The more and more people review the new GX and the new Land Cruiser the more I am happy in keeping my Limited 4runner. That said...I bet Toyota listens to the reviewers and makes improvements on both of these vehicles. Lets just hope they don't inflate the price to go along with those improvements
@@jamesdy8345 ohh I realize that but....is this one worth the higher price when its interior does not match that higher price? My 4runner interior is outdated but its quality matches or exceeds the price I paid for the vehicle.
Agree 100% Josh. Grand Highlander interior looks much nicer than the Lexus TX. Very disappointed at the direction Lexus is going, flimsy plastic panels that actually move when pressed on the center console of new GX, something you don't see on my 2011 GX.
@@joshjamescars Hi Josh. Have you been inside the GX 550 luxury Plus. I've driven the GX Premium Plus and I decided to purchase the 2024 LC with the premium package. Agree the LC interior is very well done. Curious about the GX Luxury Plus vs the Premium Plus you reviewed. Besides a Mark Levinson stereo and what I consider way nicer wheels than the Premium Plus I would like to know what the Luxury Plus interior is like compared to the Premium Plus. The Luxury Plus $10K more but is the interior in the GX550 Luxury Plus the same as the Premium Plus? I'll reach out to my dealer and ask but I think it a review of the Luxury Plus might be warranted. Thoughts?
@Martine500 The Luxury+ has the same dashboard, door cards, and center console; the difference is in the semi-aniline leather upholstery versus NuLuxe but not a big difference IMO. Also, the wheels are nicer but they’re 22” with super low profile tires which makes for a super crashy ride. Not for me.
Makes a used GX look like an even better proposition. I still don't like buying the first model year of any car if i can avoid it. There are usually some concerns that get ironed out in the subsequent updates. Also 70k for a 4 cylinder is just crazy, even with the hybrid system.
I was on the GX 550 hype train but they were right at the edge of my price range. Test drove a GX 460 and it is just a much nicer place to be. Ended up picking up a used 2021 Premium with 15k miles for 48k. I’ve had it for about 3 months now and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned, great off road too!
The Landcruiser Premium is absolutely gorgeous and a great SUV. The engine is outstandingly quick, smooth, and has a high tow rating. Great review Josh.
@@joshjamescars Yes. I just received my allocation on a Landcruiser Premium. I am thoroughly impressed with the new Landcruiser with the Premium Pkg. I'm coming from a '22 4Runner Limited which is a great vehicle as well, However, does not have the performance or ride quality of the LC. Or the sharp looks.
I was on Land Cruiser waiting list. Dealer (s) kept moving goal post and added $5k to sale. After diving one I fell in love. You can feel the power and quality. Ultimately I went for RAV4 Prime because it fits my driving needs better. (And I was getting tired of dealer games) May change my mind in a few years.
Yeah I’m not a big fan of buying first year for many reasons but the dealer games being one of them. As soon as demand dies down, so does the amount of BS they’re able to pull on people. And as a Rav4 Prime owner myself, I can say you made a great choice there!
Really appreciate your videos Josh. I’m a Toyota FJ owner and I am stoked about the new GX 550. Just put my deposit down. It’s going to be my first Lexus. One of the things I love about my FJ is the rugged interior and I’m actually glad that new GX is trending in that direction. I skipped the Land Cruiser because no third row seats and limited tow
I completely agree with you in every way! I checked out both vehicles and have exactly the same sentiments. They did right on the LC and F’d up the GX550.
Thanks Josh. This is food for thought. Land Cruiser is a classic and has been around for years. We used to have a Mitsubishi SR that vehicle was awesome it could get you anywhere you wanted to go. Not sure if it was a Land Cruiser competitor back in the day. The quality definitely raises eyebrows like the prices of new vehicles these days. I live pretty close to a Lexus dealership I have not seen a 550 on the road. I see everything else but not the new GX.
Thank you for sharing honest sentiments with your viewers. You’re 100% correct I was so disappointed when I saw the Lexus. I walked out that amount of money and that interior I would go to Land Rover any day of the week.
i heard so many things in this that i didn’t hear in other LC reviews, i wonder why?! great review, how was the headliner and were there any “fit and finish” creaks in the interior?
I do like the dashboard and the smaller screen with the actual physical buttons. I'm waiting for a 4Runner Trailhunter though. Wish it had this dashboard. The Tacoma carryover dash is cheaper looking. I like everything else. We'll see.
