- Hellurr!! I read the first page to decide which thriller and romance books to unhaul. Do you agree with my choices or should I reconsider some books?

I have this toxic trait that makes me feel like a failure if I don't finish every book I bought for whatever reason, so unhauling books AND doing it after technically DNFing them both feel like superpowers to me.
Tbh it's not toxic, you're just more resilient LOL! I'm sure I've missed out on some good books bc I didn't have the patience.

This video is actually generous in comparison to what a lot of readers do. I'm an English - Writing major who aspires to be a published author (self or not) and I had it drilled into my head that you HAVE to have a good first line. So many people will pick up your book, glance at the first line, then shelf it if they aren't instantly hooked. If you get past that hurdle, then you have to keep up the momentum for the first chapter. It's one reason I struggle so much with first lines in my stories. Usually I wind up skipping them so I can get something on paper and hope a good one comes to me later.
Wow that's the first time I've been called generous, so thanks for that LOL. I think it depends on your ideal audience. Are they Verity/Freida lovers who need to be entertained immediately (hence Verity starting with the guys head popping off despite it being irrelevant overall) or they pretentious wankers like me who are looking for specific writing style in addition to an interesting hook. You can't write for everyone, unfortunately. Also I realize this is super preachy and stuff you already know given this is your major so let me dismount my high horse LMAOO

I have to stick up for “The Kind Worth Killing” - the male PI is a dufus but you are saved by a really cool female character that immediately starts to run the show. I’m not saying this book is a full 4 star but it was fun and I would recommend it to people who want just something entertaining to read. The second book was also pretty good. I read the third but I’m not going to defend it.

So now, if I'm in a brick and mortar bookstore, I will open each potential purchase to a very specific page -- a number of significance only to me, but greater than 1 -- and judge the heck out of the dialogue, sentence structure, character names, and overuse of present tense.

Two: I really couldn’t stand Yours Truly bc the miscommunication trope was like beating a dead horse I wanted to throw the book across the room, yet somehow managed to finish it. THAT BEING SAID. I read Part of Your World first and I LOVED it. I highly recommend giving it a chance lol and that is from a girlie who hates yours truly just as much. Honestly can’t believe it gets more hype than part of your world. I just don’t see it. End rant. ❤❤❤❤

The New One sounds a lot like an old movie called AI. It’s a futuristic retelling/imagining of Pinocchio where this couple ends up with an AI version of their son. Tbh I don’t really know what happens since I haven’t actually seen the movie and only heard a boy it from a video essay about Pinocchio lol
