  • Hebrews 10:25 says to not forsake the gathering of ourselves together, and most believers think they're doing this simply by going to church. But not does going to church not fulfill this command, but today's church is nothing like what the Scriptures say. In this excerpt, Kevin challenges the traditional concept of church as "worship and the word" with the true, biblical purpose for the gathering of the believers.

The Biblically Correct Podcast is a ministry of Perfect Word Ministries. Our goal is to equip both Jewish and Gentile believers in Yeshua through sound, Scriptural exhortation to uphold God’s word as their solely authoritative standard for life in Messiah. Our vision is to provide teachings from a Messianic Jewish perspective that promote Yeshua-centric, scriptural principles and values, and confront unbiblical beliefs that are hostile to the Scriptures. We value the Scriptures-from the Torah to the New Covenant Writings-above all religions and traditions of man, not to disesteem those traditions, but to elevate the perfect word of God.

The writer of Hebrews begins this passage in Chapter 10 (and Hebrews in general) by pointing to Yeshua (worship). Even the few verses before vs. 25 lay the groundwork. "19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith..." The writer is anchoring all other aspects of Godly living with assurance in the One who is worthy.
I would argue that the ultimate purpose of the church IS worship. I Peter 2:9 (among many other passages) points to this directly -- "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." We, as the church, are to proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out. Yes, we are to exhort, encourage, build up the Body of Christ.., but this is not the end, it is the means. We are to do this so we may worship Him more fully and share the message of the Kingdom of God to all peoples. Worship is eternal and I believe the primary purpose of the believer and the church.
It is only through worship ("fixing our eyes on Yeshua" Her 12:2) that we can effectively build each other up in Christ. If the church's focus is primarily on fellowship or accountability or other people without first recognizing the One who is to be praised above all, our interaction is little more than a social club or help group. I can be encouraged and even serve others in Kiwanis; I can be held accountable in AA and the like. But the church's primary purpose, its reason for existence isn't about people in the first place, it is about God and bringing His glory. "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Col 3:16)
    Take care and God bless.
