I know Linus said in WAN he doesn't really like doing this 'easy' content, but honestly as someone who watches every video - this is my favourite stuff. Always love the vlog stuff and wish you guys made more!
Agreed. I don't care about graphic card reviews and all the really technical stuff they can get into on this channel. I watch all the videos for the goofy stuff that can get thrown into the script or editing. This kind of stuff and the Intel Extreme Upgrade stuff I can watch all day long.
I second this. Homes/Architecture and PC/Technology stuff is some of what I really enjoy watching on TH-cam. Linus being able to combine these topics into a series of videos has really been awesome and I love it. I also love his technical PC and technology stuff, but this has been top notch.
Nothing about anything that was on video here seemed to be "easy"... ...sticking in a graphics card into a computer and running benchmarks is extremely "easy" compared to the work that is the content of this video.
Do you want maximum audio quality or nice looking speakers? If you want "both", the closest you can get is something like Genelec 8260 or 8361 which doesn't look bad even when it's pointed directly towards the listener. For satellite setup you could use something like Genelec 8330 if you have good subwoofers. The price might get your eyes a bit moist, though.
@@lukebuchwald9252 I think many women actually like the looks of 8000 series Genelecs. The 8260 might be too big but 8330 in white color should be pretty well received in most homes.
Not really a bad plan when it works, which it seems like it does for linus. The fact it appears they have a really positive and healthy environment as well as relationships with the hires makes a big difference when those hires appear on screen, you can fake being happy admittedly, but it is hard to do it consistently. I have the feeling that linus and Yvonne would do all they can to help their employees.
Any speaker or subwoofer with a port that is aimed at a wall will be highly sensitive to its position relative to the wall. The frequency response (using the PC2000 sub as an example) will show a large peak at one frequency and a large null at a related frequency. These frequencies vary depending on the distance of the port from the wall. While the auto-calibration feature of a receiver or processor will attempt to compensate, that compensation will result in large EQ boosts/cuts which affect both phase response and system headroom. With this many speakers in this size room, headroom is not so much of an issue - but you may find that you can get better results with much less correction with speaker placement that takes the port location into account. Looks like a fun project!
Subwoofer placement definitely matters. Room modes are a real thing and you can get huge dips in bass in certain seating positions if you are not careful. 2 subwoofers definitely helps even this out but it is still important to place them correctly. Doing a sub crawl will help in this regard and also running room correction software will help as well as long as it has a separate bass management component, ie Dirac Live, Audyssey XT etc.
yeah but at the same time it matters less the more subs you have, and in his case he has them in differnt planes, vertical and horizontal. to, he's running 4 subs, with 6 drivers, depending on how he is running his towers anyway. Obviously wih the room config the subs can only go so many places without being in the way, it'll be fine, especially if he doesn't obsess over seat to seat consistency, long as they get time and phase aligned.
As Dan said the frequencies are so low that their wavelength is so big it'll practically fill the entire room regardless of where they are. What you should however note is the reflection of those waves as the reflected waves can counteract and indeed create "dead space" (look at 2 water drips falling into a pond and how their waves cancel each other out at certain parts). But other than that its not that big a deal (and tbh you gotta be real unlucky for that to happen anyway)
Except for the fact that Audyssey is the worst room correction software in the world and hates subwoofers. Sub placement matters only if it's a ported sub where the port is aimed at you and you've only got reflective surfaces. If I can get away with just putting a balled up pair of socks in my soundbar's ported upright sub and having it sound fine in a very reflective room, Linus will not be running into issues here. The only times I've had to do a sub crawl in the past 10 years was when someone had set up their speakers with Audyssey and I had to correct it for them...
@@KoenvdW88 oh there are worse...arc didn't even work til recently. and no one like yamaha's implementation. Audyssey is fine if you help it with the editor and don't give it complete crap to start with. Bottom line, if you have 2 or more (high quality) subs you're going to be ok, unless you are in a very challenging room. And I doubt the kids or his wife are all that picky anyway.
For a small room with two subs, it'll probably sound fine wherever - but it's worth working on the placement to get consistent bass at most of the seats. Also probably worth floor to ceiling corner bass traps and acoustic panels at first reflection points... The acoustic treatment would be a nice project, maybe they can bring in someone experienced to teach us!
Glad to see you raise the back row for the sake of sitting behind tall people without tearing up the existing carpet. I guess that Dan test during the moving videos really spooked you.
Welcome to the beginning. Soon, you'll be putting sound treatments on the walls and ceiling and swapping out just about every part of the sound system. ...and it's going to be fantastic. Shout out to SpareChange and his channel, he's rocking it on the high-end.
Listen. My 5.1 became 7.1 became 7.2 in the period of a couple months, and now I'm looking at upgrading the receiver to handle 9.2 because I really want proper tops. I've tried convincing the wife to let me replace the wood paneling in the theater with carpet. It's dangerous.
@@tpasco1995 What do you want with carpet? Deaden everything from 5kHz and above? And go with 5.1.4 rather than 7.1.2. The 4 height channels make much more sense than back surrounds.
@@tpasco1995 Carpet will only do something above 6-8kHz. If you really want to do something build yourself a ceiling panel filled with 10-15cm insulation like hemp. You need a lot of thickness and quite an area to get reverb down across 250Hz-20kHz, not only the highs.

