- Second project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! These videos will be a great guide to making beautiful, scrappy quilts. My goal is to use up some of the strips that have accumulated in my lifetime of quilting!
One block is made of an "A" Set and a "B" Set. Each block will use about 1 1/2 strips.
"A" Sets are made from one fabric strip and include: one square 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", two rectangles 2 1/2" x 6 1/2", and two rectangles 2 1/2" x 10 1/2".
"B" Sets are made from a different fabric than "A" and include: two squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and two rectangles 2 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Make as many blocks as you like using any color combination that you like! Imagine it in Halloween Fabrics! Oh no...now I want to make another one using Halloween fabrics!
Baby quilt: 40" x 50", 4 x 5 setting, 20 blocks uses 30 strips or around 2 1/4 yards of fabric
Kid quilt: 50" x 70", 5 x 7 setting, 35 blocks uses 53 strips or around 3 3/4 yards of fabric
Lap quilt: 60" x 80", 6 x 8 setting, 48 blocks uses 72 strips or around 5 yards of fabric
Twin quilt: 70" x 90", 7 x 9 setting, 63 blocks uses 95 strips or around 6 3/4 yards of fabric
Double quilt: 80" x 100", 8 x 10 setting, 80 blocks uses 120 strips or around 8 1/3 yards of fabric
Queen quilt: 90" x 110", 9 x 11 setting, 99 blocks uses 148 strips or around 10 1/2 yards of fabric
King quilt: 120" x 120", 12 x 12 setting, 144 blocks uses 216 strips or around 15 yards of fabric
1 jelly roll will make a baby size quilt.
2 jelly rolls will make a kid or lap size quilt.
3 jelly rolls will make a twin or double size quilt.
4 jelly rolls will make a queen size quilt.
6 jelly rolls will make a king size quilt.
This block was first shared in our May 2022 Block of the Month as a bonus block. See the link below for the original video.
• BLOCK #5 for our 2022 ...
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I will ALWAYS have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!

please continue with 2 1/2" series.
I love watching these videos! It's so very cool to watch how you use all of those 2.5" strips. Thank you!
Both pretty and easy. I love it.
This series is invaluable. Although this particular pattern is a bit more than I'm ready to tackle, I love the format and real time camera work as you run through the technique. Most other quilting tutorials show the viewer one time in real time, and then blast loud music and race through the technique "for all four corners" or until you "reach the end" type teaching, assuming that you got the technique with just one view. I am binge listening to all the series. I learn so much as far as pressing seams, pinning blocks pieces, and most of all, efficient approach to about just about every step. Thank you from a beginning quilter.
So glad you are enjoying. Thank you so much!
23:59 I'm from Texas and have been quilting only since i retired about 10 yrs. Iwas taught not to waste anything so i make baby quilts and string and log cabin. I love this and was trying to decide what to start now. You helped me decide. The only problem I had was thinking you were saying black instead of block and couldn't quite figure out where you were putting the black.....guess I missed the Texas drawllllll lol
The comment about the 2002 fabric made me laugh as I just recently completed a UFO quilt whose fabric I had purchased in 1993 according to the yellowed receipt for the fabric found in the work in progress bag I had put it in so long ago. Time flies when you are having fun. Love your site. Thank you!
Congrats on using that fabric
It’s beautiful, I love it. Great job on it.
Thank you! 😊
I LOVE scrappy quilts! Everything always goes together.😊
Thank you for the detailed instructions and various sizes. Your videos are assuring quilting will continue for generations to come. What a wonderful legacy ❤
thank you. I really enjoy seeing all the creative various ways to use up scraps. I'm inspired to dig through some scraps.
What a great video series! I'm really enjoying it. The simplicity and the gentle positive get it done attitude are all inspiring. Plus I love your sweet voice! Thanks so much for this series!
Oh the quilt is so pretty
I DO love the use of scraps for the binding, tying in the colors to the quilt area
This was great! I loved the binding idea too! Leave nothing to waste!
Nice orderly way to make blocks
Great Organization ..so efficient.
So organized, so orderly, so inspiring. watching from Manila. Thank u.
Not only a nice and helpful series, but the voice-over is very calming. Thanks for the video 😊
So nice of you
thank you for this great idea
Thank you for this really great pattern using scraps.
Great quilt!!! I am there with you for fabrics 20 plus years old in the stash!!!!!!!! LOL xxx
What a great result -- especially the binding!
I absolutely love this block!
I love it . Thank you and now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to my sewing room to dig through those scraps 😉
I love how you calculate how much fabric each of these projects uses! It’s a great reminder of what a resource our scraps are. We paid just as much for our scraps as we did for the fabric we used in the “first” quilt!
Incidentally I use buff colored masking tape and a sharpie to mark my black positions. The masking tape stays on but doesn’t damage the fabric. The sharpie stays on the tape and doesn’t rub off on the fabric.