I have a 1958 LC. It's shocking to me where they cheaped out. For example, they have hard plastic everywhere but soft touch along he top dash part under the front windshield which no human will ever touch or use. But where your elbows go it's solid plastic. In addition, the seat is probably the most uncomfortable seat I've ever sat in. There's zero lumbar support and it's a very short seat. So for any tall drivers I'm 6'4 do not get the 1958. The Land Cruiser Land Cruiser model at least has a seat manual adjustment to make it fit a normal human being underneath your knees. Not surprising. The dealership didn't even know this or show me this. And I'm seeing it for the first time now. The Toyota dealers are absolutely pathetic with their knowledge of the products that they're selling. Lastly, for the price or charging even for the cheapest 1958 version, they should have put these as basic features. If I paid $40,000 for the vehicle (which I should have) I would expect this cheap quality. But not when you have to spend $67,000 out the door
@@cheintz091 no I wasn't. I didn't know to look for every single detail And there were no extensive videos out yet cuz I was an early adopter. I don't have any regrets. I would buy it again. However, I would probably get the Land Cruiser Land Cruiser edition had I known that the 58 would be so Spartan
Toyota/Lexus pricing has become insane paired with decreased quality. $70k would have got a fully loaded 2023 GX 460, now it'll barely get you a Toyota, and GX 550 tops out $81k+. Also the trunk for both the Land Cruiser and GX 550 is ridiculous and completely ruins the purpose of this type of vehicle. I think the new design looks great from far away but once you get up close and start thinking of usability it is a dumpster fire. Also Lexus doesn't have a good quality road SUV anymore, the TX is probably both the ugliest and most boring SUV at the same time.
Guess use are not in Australia gee price between any Lexus and Toyota in Australia is in the hundred thousands and the Lexus is at least twice as much as a Toyota
Looking for a used 23 gx 460. Dealers already figured out it's a gem a d asking 58k for premium with 16k miles. Waiting g impatiently as I don't have that money with 7% apr
@kylekraemer1151 I never care about a screen that distracts and reduces ur vision range along with headache caused by blue light from screens( u think it's white led backlight but they r all blue and proven to cause headache) I just wanted to get the last year! Once I move out of NYC ity I'm getting a 88-92 pontiac all analog dash with fluroscent back light for night drive back to my childhood. Gx is for my children comfort safety reliability
I sat in a 1958 base version and i though current 4runner has better interior so i walked away disappointed. I then walked across the street to the lexus dealership and checked out the GX and was much more impressed with that... maybe i'm fortunate i dont have the older GX to compare it to.
The 1958 and Land Cruiser trims are so vastly different. I don’t even know why they have the 1958 when it’s supposed to be the “bare bones Land Cruiser” but costs around $57K. The GX550 is definitely nicer than the 1958, but the mid-trim Land Cruiser trim is also meaningfully nicer than the GX550 IMO.
@@joshjamescars I went to check out the mid trim Land Cruiser today, you're right, it's much nicer than the 1958. I don't know if it's "nicer" than the GX, but it sure is better looking, less awkward.
You know what makes it look more premium? Some actual tactile buttons. Audi previous gen's clickwheel had real metal, clicky buttons that felt expensive. The only button that makes no sense is that volume button placement but hey at least you get one..
@steverogers7211 I agree entirely!!! That also costs a lot more to do than all-screen controls too so there’s Toyota spending more on the ergonomic experience than Lexus.
Take the Land Cruiser, subtract the hybrid engine, replace with GX550 V6, and add Lexus noise suppression = Winning Combo I would buy at 70-90k, easy. GX550 interior is primitive compared to the Land Cruiser. You are spot on in your review. I really hope Lexus takes this feedback and improves on the GX550 interior.
The Lexus doesn’t have much NVH isolation, unfortunately. When I test drove it I was hearing so much of the outside world… I think because they’re focusing on making the best off road vehicle, they really didn’t pay attention to the on-road manners. So that to say, I don’t imagine there’s much difference between them in that respect.
Good review, thank you. One comment about “the million in stock” at the dealer maybe because of the high price. Agree, the high prices will keep,a lot of folks away. I have been looking, nationally, for either mid grade or FE models, and when I looked at the inventory at Cedar Park online, there really only a few available. What’s available are some 1958s (base model) and Black exteriors of the step up models. For a lot us a black exterior becomes an oven in the summer heat and shows so much dirt or “puddle stains” that we won’t buy one again if we have made that mistake in the past. While black looks great, I will never repeat that mistake (for me at least) again. I suspect Toyota over-invested in black exteriors for their initIal run. Almost everywhere, the other colors are still “need to order and wait”. This will probably change in a few months, but for now, there is little inventory outside of 1958s and black exterior step-up trims.
@@joshjamescars disappointing to hear about the NVH isolation but makes sense if off-road is their focus (which is silly in my opinion). What would you recommend for a luxury SUV that emphasizes refinement/NVH and luxury? My family is in a similar situation to yours. I saw your QX60 video, but not sure on that verses a GV80, XC60, or even Q5 or X5. GX460 if not for the old infotainment and styling. Keep up the great content!
@duckbow Any of those wold be great (though Q5 is really dated at this point), but with all of them I would definitely lease. Genesis’ resale is worse than the Germans and Volvo’s reliability is usually ranked near the bottom with Range Rover. They make beautiful interiors and I loved my XC90 but that’s a car you borrow for 3 years and give back afterward.
It now like Toyota and Lexus have been playing Opposite Day when it’s come to which product is nicer it feels like SpongeBob and Patrick are behind planning their new products
I own the 2024 LC with the premium package. I can see where one could be misled due to the warning sticker. The cargo area features a flat load floor with approximately 7 inches of additional storage space adjacent to the rear hatch, running the width of the cargo area (its at the very back and under the cargo floor mat, under the board that was discovered in your video ). This design provides a handy and sturdy storage solution that can support a significant amount of weight without risk of damage. I can't conceive of how you could put enough load on it to break it. It does not apply to whole cargo area. I've seen plenty of reviews where 2024 LC owners are putting refrigerators and all kinds of camping gear in the back with no issue.