@@SwolePapi15 the big one that stood out to me was the subwoofer placement. It's crucial to get good bass and proper placement. The more subwoofers the better for equal sound and no peeks or booms. Bass is hard to manage as the sound waves are much longer then everything else above 45hz that's why it's sometimes good to place a sub in a corner of the room with space off the wall and even move it around to see if your getting any dips or nulls
Congrats on the theater! This was a goal of mine in college. I saved up, didn't buy my first car like most folks (I can't drive for disability reasons) - so instead I built a theater in my bedroom (aka Dad's basement). That was 20 years ago (eek). But I know that moment when you first turn on the projector or get the sound working. I've got an SVS sub from that era and my friend's joked I stole it from a movie theater. I don't get to use it these days as I moved into a small apartment when I moved out of Dad's house and haven't landed in a house of my own yet (thanks housing market disaster). But when I do, I'll definitely be reviving the theater.
Suggestion: Next time, if there is one, cover the walls with 3/4 inch plywood then drywall. Easy mounting for anything. No need to find studs or use anchors
We just bought a house and I'm going slightly the other way. Cut plywood to be smaller than the TV, but big enough that it spans three studs. Bolt the plywood to the three studs with three screws each, paint it, then bolt the tv to the plywood in exactly the position you want. A little less elegant than plywood behind the drywall, but works great for a quick fix.
And also a good reason to actually use the speaker grills instead of throwing them away like Jake said. I don't use mine but if I had kids they would be covered
Watching this video made me realize how my parents have always given me what I´ve wanted, just like you with your kids, I wish I could get some of that love back especially since my dad´s dream is also having a home theater, but I´m just a broke student, I hope one day I can finally make my dad´s dream come true

