"finally somebody understood that I can do these things" this line speaks not just for her but for all the Evelyn Wang variants in the vast multiverse. it's so poetic to hear her say that.
That’s so true. The movie is not just about the potential of one human being, but also the potential of human kindness. That’s what the Daniels gave Michelle Yeoh.
I cried with her as she was saying it. She blew that role out of the water.
I just started watching the movie for the second time last night (obsessed with it and just went I hadn't bought the Blu-ray ;)) , I got an enormous grin when I realized that her very first verse jump is pretty much into her own real life self, the beloved movie star who can do amazing kung fu.
Jackie has also gone through the same things. Despite being a blockbuster, he's struggled despite several attempts to become a 'respected' or 'serious' actor (which I think he managed perfectly in at least a couple of his films).
It goes to show how important it was for him when the Oscars gave him an honorary lifetime achievement award. I can only hope that Michelle Yoeh and Everything Everywhere All At Once get every Oscar that night. I can't think of a better film in decades, it certainly is, and will remain so, a certified modern classic.

You have to give credit to The Daniels because they both were such super fans of Michelle Yeoh’s movies and they felt absolutely confident in her abilities as an actor to where they felt confident enough to write the role of Evelyn without restrictions because they knew that Michelle can literally do everything!
Oddly enough, I actually compare EEAO to Deadpool, because both movies actually do an homage to their main actor's career within the film. Ryan finally got his big movie, and Michelle got her Oscar😊

i love jade fox and yu shu in that film. both performed brilliantly by intergenerational female cinematic martial artists

Crouching Tiger itself was inspired by King Hu's "Come Drink With Me", which is a monument in the wuxia genre itself.
Michelle Yeoh in tears describing how she finally felt seen, REALLY seen, in Everything Everywhere All At Once when she was cast as Evelyn not only aligns with one of the aspects of the film's main plot, but it also exemplifies a substantial reason she was the perfect choice for Evelyn.

That dirt bike jump onto the moving train was and maybe still is the most amazing stunt I've ever seen. It's tied for first with a few things Jackie did, but holy crap every time I see it I can't believe she survived.

I was so nervous watching that car hood scene even though I know she turned out alright. There's some primal fear seeing real cars and real buses and real pavement in stunts. I would have felt nothing if that was done in a green screen.

She won't get an Oscar for a while because she's not white. It took the Oscars an INCREDIBLY long time to recognize Black actors and actresses. The AAPI community is just now experiencing the spotlight but it will take a bit before they are recognized and awarded.

Even though Michelle Yeoh finally being recognised and winning an Oscar is a source of pride for many Malaysians, there have been a few people contesting just how much it benefits the country.
She's on the same level of Jackie Chan physically and has the acting prowess of Meryl Streep. SHE DESERVES THE OSCAR!

"To be funny, to be real, to be sad..." she was all these things to so many people for a very long time but I'm so happy she gets to showcase that all at once in this once in a lifetime masterpiece of a movie!
Closing the clip with that statement was perfect. I saw Everything Everywhere just the other day and was very impressed by the entire cast. She of course nailed it and carried the entire film but the performances of all those working with her are what put it over the top. In this one character she showcased everything and to see how much the role impacted her personally was very touching. The woman is truly a class act.
It’s frustrating that a legend hasn’t felt like she’s been able to be that deep of a character. Part of the issue with Hollywood not being able to write non straight white men. So she’s been waiting for a long time to get a role that white people would have been getting for decades. She worked so hard

My god, Michelle is such a treasure! I loved hearing her speak and tell her experiences, especially in Everything Everywhere All at Once. It got me misty eyed when she cried.
You hardly see anyone so passionate about acting and what they are delivering to the audience, the way Michelle Yeoh does. It’s real to her and you can feel it in her conversation. Such a lovely actress and one of my absolute favorites.
seeing her getting emotional talking about EEAAO had me getting teary too! anyone who watches that movie can feel something special about it and that's because it is a movie that is clearly so special to everyone who was involved with it.