That doesn’t change the fact that you have to seriously plan how and what you can store your items. A lot of off-roaders want to put heavy gear and appliances in the back like refrigerators, tools, spare wheels and parts, etc. and for them, the weight restriction in certain parts of the vehicle makes it a non-starter. I agree with you that it’s probably not an issue for most LC buyers who will never do that, but for the vehicle’s primary target demographic, it’s an issue.
I have to jump in here to support your observation with my own. We went to Lexus to see the new RX , compared to the last generation, it’s horrible, I have yet to hear from any other TH-camr to point this out except Jos. I feel more justified hoping into various Camry and RAV4 models as taxis in their price point.
Most reviewers are dependent upon keeping Toyota in their good graces or they risk not getting cars. This is just a side hobby for me and I don’t have a relationship with them at all, so I have more freedom than most when it comes to what I say.
Lexus ES owner, here, and I am so disheartened by your take on the GX 550. And you aren't the only one. I have been shopping for an overland vehicle, and by the time I kit out a Jeep, Bronco, 4Runner, or whatever, it is at or more expensive than the GX. I am PROBABLY going to get one anyway because I do need it primarily as an overland vehicle, but it is depressing to feel like the Lexus brand is cutting corners. If I buy a Lexus, my expectations are that it simply lasts forever (and looks good doing that). But the V6 engine issues and textured plastics (I guess I'll make my own wood highlights, Lexus?) have me doing the math on this purchase over and over again ... and it still comes out with the GX on top, but now I'm a lot less excited about it.
Have you thought about getting an almost new GX460 and building from there? It won’t look as cool as the 550 but with the money you’d have left over after buying the 460 (at like $50-60 versus $80 on a GX550), you could kit that thing out and make it into anything you want, WITH the old luxury interior and the bulletproof V8. Or same with a final year 24 4Runner. The 4.0 V6 + 5 speed auto isn’t as great as the 4.6L V8 and 6 speed auto, of course, but again the cost to buy one versus the Land Cruiser or GX will give you a ton of money left over to build you dream rig.
@@joshjamescars Two things keep me from it. (1) The premium gas price here on Big Island (Hawaii) and (2) the resale value of 460's seems to be very, very stong. I have taken a couple peeks around looking for a 460 for less money, but unless I'm willing to go back beyond Android Auto years (2022), it isn't as good of a deal. I suppose if the "right 460" were to come along, I could do an aftermarket option on the infotainment, but the V8 + Expensive gas market would be a constant "luxury tax."
@zaq_hack4987 Heyyy! I grew up in Honolulu (parents still live there) and have family in Hilo! With the additional context, do know that you NEED to use premium gas in the GX550 (and the new Land Cruiser for some reason) and it gets worse mileage in the real world than the V8. I can consistently do 16-20 in my 460, and owners of the GX550 on forums are reporting 12-17. The V6 is a smaller engine but needs to work way harder to move a bigger, heavier car around. So to your note about the premium gas price, you’ll probably spend more on gas with the 550 on top of the much higher vehicle price.
@@joshjamescars What I've seen on gas mileage is that it SHOULD get 19-20 mpg and does before it has bearing issues. 12 mpg is a tell-tale for "You are about to have a long repair on this V6." And truth be told, this is the most concerning thing to me about the GX 550 ... and will probably push me waiting until the 2025 model if I decide to go that way. BUT ... speaking of Honolulu, I did find a used 460 over there ... and may hop over to go check it out. We'll see. You've almost convinced me!
@zaq_hack4987 That’s not necessarily true. Go ask anyone on the island with a 4Runner what kind of mileage they actually get and I’d bet money it’ll be lower than the EPA rating. These big body on frame trucks just don’t get good mileage, and especially once you add a turbo into the mix. Also, you’re buying a $75-$90K car depending on how you load it up… if you have the money to comfortably afford that, you should be able to afford a big gas bill.
$71K! My girlfriend got a 2022 X5 with the M sport and Shadowline package for the same price. C'mon Toyota keep it in the low $60's range. No hate at all love the old school Land Cruisers but I feel like they cheeped out with the plastic bits. Your GX with the V8 is how it should be very beautiful! great Vid! Lexus parts bin!!! LMAO!!!
I agree entirely! But cars have gotten more expensive all around. Good on your girlfriend for getting her X5 when she did. A new X5 today with real leather, the premium package, and driver assist package is up around $80K now. So in line with GX, LOL.
I agree- I like the interior of this Landcruiser a lot better than the GX550. It's a shame though I would never buy a 4 cylinder turbo SUV, let alone one for $70k.
Sadly that’s where they’re all going. The Chevy Silverado has a turbo-I4 now and the market will continue to go further that way until EVs are able to replace gas cars entirely.
@@joshjamescars legitimately considering getting rid of my pickup truck (which I rarely use) to buy a second '22-23 GX460 to park in the garage as a backup or replacement for when my current '22 GX dies
I got to sit in a new LC last week, was very impressed. Another feature is the back seat climate zone. Digital controls with vents overhead for the back seats and cargo area. The GX 550 doesnt have that…
I agree, but i wish the landcruiser had the tech like the massaging seats on the gx550, and atleast panoramic roof. The major reasons id choose the gx550 is the panoramic roof, the massaging seats and the KDSS..if they were on the landcruiser id choose it.
