You are the hardest working person I think I've ever seen. So much effort you've put into this room it's insane! It also highlights how impractical a full atmos rig is for both, the consumer and us engineers. I think most people are going to experience atmos in cars and airpods.
Great video Colt!! I really appreciate all the details and the tech info - I DO have to point out, though: Yes, all junction boxes require a cover (as a Journeyman Elec in TX, I have seen MANY DIY nightmares that would likely have burned the house down over time, so I was happy to see that detail) - BUT, regarding Code compliant installation of cables terminated/ spliced inside junction boxes - NFPA/NEC 70 requires all cables/ conductors to be installed with the correct "connectors/ strain relief fittings" where they exit the box. This is why there are typically 2 different size "knockouts" on the sides of the box. There are corresponding connectors that will hold the cable securely and prevent any skinning or damage to the cables or compromise to the connections inside. Just a note, as you did mention installing "to code". Hope this helps someone out there - cheers! Keep 'em coming! 🤘🏻👊🏼
Congrats again on your install, Colt! For a monitor controller, unless you're willing to shell out the $ for a MOM controller, an old iPad running the Avid Control App works great as a touch screen interface for DADman.
I just got off work man. I got to stop mid video to sa "Colt, you a damn dawg man. Ain nothing you can't do. I sit here and I watch you fab them cables and run the lines. You really a true One Man Band Man" . I really couldn't say it better without cussing. You the man colt.
Hello, in Europe/germany those unistruds are totally common and we call them C Rail ( C Schiene) and they are indeed used in industry for all kinds of construction and conduits. Most of the time we use them to mount distribution cabinets. Another often used construction piece is called “ITEM’ and it’s made from aluminium. You can built everything with them like with LEGO.
I am watching Colt’s channel since a few years and his dedication is his trade mark. He is trying earn the living out of his studio and must “follow the money”. When almost every small band or rookie artist can record the demo at home for free such private studios must look for customers among game and filmmakers. I guess that is what motivated Colt to invest in Atmos. It’s his money and his risk. I myself am completely against Atmos as it seems to be another one “gimmick” as the “5.1 Surround” or “THX” used to be. But I hope Colt will get his invested money back (at least), because he really deserves it. And I am thankful to watch (thanks to Colt) how complicated the Atmos system is. Greetings!☀️
Your journey in all of this since your event monitors 'era' has been pretty encouraging, educating - not to mention epic! Thanks Colt! Your content has been very helpful from mixing to builds, etc. Huge impact. I appreciate you man. Thanks alot!
Its great! IMHO. You got to drill those floor holes for the cables. You know it. I know it. We all know it. It will look the best. Finish line in view man. You cant come this far and not do it. You'll be so stoked that you did. Great work man!
Been waited this for a year now. From the 1st renovation and acoustics treatment for this room, we have been following you ever since.. Great works, can't wait to see more video about mixing in Atmos...
As many here, I'm so pumped to watch this after a frustrating day in the life of an IT professional (very long termed). I'm building in your honor sir. Have acquired several pieces of analog gear after watching your joys of creative productions. Out of the many great channels to learn from ... I'm here more than anywhere else! Bravo ...
Hey Colt ! That's great work, I'd love to come in to listen how it sounds ! For your cables coming from the back racks, I think the best way would be send everything through the floor. Why not opening holes behind the racks and the desk, with some kind of isolating trap, and to run a large conduit in the floor. If you go that way, when you will run your cables, don't forget to add a pulling cord as well, that would be great to add some new cables down the road (and you will).
Colt, Josh, Gavin and everyone who helped, awesome job. At the beginning of the video you can hear the happiness in you voice. Man this studio looks sweet. Can't wait to see the next one. On a side note is this the new location for your movie night?
Wow! Thanks for sharing-looks awesome!🍻 -what makes it even cooler..."I'm so pumped to get work and get mixing" ...cant wait to hear some mixes from "professor Colt"😎
Incredible setup. So dang cool. Suggestion on display, switch to a small high-quality AT/ALR projection setup. It works in the middle of the day due to the ALR screen, good AT screens can be EQ'd properly without increasing distortion, and it not only ergonomically helps with your neck with keeping your head straight, but it solves your main issue of not blocking your center channel. Suggestion for cable management on the floor, woven cable wrap is hard to beat. Simple, cheap, and it looks very nice.
