Not particularly interested in MG but watched from start to finish. Jonny is hands down the best car reviewer on TH-cam or any medium for that matter 👌🏽
I wasn't interested in MG, just happened to pass the dealer after test driving Tesla's. I ended up with an MG5. Now I know that it's no Tesla and it's ugly, but it's not half the car either but it was half the price. If I had water in light fittings on my £24,000 MG I would take it back to the dealer, Tesla put their £50,000 car out as a demo. Really fancy an MG4 with the dual motors, what a street sleeper and how many embarrassed super car owners!
That is praise indeed for the MG5. Until the MG4 appeared, the MG5 would be at the top of my shopping list if I ever go full EV. Chinese MGs are used as Taxis for years. One even appeared frequently as a Taxi on the popular TV Series Doc Martin. That being an MG6 1.8 Petrol Turbo. According to some reports, MG6s used as taxis 200,000 miles is not unusual. The MG 6 is a far better car than many would have you believe for some reason when they first appeared on these shores. The Chinese having bought the IPRs of the MG Marque for relatively buttons, made an excellent job of their version of Rover's 1.8 turbocharged K-Series. Johnnie's enthusiasm comes over strongly for the MG4. Looks like I shall have to see for myself, ideally with actual "hands on" experience rather than the opinions of others who sometimes allow their bias and prejudice to distort and mislead.
not true whatsoever. that would violate the laws of physics. it's completely impossible that the batteries haven't degraded. they do. it's just your shitty on board computer that doesn't tell you the truth. you DO NOT have the same range.

I bought a 2nd hand ZSEV expecting some oddities and little issues. Non! It’s 2 years old, 20K, drive superbly, saves us £100+ a month in fuel, has lots of tech and the kids love the glass roof. The thing I added was a spare wheel and tint to the rear glass. Funnily enough we had a opportunity to hire a ID4 on hols and we were all pleased to be back in the ZSEV after, funny software in the VW and far more plasticity surfaces than a VW £50k should have. I a big fan now of SAIC (MG) 👍
No comparison between the id4 and szev the zs is one of the worst cars I’ve ever drove my ev van is better to drive. I agree the tech is decent level but the quality ect is not good and the range is awful
FWIW with our (great!) ZSEV ownership experience, and non-stellar time friends have had with VW, SAIC are on our future consideration list and VW just aren't.
We've had two Leaf's a MG ZS EV and a Tesla Model 3. We currently have the Model 3 and the ZS EV. With the exception of handling the MG is the best EV we've had. Yes, the Tesla is fast and handles well, but, for what it is and how much it cost the MG is an absolutely cracking EV. Ours is 2.5 years old and has been faultless and brilliantly built, better built than the Model 3. The ZS will.be replaced by the MG4, legacy manufacturers need to keep a close eye on MG.
As an MG Rover Mechanic. I love the brand owning many cars from this brand last being the MG Maestro Turbo. Really good to see the brand bouncing back 👌 Alan Partridge 🤣

24:26 I picked up a new style MG5 here in France this week…. It’s so good! No new car glitches, good panel fit, no rattles etc. The touch screen navigation and entertainment screen is very responsive. I made a point of not reading the user manual - everything is just evident - no surprises. And it goes well - the long range luxury version has all the toys and is certainly fast enough. Just back from the DIY store with 2.4m lengths of wood no problem!
Great video Johnny, you’re so right about the MG! We’ve had an MG5 for the last 6 months or so, and I really can’t fault it. I’m a petrol head at heart too, and was initially reluctant but this is honestly one of the best cars in terms of value, drive-ability and spec I’ve ever owned.
As many in the comments here had my ZS EV for a year now. Can't fault it. Did 13500 miles on £216 of electric according to my charger app. It's brilliant. Highly recommend any doubters to try one.
@@phuketexplorer that's the rub with these. To 'upgrade' I'd probably have to spend over 15 grand after part-ex. Unless changing anyway, saves money to actually stick with the current petrol/diesel car.