I hear you on the panoramic roof, though it doesn’t open. It’s just a fixed glass panel and so I prefer the smaller moonroof that actually opens. As for the massaging seats… I don’t find them to be terribly effective since it’s basically just airbags inflating and deflating. Not nearly as great as the German cars.
Awesome video!!!! 😉😀 That spec is perfect, but yes, maybe too expensive. These things would be selling lot hot cakes if they priced it a little lower. Land Cruiser museum cap? I can't wait for the video of that! ;)
Right! Like $55K or even $60K for the mid trim Land Cruiser and they’d have a home run. Not for $70K. And oh man, the Land Cruiser heritage museum was just something else!!!
Josh - sorry if i missed it but did you get to drive one of the land cruisers yet? I"m actually referencing one of your old videos where you compare the cost to the gx460.... I walked away from buying a land cruiser today because at 70k, it simply did not even remotely seem to be the same "value for money" as the gx460. GX's were around 64k new and you could get them easily at 60k brand new. They feel like a bank vault inside, the v8 is smooth as butter, and the KDSS gave great on road feel. The new land cruiser has an odd combo of not feeling as good on road (truck like, and rough over certain bumps), and then having this weird hybrid motor that sounds like it should be in a crossover, not a truck. Am I crazy? I walked away thinking a lightly used 22/23 GX is 10000% the move.
I 100% agree with everything you’ve said here. I haven’t driven a Land Cruiser but I have driven the GX which is the premium model and I didn’t think it should cost $70K… so the Land Cruiser being cheaper with a smaller engine definitely isn’t worth $70K IMO. Also, you’re not wrong. The 1UR-FE in the GX460 was a proper truck engine. The T24A turbo hybrid I4 is shared with everything from the Toyota Crown, Grand Highlander/RX, etc. so you’re actually right that it is a crossover engine.
I don’t know if there are good Land Cruiser vibes the way there used to be. I say this as the biggest Land Cruiser fan qand owner of a 150-series GX, but with the world moving to smaller and electrified engines (which is a good thing for the environment), these trucks are so heavily compromised just to remain on the market in countries with strict emissions regulation. Meanwhile, if you’re a fanboy who can only tolerate good Land Cruiser vibes, my channel isn’t the place for you, and that’s okay if you don’t want to watch!
Like I've said and Josh agrees, the GX460 is the best GX that Lexus has ever made with the V-8. If you can afford a vehicle like the GX460, who cares what the gasoline costs. It's not an economy car. If that's what you want, buy a Prius. LOL
Yep!! That last part is spot on-it’s a gas guzzler but if you’re buying a $70K car, you should easily be able to afford the gas cost too! That said, I love my Toyota hybrids for how efficient they are! 😂
Crazy how not even two years ago I was able to get a brand new, made in Japan, 2023 4Runner TRD Sport 4x4 in Ice Cap color for $44,700 and this LC is so much more expensive. Obviously this LC is a more premium SUV being a Land Cruiser but it's definitely not almost $25K more premium. And speaking of premium, this LC requires high octane 93 fuel. Hardly economical, might as well get the GX550 and get a better value with more power from the twin turbo V6.
I fully agree. Just ONE year ago, I bought my GX460 nicely optioned for $64K and this LC is still more expensive. Also, to your fuel note, yes it does require premium, however to get a GX550 with similar equipment you’re looking at $10-15K more ($80-85K) so I’m not sure if I’d say that’s a better value. They’re both ridiculously expensive and neither provides a great value per dollar, IMO.
None of the many driving reviews of the '24 Land Cruiser said the ride was stiff. They said it was on the cushy side and that tires would squeal on fast turns like a 30 year old softly sprung Buick.
The two replies here wouldn’t surprise me. That was my exact experience with the GX550. It rides like an off-roader with all the articulation that you need when off-roading but that can make the on-road ride unpleasant.
Personally I’d go for a GX460 but mainly because I don’t need or want the size of an LX. The GX is the perfect footprint for me. With the LX, just know that you’re buying a 3-4 year old car (versus 1 year old or less with the GX), and so even if it’s L-Certified, you need to have it fully inspected by an independent mechanic. When cars get to that point, they’re only as good as the maintenance that the first owner did on it. If it was treated like a lease, pass. And same if it went to a quick lube place.
Well...they say the cause of the price skyrocket: inflation 🤧🙄(which i don't believe) But the interior looks way better than GX tho that's for sure, but a LC hybrid? Why..like.. who told them that folks want to drive a off road hybrid truck. Toyota forgot that they sell cars to African countries and Middle east countries where the roads conditions are not that great etc etc.
I know! It’ll be really interesting to see how that works in the long term. Though, it is worth noting that the Land Cruiser does get the V6 in countries that don’t get the GX. Here in the US, the V6 being exclusive to the GX is the only way they can credibly charge more for it. Because if the LC had the V6 there would literally be no reason to buy the GX. Like the TX. The only reason IMO to buy it is for the V6 PHEV drivetrain…
70k for a 4 cylinder banger with extra weight of a battery but nicer interior, or 85k for a 6 cylinder banger with mediocre interior 😅 between these two, the grand highlander seems like a better option.