Linus, after seeing this 11 months ago i decided to finsh my downstairs and make a home theater in one of the rooms, this is still one of my favorite videos from you
We used a laser level once during my old job as an assistant IT tech at a school, and we were warned about safety so thoroughly that I'm tensed up watching it left on and everyone wandering about the room facing towards it.
As a Home Theater enthusiasts I have to say this was one of my favorite videos of yours. Seeing you build and then that enjoyment the first time was awesome haha. Reminded me of the first time I watched my Home Theater setup. Hope you and your family and friends enjoy it for many years!
His stealth family room TV setup is damned impressive in its own right. I admit, my big Sony bookshelf speakers from God-only-knows-when are not exactly elegant in the living room, but they do sound really good. A few years ago, I bought my parents this cheap Element TV. They have a pretty big living room with a cathedral ceiling, and the built-in speakers honestly sound quite respectable.
I got an ultimate mancave too, nothing like it. I love it. Pool table, dart board, theater setup. 2 More rooms in the basement also. Computer room with my record player and 400+ records, work bench. Another room with the retro game systems with 2 CRT tvs and a 65 inch rear projection mitsubishi. I love my house
6:50 I have to agree with Jake on the placement of those subs. I think the audio from the towers to the rear seats and just in general will be affected. If those subs fit in the back of the room, which may barely be the case I would do that. Otherwise since those towers have pretty hefty subs built in, adding a ported sub that goes in the bottom portion of the media cabinet would be a better option to keep everything clean and obstruction free.
Tbh those PC2000s would be kinda rad speaker stands with some vibration dampening material on top of them. That MTM design on the towers makes the vertical alignment finicky from the physics standpoint, but at least it somewhat eliminates roof and floor first reflections.
That’s how it works when you own the company. Being a multi millionaire he also doesn’t really care, for him it’s just convenient not needing to order something, but just taking it.

Yeah that would have been good. That, or additional 2x4. It could be real janky under there, but it'll provide support and then be covered by drywall anyways.
Love the house videos. I've always heard use a white screen if you have a super light controlled room. You get more brightness and therefore more contrast.
Yeah, a home theatre was always a dream of mine too, I built mine in the basement, only a 1080p 100" screen, but all for under $600. Waiting till 4k projectors are cheaper. I replaced my 50" 720p plasma though, so it was a huge upgrade.
26:40 Happy for you that we "the community" made this possible, you worked very hard for building LMG with the team. If there is anyone that deserves this amazing gear, it's you! As long you don't quit and spend all your time in there ;)
My uncle had a theater room like this when I was a kid, in his previous house I played Call of Duty BO1 Zombies on it and it freaking awesome. This video was really interesting and nostalgic for me.
The top-end Denon and Marantz receivers have some pretty great upscaling processors in them. You might do a comparison between the Nvidia and the Denon to see which you like better.
I'm going back now and watching these videos to learn what the premo option is and budget it up for our house we're building. (I get a real server rack, small theater room and sound isolated office)
23:00 I recomend some Car Window tint. You can probably find some at a local car parts store / Autozone. I have this on my bedroom windows and if 5% tint isn't enough you can tint the window twice and have a double layer of 5% tint. Works perfectly for me
I felt the same way when I finally bought a house with a home theatre space. I avoided projectors because of the picture quality vs OLED at the time but this one is something I would consider if I ever needed to replace my SONY xbr65a1e. I love the design of those side channel speakers. I have the Klipch version of them and they make not having ceiling speakers work great with Atmos. Also, D-lINK has been a sketchy manufacturer since the 90s. Garbage marketing, quality, and support have made them the lowest on my tier of networking gear just above the spyware gear of we all know who.
Subwoofer port should not be so close to the wall or be blocked by objects. Also, sub waves reflect from walls and there will be areas where these cancel each other out. If you walk around the room you find spots where you can't hear any low frequencies. So sub placement definitely matters.
House content is the best because I learn for a future home. Smart home is my biggest thing but then home networking will be huge. Want to hide all wires away and keep a clean look
I'm pretty proud of my home theater experience. While I don't have the resources Linus does, I'm still sporting 85" Bravia XR wit 9.1.2 Atmos Surround and it is fabulous. I do hope one day to get to this level of home theater. Thanks for this video Linus! I love this kind of stuff!
Gotta add an amp for those towers and center!! I just did last week for the towers (Parasound A21+). Huge difference from bass response to just sound stage and separation from it. Now I just need to save up for the a52+ for the surrounds and center
0:00 : yeah that's pretty much how regular people do; though they do it in their living room on a sheet or a white wall. finally something relatable in these videos
Linus: you could simply use a rasp pi 4 as a controller for those led on back screen, it's a little pain but basically it just screen maps based on a color picker and you can set the points where every you want,i.e green on bottom for grass blue top for sky, you can go as deep as you want to get as big as color aspect as you want would take a long time, I just did rgb setup but having many different tones and brightness of each color will blend better to what you watching. Would love to send you a demo setup if you like. Would be willing send a led strip and pre setup rasp pi for you test out,I'm not trying sell you any service or anything like that just a Linus fan

