4Runner vs. GX460: An actual owner's take on which to buy and WHY!
Where do you live? Here in NJ , $$39k was the starting point for this vehicle. I ended up paying 43k for it. Tax credit I got was only up to $2500. Not the full $7500
I live in Texas and we bought in 2021. Keep in mind the full $7,500 tax credit required that you met certain tax liabilities and income restrictions to get the full credit in that calendar year.
@@joshjamescars during that year, many dealerships in NJ "claimed" that the Prime was very hard to come by and therefore they had to sell at higher mark-ups. TBH, 43k was a great deal . One dealership even told be they were not going under 45k no matter what (and that was just the starting point). I don't regret my purchase at all.
@kreator-ys1yz Yikes. Sorry about that. I’m glad you don’t regret your purchase but boy did the dealer clean up at the expense of its customers.
Great video , I think lexus wanted to make a quick buck with this GX550. But this is the opportunity for other car makers to get the lexus market if they know how to do it!
Thank you, and I agree 100%!! I was just driving a new Infiniti QX60 and if I was in the market for that, guess who would NOT be getting my money (Lexus).
Plastic toys.... Excellent 👍 review, thank you for the honest report.... Toyota is making a big mistake
Sounds like the GX550 is ready for a refresh..... So many positive reviews, but you pointed out so many valid issues, that it's really a miss for Lexus.
I think they just need to figure out what it is. IMO the GX is just a V6 Land Cruiser which should carry the Toyota badge and be sold at the Toyota dealership.
Great review! I think that Lexus advisers ran the numbers, and found out they will sell more cars by losing "a few" luxury buyers, but gain that, and more, semi-luxury/rugged buyers. I truly believe that tastes of consumers are changing, and what was considered luxury 10 years ago, is not now. Just like tastes changed when the luxury sedan went bye bye.
Thank you! I think you’re spot on with Lexus running the numbers and being willing to lose luxury buyers. But also, Lexus as a whole is in a transitional phase because they and Genesis have both stated that they want to be full BEV makers by 2030 in North America and Europe and by 2035 globally. So I also think that Lexus is half adding their last round of ICE vehicles because all their time and money is being spent on the 2030 portfolio of EVs.
This is so disappointing but I really appreciate the honesty. Great review
Thank you!
I just sold my 4Runner and ordered an Overtrail+. I think it will be a great upgrade. Is it perfect? Definitely not. But it will provide very similar off road capability with an upgraded interior and a more modern body. If I wanted pure luxury, I’d look at other models or another brand.
Yes! This is exactly what I meant in the video in terms of who I think this GX is for, and I think you’ll love it. That said, if you haven’t yet, it’s worth looking up the issues the V35A engine has had just so you’re aware before you purchase.
Your voice 🥳
SR5 4wd is a deadly low budget contender to the gx as well
I really liked your video in general because it was an in-depth video about every single detail about the new GX 550. Keep up the good work ❤
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Good video. This has to be the biggest disappointment in Lexus' history. Lexus is in trouble IMO.
The next few years will be really interesting to watch. But Lexus is also in a weird spot because they’ve also said they want to be a full BEV automaker by 2030 so I don’t really know what their goal and identity is right now.
@@joshjamescars Good point. Sad IMO. You're right, the next few years will be very interesting.
I use to have a 1994 Lexus ES300, and to be honest, even that interior felt more premium than what i'm seeing in the GX550. I had actual leather, and wood.
That was one of the best generations of ES!
If hyundai motor is comprised of right minds; they will step up their game even harder right now. They need to close that gap from peoples perception that genesis is behind lexus. Now is the perfect time
I think Hyundai, Acura, and Infiniti all have a huge opportunity right now to lure Lexus’ buyers away from them.
BEST CAR REVIEW EVER MADE )) Hey Lexus watch that and go back to school !!!
Thank you so much! And yes, seriously!
YOU ARE GOOD THANKS
I thought it was just me who thought Lexus interiors were starting to look cheap even compared to let’s say a Genesis GV70
Oh no, so many of us feel that way. The NX, RX and TX are such a letdown.
The sound system on the old lexus gx and lx was far superior. Its said that the 21 speaker ml sound system on lexus lx was in the top 5 best sound systems ever fitted in a car from factory.
I’ve heard that and I have yet to hear the new ML system but I haven’t been blown away by the ML in the RX and TX.
I'm a current GX460 owner and I want to go BACK (as in back in time) to an LS430. Call me old fashioned but I'll take a sedan over an SUV.
Sedans are great! I really wish they hadn’t ever killed off the GS. That was always my favorite Lexus sedan. A bit sportier than the LS but still a proper luxury sedan.