Hi Jonny, thanks for the presentation. I bought an ex demo MG5 Exclusive last October - my previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover with LPG conversion - lovely vehicle but began costing lots of money at each successive MOT. The MG5 has, so far proved to be faultless - the air conditioning is the best that I've experienced in any vehicle that I've owned in the past. Its completely unobtrusive in operation. I generally drive in 'economy' mode and max 'regen' mode. Recently, in the hot weather. it was returning 4.6 miles per kwh - I pay 21p per kWh on economy 7 so circa 4.7 pence per mile. The 12 month service cost £70 and that included cleaning inside and out and took about an hour. Have been thoroughly impressed with the car.
I have a Polestar, and I like the centre console. But I'm old, so it doesn't count. And this car here, is really significant and exciting. It's a huge step up in value for EV's. It's the first time an EV with "full" functionality has come out with a price hugely undercutting its obvious competition. The warranty is incredible. The 64 kWh is interesting. Are theses all the same across the manufacturers? Is it all CATL? I have a 69 kWh Polestar, which first came out with 64 kWh. And there are all the Korean 64 kWh too.
It's great the MG4 has V2L at this price because it will force pretty much all manufacturers into adding it. And I think that will make EVs in general just that bit more attractive compared with ICE vehicles especially for campers and people in areas that have frequent power cuts. I wonder what will happen with battery warranties for people who start using their vehicles every day as a home battery. Would reduce the lifespan of the battery but the warranties are based on mileage and time not number of charges/discharges.
mg4 51kwh model use LFP battery , that has longer lifespan then the mg4 64kwh model with Ternary lithium battery. lfp battery normaly had 2000 time charging cycle. so if you worry about it you can choose 51kwh model. battery warranties will ensure the degeneration of battery within 20% . if warranties out of date you can still use the rest 80%.
@@xiaoyang9758 Interesting thanks. I did wonder about whether it was LFP or not as I was watching the video. Car reviewers tend not to mention it and I think it's a pretty important consideration.
@@nitelite78 lot of people are watting mg4 here in china ,in china mg4 call MG MULAN. there already over 40000 per-order. and the price in china are not release yet. 😂😂
I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure there’s more to battery degradation than just charge discharge cycles. Those are just a quick ball park spec to give a rough idea of battery lifespan. The rate you charge and discharge the battery’s makes a huge difference. If you have a smart metre at home, you’ll probably see that most of the time your home is drawing 100s of watts, rather than a few kilowatt (a few thousand watts) which is what an EV consumes whilst cruising and even more when accelerating. Drawing power at a lower wattage general results in less heat. Roughly speaking, less heat = less degradation, so I can’t see people using there EV as a home battery make much difference to the lifespan of the pack. Especially considering you’d have to be trying really hard to drain the entire pack in a day just from your home. Like I say, I’m not an expert. Just a nerd whose been following EVs since 2014 😊 Edit: Just adding to my initial comment. For context on how much energy you use in a home,p vs an EV uses driving. Our Hyundai Kona takes about 12 hours to charge from empty to full drawing 7 kW most of the way. Again, roughly speaking (you need to account for losses in electricity transmission etc) that means to drain the entire 64 kWh battery in the Kona in a day, you’d need to sustain a 7 kW draw for around 9 hours. You are very unlikely to draw anything near that for half and hour, let alone 9.
At last a great looking car from MG! Ultra competitive against its rivals and has all the ‘toys’ you would ever need when driving from A to B. It’s a no bargainer Jonny!
Really good review, great to see cars like this that Hyundai used to offer. 5 years on from our Ioniq, this offers twice the range, faster acceleration and twice the charging speed for the same money. What's not to like?
As someone from the U.S., I’ll never see most of the cars you review. I really love seeing the beautiful countryside as you drive! The B roads I can’t get over. So narrow and hedges really close to the pavement. The cars are a nice touch, and your reviews of them are great!
Absolutely would drive an MG. Looks good and most importantly great value. Hopefully other manufacturers who've been pushing prices up for EVs will have to respond. Like you I think a new MG5 estate with sharper looks will be just the ticket. Like an e-Niro, only more car-ish

This is one of the best reviews of an ev or even a new car in general. I am going to have to seriously rethink what the brand actually means to me because I think sometimes we are nearly brainwashed into thinking certain brands mean More than they actually do mean
Keith, look at the better known customer satisfaction surveys to see what brainwashing ( or clever marketing) does. The so-called "prestige" brands are nowhere near the top, and the lesser perceived brands (such as Dacia and Skoda) are often way higher up the scale than your head suggests they ought to be......
