Though if it's going to be a "first fumble", an anime critic will have to adjust his expectations with future releases, lest he becomes like his extremely miserable counterpart, the cartoon critic. I came into Daima with shockingly low expectations but I'm having a blast casually watching each episode every friday having just jumped ship from a sinking hellsite known as twitter. Man, as long as I have been watching Dragon Ball (late 90s), I have known the animation would suck on episodes preceding absolute bangers. Next week will be FIRE.
Crazy how the weakest looking episode still beats the majority of episodes from any other dragon ball series to date. Shows how polished this production was as it’s still a good looking episode. The better looking episodes of DB, DBZ, and DBS might have surpassed this but the better looking episodes of Daima are movie level quality and the other series struggle to meet that level regularly. Episode 1 is still genuinely one of the best looking dragon ball episodes of all time even with some of the stuff that came out of Super, Z, and OG DB
The fact that a low priority episode right before the first big fight can look this good is unreal. Super meanwhile had bad looking episodes even in moments that should have been important like Merged Zamasu's debut. But even for Dragonball anime standards, we still have yet to see a truly bad episode look-wise.
I enjoyed the episode but i respect your discourse, opinions about the production in this episode being sub-par when you have praised the other Daima episodes.
The breakdown might've been negative for the most part, but the music selection fucking slaps. That's one of my favourite Rurouni Kenshin tracks right there.
I remember you used to praise Yashima's storyboards a lot more during the ToP arc, do you think they aren't as good now? Were they being corrected by Nagamine or Nakamura back then?
I'm glad the production was in a relatively healthy place for the run of this show, but when you're trying to live up to Toriyama's paneling, idk how you can get away with some of these boards. Feels like there's so much empty space in a lot of shots with nothing really framed.
I’ve been enjoying daima a lot over the last few weeks, but since you started pointing out the concerns and worries with the storyboards, I have been keeping an eye out haha it was a little worse, but I don’t mind as much

If an episode is going to be relatively dialogue driven, I can forgive it being a little below par especially when it was set pretty high. Like if next episode is as good as the preview suggests throughout and hits a 10 like episode one, this is around a 6. Nothing horrendous, nobody's so oversimplified or off model it looks like they let Uchiyama or Ebisawa out of the basement, and I bet the blu ray can fix that continuity error with a simple camera flip.