Darn metric system! There’s a reason standard is standard in the USA. I feel your frustration, been there! Great job and great job filming also! Peter Mckinnon would be proud 🎥
You should have a square washer against the strut with a split washer and nut to lock the spring nut in place and jam nuts against both sides of the coupler nut to prevent loosening...congrats on the motivation! Looks good.
Great video, Colt. Thank you. Very happy to see your long-awaited Atmos setup finally happening - loving your enthusiasm! Envying you your monitoring setup too! I'm guessing that getting acclimated to how it'll all work in your room and listening to *a lot* of other music is next? Curious as to how you plan to do that...for me, getting a bunch of Atmos blu-ray discs (essential for full bandwidth, as opposed to lossy streamed Apple Music etc, which is cool and gives you access to huge amounts of music in Atmos, but, being like a multichannel mp3, can get pretty sketchy sonically, particularly when you hear the heights on their own!) was the way forward - there's a lot of good stuff available. That, again for me, meant an hdmi preamp and a bunch of routing issues. My interface has recallable routing patches, so I developed one for external sources and another for my ongoing atmos mixes. Looking forward to whatever comes next and to your continuing evangelism for Atmos. Go boldly!
Love the dedication, the way you work and the way how you try to film every step of the journey. Good and hard times, weird camera angles. Respect and congrats on the Atmos system 🤘🏻!
Wooo hoo! Welcome to the Atmos family. Been waiting for this one. Happy days! Now I want to see more Atmos content, but also stereo! Can’t forget trusty old stereo. 😊
@@AlbertWeijersNot sure! But, if you are listening on Apple or other capable platform, it’s grown. Only because most of the bigger artists are using it. I assume it’s about the same as stereo listers to mono back in the day. Who knows? But we’ll see where it all goes. Just because it’s still new doesn’t mean it will fail, nor does it mean it will succeed either. But it is fun having something new to mess around with in the audio space. It’s been a while since we’ve had something totally new to play with.
@@QualifiedSoundStudios 80% of people can't tell mono from stereo. Quadraphonic was invented in the 70's, a failure. I have 5.1 in my living room, which is nice, but if I had stereo, I would be just as happy watching tv, movies and listening music. The problem is: these formats are technical and nice, but music goes to the heart and doesn't care about how it goes there. And people don't care either. If I mix a song and do panning, I would be lucky if a listener hears that. But they all know if they like it or not, mono, stereo or Atmos, that does not matter.
@@AlbertWeijers oh I definitely agree. I don’t hear spatial very well at all in headphones. But despite what we all think, it’s coming, I say this because of those big companies who want to sell the next thing. Even if consumers don’t know or care, which is definitely a thing, it won’t matter because those big companies are going to bake it in to everything anyway. Now, I agree with your point, I’d rather spend the money elsewhere. But in saying that my use case is composing for film and games, so not necessarily for music in the traditional sense. If I wasn’t doing that I wouldn’t have taken the jump into yet. It may prove more useful to me for the areas I’m working in. I’m currently scoring a game and the developers are keen on having it, they said to me, it’s a “nice to have”. But by no means a requirement at this stage.
My god, I moaned multiple times while watching this. What a grueling amount of work... I would have called it off after day 2. So frustrating even to watch which roadblocks you ran into. Crazy persistence!
Hey brother amazing video this has been a amazing journey thanks for the boost i needed this it can be done! Trying filling the sound anchors stands with sand. It def helps, I saw it myself when measuring my room.
Get yourself a Stream Deck+ with MOM emulation software!! It has been killer for the past year for my rig. Weirdly enough, I was talking with my fiancé about building my studio last year TODAY!! Super hyped for the future of your creative mixing endeavors with immersive tech.
I’m gonna set up a similar 15.2 system, except with Wilson WAMM Master Chronosonics for the speakers. Keith Don’t Go in 17 channel Atmos is gonna be so lit.