A nice alternative to the jelly roll race & still use up the plethora of strips..thanks for the idea .
What a great looking quilt. Whenever I watch a tutorial, I am unsure what the quilt will look like. But so far, every quilt looks fabulous, even if the individual blocks aren’t my favorite. Thanks very much for your tutorials. They are very I structional.
I’m not usually a high contrast lover but this came out so bright and fun for young kids, I really like it! Your verbal explanations are very well done! I’m enjoying your videos!
I love the idea of using up orphan strips to make them into beautiful quilts. The past two quilts have been very eye-catching so I can't wait for your next idea to use up scrap fabric.
Modern simple design and effective use of fabrics, a winner 🏆 🥇 ❤
Good idea need to make charity quilts. Gonna use this
You have a great eye for selecting strips that blend well together.
Thank you!
I Love this Quilt! How FUN is this one!?!

Brilliant
It’s beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Fantastic! I love this use of scraps. ❤❤❤
Love your blocks! Beautiful. The tip of using safety pins for your rows is a good one. Your video is informative. TY
Beautiful quilt and a clever way to use up scraps.
Love Love Love this series. Thank you so much
This was another great tutorial for using up all those leftover strips we all have! And I really appreciate your fabric estimates for the different sizes of quilts; it will be very useful to me in pulling my scrap strips. Thank you so much! I´m looking forward to the rest of your series!
Great color sense!
Thank you for such a beautiful in-depth tutorial showing those who are uncertain in choosing colours, fabric designs. Beautiful blocks
Nicely done.
Looks great and easy pattern to make. Using up strips out of the scrapbox is a good idea. Thanks.
Loved this video. So clearly presented.
Very pretty
Good idea using pins, ❤
Liking the simplicity of this block
I’m a visual learner and this block in block has always interested me. Watching your assembly has unlocked a stumbling block and now I feel like I can produce something. I learned to quilt 25 years ago at a great little quilt shop (log cabin) but have a bad, bad habit of overthinking what I want to do and how to go about it. Thank you and I’ve subscribed!
PLEASE, PLEASE …
At beginning of your videos SHOW WHAT THE FINISHED QUILT LOOKS LIKE AT THE BEGINNING OF ALL VIDEOS 😮Thanks! I’m new to quilting and I’d like to see finished quilt before needing to-watch the entire video or to not need to scroll through. Great directions!😊
Thank you for watching. So glad you are joining the quilting community. I wish you all the best as you learn the craft. One thing you can do with the video is simply drag the progress bar to whatever part of the video you want to see. Hope this helps, and Happy Quilting!
Thank you for your video .I think I will give it a go but make a nice big bag
So pretty! I use scrappy pieces for my binding quite often when its a FUN quilt!!
Clever way to use up strips. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
This would be a great idea for a Linus quilt for a preterm boy. Thank you for sharing!😃😃😃😃
It's helpful to see how you cut and organize your stripes and so them together. Thank you for this tutorial.
Thank you so much for a very informative video. I've been wanting to make one of these. I love your teaching style
Wow.. that's beautiful art.. Thank you for the great work.. I am a beginner in quality, I find this video very helpful 👍👍👍
Beautiful quilt and clear, easy instructions! Really enjoying your channel.
I love the backing you made. It's a beautiful quilt. Thank you.❤
I’m so glad I stumbled on your “channel” . I love this quilt and can’t wait to start on one myself!
I love this series so much thank you for doing it. I can’t wait to get out my box of 2 1/2 inch strips again this month.
I love watching you sew , I’m sitting here with a cast on my left arm and this is giving me my sewing fix .😂
What an amazing morning , all these beautiful but so easy quilts well done ladies, I'm so envious 😄
I did a similar block in blue and white but starting with yardage. Half with blue in the center and half with white in the center. Chain piecing was incredibly easy and loved the fact that there was no matching on the rows.
I add the batting and backing to each block separately then simply attach them together using a zigzag stitch to connect them. much easier!!!!
You have created such a colourful quilt 🤩 It will brighten up any bedroom 👏👏🇬🇧
I am just finishing a quilt using these blocks. It is called " hip to be square" . done in black, white and gray. With bright colors foe the centers. I love how you did this with scraps!
I’d like to see a photo of that! I love B&W and crayon colors together. They make wonderful baby quilts!
Very nice good idea using the strips
I am going to do this…thanks so much👍🏻
I love the quilt. You can make small numbers and put these on your pins. Especially good for the 5 to 8 rows. I use paper scraps and make a hole with the pin.
❤ lovely enjoyed watching x thank you for sharingxx😊
Thanks for the motivation and great ideas.
I did the same for the binding
Love watching your videos. Great ideas and love these blocks!!!!!!
