I believe this is the best representation of “Top 10s” at least for Board Games. The two of you passionately elaborates, expounds and share the feats and aspects of the choice games in your list without overselling them too much or going on stale and tedious when elucidating them. It always feel natural and nice to listen to. It very much convinces me to “hey I should definitely try this”. Although not all of course, but it reasonably helps me resonate more and consider a game before buying it. Others are just like “ohh I really love this…” and “I just freakin’ love this game” without expressing themselves in a more understandable manner. I guess Top 10’s shares that “marketing-like” aspect of attracting people to give certain items a chance to be experienced and you guys always did that brilliantly alrhough the basic premise is just “expressing or sharing” which is inherently good. The top 50’s you did before? TOTALLY liked and felt that. Your Vital Lacerda inputs? Mind-blowingly exciting and interesting. You even convince me more to try On Mars (still saving money for it though since I just got Lisboa and Age of Steam) despite it being so intimidating and you guys both put it “the most complicated” of Lacerda’s games. This channel is a gem.
I’m 5 seconds into the video (after the coffee ad), and I already have to comment. Johari is my most underrated game. It’s in my top 10 all time favorites. I’m psyched. This is going to be a great list.
16:50 I recently designed a 3D-printable insert and dice tower for the original printing of The Castles of Burgundy. Increase fun and reduce setup and teardown time :D models can be found on printables (for free of course)
Thank you for this top10! I will never get rid of my: Keyflower, Agricola, 7 Wonders, Wingspan, the West Kingdom series, Azul, New York Zoo, Clans of Caledonia, Caverna and Ticket to Ride Europe.
@@BeforeYouPlay Yeah it is 1 of my fav games. I also think it has really good replayability. It has like 60 cases. Most people won't remember the details to any reasonable degree, especially as time goes on. Heck even during the game itself it is hard to know what is right lol.
As always: great review. Very pleased that Bruges finished in first place. Stefan Feld's masterpiece and my hometown. Also funny that you own the Dutch version of Hoity Toity, same as mine. Keep up the good work and... greetings from Bruges.
Great top 10! Always so interesting to hear how certain games resonate with people. For me, my #1 is Hanamikoji. I absolutely love to introduce new gamers to this game, and the moment when they go "aha" after playing the first few rounds.
Lancashire is also my preferred Brass, and I own both as well. I appreciate that Lanc has less rules and plays in less time. Makes it easier to introduce to new players, and thus easier for me to get more plays in.
Odd submission: My equivalent of this is actually a game my friend owns. He has a copy of Inkognito, a deduction game first published in 1988, and since I can't find it anywhere I'm very protective of his. My hope is that, now that he has kids, I can buy it off him and keep it myself.
Never getting rid my old copy of Grand Austria Hotel Wingspan Castles of Burgundy (original) Rokoko (original) Not necessarily my favorite games but for sure won't ever get rid of them.
Every time I hear about Goa I want to try it, I love each of your enthusiasm for these titles.. it really energizes my interest in reexploring my collection with friends. You guys rock!
Definitely some good choices there but a really big cheer for Ginkopolis, a game that has never been as popular as its unique play deserves. Watching you struggle to describe it was all too familiar, it's one of those games you pretty much have to play at least once before you can really grasp what it's doing, but once you get it, it just all clicks into place and makes perfect sense.
I’m going real old school. I am never getting rid of my Monopoly game from the 80’s. Too many game night memories with my parents to get rid of it even though no one, even me, wants to play it anymore. Also never getting rid of trivial pursuit. It was the first game I bought as an adult in the 90s. Current games I would never get rid of is Sleeping Gods, wingspan and splendor.
My home-made version of RoboDerby Express. Mum and I cutting wooden sticks into dice, and then meticulously printing and sticking the dice art onto them. Took forever, but it is my most wonderful game!