I, too, am disappointed with what's happening with Lexus. I've been a Lexus owner for 30 years (ES, LS, GX, multiple GSs) and am now a TX350 owner (wife's kid hauler). The quality of the TX is very Toyota-ish, not what I experienced from my previous Lexus vehicles. The Mark Levinson audio in the TX is total garbage, and the fit and finish are subpar. I was considering the GX as a replacement for my 2017 GS350 FSport, but I am now having second thoughts and, for the first time in years, considering other brands like Acura. The Mazda CX-90 is incredibly well done.
I had the same thoughts and feelings about the TX (and the new RXs I’ve driven) both in materials and the ML too. The ML “pure play” system that they use in those cars is supposedly a lighter and or more eco-friendly hardware which I suspect has something to do with that. I’ve also heard the new GX’s ML isn’t as good as the ML in the 460 that I have. I also love, love, love the GS and regret not buying one before they discontinued it. I just had the Infiniti QX60 in for review and if you like old Lexus luxury, that’s one to look at. Video should be coming out here in the next few weeks.
Did anyone ever consider that Lexus maybe trying to keep costs down? Lexus is still way better than anything the big 3 from the U.S. is putting out any most other brands.
That’s exactly what they’re doing, and that’s the problem. It’s fine for a mainline brand like Toyota to cut corners to keep costs down, but not when the product is supposed to be a luxury vehicle. And while they keep their costs down, they’re jacking the price up for the consumer. A fully loaded Overtrail+ can be $90-$100K out the door.
Luxery to me is the "warm/cozy home" feeling around you. The 550 is just plain and pastic. Your videos always makes me feel good about my 23 GX Premium purchase. Absolutely fantastic auto TH-camr. Keep this up!
I love your “warm/cozy home” description because that’s exactly what that feeling is! And ENTIRELY plain and plastic. Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching!
I think you're right to highlight excess body roll in a "luxury" SUV but I've watched your segment on e-kdss a couple of times and I don't understand the point you're making. Without e-kdss the traditional sway bars are permanently "locked" which provides on-road stability and limits off-road articulation. Having e-kdss provides both on-road stability and off-road articulation, ideal for the overtrail trim which is intend to be taken off road but probably not necessary for most people in the other trims.
Hello! There were two points there. First, I think to your point, all GXs should have KDSS just like the last one did. However, Lexus seems to suggest it’s a cost/supply issue that only certain models can have it. I call BS on that, however, if it’s true and if they can only put KDSS on certain trims, I would personally prioritize giving it to Luxury grades and making it optional on Overtrail because for anyone who wants to modify the suspension, KDSS is complex and costly to remove. A lot of 4Runner owners (myself included) bought the TRD Pro because it didn’t have KDSS and thus made modification way easier.
Right on Josh! Good arithmetic that all RAV4 hybrid owners need to see
Thank you!
Although not interested in buying the new GX550, I have watched the intro of it and the Land Cruiser 250 since I have a 2018 Land Cruiser 200 and a 2021 GX460. I think your analysis of the changes is spot on. The 200 and the GX have a richness of both visual and tactile quality that seems to be missing from the new models. I am not a fan of black interiors (my 200 has the Terra and the GX is the Sepia) and I wonder if your impressions will change any with a different color scheme. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! I definitely think a light interior is needed here. And for that reason, I actually think the Land Cruiser 250 with the brown interior looks more upscale, like your Terra interior. But in the Lexus I think it also needs some kind of woodgrain or brushed aluminum trim or carbon fiber-anything to make it feel more bespoke Like if they just swapped the “black grained trim” for aluminum or something, and then paired that with a brown or red interior, it would be so much better. I also think a light headliner would do wonders for the models that don’t get the pano roof.
We gonna need you to test drive the new Land Cruiser. Want to know your thoughts.
Definitely trying to get my hands on one! I actually think that would be my pick after having driven this GX. This is way too expensive for what it is but the LC fully loaded at $69 is more reasonable.
Great and honest review Josh. As you know, I’m very happy I got my 2023 GX 460 when I did, just like you, no regrets. Love it!
I am not a Lexus fan anymore for what they have done to the gx460
I think Lexus can fix most of these issues. The Lexus RX has a great interior that is modern but still luxurious.
Really sad... gx needs to be more upscale and smooth
I have to agree.. I want to love the gx and buy but the interior is just not luxurious at all... as well, not good color options for interior and no power opening panoramic roof.. tire options terrible, with luxury you get AC controls in back but not with overtrail? Also luxury you must get 22 inch tires, ride suffers.. just don't get the limitations... they cheaped out on the interior.
Great review! I’m going for the NX350h but with Tesla lowering price and rate on Model Y LR, I can save $16k with the Tesla. Tough decision. Anyone comparing Lexus with Tesla?