@georgetown8986 I love Grand Seiko… they’re very different than the Swiss brands but the meticulous craftsmanship and the artistry is way, way beyond anything Rolex or omega does… at least for under $100K. 😅
Thanks for the video, I have to agree the Landcruiser (Prado) is a better car. I think Lexus has lost the plot with many of it's vehicles. In Australia we will get the Landcruiser with the 2.8 litre turbo diesel with 48 volt hibrid. Really looking forward to a true all wheel drive that can take on the dirt roads straight out of the factory. I am turned off with the latest strategy from Toyota/Lexus to provide very large cars with 4 cylinder petrol motors. People will not pay premium prices for that down grade in Australia and I suspect the USA market as we both have large countries to travel.
Most of the people I see who are buying in the US are buying mainly because they need to be seen in the latest and greatest… not because they want quality or an outstanding engine. I think that’s why we’re starting to see demand die down… those folks have bought and the rest of us are waiting to see how they prove out in the real world.
After seeing this video on the Land Cruiser and your review on the 550 Premium+, I wondered if you would be willing to give the 550 Luxury or Luxury+ a try. I feel that Lexus split the GX line into 3 flavors and everyone that hates it tries the Premium+ because it’s about the same price as the old GX, however, the Premium/+ are the normal GX’s, a truck with Luxury touches, and the Luxury/+ are going to be more about features and overall opulence to be more of a full on Luxury truck like the old GX.
I’ve been in the Luxury+ and Overtrail+ and not much changes about the interior across the board. Same plastics, same black-only interior, though you do get semi-aniline seats in the Luxury and Luxury+. The other thing about the Luxury+ is that it rides on 22” wheels with ultra low profile tires which owners report ruins the ride because you feel every single pebble on the road without a thicker sidewall on the tires.
I actually prefer that because in my GX which has the cup holders spread horizontally, cups and bottles get in the way of trying to reach the controls that are directly in front of them, so ergonomically this works better which I think is why you see this layout in a lot of cars.
Please correct me if I’m wrong- in the car dedicated for trips, off-roading you have a limit for the cargo weight? In this case this is a mall crawler.
I’m sorry I don’t understand the question here. The weight limit is 150 pounds in the cargo area because the hybrid battery is underneath the cargo area floor and it would seem Toyota didn’t reinforce the floor to support more weight.
Toyota of Cedar Park is the best Toyota dealer in the Austin area. I have had the best service and buying new cars here. Best thing is they don't price over MSRP. Sure they add window tint and stuff like that but in Texas that is a must and it saves me from having to take it somewhere else to get done. Only place I will buy a Toyota.
I’m suprised you didn’t mention the major difference between the Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX - The Lexus has a V6 engine and The Land Cruiser does not. In regard to the cheap/monotone design of Lexus lately, I think this is a reflection of contemporary design. I live in a neighbourhood in Toronto and notice every new house going up is ultra modern - whereas 10 years ago it was all French Chateau design. In other words, minimalism is in.
Nothing about the mechanical difference here but I think that difference is known. Also, there’s a difference between minimalist with good quality materials and cheap materials. RH and Arhaus does minimalist with quality materials and Ikea does minimalist with cheap materials. They are not the same, and Lexus is more on the Ikea side these days.
Toyota destroyed the legacy of both the GX and the Land Cruiser. Less value for the money with cheap plastics and potentially troublesome powertrain. NA V6 or V8 was the best!
@@johnpotter4210 Other opinion makes you sick? You need to relax. If you can't handle other opinions, let the adults have a discussion. Just because it's 2024 doesn't mean we all have to drive electric cars, hybrids, or turbo / hybrid drivetrains. We are consumers and we get call out companies for producing products we don't want. No one is forcing you which car to buy.
To me it makes not sense that the Land Cruiser chase engine with Tacoma y 4runner when the Land Cruiser is heavier, bigger and more expensive. That makes Land Cruiser slower???? No way no way
Isn't Lexus supposed to be the *_luxury_* division of Toyota? While I wouldn't necessarily consider this LC to be luxurious, the GX 550 _definitely_ is *NOT* based upon your two timely and informative reviews. The stripping or penny-pinching removal of GX 550 luxury seems to be the complete antithesis of everything Lexus used to stand for. Ultimately, consumers will have to decide ... so long as there are other viable manufacturers ...
It is, or used to be. But the TX would seem to suggest that Lexus now just wants to be different but not better… which is so strange given their roots that you call out! And I agree fully that this LC is not luxurious. It’s typical (and good) for the mainstream Toyota product.
@@joshjamescars Perusing Lexus USA's Pressroom (under about/history), the last mention of 'luxury' was in 2019 for their LY 650 Yacht. They should be careful -- focusing simply on 'differences' can eventually lead to buyer indifference towards their products.
A lot of dealers are sitting on stock now, and some are even discounting now that those who needed to be first to buy have bought and the rest are waiting for them to cut the crap or for the second model year LOL. So now might be the time to buy (though I always recommend not buying the first model year)
Yeah. GX pricing went up by about 20-25% with the new generation when you compare comparably spec’d models, making room for this LC at old GX460 pricing.
