    Good luck Nobby! I've an MG4 for a few weeks now. Light in the back is a bit annoying and the lane keep assist can be a little finicky but otherwise absolute cracking car. Even before the money comes into it!

      Hya can you turn the LKA off using the app on your phone before you get in? I’m thinking early morning, coffee, get on app,heat battery and cabin and organise personal driving preferences. Also do you have to change your preferences back every single time you lock the car and return? Tia

    • @MUFC1933
      @MUFC1933 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also if you indicate does it turn off the LKA for that moment ? My Kia Niro first time I drove it I absolutely 💩 myself going past parked cars on main road . It kept pushing me back in, then I learnt to indicate which stops it.

    • @niallbenn

      @@MUFC1933 I don't you can do that level of preset before driving then car. You can do preheat alright though from app. You can open doors too. The LKA turns off when indicating so not an issue then.

    I reckon to get about 200 miles out of my Trophy in wintertime but this predicated on heating the battery with my charger for 30 minutes before starting out. I’m happy with my purchase so far.

  • @helenoliver3689
    @helenoliver3689 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Had my Trophy since beginning of Jan. Absolutely love it. Air-con adjustment - swipe down screen stays on. Few niggles - cabin doesn't heat up properly (as I think it should and as you noted), Lane Keep Assist - you do get used to it and realise when it's going to 'Kick Off' (so to speak). Cold snap in Uk..motorway .. (32 miles each way on drive to work) 2.X-ish miles/Kwh. Noticed more recently (now it's started to get warmer) 3.x (high X) going to work/driving around.
    I've also had to reset the infotainment sytem a number of times (Home button for 20-seconds ish), when, for eaxmple, you can't change radio volume. (Which is a pain but not a £5K+ minimum pain)
    For the price I don't believe it can be beaten (yet?!)

    • @NobbyOnCars
      @NobbyOnCars  ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm going from a Model 3 to the MG4 when they go on sale in Australia. Does the MG4 Trophy have the following - LFP battery (hope so), the equivalent of the Tesla phone-key for auto locking/unlocking, tyre pressure monitoring, frequent over the air software updates, speed limit recognition which automatically reduces speed when the speed limit drops, voice commands, a glass roof (I hope not), or a blindspot warning system? I expect for the price many of these features will be absent. Also, I hear the regen sadly doesn't allow one-pedal driving (like the Tesla does) - how do you find the regen? Thank you.

    • @NobbyOnCars
      @NobbyOnCars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regen ok but not one pedal. LFP only on smaller battery. Most of the safety you mentioned not standard. It’s a cool car but not sure it’s a match for a M3 to be honest.

  • @Joram0611
    @Joram0611 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review and well told honestly. One thing that a lot of reviewers don't mention, is that hardly any of the personal settings in your MG4 infotainment system, aren't remembered. You're driving 'profile' resets every time you turn off the car, so everything like your regenerative settings AC and the likes gets reset, meaning you have to re-enter those settings to your liking all the g*d d*mn time.
    I was incredibly stoked seeing the MG4 with it's superb handling, but the software (slow, a bit buggy, forgets lots of settings) definitely made me hold off on buying one. The plastic wheel caps on top of 17" alu-rims are a little weird, but considering the cost of the car it's kind of understandable.

    I had the same thing (but worse) with Adaptive Cruise Control. It would slow down massively for no reason (car in front at least 5 car lengths away), then go up a bit, then slow down... actually dangerous and scary in my test.
    The temp gauge is faulty (or the software). It's 5 degrees out, so your 25 is actually 20.
    CPU is better than ZS EV, but not by much. Still laggy.
    One Pedal Driving strength is brilliant (same as Tesla). Handles like a go-cart on the road.
    Cheap interior (meh). My test car was two days old and already had a driver door rattle though....

    I have the MG4 SR (in the same grey which I quite like). I have wondered about the range. Much less when cold. I have noticed it hovering around 2 miles per kWh (I'm in the UK although from Dublin). When I set off in the morning on the motorway if I reset the mileage after driving about 3 or 4 miles then I notice I'll get between 2.5 & 3 miles per kWh. So I guess it takes a while for the battery to heat up and then seems better in terms of efficiency. Looking forward to seeing an increase in the summer 🤞.

    Great review as always Nobby and good luck! You’re the first person, for me at least, to mention the ‘wireless sliding phone’ syndrome, the USB C Carplay and the aircon temp issues. The temp, the ACC braking and headlights staying on are an MG feature, not exclusive to the MG4, I have a 5 LR pre-facelift and you get used to it! I’m delighted with my EV, but I will never buy another one unless it has a rear wiper, rear armrest and physical buttons for the aircon. In fact, I believe that there should be legislation to reverse the trend for putting everything in the infotainment screen. It’s as bad as using your phone when driving.