Two totally different vehicles there. I think the big one is whether you can make the infrastructure work, whether you want a much bigger car (Model Y) and if you’re okay with a much bigger potential depreciation figure.
I think Lexus is targeting a different demographic with this new GX. And I say that because in my opinion as an off-road fan this new gx is an upgrade in almost all aspects. It's more modifiable, has a better, interior materials that are easy to clean, much better torque, way better towing capacity, more rugged looking design, better tech. All of this will make it the perfect replacement for my old land Rover discovery 😊
You’re spot on! That’s why, as mentioned in the video, I think it’s a great product it’s just a very different kind of product. Although as someone who’s always bought Japanese over Europe’s because of the value, I’m struggling to see the value here other than the reliability.
I completely agree with you on the quality and luxury feeling observations but if I want a new luxury SUV what is the other option that is not a German make?
Lexus LX600 and the 2025 Infiniti QX80 are body on frame that are super luxe and QX60 and Acura MDX (especially the type S) are good luxury unibody options in the same size class.
@@joshjamescars I do have the Acura MDX but questioning the Infiniti reliability. I really appreciate your video and the k you for your quick response. Can I reach out to you with other questions? Thanks
@gilruiz8864 sure thing! Also, both Infinitis uses tried and true V6s that are as solid as Toyota’s old V6s. Statistically, you’d be just as likely to have issues with a QX60 as in your MDX (and far more likely to have issues with the V35A twin turbo V6 in the GX based on the number of engine failures new Toyota trucks have had).
@@joshjamescars Thank you! Keep up the good work and I will subscribe to your channel and let me know where else I can follow you. Take care.
So, I am on a waitlist for the Premium+, and I totally get your position on this vehicle. However, this GX line is in direct competition with the Land Rover Defender. The rough and tough SUV line that is more Sport Utility than Lux, but has a subtle mix of both. So the buttery soft seats, real wood accents, no noise interior, floating on a cloud drivability is obviously gone. 😢😢 It's shocking but, I get it. Maybe the Luxury level will add these things back in 2025.
That’s right, but the Defender being under the Land Rover brand means it’s also in the same “premium” class versus luxury. It’s luxury-priced but that’s about it. I still think the GX is a good vehicle but definitely drive the Premium+ if you can. It’s not the trim I would buy anymore (even though my 2033 GX is a Premium Plus too).
@@joshjamescars will definitely go with premium +. Thank you. And great video ☺️!
Spot on!!! I have owned Toyotas for over 11 years and I feel like we are losing the holistic value and pride that Toyota once represented as a buyer. I have a 4R Pro and a GX460. We will most likely just keep them and afterwards hesitantly move to another brand.
Yep!! 100% same feeling here. I will say I just had a QX60 in for review that blew me away and I would happily buy that over a RX, GX, or TX.
Just did my first test drive of the GX550 premium trim. I have a deposit on an OT+ due in this summer. I currently drive an x7 and was not expecting it to compare since they are totally different vehicles. I have owned FJ cruiser,100 and 200 series Land Cruisers. I liked it better than the FJ and felt more more connected to the road than a 200 series. The interior is okay but not luxurious. It was what I expected and went into it with more timid expectations
I think for your use, you’ll love it. And I hope the OT+ rides better with the eKDSS system in place. That was my biggest issue with the one I drove (beyond the interior). Also, I’m guessing reliability isn’t a huge issue for you, but definitely do some googling about the V35A engine and its issues so you know what to look out for in your ownership of the GX.
Im glad I got a 2022 GX460 Luxury with 8k miles.. without even knowing how disappointing the new GX550 was going to be. I understand that when it comes to preference its a matter of opinion, but when you have the facts lined up in front of you its impossible not to make an informed decision unless you are biased or paid to promote something that clearly is not up to par with Lexus traditional quality. I like your reviews, not only in this instance, but previous ones as well. Thanks for keeping us alert and informed
100% agree, the price is out of line for the finishes on the Tacoma. The limited’s my pick too and for that price I’m looking at other vehicles.
Could not agree more! And same at looking at other vehicles at the price of a Limited.
I’m so glad I went with one of the last 460s instead of waiting on a 550.
Same here!