The whole point of these vehicles is to be able to get a lot of gear in the back for trips. You lose so much space with the batteries in the back. Not as horrible as the ridiculous sequoia rear storage area. But it is still a fail. I will keep my ‘23 gx460 with the V8. Also, why are they not making full time 4wd anymore? Another fail.
I bought a 2007 Lexus GS 350 new and I have never seen Lexus as a contender to luxury. I have driven loaners from IS 350, RX 350. UX, NX and the materials Lexus uses is cheap plastic., even the leather is cheap However, my GS 350 was reliable for 14 years of ownership. It was in its 15th. year mark where I came upon issue after issue. Anyway, I am so glad to finally get rid of it. OMG! We finally got to see your husband. I knew he was white.. Asian guys tend to always be with white guys. Why is that?
I think old Lexus like your GS was luxury, though Japanese luxury not European luxury. The way Grand Seiko is to Rolex. And Haha! He’s half white, half Hispanic. Not really sure why that is, honestly!
So now, if you want to upgrade from Lexus, you go Land Cruiser. Want to downgrade, go gx550. 😢😢😢 or the plastic TX. Almost feels like Toyota and Lexus are about to spin off.
Basically that! And I feel like the Grand Highlander is an upgrade over the TX with its awful interior too… not sure what the selling point of Lexus is beyond the badge and a bigger but maybe not better engine these days.
Love it or hate it, emission standards have mandated this. All manufacturers are going this way. The great thing about the Landcruiser is the engine has been around for decades in their commercial Hino trucks so it is bulletproof. And in the Landcruiser, it is quick and has a high tow capacity.
@georgetown8986 That’s not right. The Land Cruiser in the US only comes with the T24A which was first used in 2021 in the NX350. I also just got out of one and it drives rather poorly.
And the 2025 Lexus LS500 looks too much like a Camry. I think Lexus has lost some of the "magic" of the previous generation. All the sharp edges and curves and angles for no reason. When the CEO of Toyota said no "boring" cars, I think the designers got the wrong idea. Example: the hideous gigantic front grille. (It looks much better now though) LOL
Sure, but in the Subaru Ascent you get a CVT and a non-hybrid 2.5L turbo engine on an old Outback chassis. I don’t disagree with you that the Land Cruiser is overpriced, but it is a significantly better car than the Ascent.
What’s with that ugly probiscus at the end on the bumpers? Can you do a short video about them, they are so hideous, worth doing a video of the different models? GX has it as well.🤢
150lbs WTF!?!? 2 of my medium size dogs are 150 🤯 GX “extra” screen size is wasted by the climate control “buttons” Also you definitely want the 18’s. 20’s 😞
I know! Yeah exactly at your dogs. But it makes sense when you think about that there’s basically the bottom half of a MacBook sit tin under the cargo floor and would you want to stack a bunch of stuff on top of a MacBook? Probably not.
@@joshjamescars ugh I guess I’ll just stick with my V8 Toyota for now then No MacBook like parts, but it runs on e85 and has over 1,200lb cargo capacity
Wait!? That’s John? Doesn’t look like the guy in the old photo with a mustang 😂. And if your cut your fingernails realllyyyy short, the Lexus plastic won’t sound as scratchy. (Again 😂). Now back to the video…
The more and more people review the new GX and the new Land Cruiser the more I am happy in keeping my Limited 4runner. That said...I bet Toyota listens to the reviewers and makes improvements on both of these vehicles. Lets just hope they don't inflate the price to go along with those improvements
Great choice there. Improvements may happen but we’ll never see another truck that feels as solid as the 5th gen (and previous) 4Runners.
Yhe 2025 GX 550 is a whole different beast compared to the 4Runner. It's way smoother. Once you take it for a spin, you'll see what I mean.
Oh yeah, that was on full display in the TX. The whole center console flexes like Tupperware.
100%. Even with the prices of used GXs going up, they’re still a bargain relative to the price of a new Land Cruiser or GX.
@@Dinguslordx love it, I have a 21 as well. Sounds like you got a great deal my friend
“A fool and his money are easily separated!”
Appreciate the brutally honest review. Looking forward to a driving review if you can make that happen.
Yes! Definitely hope to!
planning to continue thoroughly maintaining my '18 GX; hoping to make it my last vehicle purchase.
I know mine won’t be my last but I hope to keep it alongside anything that may come in the future.
Great review. The Land Cruiser has always been a premium and flagship model for Toyota.
This new model drives outstandingly well as well.
The Landcruiser Premium is absolutely gorgeous and a great SUV. The engine is outstandingly quick, smooth, and has a high tow rating. Great review Josh.
Have you driven a US-spec version? I found it to be completely the opposite… full review coming next Friday.
Good to know! And glad you love it!
I love your videos Josh!! Keep them coming 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much! Glad you’re enjoying!
I was on Land Cruiser waiting list. Dealer (s) kept moving goal post and added $5k to sale. After diving one I fell in love. You can feel the power and quality.
Ultimately I went for RAV4 Prime because it fits my driving needs better. (And I was getting tired of dealer games)
May change my mind in a few years.
