I’m still here… 😂 your videos can never be too long. So much information, advice and inspiration in every video! Currently working on my first proper studio with Atmos in mind, almost from the word go. Thanks colt!
I was skeptical at first, but after seeing the additional practicality of it I know it’s going to be so awesome for each and every one of the 15 people in the world who are going to set up an Atmos speaker system in their home.
@@NoeAnton There are now thousands of atmos studios in the world :) Mine for one and i am no jeff bezos and anyone can mix in atmos with 80% of daws out the box.
I did my Atmos upgrade over 5 years ago. Everything goes to the renderer now but I don’t actually get a lot of delivery requirements for Atmos. 5 years of Atmos hype and not a lot of payoff for me.
Still here. Looking forward to hearing your mixes in Atmos when your solid with it. Hearing stuff in Atmos that I've listened to for decades it's like hearing it for the 1st time. I hear all this stuff that's been there but never prominent enough to include it songs the way you know them. I heard some Yes tracks the other day in Atmos that was produced by Trevor Horn. It was incredible. Love the new format.
I have a serious love-hate relationship with this process. There are days when I can't wait to work through a system. Then there are times when I would rather eat broken glass.
/s dystopia: in 5 years, after having spent 1 year building everything and $200k less in the account, you discover that the atmos mix is no longer the trend, and that ultimately just a stereo mix is enough. At least you have a good sound system to listen to a few CDs. 😁
watched it to the end …Switching back and from atmos curve to what was ur flat and tuning the stereo image for loudness at each speaker set helped me a bunch…using dadman to eq as well setting up monitor profiles just getting going with mine have not mixed yet
This feels like the peak of consumerist brain rot for mix engineers. Someone somewhere is laughing is disbelief that they managed to con you into buying this setup. I could understand if you were pushing the boundaries of classical or EDM, or maybe prog jazz or metal. Maybe if you were Hans Zimmer’s engineer, or an artist like Jon Hopkins. But you’re not, I’ve listened to all the tracks in your playlist and they’re the most generic, played out, and bland pop country “oh darlin, I dun mess’d up by kissin’ yer sister, now I miss ya” forgettable Nashville trash. You could install and tune another 500 speakers in that room and it STILL wouldn’t improve the songs. Just a truly baffling series of events. I guess if it makes you happy that’s the main thing. Happy birthday 🎉
It is amazing how one is able to become totally absorbed in something that you neither fully understand or are able to envisage in your own home studio environment. Even though this was a long video by YT standards, I really enjoyed it. You have managed to create a world class room Colt, so hats off to you.
I wish I had that technology back in the 70s when I was audiophile running an all-tube audio rig with bi-amped custom speakers and an electronic crossover. We did it all by ear back then.
As someone who has attended Dolby Calibration Room Tuning training at Dolby headquarters in Burbank. It is not advised but absolutely necessary to tune/commission Dolby Atmos rooms utilizing at least 5 if not 7 microphones. One microphone does not tell the whole story... where multiple microphones allow an "Averaging" for a more accurate calibration. As noted we are to service the client. Most times we tune to the Dolby Atmos curve even though some client have requested a flat tune...which can be hard on the ears and overall boring way to monitor. Most end up reverting to the Dolby Curve in the end.
Josh, the guy who tuned the room, here. I also was part of Dolby’s room calibration training, although in Nashville. Dolby does prefer a spatial average of mics but, it’s by no means “absolutely necessary”. I don’t have seven measurement mics, but I do have three and I’ve rented additional mics on a couple occasions. In relatively small, low Rt listening environments, I have personally found no significant difference between a single point measurement and a spatial average. With care and intention, I find results with one mic can be stellar. Had the room been larger and had the speakers been further from listening position, I may have opted to go the spatial average route. There is a fabulous AES paper from Mäkivirta and Lund entitled, “Spatial stability of the frequency response estimate and the benefit of spatial averaging” that discusses this topic in depth. It’s a fascinating read, really. Regarding the curve, I absolutely agree that every person working with Atmos should have their system calibrated to the curve. There is a very real reason for its existence and it’s a meaningful tool. However, I don’t think engineers should ignore the potential byproduct of using that many filters on any signal, let alone 12+ channels that should be working to deliver one cohesive experience. Having one “natural” tuning and one tuned to the curve is the best of both worlds. Like any monitoring system, the user should use it, learn it and adapt it, if need be, to their own personal taste and space. What works for one person doesn’t always for another. Colt’s room sounds fantastic so far and I think he’ll continue to make improvements as dives deeper into Atmos.