Haha nice. Im from holland and its a surprise you are showing the dutch version of Hoity Toity; Adel Verplicht. 💪😀 pronunciation of the dutch title was really good 👍 Parade is a good title. Im happy with my copy, very hard to find indeed
Very, very difficult to give a concise answer to that question, but I'd probably go with: - Abyss (+ expansions ; one of the first games my wife and I bought, and we still love it to this day) - Cascadia - Calico (both these games are so simple, yet offer just the right amount of brain-burning to make us (and anyone we've introduced them to) want to come back to them again and again) - Everdell (technically getting rid of this game to replace it with the Complete Collection, but that title is not going anywhere - gameplay aside, its entire universe resonates so much with the Redwall books I was so enamoured with as a child/teenager that it has quickly become the centrepiece of my collection) - Hadrian's Wall (so satisfying as a solo game; it looks daunting at first, but then the pleasure of triggering all those chain reactions kicks in, and it's hard to get bored while playing) - Scythe (I think I needn't add to what you've already said) - PARKS (beautiful, relaxing, and again, just the right amount of challenge to it). This list will probably become far longer with all the Kickstarters arriving at the end of the year / Q1 2022.
We've tied all of those except for Abyss (the box art draws me in so much!) and Hadrian's Wall. Hopefully there wont be too many delays in KS shipping due to the global shipping problems going on.
@@BeforeYouPlay Abyss is a wonderful game with fantastic components and artwork, is very easy to teach, and really underrated :-) Admittedly it plays best with both its expansions added on (they give the core game far more strategic depth, and fix some of its less interesting mechanisms), but if you get the chance, jump in! As for Hadrian's Wall..... a pure endorphin factory.
I prefer Brass: Lancashire because it's a bit tighter and tougher of a challenge. Birmingham is a bit easier and more forgiving of mistakes. I prefer Agricola over Caverna and Le Havre over A Feast for Odin for the same reason. I like my heavier games to have pointy edges and force me to really think. Great video! I just ordered a copy of Hoity Toity off bgg marketplace. :-)
- Discworld: Ankh-Morpork (it was a gift and is out of print) - Anachrony (My first Big Game, also I've upgaded it to Infinity box + extra tokens) - In the hall of the mountain king (one of my favourite games, again deluxified) - Space Race (I have both the card and the board versions, love the art, like the mechanics, at leat one of them will remain forever with me) - Cerebria (love the art, unique settings, pre-painted minis ...) + few more that were gifts
I am never getting rid of: Alchemists, Aeon’s End, Archipelago, Everdell, Mice & Mystics, Le Havre, Quacks, SOS Titanic, Spirits of the Wild and Valletta.
Interesting you say that will not get rid of Valletta. That was a game I was interested of for a couple of years ago but never bought and forgot about it. What is good with that game?
@@edmundengland actually while I do like the game, the reason I’m not getting rid of it is because we bought it in France after staying in Valletta. So it’s a souvenir of our trip. :)
@@BeforeYouPlay Scythe. We were at a local game store and had the game demoed to us and loved it immediately. Bought a copy on the spot with a couple expansions.
I love two rooms and a boom as my go to ice breaker / full group activity at a party. I think it plays at 10 people fine for a few rounds, especially if keeping it to basic roles. Would love to have a larger experience with the game though with some time to delve into different roles (every time I've set it up it's been at max 3 games). This was a cool topic to cover as it got some more unknowns to think about if ever running across used copies or new printings.
Our number 1 would have to be Kohaku. The wife and I just adore this game and play it to the wee hours of the night when we get it out and just keep playing just ONE more game. It had a pretty limited run, there were complaints about the acrylic tiles being sharp and those edges scratching the paint, but we sanded down all the edges and put on a coat of laquer on the back side and it has survived hundreds of plays in perfect condition so far.
Nice list! I had never heard of a few of the small box games you mentioned, and I’ve been playing games for a looong time, so it’s always fun to hear about something new to me that is so well-loved. Totally agree on Goa, Ginkgopolis, and Bruges-all of them are unique and so very good!