Thank you for yet another stellar video -- lots of detailed historical context, technical details, comparisons, reasoning, and pragmatic thoughts and concerns! You have put more critical thinking and analysis into this review than many of the <ahem> 'pom-pom' videos purporting to be reviews. Do my eyes deceive me at 6:49 -- is the dual-sliding front center console armrest also gone too? Overall, I would say that Lexus has gone *_backwards_* for most who will use this vehicle. Every Lexus dealer should make sure to hide any remaining 460's on their lots so buyers don't have a good basis of comparison .... To me, the luxury is definitely gone (along with, potentially, the reliability), only to be replaced by more 'impressive' -blah -_-blah-_- -*_-blah-_* specs and *_much_* higher prices. 😧
Thank you so much for the kind words, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I completely agree on all counts, and YES! You saw right, the center console is just a solid plastic block now! And I don’t even think it’s NuLuxe finished, it feels like an injection molded soft plastic in this Premium+ trim. And that’s not all-there are a number of features missing from the last one in here. The Overtrail trims are only 5-seaters and don’t have 3-zone climate, and the top Luxury trim gets a moonroof that doesn’t open.
Josh, you provide the absolute best critiques and thoughtful Lexus observations I have ever come across. I had a 2019 4Runner and now have a 2023 GX. I’m so glad I got the ‘23, thanks in part to your insightful commentaries which bring to light subtle product nuances that are apparent after extended use but not always on first blush.
Hey, Stephen! Thank you for always watching and for the kind words! I do remember you getting the GX, and I’m so glad I was able to play a part in your new GX and glad you got one while you could!
Im still driving my 06 gx470 and gonna continue doing so until the wheels fall off.
So shall we check back in 2056 and see how it’s doing then? 😂 I will be doing the same with my 460!
This is the first time I have heard of this feedback. The new GX definitely feels tailored to a younger crowd. The SUV market is crowded at the moment. It feels like Lexus is pushing GX460 owners to the LX instead.
It really does, although I don’t know how many “young” people can afford, or want to spend on an $80-$90K SUV. I certainly am not buying this at this point. 😂
@joshjamescars In your opinion, what is the best value SUV/truck across the current Toyota and Lexus lineup for new and/or used?
Hello! I think it depends on what you need/value. Given the astronomical prices on the new TNGA-F SUVs, I’d say a 2024 4Runner Limited is a great value at around $50K (which is the same price as a mid-trim Tacoma now). I also would definitely buy a CPO 2022-3 GX460 which you can find for between $45 and $55K. And if we’re not talking body on frame, both the Rav Prime and Rav hybrid are the best values for an everyday driving appliance. The current NX350h (based on Rav hybrid) is also a great choice but the interior isn’t super luxurious anymore, so I’d say it’s not a great value when a Rav Hybrid with the same features can be had for around $10K less. I would also consider a 2022 RX350 or 450h to get the last truly luxurious RX with the V6. But I would not buy any of the new Lexus SUVs.
@@joshjamescars thank you!
This 2GR V6 engine is in a Lotus Evora. Just supercharged. I wish we could get that in the camry. XSE or TRD.
Wouldn’t that be amazing!? And it sounds so good in the Evora too. Although, I think the Evora used the older port-injected 2GR-FE and not the FKS. In either case, such a great engine.
Liked and subscribed! Great perspective! Thank you!
Thank you and welcome aboard!
Maybe the Overtrail with the E-KDSS and the smaller rims would make for a better ride? I'm wondering. That is a great, thoughtful and thorough review. Thanks for that, Josh. Cheers.
Hello, and thank you! That would be my hope as well… Although after this went up, I watched The Topher’s drive of the Overtrail and he said he didn’t feel any difference with the eKDSS which is a little concerning. I guess only a test drive would fully confirm. Cheers to you!
Toyota needs to make the *Century* a global car, instead of keeping it in Japan. The Century is the new Lexus, and Lexus has ceased to be innovative (original LS). Lexus (Toyota) are now content with dressing up basic Toyota's and pretending they're something they're not, or worse, collaborating with companies that have appalling reliability records!
I agree. Lexus has also said that it intends to be a full BEV automaker by 2030 so there is actually a need for Toyota to start making luxury vehicles of their own if they want to continue to compete in the luxury space… though maybe they don’t anymore since this is what we’re getting from what is supposed to be the luxury division.
@@joshjamescars I live in the UK, where Lexus seems to have died a death. They never really took off in any meaningful way, unlike the U.S. market, back in the 90's. Now we get a selection of very basic 4-pot models, or even worse, hybrid only options. ES, LM 4-pot only, LS hybrid only, no LX or GX models. We have to make do with Rangey's! Hands up, I'm not impressed by Lexus design lately. LS, LC, RCF ... they not lookers! The only Lexus I currently have any enthusiasm for is the IS500 ... which is a limited run, and not available in the UK anyway. Lexus ... are literally forcing me into the Merc, BMW or Audi dealership .... and we all know, buying German can only end with many expensive, tear soaked bills! But where else can one go?
I have a 23 Gx and agree with you 100%
I don't see any of these new Lexus vehicles as luxury cars any longer. There is nothing luxurious inside of them
They really aren’t! I’ve been disappointed in the NX, RX and TX too.