That’s one of the best films in the past 10 years and her acting isn’t only incredible it is remarkable, how someone wearing hotdog fingers can make you laugh and cry while she can make you cheer her on as a failing mother in the next moment is something to marvel at.

Michelle Yeoh can disappear into any character she plays. I would recognize her face anywhere, but a few minutes of her talking and I immediately believe in her character.
I know! Finally someone who shares the same opinion as mine! I always say that Michelle is that kind of actor who doesn’t need physically altering make-up or a very particular voice/accent, nor undergo significant body transformation to help her execute the characters that she’s playing. She can still be her but you believe her.

@@joewas2225 IU is very good for an idol actor, and an actor generally, but she doesn't have the same 'legendary status' that Michelle Yeoh or Daniel Day Lewis have due to decades of experience and starring in excellent, award-winning films. Maybe she will in 20-30 years. (Also, just my opinion; IU is held back by her 'idol persona' because she is forced into a position where she *always* has to look pretty. Which she is. But it means that her ability to emote sadness and anger is held back by a need to still seem poised and beautiful, and it means that her characters all show emotion the same way. Her range is limited by her company's demand that she upholds her 'little sister' image.)
the way she gets emotional at the end just proves how much she cares about her craft and wants to show us how amazing she is, like we know she's awesome we've seen it, but sometimes we need that for ourselves more than anything.
Star Trek Discovery was the first time I saw her in a non-fighting role. She fought, but as Captain, she was on the level with Picard, Kirk, etc. so it really showed her in a different light. I guess they're only doing movies. She was amazing in that.
I'm an 88' kid. Growing up in the 90s while Hollywood started having a transition to more women in action I remember Michelle Yeoh one of my favorite actors. She could do anything! She brought so much inspiration to me as a woman in a male dominated genre, an outspoken and bold woman with her lines, and her fun doing the roles. I'm so glad she is on more big screen movies these days. More of Michelle!
I remember when my family had a Korean video store, my parents added Chinese films because people were asking for them. I would see this woman in so many cool funny martial art films but was never able to share with my friends what I saw. When I saw poster in my town for Crouching and saw her face, I actually was so excited I cried. In that tiny tiny town in Missouri I grew up in, people actually started recognizing her! I’m Korean American but Michelle is like family to me.
I Love your story. This is true assimilation and I appreciate that you had that moment of growth as a milestone. We sometimes don't get the chance to recognize and acknowledge those people in our lives who have made an impact. I couldn't describe "Crouching Tiger" better than her. If you understand just a part of their culture, you know how much tension there is in that movie. Michelle knows so much about acting and cinema that I could listen to her for hours. I can't wait to see her in The Witcher. Such a legend.

And now I start to think she's the Asian equivalent of Meryl Streep, not just about the vibe but also the versatility and the ability to anchor a production.
Well she's Malaysian. And they were part of the British empire up until just a few years before she was born. English is still a mandatory subject in school

I don’t recall Meryl Streep pulling off crazy stunts to the same level as Jackie Chan, so probably not the “Asian” equivalent to Meryl Streep. They’re very different performers.
She is a native English speaker though. She grew up speaking English and Malay in a mostly English-speaking family. Just because she has a Malaysian accent doesn't mean her Malaysian English is less "native."
I can't believe they didn't cover her character on Star Trek: Discovery, her performance as emperor Phillipa was one of the most lasting impressions I have of any character in that series.

How could you have left out her role in Memoirs of a Geisha?!! - It was SO ICONIC! -- That said, it is anyway amazing to see her speak about any of her roles. She's just so incredibly talented and her voice is pure delight!

Well, it's a Japanese film and not a very accurate one. I believe the actual author of "Memoirs of a Geisha" felt the directors and screenwriters took way too many artistic liberties. She did a beautiful job, but I don't think that movie had much to do with her legacy as other films she had done.
That was such a magnificent movie. Her playing Mameha was incredible!!