I will never get rid of Dungeonquest. An all time favorite even though there is only a 15% chance of survival!! And I just ordered the Downfall of Pompeii! Hearing Michelle talking about directing lava on your opponents, sold me! Lol
Even though I don't play it that much any more, I'd have to keep Puerto Rico because it is the game that solidified my love of board games and really got me in the hobby beyond the classics of Scrabble and Clue. Another one I hold dear is Expedition: Northwest Passage. I love the theme and the mechanic of the water freezing over and having to put out your sled while worrying about getting back to your boat on time before the ice melts and possibly getting stranded on an ice flow. Along the same lines is the game Raptor. It's not my favourite 2-player only game, there are so many great ones out there, but the theme and the way the game plays, as well as having taken a gamble on it without doing my now mandatory research on the game and finding it to be such a gem really endears it to me. Everdell and Nemesis have been my top two games for the past two years, so I can't see them leaving my collection anytime soon. The Gallerist is my favourite Lacerda game and I would hate to part with that one. Then I have the original Arboretum in the green box and I will keep that forever. The oldest game in my collection and this list is the 1963 3M edition of Acquire which is still an incredible game and plays so well. Lastly I'll add Condottiere to the list because it's a great game in a small box and my board wouldn't lie flat so I kept trying to flatten it more and then it snapped. I ended up snapping the other part off as well and taping them together and that extra bit of character somehow makes me love the game that much more. And it lies flat now. 😜
As a completionist, some of the games I’ll keep forever are more ‘series’ than individual games: 1st edition Descent, Android: Netrunner, Commands and Colors: Ancients. Then there are the “grail games”, ones I pined for for years before I finally got them: Napoleon’s Triumph, Kanban EV and CO2: Second Chance. There are a few that would be so hard to replace that I would hate to part with them: Starcraft, Gears of War And finally, the favourites - not the “new hotness”, but enduring classics; several of which I’ve played hundreds of times: Tash Kalar, Fire in the Lake & Andean Abyss, SPQR, Mr Cabbagehead’s Garden
I know some people that love netrunner. I bought it and almost all the expansions and sold the set when they announced it was ending print. Never enjoyed it and I come from an MTG background. I never felt like when I won it was my doing but sheer happenstance.
This is an awesome list! I’ve learned about so many good games. I am definitely hunting down “Two rooms and a boom”. 😁 Also, I think this is the most I’ve ever seen Naveen speaks in a video. Your excitement is infectious! 😝 Cheers guys. Lovely video.
So many games to discover! Thank you for making this list, hadn't heard of any of these prior. Hope we get to play some of them soon! As for a game we're never getting rid of... our dad's cribbage board :)
1) Spirit Island 2) Century Spice Road (reminds me of your Goa thematically 3) Mechs vs. Minions 4) Dice Throne 5) Raptor 6) Tash Kalar 7) Aquatica 8) Smash Up 9) Dominant Species Marine 10) Ethnos
I wonder if you guys have played the old Avalon Hill game called Diplomacy - not sure it's in your wheelhouse - but when I played it with friends (30 years ago and it was not a new game then) we had hours of fun because of the strategy and also the diplomacy phase - where you would work out deals and sometimes double cross your friends - it was tons of fun.
Oh. I misread the title! I thought you were getting rid of Obsession. What a great, super-underrated game. One of my new favorites. And I just finally got Lancashire - looked more for me than Birmingham. A lot better than I thought it would be. Seemed very dry, so I'd kept away.
Talisman (1983 Original), Knightmare Chess 1 & 2 (Original, not the reprints), Stone Age (w/o the expansion), Das Buch zum Spielen (Rare Catan expansion), and Cosmic Encounter(2000 Avalon Hill) would be a handful of games I would never get rid of. Most of which are out of print and they are just awesome to play. Some my most favorite game experiences were with these games.
Brass Birmingham (I like Lancashire also, but not as much so I gave it to my daughter). Scythe with everything. Istanbul with the coffee expansion. Quacks with all the expansions and geek up bits. Castles of Burgundy. Port Royal with the contracts expansion (I'm on my third copy of that and will need to replace this one soon). Space Base with some of the expansion components. Thanks for the video. I am now looking for a copy of Panamax. Good luck with that.