Seeing Linus appreciate his dream come true from years and years of hard work was the best part of this video, made my day. Great job team!
Use zip togglers from Lowe’s for any drywall mounting. They are a little pricey but I use the for screens, TV’s, and many other AV products that are wall mounted.
I know Linus said in WAN he doesn't really like doing this 'easy' content, but honestly as someone who watches every video - this is my favourite stuff. Always love the vlog stuff and wish you guys made more!
100% agree with you
Same!!!!
Nothing about anything that was on video here seemed to be "easy"...
...sticking in a graphics card into a computer and running benchmarks is extremely "easy" compared to the work that is the content of this video.
Dan: "point it at his left ear."
Linus: "that's gonna look so stupid though."
Dan: "yeah."
Refuses to elaborate further...leaves xD
Do you want maximum audio quality or nice looking speakers?
If you want "both", the closest you can get is something like Genelec 8260 or 8361 which doesn't look bad even when it's pointed directly towards the listener. For satellite setup you could use something like Genelec 8330 if you have good subwoofers. The price might get your eyes a bit moist, though.
@@MikkoRantalainen I don't think Yvonne would like look or price tag of the Genelecs
@@lukebuchwald9252 I think many women actually like the looks of 8000 series Genelecs. The 8260 might be too big but 8330 in white color should be pretty well received in most homes.
That bit was great, Dan banter is the best.
6:05 something about the way Dan just shuffles over in his socks scolding Linus is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time
I'm starting to think that Linus started this TH-cam channel to form the ultimate group of tech geniuses to build his dream home.
Linus media group is just a giant bin of tech to take whenever you need. "Need a 3090? no problem, we got hundreds!"
Finally accomplished, just took 10+ years
Haha yup. And he's acquired and groomed all his sponsors to fill it. Not a bad gig at all but he has worked f'n hard to get here.
Once he is done, he can likely sell the house for triple what he paid. Linus has a new business of buying houses and making them tech havens.
We need to see more of Dan he's such a chill dude
I could watch you guys for hours. The house content has been very entertaining so far!
We need more "Real Talk" segments. The two of them together is fantastic.
Your profile picture shows me you have no common sense
@Don't Read My Profile Photo how bout no
Welcome to the beginning.
@@florichi Mostly trying to cut down on reverb. And I already have twin subs, for clarity. 7.2 at present.
@@tpasco1995 Carpet will only do something above 6-8kHz. If you really want to do something build yourself a ceiling panel filled with 10-15cm insulation like hemp. You need a lot of thickness and quite an area to get reverb down across 250Hz-20kHz, not only the highs.
Upgradeitis!
Congrats brother I could hear it in your voice when you said this is a made it feeling. You make great content and I've been watching for years and know you work you ass off. You employ 80 people and as a business owner know how much work it is
Dan saving the day at 2:01 without saying a word
Love the home theater stuff. Would love to see a series about different tiers/budgets for home theater, similar to the multiple budgets for gamer set ups.
Indeed. The purist, the big spender, the budget minded, the movie watcher-gamer.
This sounds great
When they can't even give proper information in their video for home theater they probably shouldn't be doing it telling people the wrong things
@@ajstruhar2048 what did they get wrong? I know nothing about home theaters so I am genuinely asking
I love the mounting of the side speakers, 3 wall anchors. Each of those wall anchors can hold 50-75 lbs or 22-35kg, complete overkill!
"Thats gonna look so stupid"
"Yeah."
And then just walks off. I love Dan.
Currently setting up my own movie room with a w1070+ projector the one you reviewed years ago, it’s still great!
@Don't Read My Profile Photo k
It's a great idea.
True that! It's getting more common over in my country, just because it makes it so much easier to work with.
We just bought a house and I'm going slightly the other way. Cut plywood to be smaller than the TV, but big enough that it spans three studs. Bolt the plywood to the three studs with three screws each, paint it, then bolt the tv to the plywood in exactly the position you want. A little less elegant than plywood behind the drywall, but works great for a quick fix.
that could make the wall to rigid and cause to much echo in the room.