The first good value family hatch EV I've seen - I see the BYD Atto 3 as it's natural competitor if and when that arrives. At that price/warranty it's hard to say anything against it. Plus they say for each 5k you drop in price, you double the number of prospective buyers. This should do well, the only real drawback is production numbers. How many rhd MG4s can they import, not nearly enough I imagine. Good review, Jonny.
As an owner of MG5 which is currently on 12k miles and I’ve owned a year to the date.. It’s still solid with no creaks or noises.. also to mention at its service last week the battery degradation was still at 100% which is great. Also to mention MG parent brand SAIC manufacture VW ID’s for Volkswagen for the Chinese market so they can’t be that bad!
well they made it right and at the right price point. the idea from all China brands is that they want you to not be brand concious and save your money for some other things in life. It is a lifestyle not a brand.
I enjoyed your unbiased appraisal of the MG4 Johny, and have to say that I was quite impressed which is very strange because I am not an EV fan! I know we responsible citizens should all be doing our bit for the environment, but from where I stand there are still too many obstacles and potential problems with buying and owning an EV! The biggest concern that most have, as I have learnt from friends is, 'charging', and how long it can take if a supercharger is not available! No matter, the MG4 is very nice and may have swayed me if it had been available in early 2022 when I traded in my old Jag for a newer one. Keep up the good work.
I see a lot of MG evs about where I live, near the old Longbridge plant, and although a new ev is way out of my price bracket, this car looks good enough to tempt the badge snobs away from their go to marques. A very fair and unbiased review. Well done sir.
Yeah, as long as there's decent mpg, the most environmentally friendly car is the one you already have, so I'll be doing the same (although my Ford's mpg is definitely rather less than 65!), but it's good to see what the future holds in store! I look forward to seeing this car on the roads, and eventually the 2nd hand market, and what it will hopefully do to the competition
@@EcceJack that’s not strictly true though. You can burn through enough fuel to match the CO2 of building a new car in 10,000 to 30,000 miles so it depends on how much you drive. Engineering Explained has run the numbers and made a good video on it.
@@EcceJack "most environmentally friendly car is the one you already" Not relevant anymore. The number of cars being manufactured has collapsed. You have no real way to effect the number of cars being scrapped and replaced. It is entirely up to the supply of cars available. Just because a singular person keeps their old car has negligible effect to all registered cars on the road. The less cars that are being manufactured, the longer old cars are kept.
Finally an EV with practical motorway range (able to go for almost 3h at 70mph after a quick rest stop) at a decent price. And it's not a SUV!!! Hurray!
I’ll be waiting for the performance model. I owned one of the last MGZS 2.5 V6 for 8 years and clocked 100k miles with no problems. A lovely car and was proud driving the MG. I wish I still had it.
Just ordered an MG4 Trophy after a fun test drive, to replace our 3yr old MG ZS EV. The ZS EV has been a brilliant car, and at the time it was best in class, but the MG4 is a big step up again! So, I'm really pleased with MG as a brand, good build quality (after 3 years the ZS EV shows no rattles or other aging signs), good reliability, good support from dealers - but now we can get excellent range and great styling too - and for the price, an absolute no brainer!!
Often thought of Kia and Hyundai when I read of the early sneery reviews of MGs. People laughed at the Kia Pride and Hyundai Pony years ago. Now look at those two. MG seems to have done this "brand growing" in an nth of the time.
I love the 17" wheels - VW needs to take a hint on this. Slightly smaller wheels let you go farther on a charge, all else being equal. RWD is awesome! If it had a volume knob and a slightly shallower "plinth" for the shift knob - it was pretty close to your left knee. Having the space for your leg is a god-send for us taller folks - I am 6'-4"/~173cm and center consoles are the bane of too many cars.