Congrats!! I always say buy what you love, regardless of what anyone here on TH-cam says! I’m sure you’ll love it!
Beautiful interior color.
Looking forward to when (if) you post a review after driving one.
Yes! Definitely hope to get one out on the road!
I completely agree with you in every way! I checked out both vehicles and have exactly the same sentiments. They did right on the LC and F’d up the GX550.
Yes!!! Completely agreed.
I don’t see many new GXs here either and this is where I would expect to see them more often.
I agree, the LC stands out more outside and inside than the GX.
Thank you for sharing honest sentiments with your viewers. You’re 100% correct I was so disappointed when I saw the Lexus. I walked out that amount of money and that interior I would go to Land Rover any day of the week.
Seriously!! It’s terrible.
i heard so many things in this that i didn’t hear in other LC reviews, i wonder why?! great review, how was the headliner and were there any “fit and finish” creaks in the interior?
Headliner is standard Toyota fare, the cheaper fabric type that’s in my Rav4 and the new GX and TX.
YEP! Exactly at the fully loaded GX460. I paid $64,500 for mine and for that I can’t even get a mid-trim Land Cruiser today.
And this is a problem only of Toyota correct?? Rest of the cars are SOO CHEAP today…
Toyota knows how to milk it's brand quality perception
+1
Guess use are not in Australia gee price between any Lexus and Toyota in Australia is in the hundred thousands and the Lexus is at least twice as much as a Toyota
I’m glad you said it! I was starting to feel like a jerk for wanting the GX 550 but hating the cheap long interior. Glad to know I’m not crazy!
Right!! I’m with you, It’s so cheap.
Looking for a used 23 gx 460. Dealers already figured out it's a gem a d asking 58k for premium with 16k miles. Waiting g impatiently as I don't have that money with 7% apr
If you don't care about infotainment, you could get a '21 for low to mid 40s. CPO as well

what? I bought new GX460 Premium Plus with 0 on odometer this March for 56k$ (12k$ off MSRP). guess I was lucky.
@@azpekt yeah you did great, can I ask where you bought?
Yeah interesting the volume knob is only for the US spec.
@steverogers7211 I agree entirely!!! That also costs a lot more to do than all-screen controls too so there’s Toyota spending more on the ergonomic experience than Lexus.
@AlphaOmega33 That’s interesting I didn’t realize that!
HAHAHA! Comment of the week award right here.
LC the way better option for me in any level of trim. That being said I picked up a 23 GX 460 two months ago And very glad I did
I could not be happier that I bought my GX when I did. These are great but there’s no comparison.
The GX 550 doesnt have that…
Yes! The GX550 can have that, but only on certain trims and it’s an extra cost option.
Great Video 👍🏼
Awesome video!!!! 😉😀 That spec is perfect, but yes, maybe too expensive. These things would be selling lot hot cakes if they priced it a little lower.
Land Cruiser museum cap? I can't wait for the video of that! ;)
Right! Like $55K or even $60K for the mid trim Land Cruiser and they’d have a home run. Not for $70K. And oh man, the Land Cruiser heritage museum was just something else!!!
Boston area dealerships are charging 10k over MSRP for mid-trim model. There is no inventory.
Insane. Our dealers seem to always have stock selling at MSRP. Different market conditions, I guess.
Recently took delivery of a wind chill pearl LC mid trim and the soft touch materials and seats is hard not to love it more compared to the GX550
Congratulations!!!
I consider hard buttons more premium than touchscreen buttons which feel cheap and cheesy to me.
Could not agree more!
Soooooo glad that I brought the last model year of the GX 460 and did not wait for the junky and expensive GX 550!
Agreed!!! And same here!
I only wish that the Land Cruiser Had that 3.4 V6 from the GX550, that I'd buy over the hybrid
I wish they had e-KDSS in the LC.
Yeah, it’s annoying that they’re making it a Lexus exclusive feature when a $40K 4Runner TRD Off Road used to be able to have hydraulic KDSS.
Thanks for taking the time to make a video. I feel you spent so much time and energy dogging the GX that you diminished the good Land Cruiser vibes.
Exactly... spot on the new Lexus is not upscale... Kia, Hyundai, Mazda blow it away at a much lower cost
They’re both ridiculously expensive and neither provides a great value per dollar, IMO.
read that the Land Cruiser has a very stiff ride and that's a deal breaker for a lot of non-offroad buyers.
It’s not stiff. I’ve driven it, very comfortable.
I’d have to disagree with you on the Lexus interior. But to each its own. I like both.
Josh, between a used GX460 and LX 570 what would you go for?
Personally I’d go for a GX460 but mainly because I don’t need or want the size of an LX. The GX is the perfect footprint for me. With the LX, just know that you’re buying a 3-4 year old car (versus 1 year old or less with the GX), and so even if it’s L-Certified, you need to have it fully inspected by an independent mechanic. When cars get to that point, they’re only as good as the maintenance that the first owner did on it. If it was treated like a lease, pass. And same if it went to a quick lube place.
@joshjamescars thank you Josh. Appreciate your opinion.
The LC you reviewed is more expensive than the GX as well. So, probably it is supposed to be better?
Yes and no-the GX goes up to $86K where the Land Cruiser is basically fully loaded at $70K.
