  • I recently visited the East Coast for a GM sponsored introduction to the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. In addition to driving the Turbo 1.4L Cruze, I was also able to drive the Toyota Corolla S and Honda Civic for comparison. As always, I was very rushed and I apologize for the sloppiness that is my video style. Hopefully you are able to get something from this. A written review will be forthcoming. General Motors covered my expenses to attend this media preview.

    I love how the front sort of wraps around onto the doors like the some of the other cars I saw back in the late 90's from Buick, I really like that style.

    I got to test drive one yesterday, very impressive car and the 1.4 turbo is surprisingly responsive and fun to drive.

    I had a demonstrator car given to me by GM for a week. I had the LT model (European version), with the 1.8 petrol with auto box. And I have to say, I concur with everything you've said in this video. The build quality is fantastic - especially when you look at the list price for the car. I was expecting a hideously plasticky Daewoo to turn up, but what you get is a car with an absolutely brilliant ride, virtually zero road noise around town, and a well-built interior...

    @Sebytro glad to hear you enjoyed the test drive. i based my opinions on plastics on the civic and corolla for comparison, the cobalt and chevy's equinox which was a shuttle vehicle. the cruze beat all of them. i felt the dash cap on the cruze was superior to the equinox because it wasn't as glossy, had more of a premium matte finish. having said that, certainly the dash cap could be soft touch, etc. but i am sure that GM is leaving some tricks up its sleeve for the higher end buick version.

    I also took a Cruze for test drive yesterday. I agree with you in mostly everything you said. To be honest the plastic interior isn't that nice though. I took it for a rougher test drive, as I wanted to experience the technical part rather than the looks of the car. The suspensions were incredible, especially in tight corners where it stayed on its feet very well. Acceleration was amazing for a 1.4.
    Overall I really liked this car and I hope you got a good test run with it :)

    i test drove one of these car today for my dad, i was extreamly impressed! standard 10 airbags alot of these options are standard unlike the camery, civic etc. my dad is look for a manule wierd thing about the manules on the curze is 1. its a 6 speed and 2. when u r getting out of 1st u dont need to give it any gas to get it going. bottom line is i like the car so much i bought an 2LT model for 19500 today for my dad, my father i are very happy with what he got also it ride very well and smooth

    I read the article. It is made in Korea for the European market and is made in Lordstown Ohio for North America. It is built on the Opel Delta platform. So I suppose you are correct then, only for europe.

    I rented a Cruze, and I've had it for a week now. I love the car, it handles great, I think gas mileage could be better, design is amazing on it, brakes in an instant. Really nice car over all!

    @ChickenC0re Thanks for your comments. I do wonder if Honda and Toyota will outclass the Cruze, especially on the interior. As of late, Japanese have been taking content out of the interiors of their vehicles. For example, the new Toyota Sienna was dinged as having poorer fit and finish and noise levels than the van it replaced. Hard plastic on the dash where there was soft plastic. Another example, the new Scion tC. The interior on that vehicle is clearly the victim of cost cutting.

    @focusonthegreen Well, you have whittled it down to two excellent models. I haven't driven the new Focus yet but I was there for the reveal in Detroit and it is a great looking car. I think we will be seeing a Cruze hatch variant at the Paris Motors Show this year, but will it come to the USA? I imagine if the Focus 5 door takes off the Cruze hatch would find its way over here.

    Try to test drive the SX4 Crossover (26mpg is the best I can do). It's All wheel drive system is top notch and there's tons of after-market kits available to "Soup up your Ride". It's also roof rack ready thats got 10 individual pillar supports for carrying kayaks!

    @dagrome I'd say the cruze, hands down, is the best bang for your buck. The fuel economy is great, the turbo gives you extra torque for passing, and it is backed by a very attractive warranty. I love GM vehicles and I think this is a real winner for them!

    @katseki I suppose that everyone has their bias. However, given the limited nature of the preview and my one take approch to shooting this video, I didn't feel this is the forum for nits and quibbles. When Chevrolet makes the Cruze available for a weeklong test, then we can get into specifics. In the meantime, if you Google my name, Michael Sheena and Chevrolet Cruze, you will get some written reviews with more detailed insight on the car.

    @j101saar I took the Honda, Toyota and Cruze out on identical loops. A mix of country back road and faster four lane highway. We also drove the Cruze on various 30-40 mile segments. Overall, I liked the way the Cruze handled. Surprise turns did not yield uncomfortable body lean & I went as fast as I felt comfortable going around the corners without disturbing my fellow journalists riding in the car. Is it as sporty as a Mazda3? No, probably not, but it is not a numb or lifeless rental car.