I had a 2014 MG3 for 2 years and it definitely felt cheap but no more cheap than the likes of a Corsa for example. Definitely great "bang for your buck". My only complaint was that it needed a new clutch at 40k miles which seemed premature to me... People like to slate them still because "they're not a real MG" and they're made in china but the "real" MGs had their faults and Volvo are chinese these days so I really don't see the issue. Great review
Tell me if put A. a small petro engine that could charge EV instead of plugging in would that not be better? B. Put a row or several rows of turbines on the roof that turn from the wind that would charge the car? Possibly magnetically accellerated faster than the wind but wind gets them moving
Yeah I had a 2017mg3 for about 2 years, was going to need a new clutch too, but everything else was spot on. I swapped it to a micra even though it was a better quality car and better mpg while being faster having a turbo...I missed the mg3 compared too. It was a bargain as well! I really do think it is the..'its Chinese' So I'm gonna hate it with every review being biased. I even test drove an mg6 and loved that too, handled well while being as comfy as my rover 75
I would honestly have no problem buying an MG and don’t see the badge as any less than a Kia, Hyundai or Renault and I’d certainly rather this than a Peugeot or a Vauxhall. If you’re buying a car - for the purpose of being a car, why not? Different matter if you want performance or a toy perhaps, but st that money it’s no more than an equivalent spec ICE family hatch. Looks smart, well equipped and if it drives well enough, I see this as a decent family car/commuter if you can have a toy for the driving you actually want to do.
The best review yet of the MG4 👏👏 no faff , just honest observation, as always , top draw sir ! Yes we brits are badge snobs , but this is on the change in these cash tight times. I too dont 'get' the ID3 , looks and feel cheep inside , and bland outside.
Initial reaction, I’d pick this over an ID.3, Zoe, e corsa, e208 etc in a heartbeat. Why spend the extra when you don’t have to? Brand loyalty = Consumer stupidity IMO. I think this could be the most important car to launch in Europe this year. Will wait for some more reviews to say for sure though. I’m particularly looking forward to Bjorn Nyland putting it through its paces 😊
I currently drive a 40kw Leaf and really like it but would absolutely drive the MG4. I would also choose it over an ID3. The Leaf was not compared in this video, not a surprise because first impressions, its better in almost every way, and for less money.
Cupra born is bigger inside than the MG or the Kia E Niro. Cupra infotainment is a bit laggy on start up but works well. The MG does look very different "taking" design ideas from other cars. If you want a large family EV the ID3 and Cupra Born beat all other cars but cost a bit more. Pity the KIA wasn't bigger inside as I like the look and KIA's are built very well. I bought a Cupra Born V2 62kwh as it suited my family needs. MG would have been in the running if I didn't need the interior leg room.
Currently driving a Toyota Hybrid which is great but, I would seriously consider this if moving over to full electric….interested in the seating position as I prefer at my age a higher position for ease of getting in and out…..GREAT REVIEW 👍
Good review. Plenty of information. Personally, I'd never pay more for a badge. Reliability and build quality yes, but I'd always go for the value option. The likes of VW should be getting very nervous.

Hi Jonny. Just about to order a white SE standard range so your excellent review helped a lot. One thing that reviewers are missing though is the battery chemistry for the standard range (LFP) and long range (NMC). As most EV users actually do relatively short journeys, the standard range LFP that can happily charge from 0% to 100% all day long would generally be sufficient for every day use. Even using fake WLTP figures, 100% of 218 miles is 218 !!. However where the long range NMC battery should only be charged to 80% on a routine basis, you end up with a similar "actual" WLTP figure of 224 miles (281 X 80% = 224 miles).Charging an NMC battery to 100% on a regular basis apparently damages the cells. Also the LFP battery has a far greater charge cycle count than the NMC battery. When I fist test drove the MG4 I too thought that a long range SE was the sweet spot but now i'm not so sure. Unless you are regularly going to do road trip level miles, I can't see any reason why the standard range SE would't be the sweet spot for most peoples daily needs. The fake WLTP situation has just replaced the fake MPG figures for ICE cars and i think manufactures dealers and indeed reviewers are missing the opportunity to finally inject some true clarity into the actual mileage that EVs will do and in fact what EV drivers are doing on a daily basis. Unless that is i'm completely missing something. Anyhooo, thanks for a great informative video.
I do tend to agree with you. I’ve had an MG5 for two years and it was a wonderful car. I’ve traded in for an MG4 SE standard range. It’s a lovely vehicle. Totally different from the MG5. However, so far my miles per KWH in the cold weather have been a bit disappointing at 2.8. I’m sure this will improve massively as temperatures rise. For most people, the standard range car is more than enough. It is very rare that I do a trip of 200 miles. When I have done, rapid charging hasn’t been a problem using reliable chargers like Instavolt. I’m not sure that for most people, it’s worth paying £3.5K more for a long range battery. I may be wrong, but, not for me.