@@joshestock Hey Josh, Thanks for the detailed reply. As they say there are two ways to skin a cat. If it sounds good. it is good. That is all that matters.
Great to see everyone’s process. For those wondering, when calibrating a room it’s good practice to use 6 microphones when calibrating an Atmos room because that will give you a bigger “sweet” spot at mix position.
Hey, Colt! Thanks for this. Im really interested in your studio power and power conditioner setup. Did you have to improve anything since installing the atmos rig? How much of the upgrade was budgeted to that? Thanks!!!!
Apogee and Audient have introduced interfaces with built in software for Atmos. I’ve been looking at how much an Atmos set up would cost but I’ve come to the conclusion that with the atmos Trinnov and a serious interface and the right monitors AND the right room it could go terribly wrong. You’ve obviously put a lot of thought and effort into getting this right. In 10 years time when consumer electronics will all have atmos you’ll be well ahead of the curve
Thanks for the video! - as i run also a Atmos Rig - i was really scared about the phantom centers - but simply they are there and we have to deal with it and at this time 99,9% of our listeners are on phones, so it has to work especially on phones ;) - after 8 month of doing a lot of Atmos mixes (mostly radioplay or audiodrama) i got used to it,! so i am really wondering how you talk about Atmos in some time :) - again gratulations to your excellent rig! have a good time! greetings from austria!
Happy b day Colt... This process is something that never gets solved in a day. You either need to learn the room the way it is, or tweak here and there will it right for you. I hate settling, there is something magical when you get a room to a point where you dont have to compensate, so keep reaching for that.
Happy Birthday nro... enjoy! Setup is looking good there bro! Quick question? If someone wants to have the session in the Atmos, how much you charge? Are booking for the Atmos 8-12hr day booking, or by hour? How much do you charge for Non-Atmos session? And is it set by the 8-12hr day, or hourly booking? Trying to wrap my heaed all the benefits!
Happy belated Birthday and CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Your mix position has gone through quite the transformation since the apartment... SO STOKED FOR YOU!!! I was looking forward to this video, I don't think it's boring at all & I like the camera work and tunes you used as well, good production. I am surprised I watched this long of a video on TH-cam, lol Good stuff though!
Happy birthday dude! 🎉 And congrats on an awesome studio, can’t wait to hear some of the music you create in there! We should do an interview with you! ❤ We’ve also done a video with Dolby in the UK documenting their calibration process with many more mics, as you mentioned, so keep an eye out for that coming soon! Great video 👍
Congrats colt you deserve it man, can’t wait to hear the mixes you push out bro…I have everything except all of the monitors I’m just waiting awhile before I take the plunge 😂. Happy birthday bro.
Happy birthday, my brother. May you continue to receive the blessings you deserve. Thank you for everything you do and continue to do for the community.
I'm about to calibrate my humble atmos rig next week and this was very encouraging. I will use Sonarworks for the heavy lifting but the manual perception adjusting was an eye opener. i will definitively do that. The ears are always the ultimate judge 😁 Thank you soo much Colt for sharing your learning curve 🙏
Should you test tone your room with a 200+ pound bag of hot water sitting at mix position? Seems like it would affect the outcome. I know when I was doing Live Sound and we would Smaart, It was for the most part useless as far as system EQ because a crowd diffuses and absorbs soooo much. You need a test dummy like on Myth Busters!
