I started reading Robin Hobb because of you 3 years ago. It changed my life. Ive read them very slowly because I knew from pretty early on that this series is something else. I am on the final book, havent yet started because I know I am going to grieve the ending of this series for a long time…. But thank you. Thank you for recommending Robin Hobb. Its one reason that makes life worth living for me. Thank you thank you thank you.
The thing about Ruby Red is that it was written in German... The translation just doesn't do it justice, it takes away from the story. So, I understand why you didn't like it. But if you ask any 25-year-old, this was THE YA series to read in Germany when we were in middle school! It's so popular that they made all three books into movies!
As a new convert to fantasy, I appreciate this video so much for all the information. Even more though I have to say I am so impressed at your recall of 100 series!!! And being able to rank them!!!
Your videos have truly gotten my back into fantasy in a big way!! I would love if you'd make a video about your favorite heist fantasies, one of the best tropes!
Yeah! This is the video I have been looking for. I have just read my very first Fantasy, "Fate Inked in Blood" and was so surprised how much I loved the genre. Your talking about completed series will help me decide which rabbit hole to venture down. Thanks so much! Elizabeth
I read the Lumatere Chronicles/Finnikin of the Rock series AGES ago because of your recommendation and I loved it!! The second book is my favorite because of the journey Froi goes on. I really think it's quite mature and has more substance than a lot of the YA fantasy I've read (and I've read a lot haha). More people need to be reading and talking about that series!
Out of all the booktubers I've watched, your taste in books align with mine the most. So I trust your judgement. Seeing you immediately rank PJO so high has cemented that even more. You now have my complete trust in books lol
This is exactly why I follow you. I trust your reviews of books. I thought I was going crazy when I would ready "popular" books and then couldn't even finish them because they were so bland and predictable. You were the reason I first started reading RJB and now I'm obsessed. I can safely read whatever you recommend and know I'm about to get into some seriously amazing writing. FYI, Katherine Arden's new standalone just came out and it's *chef's kiss*
Wheel of time was meant to be read in the early 2000s when we had very little else. You can't read it now, it doesn't work. Unless you read along with the Everybody Hates Rand podcast, then it's still fun.
Read Wheel of Time between 2022 and 2024 and had a huge blast, finished the 3000 last pages in 2 weeks. It freakin' works. But I acknowledge it's one of the most divisive fantasy series ever, even amongst fans!
As someone who is reading TOG series for the 1st time rn... i can confirm, im in the middle of the series & its kind of hard for me to get back to it every night where as the first couple books i was reading so fast. But im still intrigued enough to not DNF it
I watched this video this morning and I immediately saved some of your all time faves on my tbr. and then this afternoon I stumbled into my local bookstore when I was on my afternoon walk and ended up buying 'city of brass', which is one of the books that peaked my interest. they have a very limited English collection so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it on the shelf. So it felt like fate so I had to get it haha
I understand where you are coming from in the things you liked and didn’t like but a sorcery of thorns and these violent delights where one of my absolute favorite books ever and five star for me! People have different tastes so it’s ok that you didn’t like them.
Currently rereading the Percy Jackson series and I just finished the Battle of the Labrynth.... I remembered that one being my favorite and it's STILL SOOOO GOOD. Loving it all over again
"Finnikin of the Rock" by Melina Marchetta truely an amazing series to check out...❤❤ Such heartfelt characters, amazing storyline!❤ A Very underrated series..
I'm probably the only person who liked the Frugal Wizard's Handbook. I relate to the feelings of failure of the main character experiences, and I feel like he's very relatable. Maybe it's telling that the people who don't like the book have their lives together. And people like me who don't have direction are the ones who like it. I thought the illustrations and bits of Handbook were hilarious. I love anything to do with parallel universes. And the end of the book and the characters' fates gives me hope for myself that maybe I can figure out what I'm meant for too someday. And maybe I'm good enough the way I am and I don't need to seek perfection. And at the end of the day, I can compare myself to a fictional character who really messes things up with his life and say, "Well at least the decisions I made are better than that!" haha
You’re probably already on your Japan trip. Hope you’re having a wonderful time! I would add to your list The Nsibidi Scripts series (Akata Witch, Warrior and Woman) by Nnedi Okorafor. I’d rank them all as GREAT! Tor has released two of her earlier books, Shadow Speaker and Like Thunder. I enjoyed the first and just getting into the second. You can definitely tell they’re earlier works, but it’s nice to see how her imagination has always worked.