As someone mentioned in the comments of another new house video, Jake probably has a bed in one of the cupboards.
He's the new Luke. Lives in the basement
I am pretty sure, jake is not real, he is just linus's another personality
And also a good reason to actually use the speaker grills instead of throwing them away like Jake said. I don't use mine but if I had kids they would be covered
Watching this video made me realize how my parents have always given me what I´ve wanted, just like you with your kids, I wish I could get some of that love back especially since my dad´s dream is also having a home theater, but I´m just a broke student, I hope one day I can finally make my dad´s dream come true

Dan: Hopefully these screws are going to be tight enough so this won't fall on Linus's kids.
Linus: What?
Dan: Nothing
Jake: Jesus christ, Dan, that's dark.

This is why Dan is a great addition as well as his technical skills and knowledge, such as audio in this video.
That was so funny. However to be fair linus kids biggest threat is linus dropping things.
I absolutely lost it.

20:56 Dan with the risk assessment skills you love to see it, is there anything he can't do?
Doesn't SVS recommend a foot or two of clearance for the Ultra Towers? Lots of things in this setup seem off.

When you don't have drywall on yet, you put plywood from stud to stud in areas where you will have heavy things mounted on the wall.
Yeah that would have been good. That, or additional 2x4. It could be real janky under there, but it'll provide support and then be covered by drywall anyways.
Love the house videos. I've always heard use a white screen if you have a super light controlled room. You get more brightness and therefore more contrast.

Man i love watching these, the interactions with the crew is fun. Seeing Daddy Linus rangle everyone around is refreshing. Love that Theatre Room!
The enthusiasm of the guys who had to do the screen mounting, is absolutely overwhelming.
Yeah, a home theatre was always a dream of mine too, I built mine in the basement, only a 1080p 100" screen, but all for under $600. Waiting till 4k projectors are cheaper. I replaced my 50" 720p plasma though, so it was a huge upgrade.

My uncle had a theater room like this when I was a kid, in his previous house I played Call of Duty BO1 Zombies on it and it freaking awesome. This video was really interesting and nostalgic for me.
I wonder how long until Dan finally thinks "what have I gotten myself into?" in regards to working at LMG. 😂
That was probably about five minutes into his first day there.
He packed up their clothes and pretty sure he said exactly that.
The top-end Denon and Marantz receivers have some pretty great upscaling processors in them. You might do a comparison between the Nvidia and the Denon to see which you like better.

@@stevengoetz6773 Agreed. And I also might not be so quick to praise the upscaler in the Nvidia unit. It may or may not be that great.

If I had a dollar for every time Linus said "TECHNICALLY we could...in the future. But we don't NEED to...", I could buy his house.
I love the casual friendly jokey relationship between all the staff at LTT, it's a great thing to see!
This new group LTT has on camera for this series is the best, makes content like this so much funnier.
Jake calling Linus just "tips" made me so happy for some reason 3:40
I waited months for this video to happen. The home theater is what interest me the most about your new house.
I'm so happy about Jake and Linus moving together in that new house
Subwoofer port should not be so close to the wall or be blocked by objects. Also, sub waves reflect from walls and there will be areas where these cancel each other out. If you walk around the room you find spots where you can't hear any low frequencies. So sub placement definitely matters.
House content is the best because I learn for a future home. Smart home is my biggest thing but then home networking will be huge. Want to hide all wires away and keep a clean look

Put the woofers immediately behind the couch with the port facing the couch. It vibrates the couch and makes the experience more immersive.