Analoug over cat5e/6e rj45 connects is a really good way to get super compact XLR cable runs down to a minimum size. If you pick cat cable that has indavidually sheilded twisted pairs with overall sheilding aswell, you'll have slightly better noise rejection than a quality XLR cable and each cat5e cable would be 4 x XLR cable. You can also have Sub d connects on the end, XLR breakout or go into a box with rJ45 and break out to XLR or Sub D from there. it reduces the wires to 1/4 the amount of runs.r If I'm not mistaken Capi gear does some of the RJ45 stuff aswell...
for tidying up the long cables going around from the back to the front. get a nice looking cable ramp with multiple tracks inside. you can have one lane for the signal going to the sides vs the ceiling vs the power and keep them all separate while protecting them from being stepped on / rolled on and allow folks to walk around the room safely w no tripping. zip tying is an ok idea but zip tie the "like" cables to make tracing easier (sides only, ceiling only, power only, etc). a nylon mesh wrapping will look bulky and will make cable tracing tedious and still be a trip hazard. i personally would wait until youve used the rig for some time before drilling into the floor. a few months of getting to know the system will do you good in determining whats best. i will also second the comments saying to put some strain relief on the junction box on the ceiling. the edges of the metal holes can cut those cables. lastly i recommend switching from straight connectors to 90 degree connectors for the surround monitors on the floor to prevent someone from walking around them and snagging your xlr on accident. great video, thanks for sharing!
I bought focal for my car when they werent ON the top but the Sound Like 10 years ago was outstanding In the near Future i will listen to their monitors in compsrison to the Adam audio and other Standard monitors I never hear them all in compsrison
Wow Colt, that is some set up. I am in some ways in the same boat on switching my studio around. I started out with an Agosy desk filled it with mic pre’s, eq’s and compressor’s , summing mixer but truthfully I wanted a console. So last summer I bought an old A&H 32 track console for little money and learned how to use it. Could not record while learning. So now end of September I am going for my Trident 88-24. So I understand why things take so long. It’s been just over a year I have been in the transition mode. That set up is so clean looking. Once I get my board I want to get the Focals , Trio 6’s or 11’s. My heart is with the 11’s and after watching your speaker stand video I am going with the sound anchors also. Very very clean set up. Interesting to see what ya come up with the cables running on the floor behind all the speakers stands. You got some room there. Thanks for posting. I was on the rails about the sound anchors but after watching your stand video I’m all in on the anchors. Thanks for posting..D..
Great video, Colt! Looking forward to seeing what your next video on tuning and optimization. Welcome to Atmos in your studio moving forward. Cheers from my Atmos studio in Colorado!
Regarding your screen; I don’t know how comfortable it would be, but you could try something like the Vision Pro. If you use AR glasses, you could still see all your gear, the gloating virtual computer screen could be as big as you like, and there’s be nothing in the way of your speakers.
Hi Colt - awesome project and thanks for your humble way of sharing your process and lessons learned. My question is about your producers desk / outboard gear rack behind your main mix position. It looks fantastic with the live edge wooden top you’ve installed. In 2 channel this would not be a concern but by my eye with height of your side and rear speakers you could get reflections off this very good reflector to your ears at mix position and comb filtering could also happen at these acute angles. I am interested to know if the geometry could be a problem and if you have thought about this ?
Congrats Man! I have a suggestion for you on the cable management from your rack to the front of your room. Use Ethernet Cat snakes they are 4 channels each and that would eliminate a bunch of individual cables, also remember you were going to make a hole into the floor and that would be the cleanest run, but I know that's a lot of labor and time and I'm sure you just wanna get back to working. It's All in the Details and your videos show us that, Keep It Up.
Wow so much work! How much did the whole system cost? And how much did Josh charge you? Would love to hear your room! One Love! Always forward, never ever backward!! ☀☀☀ 💚💛❤ 🙏🏿🙏🙏🏼
Great video! Fascinating process! Is it an option to add a minimally raised floor (2"") in the middle part of the room, up to he position of the speaker stands? Then you can hide all the cabling underneath. Or alternatively in the perimeter of the room (sides and front)? Or does that ruin your acoustics...
What's funny is that the general public said the same thing about cell phones, power windows and doors in cars, the internet.... The list goes in and on! And here we are, and yeah, for those of you who don't care, some of us do! Please stop raining on the parade of those of us who want Atmos systems in our homes, studios, or cars... If you desire stereo ROCK ON!