Really interesting. I might have opted for the long range battery had I not known this, but it sounds like the NMC would be the way to go for my kind of mileage.
I think the comparison with the early Japanese and Korean cars is valid. Ignore MG at your peril. Great review. And good pheasant and grandfather clock content... something sadly missing from the yoof reviewers 😅
As Jonny says, MG feels like a value brand to me. But that's a hell of a discount compared to its competitors. Kudos to Jonny for being frank about his own prejudices, I think I'm with him on this one. With a challenging financial mess ahead for the next couple of years, I think more people will forego the brand snobbery, especially as those brands often fail to earn our custom. Is MG the new Skoda or Kia? 🤔
Since getting my Renault Zoe in 2020, I’ve not had much trouble with finding charging points. By the way, Tesco at Brookfield Shopping Centre has new 75KwH charging points in the car park.
The important thing about the Standard Range model is that it has LFP battery chemistry which can be cycled 10 times more than the usual NMC batteries. They are less energy dense but can be packed more tightly as they are not so thermally delicate. Recent Standard Range Tesla Model 3s use them. That is why the MG4 Standard Range SE does not need the cooling slats at the front. They are safer and generally preferred by the Chinese manufacturers. As they are heavier they are suited to buses and stationary batteries. They are a bit cheaper and less dependent on geopolitical problem areas for the ingredients. Ford are investing heavily in LFP going forward with their large scale committment to EVs
I like it! I wish they were available in the US. Sounds like a great set of features and excellent range. As a multiple electric car owner, I agree with your assessment about the range here being ideal.
@@michalandrejmolnar3715 Except for Polestar 1 probably? But other polestars would be built in North Carolina afterwards... Good for US jobs anyways I guess
Another great review! I think this is a game changer, proving just how overpriced the VWs and Cupras are, even Kia I think people want a range of 300 miles for a reasonable price I don't know if I want one, but I'm interested in what the rest of the industry will do in response. At least there are some interestig EVs coming out, for a reasonable price without a load of silly gimmicks
Great video once again! As an MG enthusiast it’s great to see some great interest in the MG brand once again. This looks like a great car and I’m very much looking forward to the next MGs using this platform.
I love my MGs (ZT and TF) also owned a SAIC MG6 previously, all great cars. My son also has an MG ZT, his girlfriend has an MG3 and her dad has just bought a facelift MG3 too as he was so impressed with the value they offer. Looking forward to something sporty from them in future - even though the new cars are all way out of my price range!
If SAIC is going to accord the same respect to the MG brand as Geely has the Volvo badge, and there's every reason to think SAIC will, MG's second wind is probably going to be a long, successful one.

Sounds brilliant Can you please set out a 12 month retrospective cost reconciliation Include lease purchase costs Insurance Service cost Total running costs How long is the warranty ( extendable at what cost to ten years) Thanks a great deal
Great review, this is exactly the car I have been waiting for. I love the Ioniq5 but it’s too expensive. I have a Golf and that form factor is so practical, this MG does look like an great EV option.
That looks a really great option. If they can make MG4s for that price range then hopefully we can have smaller, compact, lower range cars for under £20K
@markyes brand new fix started this month. 2.45p per mile. Be an idiot not to be on an ev tariff with an ev. Battery will last longer than you'll likely own the car 15 years to 80% typically. Still far cheaper than petrol at 30-40p/mile and I spend less leasing my 'shit' mg than I'd be paying on petrol on any non electric and it's a fraction the monthly cost of a tesla
Nice review, but I wasn’t sure what you meant at 24:13 (prob because I’ve never driven an electric car). Also, why does the spoiler on the Trophy decrease the range? I thought the point of spoilers was to make a car more aero, not less?
Thanks for not calling it "affordable" or "cheap" Jonny, You're the only one not doing that, too. Reviews which do that for £25,000+ (and more, even approaching £40,000) cars incense me.. Our last new car was less than £10,000. I've done the numbers on the lower running costs but all that does is prove once again that you need money to make or save money. I like Robert Llewellyn because he used to be Kryten but You're my favourite reviewer of EVs.
