Here's my review of the Small Transport Crossbody by Madewell, plus a careful look at the slight design changes they've made over the last 5 years (2013-2018) in 5 different Transport crossbody bags!

Thanks for the thorough review. I have been really interested in both of these bags and plan to take a look at them in person this weekend. It's too bad the zip-top tote doesn't have an outer pocket... it's because of that that I am leaning toward the smaller one (IF the smaller one has a zippered interior pocket, for my wallet).
You should email this great design suggestion to the company itself! :)

Me too! My straps are detachable on my tote. You can twist those little screws. I also prefer the older style, the leather looks softer and not as stiff. I also don’t like the look of the recessed zipper.
How does the leather on the latest model wear?
Just wondering if your selling the cider or English leather totes I would love to have one

Hi! Just wondering your current thoughts on the small transport crossbody (first bag you showed). I have my eye on it and am so close to caving. I usually carry a small makeup bag, wallet (or cardholder), keys, and a few other small items. Do you think it could easily fit all of that? Also, do you ever feel like it not having a zip top is detrimental? Still on the fence but I absolutely love the bag!
Hearing you say that you carry a small make up bag makes me think that you might prefer the zip-top crossbody that's just a tad bigger than this! In the small transport crossbody, I can pretty much fit a small wallet, keys, cell phone, and a sunglasses case. Any more than that would risk falling out the top. Can you go into a store and try them out? Sometimes seeing in person is a good idea! But ultimately I would make your decision this way: Which one excites you most by the looks of it? If you really like the look of something, you will adapt to it. So get the one that most excites you! Perhaps it is the small transport crossbody after all!

Great question! Ultimately, it depends on (1) the particular piece of leather, which differs slightly with each bag, and then (2) how much use the bag has gotten. But, for the most part, I have seen that most Medium Transport Totes are substantially the same and most definitely keep their shape when set down. I have 3, and all 3 do! Have a great day, Andrea!

Love the video, thanks for all the info. Those straps on the older zip top crossbody are detachable, You have to screw those spiral parts and they release so they can be removed. One of mine was loose and I had to glue it or it would always be coming off. So yours might be glued, but give it a try. The newer black/brown, looks a bit more structured and stiff, do you find that to be true? Thank you for showing the mini, I think it might be too small for me though. Great video!!!!!
Oops! I forgot that you had mentioned that the old bag's hardware does unscrew. Whoops! Thanks for posting that here for others to see. Great comparison review! I just recently purchased the Transport Crossbody Bag from Nordstrom Rack and waiting for it to be delivered this week. I've never owned a Madewell bag so this will be my first. I like the simple design and lack of designer label. The newer bag version looks aesthetically nicer, however, I'm not keen on recessed zippers. I like to zip up a bag with one hand. Also, I think you lose some space since the recessed zipper and crossbody D-rings take up some of the space. They're both beautiful but I prefer the previous design from the latest one. I hope the bag I get works out. TFS. 😊

as soon as i saw you in my feed I clicked this video so fast! loved this video, i didn't know they made some pretty big design changes to the smaller crossbody! I think I prefer the update, it makes it have cleaner, more minimalist lines. I just got my mom a medium transport with her initials on it, i'm contemplating one of the smaller crossbodies for xmas for her because of how much she raves about her medium one. Do you find that the one without the zip top is secure when walking in busy places? How much does it fit? (would love to see a what's in my bag/what fits for that bag!). The zip top one seems like it holds a lot more, do you find that if you fill it to capacity that it gets too heavy for everyday wear? would love to see a video with more of your thoughts!

To answer your questions, the one with the zip-top definitely holds considerably more than the small, and no, I don't find that the zip-top gets heavy when I fill it to capacity. But then, I purposely try to never overload my bags! Haha. You're so sweet to keep requesting a what's-in-my-bag video! I am going to need to do it for you! I'm thinking I might do it on my next video, but the bag I use might surprise you! :)

Yes. I have a channel but I haven’t posted a video in a few weeks. My daughter carries their small backpack daily for almost a year. It still looks new. It’s a very high quality leather backpack and not heavy. I have one too in red but I’ve only carried it a few times. I’ve thought about getting a small transport. Price for the small transport seems a bit high to me so I need to keep checking my emails for when they have a sale. I think I like the straps attached on the inside best.

Thanks for the comparison/review! Which version (old or new) of the bag has a larger interior area? I have a tablet that’s 7.5x10” and I’m trying to figure out if it would fit inside easily. 😊
You're talking about the zip-top transport crossbody, right? I just checked the Madewell website for you, and it looks like its longest dimension is 10 and 1/4 inch wide. Sadly, I would guess that your tablet wouldn't fit, since the zipper at the top is secured on either end which means it's probably less than you need it to be.

Lisa Goddard Oh that’s so funny! I thought your name was familiar when it came across but I see a lot of names at work so I figured it was just a familiar name! It is not important to me at all, I was just thinking there might be an obvious difference. I am tall so the crossbody straps have always seemed on the shorter side to me, and then I had a baby and I think I may be permanently wider so I was thinking if there was extra length on the new ones I might consider buying one. Goodness knows I don’t need one though!

Thanks for a great comparison video! I love your videos and became a Madewell addict from watching them. As my style has evolved to become more minimal, the clean lines of all Madewell's handbags really appeal to me. I have two of the Medium Transport Totes and love the style. Which crossbody do you find yourself using the most? I've seen the small transport crossbody and the zip crossbody. The only complaint I have with Madewell's bags is that the straps are sometimes too short! I'm 5'11" so I need something long!! :)
I went to the Madewell store near me and have decided on the zip crossbody for my next purchase. Now the only hard part is deciding on a color. I love the navy color that is out for the season and the classic black. :)

Right now I'm on a steady rotation between 4: the original Transport Tote, the Medium Transport Tote, the Zip-Top Crossbody, and the Small Transport Tote. I love them all! But I think your decision of the Zip-Top Crossbody is perfect because the size is the perfect balance of roomy enough but still small. My favorite is always the English Saddle, and I love the mix of brown and black, too! Let me know what you decide on!

@@amberdean374 If you're good at keeping your handbag sitting up whenever you're on the go, then the Medium Transport Tote is probably perfect and roomy enough for plenty! I like how it can be either worn as a shoulder bag or worn as a crossbody. If you tend to toss your bag when you're putting it down, then maybe consider the one with the zipper! Keep in mind that a zippered bag has zipper teeth which means your hands will feel this each time you reach into the bag. The zippered bag is also lined with fabric inside, so you won't see, feel, or smell that leather from the inside when you're rummaging through your bag. Honestly, both are great and I enjoy mine each for their own unique reasons! Do let me know which one you decide on!

i am pretty sure the difference between returning a bag in 2017 and keeping a bag in 2019 is due to the hardware rings moving to inside the bag.