@@TUNEDPIECESMUSIC But that list is false , the internet took off right away , same goes for cell phones ... maybe a minority was against those things but not the majority .... Now for things like NFTs , the metaverse , atmos for music , VR .... it is reversed , a tiny minority praising those ( but muh it is the here to stay fire bro ) and the vast majority is either ignoring or actively mocking ... the first I ve heard " stereo is dead , atmos is the future bro " was like 8 years , maybe lets give it another 20 - 22 years lol
Good on you man. Regardless of immersive audio’s longevity, I’m pulling for you. Maybe because of vids like this , it will blow up , and become as popular as sliced bread!!
Great video! Please do explain how you are connecting the MTRX Studio via Thunderbolt. I have one but no Thunderbolt port. Also can you share how you are connecting Apple Music through DADMan? Thanks!!!
The room is amazing no doubt, but it’s also not hard to see why people are not tripping over each other to install an Atmos rig. I’m exhausted just watching.
I probably wouldn't recommended putting electric wires into a metal box - and I personally wouldn't spend 30k on speakers - but I still think you did a great job and I adore how thorough and neat you made everything. 👍
Did you ever consider analog audio over ethernet cables for your speaker lines. I know you're well down the road with that mogami or whatever it is but it's so much more conxwalable and arguably, more than adequate for line level signal.
The end results speak so highly of Gavin Haverstick and his team. There are so many stories of ppl building studios only to have to go back redo things because the acoustics are terrible despite spending significant amounts of money on design and treatment ahead of time.
Great video .. one thing i don't understand is if you knew you were putting all this in and had a layout designed already why you didn't put some cable channels in the floor?
Hi! - big gratulations!!!!!!! looks awsome! - maybe you or commenters can give me a hint, am goinmg to upgrade my Atmos KRK System to focal - ist it possible to "mix" Focal solo 6 as l R and front with focal shape? Thanks and have a great day!

You should have strain reliefs on the cables going into the junction box above the cloud. Do not leave them laying on the knock out holes.

Great question! It’s actually something we are dealing with right now today during tuning. It will be covered in the upcoming video on tuning the rig.

Thank you for sharing this journey ... You have given us so many ideas ,,Thanks Bro !!!
Congrats man, what an inspiration you are!
Welcome into the immersive world of audio... Been in for three years now and it is so next level! Congrats 👏
But the general public still doesn t care at all
What's funny is that the general public said the same thing about cell phones, power windows and doors in cars, the internet....
So happy for you!
Hell yeah, so keen to watch this!
Glad to know I'm not the only person that has to get a PIN chart to soldier XLRs.
Colt a hair dryer will work I believe on shrink wrap if it can get hot enough. Great video.
What’s up my guy? Love your channel. I’m building a studio in my home from the ground up. I would love to get your consulting.
Shoot me a message on Instagram! Thanks!
What a nice production! And really interesting video, learning a lot!
I always had a question: ¿Did you never planned on recording drums on that room?
Congrats! Looks amazing!
What a mountain of money u put into this! 😱
No cable clamps with your metal junction box?
I probably wouldn't recommended putting electric wires into a metal box - and I personally wouldn't spend 30k on speakers - but I still think you did a great job and I adore how thorough and neat you made everything. 👍
Can’t wait to dig into this video!
We need to get together soon!
Vote with a like for more documentary length videos from Colt! ❤😂
you can buy really long power/XLR combo cables
Looks really good Colt, very nice 🤟🏼
Also, I love whatever background track you are playing. It’s like never ending story meets shiny toy guns. Who is it?
Good job. it looks amazing I'm pretty sure it sounds amazing. hurry man!! get good at atmos so I can take some classes from you.
For the cables you could get those things that are used live to put over snakes and cables to hide them and prevent people from tripping over them
Colt could you please let me know where, or how to build that awsome skyline type diffuser?. Best one I've ever seen!
Please respond...
I believe someone or a company made it for him. He talks about it briefly in the video before this one (or the one before that, can't recall exactly).
Awesomeness!!!
Did you ever consider analog audio over ethernet cables for your speaker lines. I know you're well down the road with that mogami or whatever it is but it's so much more conxwalable and arguably, more than adequate for line level signal.
For the cables, you could use those plastic ramp covers that they have at live events?
The end results speak so highly of Gavin Haverstick and his team. There are so many stories of ppl building studios only to have to go back redo things because the acoustics are terrible despite spending significant amounts of money on design and treatment ahead of time.
Really appreciate the kind words, Richard! 🙌