MG have been making silent but great moves lately and I believe this is the start of the brands revival in Europe. I'm glad to see the MG brand back, such a great marque that was squandered and as now as an EV it brand couldn't be more perfect.
Honestly sounds like a brilliant car for the price. Vehicle to load is the key thing that most are missing & I think the big differentiator over the next few years. Get this, you don't need a £10k home battery.
On EV-database it says it's vehicle-to-load but not vehcile-to-home, so not quite replacing home batteries yet. I.e. with an adaptor you can run a three pin socket from the car's charging port but you can't plug it in to your home charger and run the whole house. But hopefully V2H will come soon.
Excellent review and a good insight. Couple of items you missed: - the Trophy gets a raised floor in the boot as an extra option. Why you'd want to lose the extra space is beyond me, but hey, whatever you're into! - the Trophy also gets storage slots on the back of each front seat for rear passengers. Minor item but useful. - tow rating of 500kg across the range: excellent! - no roof rack: the one item that stops it from becoming a direct competitor to the Niro EV. Lastly, and related to the last statement: the new Niro EV is €11,000 MORE than the Trophy MG4 in Ireland. Wow...... Personally, I'd love all the spec of the Trophy model, but in the long-range SE body so allow the maximum range........ Deposit is down and still time to decide
Jonny pretty much spot on review my only comment would be Im not convinced on the range argument. Why buy a car that costs 2k more if you simply don't need that range day to day, especially if you factor in its a family car then a long run with kids means stopping at services etc for food mid journey so just charge then for those one offs. With the above it then comes down to economics how many years would it be that you would pay more for fast charging over home charging the bigger battery remembering that the fast charge would be to top up not be the whole journey, minus the additional wear on tyres etc carry the extra weight. Same argument could be why buy a golf, get a golf estate for the 2-3 skip runs you do a year.
I can actually see myself driving this, quite a fan of the ID3 and was at the time the only EV I would have considered but the MG4 looks so much better, the interior is quite familiar to my C4 Cactus very minimalist, I think MG are going to be the king's of EV very soon, another great review Mr Smith.
It was this review that persuaded me to buy an MG4 SE LR. However, after ordering I learnt the LR has NMC batteries rather than LFP (used in the Standard Range) and this wasn't mentioned in the review. The review also doesn't mention the driver aids (LKA etc) behaviour which is pretty poor, to the extent I always turn them off. The software is buggy and updates (not OTA) are problematic. The rear plastic undertray warps and cracks. There is now a fix (a support bar) but it took 2 years to become available. Rear visibility is restricted and the SE specs don't get a reversing camera. Nonetheless, I am enjoying the drive immensely and all the essentials on my car work.
I'd happily have the top spec of this instead of a base model i.d3 thanks Johnny. Yeah I am cheap like that. I think we are paying way too much for a badge sometimes. Currently driving a good ol' Kia e Niro FE. 😊
Thanks for a great review. Most comprehensive one of the MG4 that I've seen so far. Got my MG4 SE Long Range on order, going to seem a very long wait ! :-)
That's the first EV I've seen that I actually like the look of. I think when it has the mentioned switchable battery pack it'll clean up on the volume EV market.
It's unlikely there will be any "switchable" battery packs. There are two big issues. 1. What happens to your 8 year battery warranty if you have it "switched"? 2. After the switch, how could you be sure you didn't end up with someone else's abused battery? Battery swapping stations would be unviable to operate. They would need to be open 24/7, and be at least double manned for H & S reasons. They would need to keep dozens of different types and capacities of battery packs, fully charged, and in stock to cater for the different models of EV..... It's not happening anytime soon. Tesla dropped the concept of battery swapping in 2013, in favour of their Supercharger network, which can add 75 miles of range for every 5 minutes the car is hooked up to the charger. Increased charging infrastructure and faster charging times will render battery swapping pointless.
@@Brian-om2hh I wasn't talking about "battery swapping stations", we're talking having user swappable 'suitcase' batteries that you swap out at home, have one set charging on a wall charger in your home whilst the other set is in the car. No need for a driveway or garage or for cables trailing out into the street. You underestimate how many (city) drivers don't have these things.