My sacred titles that am not getting rid of: Agricola original version. This was my entry game into heavier euros and I loved it. I have most of the alternative decks that are out of print for it Le Havre. Also a beloved Uwe Rosenberg game for me Advanced Civilization. Nowadays superseded by Western & Eastern empires, but I will stick to my orginial version. Great game with pretty unique mechanics. However, it is almost impossible to get to the table outside of conventions since you need minimun 5 people committing a full day to play it. Anachrony Infinity box. Recent purchase that won't be reprinted. Great thematic euro game with top notch components. (The metal resource cubes are so wonderful) Terraforming Mars. Awesome game. The Big box edition with metal cubes gives it a delightful table presence
I have most of the Alea big-box series, which includes "Adel Verplicht" (#5 in the series). I would never let any of that series leave my collection. "Castles of Burgundy" is #14 in that series. Totally agree with Ginkgopolis, Obsession, Kanban original, Panamax, Feast for Odin (with Norwegians), Goa, and Bruges. I would never also never get rid of Die Macher, 1841, 1856, 2038, and all of my Splotter games.
I'd also never get rid of that awesome Nintendo shirt! As far as the games, somewhat surprising choices, but great stuff. I'd personally never get rid of a huge chunk of my games, including my Dominion collection (I've got every single card), my fully decked out Big Box KS version of Island of El Dorado, my signed copy of Stomple, my OG Space Hulk and OG Robo Rally sets, and ALL of my Star Wars games (I just love anything Star Wars). Some stuff I'm waiting on that I'll also probably never get rid of is my KS version of Endless Winter and the Big Box for Paladins and all the content for that game, including several KS promo cards.
Still love downfall of pompeii to this day. you guys introduced me to Ginkgopolis and it's one of my fav now. Still need to get Obsession somehow. Great video!
So glad you found Ginkgopolis, Naveen search high and wide for it, he was so happy that they reprinted it! Hopefully you will be able to play Obsession sometime in the near future :-)
I am happy to see several games that I own on your lists. And I see some other ones that I have considered buying in the past. I enjoy you two and your work. Great job!
Scusatemi. Grazie e continuate così!
I'll never get rid of StarCraft, Queen's Gambit, Epic Duels, War of the Ring, and probably 1960 (Z-Man edition), Ad Astra or TI4. I don't want to get rid of nearly any of the games I currently own but those titles in particular are among my favorites and mostly out of print
A lovely list. My personal Forever games are: A Feast for Odin plus expansions Mage Knight Ultimate Edition Star Trek: Frontiers Gloomhaven Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion Lost Ruins of Arnak plus expansion I hope to add Frosthaven and Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread to this list when it's fulfilled, but without having played them, I can only hope they're as good as I wish for them to be Thanks for the fun video! 👍😎🚛
Yah! We love Alchemists! Have the expansion but have never yet done the golem stuff in it. I just like the variable wakeup tiles and the asymmetric start modules.
Fun list! By the way, "Jack's Friends" sounds very similar mechanically to "Not Alone", which I think is getting an expansion, so I am guessing might be easier to get.
What are some games you will never get rid of?
Biblios, Strike, and Flamme rouge for me 😄
Spirit island for me.
Anachrony because we both love it and have spent to bling it out; Firefly because it was one of our first games that brought us into the hobby; 7th Continent because it was our first major Kickstarter, we have all the expansions/promos and is the game we probably have invested the most time into.

There are a few that would be so hard to replace that I would hate to part with them: Starcraft, Gears of War
And finally, the favourites - not the “new hotness”, but enduring classics; several of which I’ve played hundreds of times: Tash Kalar, Fire in the Lake & Andean Abyss, SPQR, Mr Cabbagehead’s Garden
I know some people that love netrunner. I bought it and almost all the expansions and sold the set when they announced it was ending print. Never enjoyed it and I come from an MTG background. I never felt like when I won it was my doing but sheer happenstance.
Naveen - Where did you get that t-shirt, it is so awesome!!
A website called Threadless!
Hi Monica, there is an expension to Café game called Café:Expresso. Are you thinking of getting this one too?
Being from Belgium I'm really suprised and so funny you have a game in my language... "adel verplicht" never heard of that one.
Great to see Panamax here!
Finally! Someone that agrees with me about Brass versions! I found Birmingham to be just a little messy with beer and pottery added on.
I think mine will be: castles of burgundy, Palladins, GWT, feast for Odin.
This is an awesome list! I’ve learned about so many good games. I am definitely hunting down “Two rooms and a boom”. 😁 Also, I think this is the most I’ve ever seen Naveen speaks in a video. Your excitement is infectious! 😝
Cheers guys. Lovely video.