Well...they say the cause of the price skyrocket: inflation 🤧🙄(which i don't believe)
But the interior looks way better than GX tho that's for sure, but a LC hybrid? Why..like.. who told them that folks want to drive a off road hybrid truck.
The choice is not a fun one!!! No such thing as no compromise cars anymore.
*Answer: 4-cylinder engine. That's how*
I think there’s more to it than that. The hybrid system in totality is probably more given the extra componentry and the battery.
Is the gentleman in the green shirt wearing a black OP?
Nope! That is a Grand Seiko GMT. :)
@@joshjamescars GS makes a sharp watch. One I’ve never looked into very closely. Thanks for the response, Josh!
@georgetown8986 I love Grand Seiko… they’re very different than the Swiss brands but the meticulous craftsmanship and the artistry is way, way beyond anything Rolex or omega does… at least for under $100K. 😅
@@joshjamescars That's what I have heard. They sure have a presence to them when you see them in the metal. 👆👆👆
To play devils advocate but does the Landcruiser have massage seats as the new GX 😂
It does not but I don’t find Lexus’ massaging seats to be as effective as the Europeans since it’s just the lumbar airbags inflating and deflating.
@@joshjamescarsdude, this is the kind of detailed differences people come here for. Keep it up Josh.
I don’t like the placement of the cup holders. It was designed for the passenger with two drinks.
I will wait for the 2025 year model.
I think that’s a smart move. I never buy first year.
@@joshjamescarsVolvo team for Life well just got my first Volvo. But it’s cool so far
Toyota destroyed the legacy of both the GX and the Land Cruiser.
Less value for the money with cheap plastics and potentially troublesome powertrain.
NA V6 or V8 was the best!

Other opinion makes you sick? You need to relax. If you can't handle other opinions, let the adults have a discussion.
Just because it's 2024 doesn't mean we all have to drive electric cars, hybrids, or turbo / hybrid drivetrains. We are consumers and we get call out companies for producing products we don't want.
No one is forcing you which car to buy.
To me it makes not sense that the Land Cruiser chase engine with Tacoma y 4runner when the Land Cruiser is heavier, bigger and more expensive. That makes Land Cruiser slower???? No way no way
That’s how they get you to spend the extra $15K going up to a GX550! It’s intentional.
I was going to buy one but greedy dealership putting 10k above msrp! No thank you!
A lot of dealers are sitting on stock now, and some are even discounting now that those who needed to be first to buy have bought and the rest are waiting for them to cut the crap or for the second model year LOL. So now might be the time to buy (though I always recommend not buying the first model year)
$70K??? Dang my GX460 wasn't even $70K
Yeah. GX pricing went up by about 20-25% with the new generation when you compare comparably spec’d models, making room for this LC at old GX460 pricing.
Maybe worth $55k, not $71k.
Agreed!
So much hard plastic in a 70k car
You said it!!
This is full time 4WD, as is the GX and certain new 4Runner grades will be just as before.
@@joshjamescars Thank you Josh.
71k? For 4cylinder engine, and more hard plastics. And I’m not a fan of the new exterior design.
That’s the price of new cars these days.
4 cylinder for 72K has Toyota lost their minds?
That’s par for the course with new cars today. The Chevy Silverado’s base engine is now a turbo-I4. Welcome to 2024 emission standards!
A SUV that can store 150lbs in the trunk...
Agree! Lexus is loosing it's soul.
(It looks much better now though) LOL
lol these “details” you highlight here are what you get in a top of the line Subaru ascent touring- $50k. The land cruiser is over priced by $15k
2 of my medium size dogs are 150 🤯
GX “extra” screen size is wasted by the climate control “buttons” Also you definitely want the 18’s. 20’s 😞
I know! Yeah exactly at your dogs. But it makes sense when you think about that there’s basically the bottom half of a MacBook sit tin under the cargo floor and would you want to stack a bunch of stuff on top of a MacBook? Probably not.
@@joshjamescars ugh
I guess I’ll just stick with my V8 Toyota for now then
No MacBook like parts, but it runs on e85 and has over 1,200lb cargo capacity
Wait!? That’s John? Doesn’t look like the guy in the old photo with a mustang 😂. And if your cut your fingernails realllyyyy short, the Lexus plastic won’t sound as scratchy. (Again 😂). Now back to the video…
Hahaha! 10 years and many pounds later on both of us LOL! And HA right!?
Can you do the video about 2025 Genesis GV80, please?
Toyota's supposed to be cheaper than lexus now there's no difference anymore I'd rather get a lexus than a toyota..
Well… the GX goes up to $86K fully optioned so versus $70K for the Land Cruiser fully optioned there is still a price premium there.
Good looking truck but… wayyy overpriced!!!
Agreed. I also think Toyota also knows that they have the only remaining midsize, body on frame SUVs and are really capitalizing on that.
what's up with volume knob location? :)
I don’t know! It seems we’re the only market that gets that, though.
The exterior of that Land Cruiser is shockingly ugly. And yet he’s wondering why nobody’s buying them? 😅
You’re in the minority there. Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of it (I think it’s trendy) but so many people love it!
CHEAPER? LOL
Relative to the GX pricing yes this is cheaper.