I have put a deposit on the mg4 se lr. Today but I got to wait till January 2023 till estimates delivery So I have instructed MG to give me a 2023 23 plate when I receive it in march 2023. That’s a long wait. But it gives me time to get an ev charging box attached to the garage. Good entertaining informative thoughtful programmes. Thanks
Living in southeast London, we hardly need a car. We have offroad parking and could easily install charging point. But relatives in North Wales, Cornwall, Dorset means we need to go 250 miles each way with few to no charging facilities up there (or in place but not functioning), often with 3 to 5 adults plus DIY gear to do work on relatives' houses. Budget of £12k expanded by £6k by relatives who need our visits. Got 2018 diesel Galaxy - it's ULEZ compatible. I'd ditch the car and rent when needed but wife wants a car
Really great review. These MGs are making me really consider one for the next car. I am still concerned that I many do motorway driving and over 400 miles per week but I have a drive and home every night.
Swapping my Peugeot e-208 GT for a Long Range SE. I prefer the looks of the Peugeot inside and out, but it appears that the MG4 betters it in every other measurable way (and for less money!) Fantastic detail in your review as ever 👏🏻
Mrs Vanya has owned a ZS EV for 2 years. It has been excellent value and good to drive. Only one issue in 10k, the batteries in the key fob had some corrosion, replaced by the dealer immediately.
Had many VWs over the years, but can't help feeling that VW have lost the plot with the ID3 - the launch was a mess and the well documented software bugs were a big deterrent to buying one. I think the MG4 is more than able to hold its own against the VW. I've been watching the EV market for the last 5 years, wanting to make the jump. The MG4 did it for me - just taken delivery of a Trophy. Given the price, I think the top spec Trophy makes sense - it has a bit more equipment, including a better sound system and the part-vinyl seats look better. Only downside is the slight reduction in range. Thanks for the review - it helped decide to take the plunge 😃
Had my mg5 for a couple of years now. Saved thousands compared to petrol, had no problems and not noticing any drop in range. Been really good value so far.
As always, loving Jonny's honesty. I guess most people felt the same about MG originally. Brand snobbery is still a thing, but that's changing with the dynamics of the Pacific rim manufacturers. Traditional Western producers are going to have to change quickly, or they'll go to the wall.
I've been looking at a BEV ever since I was able to join the fleet scheme at work. Sadly, the prices have all gone up since I started six months ago and even the ID.3 has gone from doable to too expensive. But the MG4 is definitely on the fringes of affordable. I've got to say, the Chinese have done a good job on this one, I like how it looks, it has useful levels of kit and it seems it'll be the ideal commuter car. I've booked a test drive, I'm keen to see just how nice it is for myself.
Nice to hear someone praising value when it counts, MG are really trying to make electric , and environmentally friendly cars affordable for the mass market sector, even though it is still obscene compared to some peoples living’s standards in our world today.
What is the warranty and how long will it last ? have a 2011 and 2014 Gasoline/Petrol cars, I am old, we drive few miles. My I phones last 3-4 years max. Longevity and depreciation ???
MG have really had an amazing rise over the last few years and the current product is great and gets better with every launch. They are also positioning themselves to grab a sizeable share of the market in coming years. It may not be the MG of old, but it’s great to see the brand doing well and leading the way in affordable EV’s for the masses. Proof that you can offer the consumer value and be successful - something most car manufacturers have forgotten in the pursuit of ever higher margins.
Another stellar and in-depth review which I really appreciate, you always cover what any prospective buyer would want to know and the ones we forget to ask. Totally would buy an MG, build and components look mid range in comparison to other manufactures but what swings it for me is the spec being so good for something that price especially with the future proofing.
Great review Jonny as ever. In answer to your question in the video, i would much prefer to drive something like this vs an ID3 at the price point. If i was going down the EV route (which i will be in about 18 months), MG is a brand i'd give serious consideration to. It's great value for money by the looks of it, decent design and the interior really does it for me. As someone who has a few other cars for my weekend fun, i could well see myself in this as a daily. Like you mention at the end, me 8 years ago would have gone for a badge that looks cool (Audi, BMW), but i'm just not convinced by those brands when it comes to EVs or quality anymore. I think i'd now prefer a top spec "lesser" badge than a rubbish spec "top" badge.
Great videos Johnny but I've started watching the intro then skipping to the end. Any chance you could do a 3 minute version of these for us that just want to catch up during a work break? ^David.