Haha sometimes he gets really excited! Thanks for all the support!!
Great vid and channel!
You should make a similar list of SOLO games too. Great going.
So many games to discover! Thank you for making this list, hadn't heard of any of these prior. Hope we get to play some of them soon! As for a game we're never getting rid of... our dad's cribbage board :)
Best video you've made! Subbed.
That is a neat eclectic list...Goa is definitely a fun one.
Love the video. Thanks!
1) Spirit Island
2) Century Spice Road (reminds me of your Goa thematically
3) Mechs vs. Minions
4) Dice Throne
5) Raptor
6) Tash Kalar
7) Aquatica
8) Smash Up
9) Dominant Species Marine
10) Ethnos
I wonder if you guys have played the old Avalon Hill game called Diplomacy - not sure it's in your wheelhouse - but when I played it with friends (30 years ago and it was not a new game then) we had hours of fun because of the strategy and also the diplomacy phase - where you would work out deals and sometimes double cross your friends - it was tons of fun.
I'm never ditching my game of Candyland. I have the "Lord Licorice" expansion and it makes the game to intense and variegated to ever give up.
thank you for the recommendations : )
Never getting rid of:
- Kingdom Death: Monster
-Obsession
These are my two grail games.
So many people agree with Obsession, it is such a great game! We still haven't tried KDM :-(
KDM is permanently in my collection.
UK pronunciations for Brass games are:
Lanchashire - "lang·kuh·shuh"
Birmingham - "bur·ming·uhm"
Haha it's like we're not even trying! ;-)
Love your videos and this one is great as well. I usually don’t comment, but I really want that T shirt!!! Where did you get it?
Thanks!! He got it from a website called “Threadless”
@@BeforeYouPlay That’s a good site, got it!
Oh. I misread the title! I thought you were getting rid of Obsession. What a great, super-underrated game. One of my new favorites. And I just finally got Lancashire - looked more for me than Birmingham. A lot better than I thought it would be. Seemed very dry, so I'd kept away.
Haha misreading the title completely changes the video! So glad you enjoyed your play of Brass! I can't wait to play it again.
My sacred titles that am not getting rid of:
Agricola original version. This was my entry game into heavier euros and I loved it. I have most of the alternative decks that are out of print for it
Le Havre. Also a beloved Uwe Rosenberg game for me
Advanced Civilization.
(The metal resource cubes are so wonderful)
Terraforming Mars. Awesome game. The Big box edition with metal cubes gives it a delightful table presence
Wow you have a Dutch version of Adel Verplicht! Never heard of it but I decided to try it! Cheers, Stefan (NL)
Great video guys! On a side note, where did Naveen get his t-shirt?? So rad 😎
Thank you so much! It's from a website called "Threadless"
@@BeforeYouPlay Thanks!
Great job!
oh wait...each marker has two games (one each)!
Scusatemi. Grazie e continuate così!
So many games I’ve not heard of… interesting. I’ll have to check them out. I expected to see the usual suspects: Wingspan, Great Western Trail, etc…
Your videos are very professional - congrats. One suggestion, could we see more of the game and less of the people?
A lovely list. My personal Forever games are:
A Feast for Odin plus expansions
Mage Knight Ultimate Edition
Star Trek: Frontiers
Gloomhaven
Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
Lost Ruins of Arnak plus expansion
I hope to add Frosthaven and Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread to this list when it's fulfilled, but without having played them, I can only hope they're as good as I wish for them to be
Thanks for the fun video! 👍😎🚛
Trickerion, On Mars, Scythe, Robinson Cruise, Fury of Dracula, Spirit Island, Paladins, Too many bones, The king is dead, Feudum
Yah! We love Alchemists! Have the expansion but have never yet done the golem stuff in it. I just like the variable wakeup tiles and the asymmetric start modules.
Johari just goes to show, BGG ratings don't mean everything. You can love a game, ratings be damned.
Absolutely!
Fun list! By the way, "Jack's Friends" sounds very similar mechanically to "Not Alone", which I think is getting an expansion, so I am guessing might be easier to get.
I was thinking the same thing! Not Alone is also available on Board Game Arena.
"It's a process." :) Love it!