      I can’t agree with you more on this matter. How is it safe to have to dig into a menu when your driving to turn up or down the heating or fans. I drove a new Fabia (loan car). Seriously, I had to put over to sort it out. 😊.

    • @MrGrentch
      @MrGrentch ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. Its kinda crazy where I can be (rightfully)pulled over and get a fine for looking at my phone, but digging through multiple menus on a big feckin' ipad stuck to the dash is OK, even encouraged by the manufacturers. As usual it's down to costs and margins. Prototyping, manufacturing and updating, even setting different trim levels and driving modes are _significantly- cheaper to do with a screen than manual controls. Even though they appear more "luxurious" to us.
      I suppose you get used to it. To be fair I drive a 90's car so it's a knob for everything, including the seat to steering wheel interface module. 😄

    When I'm starting in the morning it can be as bad as 2 miles per kWh on a cold day. It soon jumps up to 3. The longest trip I took gave me 4.7 miles per kWh which is crazy efficient and that's with the air con on. Generally, we're looking at 3.7 say. But I put my foot down at every opportunity but stick to speed limits to make of that what you will.

    Just to say , is there a decent quality build on this budget ev hatch ? October 3rd was driving up to green man roundabout from snaresbrook along hollybush hill , it was about 6. 55 am ,still a bit dark. Infront of me was a MG4 ,on a 23 plate displaying it's elongated rear lights . I couldn't help notice ( even though the rear hatch was closed and lined up correctly) that the rear drivers rear light setting was out of sink with the light bar that runs in-between the rear light fittings by a few centimetres, in other words bad quality build and looked wrong. This happens when the production line inspection or quality control officer at factory is substandard or went for a extended tea break . Just sayin.

    Hello Nobby. MG4 Trophy owner in the UK here. I’ve owned my car since December ’22. I have found, if using the heater, it has a huge impact on the range, especially if you are running it at 25°C 😬 In the cold (minus temperatures), I was lucky to get 2.4m/kWh. Now the temperatures are improving (8/12°C), then the range has improved 3.0 to 3.2m/kWh… With the heater/AC off you can easily achieve 4.5 to 4.8m/kWh, but obviously, you can still get misting issues. It is more efficient to use the heated steering wheel and heated seats than it is to try and heat the air in the cabin. UK models don’t have heat pumps fitted. I don’t know whether the cars delivered in Ireland do? 🤔 All in all, a fabulous car for the money, but my daughter has a Renault Megane E-Tech First Edition & that is FABULOUS. I have serious car envy with that car. It feels like getting out of a Rolls Royce and into a toy car between the two, but the Renault is MUCH more expensive of course.

    dead set on getting an electric car this year. this is top of my list (E-c4 and Megane etech are the other two i'm looking at) literally only two things I hate about this car are lack of rear vents, lack of rear headrest in the middle and no interior light in the back.
    The chinese really don't seem to like rear passengers. :/
    Apart from that it looks amazing.
    It does actually have alloys underneath those plastic wheels, they are there just for the aerodynamics. lot of electric cars do that.

      @@invictus_They-Them_Nazi_Hunter the “cheaper” aspect is really evident in the interior I feel. Also, not sure how true “better spec’d” is (in Ireland anyway). I’ve the entry level and it has heated seats/steering wheel, wireless CarPlay/android auto, folding mirrors, etc. These features are only available on the top level MG4. Having said that, the MG4 is more bang for your buck, and it’s a fantastic car offered at an incredible price (my dad has one). Personal preference, but still prefer the Megane Etech.

    I can't get my head around how fundamental design mistakes are made. In MG HQ these issues will have been discussed ad-nausium in meetings attended by highly paid experienced people, who come up with bizarre choices which are a detriment to safety.
    Their choices take us backwards not forward .
    These involve visibility and ease of use of controls.
    Often used controls should 'fall to hand' without taking your eyes off the road. These controls are now made difficult to find and use.
    No rear wiper is an unbelievable omission and betrays a worrying insight into corporate/designer/management mental illness problem.
    Some wil say 'rubbish you get used to it'. Yes you will, but getting used to it does not mean it's as easy or as quick to use as a competent design and it remains a driver distraction.
    MG...Reduce distractions, improve controls and visibility.

      There are some buttons on the steering wheel most reviewers miss. on the right side you can control like the radio, or press the star, and then you control temp and fans
      On the left side there is one too.... I can't remember what that controls as default, but you can go in and chose yourself what you want it to be a shortcut for - so there are options to control the most used things directly from the steering wheel.
      And at least there are SOME buttons, we could wish for more, but still better than tesla.

    If you have an electrical car you have to adjust your driving style to get the stated range I have a Leaf and have gotten more miles that the stated 168 you need to learn to drive electric and use your regeneration to get the best mileage. If you drive an electric car like a petrol car you will never get the stated miles it that simple and it does not matter what electric car you are in. The only way around it is to buy a bigger battery than you need so you can raz around to your hearts content if that's what you want to do