I sell these and love them. I have come from Volvo and a decent spec Volvo EV is over £50k. The trophy is about £31k. I love Volvo but I would buy an MG4 great car!!! Great video.

How much does a two year old one cost?
Felt the same about an ID3 I had a go in. Overly complicated software and disappointingly plasticky for the money. Glad I’ve got the ZSEV

Another honest, unbiased review Jonny. I like the finer details you get into, the level of finish within the boot area. No one else would pick up on these things. Top man!
Go live in china then !!!
V2L just powers individual devices, via a 3-pin plug
V2H is what you need to feed power from the car battery into a house, via a special charger.
mg4 51kwh model use LFP battery , that has longer lifespan then the mg4 64kwh model with Ternary lithium battery. lfp battery normaly had 2000 time charging cycle. so if you worry about it you can choose 51kwh model. battery warranties will ensure the degeneration of battery within 20% . if warranties out of date you can still use the rest 80%.
Just a nerd whose been following EVs since 2014 😊
Edit: Just adding to my initial comment.

I read somewhere that MG UK have secured around 2000 models for delivery before the end of 2022. 👍
That must be why some copying has been going on. 😜
well they made it right and at the right price point. the idea from all China brands is that they want you to not be brand concious and save your money for some other things in life. It is a lifestyle not a brand.
I tested an MG5 and thoroughly liked it. The MG4 may very well be my next car. Thanks for the great review!
Absolutely I'd drive that. But I'll stick with my 13 year old diesel Volvo that does 65mpg until it goes to the big scrapheap in the sky.
I am in the same boat with my Fiat Stilo JTD.
If you want the ultimate smug face then convert your current ICE car to an EV.
Well done review of this MG, I just saw the Fully Charged review of the same car and this was miles better!
You are right, tall people don't want big consoles - let's celebrate the flat floor car chassis with more open cabin design.

I really do think it is the..'its Chinese'
So I'm gonna hate it with every review being biased.

Amazing EV imo. And at a reasonable price! Really considering getting the top spec model!
Have had the ZS EV for nearly a year and everyone in the family uses it whenever they get the chance, an all-around favorite. Great car.
I think I now know what our next car will be. Even the charge point is in the right place for when reversed up the drive. Brilliant!

That looks a really great option. If they can make MG4s for that price range then hopefully we can have smaller, compact, lower range cars for under £20K

Air conditioning on Jonny? You OK?
Honestly sounds like a brilliant car for the price. Vehicle to load is the key thing that most are missing & I think the big differentiator over the next few years. Get this, you don't need a £10k home battery.
On EV-database it says it's vehicle-to-load but not vehcile-to-home, so not quite replacing home batteries yet. I.e. with an adaptor you can run a three pin socket from the car's charging port but you can't plug it in to your home charger and run the whole house. But hopefully V2H will come soon.
Shop around, and you'll find that £10k home battery is probably nearer £6k
Excellent review and a good insight.
Couple of items you missed:
- the Trophy gets a raised floor in the boot as an extra option.
Great content as usual. I’m so apprehensive about the EV jump but your essential videos will always guide the way.
A worthy successor to the MG Magnette. Should sell extremely well..
I can totally see myself owning one of those, if they age well and finance options are good in a few years, this might be my first electric car
Thanks for a great review. Most comprehensive one of the MG4 that I've seen so far. Got my MG4 SE Long Range on order, going to seem a very long wait ! :-)
How long are the wait times?
Would I like the Pug if I was younger or is it a sign of my age? Who cares, they are making nice looking cars IMO.
I might swap my Corsa-e for a MG4 next year. I'm unsure if Stellantis can beat the MG4.
Agree. The MG4 does hold its own against an ID3 which (to be frank) is average at best as a car made by a 'premium' brand.
Go live in china then !!!
Go live in china then !!!
Great videos Johnny but I've started watching the intro then skipping to the end. Any chance you could do a 3 minute version of these for us that just want to catch up during a work break? ^David.
What I said, above... 🤣
I sell these and love them. I have come from Volvo and a decent spec Volvo EV is over £50k. The trophy is about £31k. I love Volvo but I would buy an MG4 great car!!! Great video.
Excellent review, cheers Jonny. Love your level of detail and knowledge of the actual competition, and how honest you always are.
