Kind of annoyed at the "no self-published" books person.
Self-published (indie) =/= "got rejected by publishers."
Most indie authors go the self-publishing route right off of the bat because they don't WANT to pursue a traditional publishing house. I have read absolute garbage that was traditionally published and some truly amazing works from indie authors.

As someone in the fanfic community, there are indeed some authors that are very anti-fanfic, like Anne Rice, though, the real tea is with Diana Gabaldon (author of Outlander). She is very much against it (going so far as to call it immoral and illegal (which it isn’t as long as you don’t profit monetarily from it)) and said she never considered using “someone else’s character”, and yet, she has herself said Jamie Fraser is based on the companion of the 2nd Dr Who, Jamie McCrimmon, played by Frazer Hines… And let’s just say it’s not the only link with Dr Who. So some view Outlander as a fanfic of Dr Who… (someone on Tumblr wrote a whole piece about this, with quotes and all).

Omgggg love when people have the receipts lol. So what do you think of books like Bride by Ali Hazelwood? Apparently this is a fanfic of Twilight and is now a published book. Is it whack for her to make money off it?

    • @camcam225
      @camcam225 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

@@litwithleigh For original work that started off as fanfic, I personally don’t think anyone who writes fanfic has a problem with it. Especially with AUs, where you can rename the characters, polish it and BOOM! you have an original story. So, no, I don’t think it’s whack that’s she’s making money off of it if she reworked it to make it into something original (otherwise Stephenie Meyer could sue her if it really felt too close to Twilight, which wouldn’t be a good thing for so many reasons 😆). As long as authors who do that don’t shit on fanfic writers later on, we’re good 😏
I think the ones who are most likely to make a fuss about that are “book snobs”. They just see fanfic as some product made by teen girls about their fantasies regarding a popular character or celebrity. So if they even hear a rumour that a book was originally published as a fanfic and then reworked to be officially published, well, obviously then the book is garbage and the publisher should have published an author with some original thoughts (they should diversify their offer, but that’s a different story). And 50 shades did not help (another that started off as Twilight fanfic…🙄).

When I was in middle school (age 11-13), I was super into Harry Potter like basically everyone else was at the time. I started writing fanfic in elementary school before knowing what fanfic even was. I liked the idea of expanding stories or changing things around to how I assumed they would be. Somehow I found out about the online fanfic community and I decided to post my stories on there. I wouldn't say anything I wrote was actually good, but they were alright for being written by an 11 year old.
Anyway, one day someone commented that I was a terrible writer, I should never write anything ever again, if that was what I thought was good enough to post online I should kms, and other really mean things. The internet was kind of new to me, but I had heard on the news about bullies on there. The library had a rule that if you posted anything mean online you'd be banned, so I ignored it and didn't respond. (Did I cry like a baby at night when no one was around? Absolutely, that shit hurt my feelings lol) Then it happened again, and again, and again, for YEARS. It lasted from 6th to 12th grade. The main person who bullied me? Cassandra Clare.
I thought maybe we were the same age at the time given how immature she was, but no, she in her THIRTIES doing that to an ELEVEN year old. It's not like I hid my age. My bio said I was 11. All my fanfic revolved around me being the age I was and the issues I faced at that age. The one time I asked her to please stop because she was being too mean, which I think I was 13 or 14 at the time, she got hundreds of people to attack me for "bullying" her when all I did was ask her to stop. Someone doxed me and a couple of people called my house at all hours of the night. It was so bad we had to change our phone number twice. I don't know if she had a direct role in that, but I still blame her for it as she very publicly asked people to attack my posts. Even when I went to other fanfic sites and wrote under different names she'd find me and start the same shit over again.
I've never read one of her books and refuse to. The one fanfic of hers I read was about umm... romantic love between family members... and that grossed me out. Anytime someone considers starting her series I try to divert them away from it. I used to explain to people what she did, but most of them were like "the past is in the past blah blah blah" which okay, fine, but she was the age I am now bullying children on the internet and very graphically detailing ways that I should kms. So now I find out what people hate in books and say it's a big part of the series. One of my friends gets grossed out by pregnancies so I told her pregnancies are a big part of the series and the birthing scenes are super long and extremely graphic. Another friends hate instalove and miscommunication, so I told her the whole series is about different characters experiencing instalove and the whole plot revolves around their miscommunications. Whatever people say they hate is what I tell them the book is about and I will pettily do that until the day I die lol.