  • @joewillgo
    @joewillgo 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @thesnotfIakes True, I do agree they do seem to be better, and how the Cruze being a compact car with power adjustable seats?! Dam that is a SEGMENT FIRST?! However, how do you know if the Cruze will be a vehicle that will go 10 years or 100 thousand miles or more without any problems? & being able to skip out on some maintenance every now & then.

  • @satchboogyfan
    @satchboogyfan 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess I'm more interested in the gas mileage of the cruze than anything else
    the Cruze looked about the size of a mazda3
    the corolla looked to have a bigger back seat
    So is the cruze going to replace the Cobalt or is it supose to be more of a new Geo style car
    A 1.4 supercharged or a 1.8 engines that small have to be very efficient to make enough power to move a small family of 4 or 2 adults and groceries
    It will be interesting to see how this plays out

    ... My only complaint was the lack of cargo space, but then I am coming over from a Vectra which probably has one of the largest cargo spaces in its class. The automatic box was disappointing matched to the 1.8 petrol - the fuel consumption was horrendous (barely got above 30mpg even on the motorway), and it was hideously underpowered...so I'll be going for a diesel manuall when I go to buy. Around town, the engine and transmission were fine, you only noticed the power issue when overtaking.

  • @rwcmick
    @rwcmick  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Iwish4zombies Auto manufacturers cover expenses for most reviewers to attend these events. The company doesn't tell you what to write nor does it expect glowing reviews every time. I believe the Cruze is a solid entry and being the latest kid on the block has an edge over the competition. When Toyota and Honda revamp their products, they'll be given equal consideration. Right now, however, their products are older and it shows when you drive them back to back.

    nice car. GM and Ford finally realized that they've been building superb small cars overseas for years and are bringing them here instead of the half ass stuff they've been selling stateside since the Vega and Pinto. Kudos to the GM engineers in Germany and Korea that came up with this car.

    @backintack My first car was V8 and I know all the stupid things I did with it, so I would recommend you reconsider that requirement. No matter what you choose, try to get a car with stability control This is the one modern safety feature that I encourage everyone to have. I don't know how much money you have to play with, so it is kind of hard to recommend one particular model. Don't rush the decision, try to drive as many cars as you can and find the best example you can afford.

    I had a Ford in the 1980's that turned me away from all American cars. With so many repairs and issues within 6 months of purchase, I had to sell that thing. I've had only Honda and Toyota products since then. However, even 4 years ago I started to see significant improvement in the Ford products (a hard pill to swallow) and now the GM products. That new Cruze looks like a mini-Malibu to me and I really liked that car. Chevrolet is doing better. I might buy one (well a Malibu that is).

  • @rwcmick

    @rwcmick I remember Scion reps making a big deal about the "real aluminum" they used on the first tC and how they knew that their customers could spot a a faux piece of painted plastic. The new Volkswagen Jetta, while sporting a lower price point, also sports a lower rent interior. Taken a look at the Honda Insight? The interior plastic on that car is atrocious! How about the Mazda2? Sure it is lower cost than the Fiesta, but man what a difference in the materials on the dash!

    I love people complaining about GM plastic interiors.....Let's get 1 thing stright. Most cars have plastic dashboards, it's the largest piece of plastic in the interior. Although most cars in the 40,000-70,000 cars do have leather wraped dashes. I think people need to look at the car this car is replacing, it's larger, the quality is higher, and it has real style and with the turbo it's sporty. This will do well for GM.

    @meadowshockey There is no doubt the Cruze leads over the current Corolla and Civic. The interior really is an amazing step forward. Great to see GM and Ford improving their interiors just as some of the Asian competition seems scaling back (seen the new Scion tC dash yet?). Now we have to see Chrysler's new round of refreshes and new models that supposedly have much better materials.

    GM has really improved over the years. This car is to prove to the country that GM can make a car that is just as good as Honda and Toyota, and they did a good job. There is a catch though, GM has great products that immediately outclasses all other car makers, but they always do it a little later than others. This car will be outclassed and dated in 2 years when they redo the civic and corolla for 2012.

    @backintack Anything that is sporty with a V8 is going to be to expensive for you if this is for first car, since you are 16-18 and have no insurance history. Getting a V8 these days is stupid anyway, more than the insurance prices hahaha. The I4s and V6s of today make the same amount of power of v8s and v6s of just 10 years ago. Also what state do you live in? You will not want anything rear wheel drive if you live in the midwest. I have had several new and used cars and Im still 26.

    @yynotnnh Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I will tell you this, I took the Civic and Cruze on identical loops and the Civic was clearly noisier with a harsher ride and poorer interior materials. I preferred the Cruze's turbo as well. I'm not saying the Civic is a bad car, it isn't, it is a very good one. As it stands today, the Civic is outmatched by the Cruze. I'm anxious to see Honda's next effort, but its latest products haven't been styling masterpieces nor sport rich interiors.