Well, you've just added some new fantasy books/authors to my TBR. You don't mention them here, but if you've never read any of the books by Tamora Pierce, I can HIGHLY recommend them. I started reading them in 5th grade (almost 24 years ago, yeesh...) and I still re-read them every year. I firmly believe they hold up to this day. My favorite of her series is the two quartets and the standalones in the Circle of Magic series, but I love everything she writes.
No Ian Irvine? You’re missing out, his second series (The Well of Echoes Quartet) in the Three Worlds Cycle is especially brilliant… lots to add to my TBR! 😊
Any specific recommendations for lovers of A River Enchanted? I absolutely loved those two books, especially the island and all of its Nordic-esque magic. But I don’t know where to go from there for other similar fantasy reads.
To be fair, I have yet to read it, so I can't attest to how good it is (though I have been hearing good things from friends), but I kno0w A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen is Nordic inspired as well. Might give it a try? I adore her Stolen Songbird series about a girl kidnapped into a world under a mountain full of trolls. I really enjoyed her writing in that YA series, O perhaps this new book of hers will be good as well. :)
No, no, no, no about For the Wolf!!! This book just drove me to want more, more more fantasy. :-) If you find it bad, I guess I am in for some real treats , as I have a ton of the ones you rate, but haven't read yet. ;-) .
I would love to know what other heist stories you recommend!!! That’s one of the reasons I absolutely loved six of crows when it first came out because I was like a HEIST?!? I hadn’t read one in a fantasy book before!
I always feel a pinch when people say Ruby Red is bad, because as a german teen I loved it when I read it for the first time and it was one of my absolute favorite books, hahaha. Of course it's not perfect, but I just love almost everything that author puts out, just a comfort author for me.
Can never recommend The Girl of Fire and Thorns enough! especially if you are looking for a female main character that has to work hard to complete her quest, isn't stereotypically "pretty", and has genuine friendships with those around her!
The Bone Season is Samantha Shannon's superior series by far, but then that's not completed so wouldn't show up in this video I guess. But still, I needed to mention it because first rule of books is talk about your favorite books
This video was so good, it was this kind of recommendation I needed. Have you read "I'm number four"? I loved this collection and I don't know many people who read it.
I loooooved ruby read and i read it when I was almost 20. My sister in law also loved it and she read it at 21. So if it sounds good to you. Give it a try.
Hearing your thoughts on the wheel of time and knowing what you like about Robin Hobb’s work I couldn’t help but think you’d love a song of ice and fire (don’t know if your already said you won’t read it, so sorry if you have). It’s got great pacing, a truly absorbing world, is very well written and the characters are some of the best in fiction. I think you would enjoy. Could not be more unlike wheel of time if it tried I think 😂
soft DNFed around book 6 of wheel of time. it's something i'll likely finish but some series once i pause them it's gonna be a while before i come back
If you like Six of Crows, definitely check out Lies of Locke Lamora (the Gentleman Bastards series) by Scott Lynch! I am nearing the finish on it and its sooo good. I feel like there are a lot of things that were taken nearly directly from it in Six of Crows, but thankfully Bardugo does, over the Six of Crows duology, become her own work with less direct inspiration from Gentleman Bastards. I love both, but I think Scott Lynch's work is superior. Just be prepared for the feels. Much like Robin Hobb's books rip your heart out, Scott Lynch is often cited similarly when people talk about this series.

The Magician’s Nephew is my favorite too! 💚💛
"Finnikin of the Rock" by Melina Marchetta truely an amazing series to check out...❤❤