I've never not read a book for a petty reason but I did delay reading a book by months for what could be considered petty. Another person on TH-cam left a comment when I announced I was reading a book. He said "This is the first book you've talked about that I've heard of and have. We are going to enjoy reading it together". He ASSUMED a buddy read. He didn't ask for one and neither did I invite anyone to buddy read. And I usually talk about obscure books and he assumed a buddy read of a popular book most on Booktube know of. So I frustrated him by delaying my read.

I'm sorry but the anti-self published one makes me mad. Just because something does or doesn't get picked up by a Publisher doesn't mean it is or isn't good. I mean, Colleen Hoover is published, and I think she's atrocious. And imagine all the marginalized authors who got rejected out of hand for not being the right demographic, now you're dismissing them out of hand because of an assumption while they're fighting to be seen. I had a history professor that would mention his book every chance he got. Granted, it's not a book I would gravitate towards normally, but he would insert the title every chance he had. He'd say a random fact about something that had nothing to do with the topic in class and then say "it's like in that book I wrote *insert book name here*" and sometimes he'd hold it up. Yeah... He carried it with him everywhere. He was also the kind of teacher that didn't do powerpoints. He typed up all the notes on a word doc at 8-10 sized font and expected people to be able to read it from every seat in the classroom, and no, he didn't put the notes online. He also would continuously scroll through the notes as he spoke, so he never stopped so people could write it down. The test questions were always written stupid too. He'd write a question, make it multiple choice, and then make more than one answer correct. The "correct" answer would end up being something we never even discussed and that wasn't in the text book, it's like when someone expects you to have read all the Star Wars or Star Trek novels to answer a question that has nothing to do with a movie trivia contest at a movie trivia contest. Obviously I'm still pissed about it and it's been years.

What if I told you… some self published books don’t even try to sell to a publisher? Traditional publishing takes a lot of advantage from authors, and very little people can actually live from what they’re paid.
Last year I only read indie books, and I only had 4 and 5 ⭐️ It all depends where you’re looking for books. You’re missing on great things if you refuse books just because they’re self published.

Ok one of my somewhat petty reasons that has nothing really to do with the author herself. I will never read Sally Rooneys Normal People because the setting is the Trinity University in Dublin to which i had applied. Unfortunately my application had a somehwat wrong address which meant it got delivered too late and that was the reason i was not admitted!!! Then resulted in me having a panic attack haha. Never applied in the years after cause i then decided it was too expenisve and in my home country you barely have to pay anything for uni. Yeah so i think reading all about that college campus will only leave an entirely bad taste in my mouth.

Lord of the Rings, books and movies. I was 14 and had worked my butt off all summer babysitting so I could buy my own laptop. I was so excited when I finally brought it home! But my step-dad said he would buy me a candy bar if I went 24 hours without using my computer, phone, or any other electronics. He made an exception for TV and convinced me to marathon Lord of the Rings with him. I had never seen it before, but I knew it was popular and figured I might as well.
I didnt realize they never end😑 my step dad is also the kind of nerdy type who wants to explain everything. Im the same way, but I got confused really fast. I fell asleep, so we watched the first one over again, then the second and third. My brain was so done with these short people and their problems. I also just wanted to try out my new computer, so i stuck it out. The chocolate bar was not worth it, but I was stubborn and would never say no to a bet. The only thing i remember liking was Golem. Now, as an adult, I love fantasy. But i refuse to read or watch Lord of the Rings because of that memory😅

I refuse to read books by any of the authors who participated in Sara Dessen drama. And I doubt I'll ever buy Sanderson's book so long as he's in his church. Cool that he has more progressive views now but he's still giving his anti-LGBTQIA+ church hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars every year.
Also agree with not reading authors who go off on not satisfactory ratings. Goodreads is not for the authors, if they want to read reviews there they should grow thicker skin and/or give away their access to social media. There's one horror author who was so annoyed his book ended up on one youtuber's worst books of the year list that he dedicated his next book to her (and I think made her a character who he brutalized it the book). Not in a good faith.