The portrayal is so emotional for a japanese set up, studying the culture... Japanese are very modest they'd rather lie in what they truly feel than show it blatantly let alone portraying a character as a Geisha. Mameha in the book exudes power in speech without giving-off too much emotions. Michelle as Mameha as for me talks more than showing it to the audience.

Wow, you can really see how much that film meant to her. Ever since I first saw Crouching Tiger, when I was young, I thought she was amazing. I thought she was strong, beautiful, and courageous.
Michelle Yeoh manages to hit a depth of character in so many of her projects, beyond what so many actors seem capable of doing. After seeing her in a couple films, I really started feeling like she anchored so many of the movies she was in, for the audience. And she is so good at making you deeply feel for her characters. I've felt fiercely on her characters' sides in some of her classics, and cried at their losses, like in CTHD❣
My god, how eloquent is this woman. A true treasure. And regarding her comment, "finally somebody understood that I can do all these things"--we've known for a long time but you even exceeded those expectations in this latest movie.

@xchocome9629 Absolutely. Well said. I've been following her for a while now and even though I've been more into Jet Li and Bruce Lee since I was young and first getting into various martial arts myself, but she surprised me with this role.
In Crazy Rich Asians she apeared not that many times like she said only twice with the son (male lead) but throughout the whole movie you feel her presence, that's how much she nailed her role in the movie and honestly she should've at least been nominated for an Oscar for that movie as well.
And how right she was. Everything Everywhere All at Once shows the real capabilities of Michelle Yeoh. She's not just the stunt action, the stoic mom, she can be everything all at once. This project has given us a lot to think about while being crazy entertaining. Just refreshing.

she most definitely deserved the academy award. she has been iconic for decades and EEAAO is genuinely one of the most amazing films i’ve ever seen. The direction and the acting performances had the ability to make me cry and laugh multiple times on every viewing (of which there were and will be many)
Love her so much! As an Asian person, I think she means a lot to me because the first thing I saw her in was Tomorrow Never Dies, and that was possibly the first time I'd ever seen a strong Asian character in a Western movie.
On top of that, she just seems like such a nice, down to earth, unpretentious person that just conducts herself with such poise and professionalism
Everything Everywhere All at Once quickly became one of my all time favorite movies, and she's a big part of why. Evelyn is such an amazing and compeling character, and I cannot imagine anybody else being able to do her justice. Michelle really deserves an Oscar, because that movie is the perfect acting reel.
Michelle Yeoh had to make me cry ONE LAST TIME with this video LOL I sobbed at the end of Everything, Everywhere All at Once and to see that role meant so much to her, I definitely felt it on the screen when watching that film. What a beautiful and passionate soul she is UGH

Ps. Michelle’s ring feels like a nod to the traditional jade bracelets that many Asian women have worn, but with a modern twist. I love everything about this woman and this film!!!
I first saw her in Memoir’s of a Geisha when I was little and the movie was on tv and I remember just falling in love with her soft yet strong voice and her performance. I thought she was so beautiful and elegant, and she still is to this day.

What Michelle doesn't say is that she had no idea how to ride a motorcycle during Supercop and there was no wires or netting and she still did the stunt. During Crouching Tiger she had a torn ACL for scenes with her fighting with all the Weapons She's a BEAST!!!

Having watched Everything Everywhere All at Once last night, I can confirm Michelle Yeoh absolutely nailed everything she set out to do. She really helped make what I think will be the best film of 2022.
She portrayed so many things in her performance, it was a real master-class in acting. EEAAO is my favorite movie of all time, she should be so proud!
The courage and strength of this woman. The way she carries herself, has always been so admirable. I was young when I first saw her and rediscovered her a few years ago. I thought she had more recognition back then until eeoao was coming around. She was why I was going to see it. I’m so glad to see her get it now. She’s also has a beautiful story that inspires me in my own life. all the love for her
