actual insanity to me. Great job regardless!