@@litwithleigh if you want to know about author drama/tea, check out Reads with Rachel's "Authors Behaving Badly" series. I know for a fact that she did a video about the Sara Dessen debacle. lots of authors got swept up in it and put on their clown makeup XD
personally, at least wrt the content in his books, Sanderson is nowhere near as bad as CoHo. and from what I understand, he doesn't try to stealthily insert any religious propaganda into his books (unlike, say, Stephenie Meyer), which is a pretty rare trait for religious authors. I don't really have beef with him as an individual, and he's definitely come a long way in evolving to have more progressive views. but as long as he's still tithing to the Mormon church, I'll continue to refuse to give him monetary support, same as I do with all Mormon authors. the claim has been made (idk if it was by him or someone else) that he's still staying to essentially try to change the church from the inside, but imo, that doesn't negate the harm caused by him giving money to them that's being used for anti-LGBTQIA+ purposes in the here and now. at the very least, he could try to off-set that impact by donating to charities that help the queer community, but I've never heard of him doing so. as such, i cannot in good conscience support him so long as he's still paying tithes to the Mormon church. :/

My "petty reasons" (And no, I'm not avocatong for any of these books to be banned due to my reasons. All books deserve to exist.):
Colleen Hoover? I won't fully pick up her books because how she romantizes DV and DA. Also, I can't stand her writing every time I read one sentence and the way she writes First person is abismal.
Sarah J Mass? Writing is annoying from the few sentences I've read, the way the relationships are handled from the reviews are absolutely something I hate. Also don't like how she also writes first person. (Yes, I'm very particular in my first persons as you'll notice. It has to feel like Night by Elie Wesel or the personality is very well expressed like Dreseden Files, The Lady Trent Series, Paranesi, Or Beastly and Bookish.)
Fourth Wing. I don't do just vibes, and there's other ligitamite issues I have with it that I won't go into here because super long. And Also... poorly written First person.
Twilight. It was the first book that grated on my annoyence of first person as it was also my first experience *with* first person at the time. But also... I did not apperciate how the relationship was protrayed and other things. (I watched the movies to support my friends but I was very much tired of how things were handled even when they did the comparison with the books) I tried Host, and while it's *slightly* better with the first person... I still wasn't connecting well with any of the charaters.
Game of Thrones and anything by GRRM. Lack of actual research of what he 'wants to realistically" protray. Plausable in his world? Maybe. Realistic like he says it was? no. (He did the Dorthaki *dirty* with what he was referencing since I'm now doing the research for the Mongolians and other nomadic tribes, using very harmful sterotypes.), I also have problems with how he protrays women and trauma. Being a survivor of SA myself, it really got under my skin with how things were handled. Also, I was hoping to at least get the thrill of horror since everyone kept on an on with how he does it in these books... but the opening scene was so boring to me and I never continued on with the books, and every time I've tried at different part, I just hated the books more. The first person wasn't horriable but I still wasn't wowed by it.
Anything else by Erika Johansen. Kingdom of Sweets pissed me off so badly. First person was decent actually. I had high hopes because of that and was quickly sorely disappointed with the *lack of research* she did on the retelling she was doing. I was actually genuinely intrested in the Horror take of the Nutcracker! The horror wasn't well done, She Queer coded a villain (Drosselmeyer), Her self insert of her 15 year old self was annoying as all hell, Slut shaming, Only put the setting in Russia because of the ballet, not doing the research why the Nutcracker was actually important in *German* tradition on chrismas, Ignored the fact that all the names were German... And didn't bother reading the origonal because apparently she thinks the Litaiture Genre is boring which she said in an interview. (I still gave this book a try in a buddy read because I was *HOPING* she did the horror part correctly but no....). I'm not reading any other books she written because of the atrocious handling of this retelling.

The thing about fanfiction is that it's generally really beneficial to the authors in my opinion. Imagine the Harry Potter series, for example. Do you truly believe it would be as alive and popular if there weren't dedicated people, keeping it alive, fixing problems with the original text, creating content unaffiliated with the horrid wench who wrote it, bridging the gaps between media releases and overall pouring their heart and soul into a community around the original works? Because I certainly don't think so. Fandom and fanfiction keep your works relevant and alive - not to mention that it's a huge compliment to you that you could inspire others to create. You don't have to engage with it yourself. I understand not wanting to be influenced by your readers' ideas too much and I get that seeing certain interpretations of the characters that inevitably carry a part of you within themselves can be weird. But trampling all over your supporters and their ideas is just disrespectful And shooting yourself in the foot. But maybe I just think that because I'm involved in the scene.

Most petty - real people on newly published covers, esp. when it's either the most generic face or it looks like AI. Then - how many pages are in a book. Over 400 for a romance/mystery gives me a pause to reconsider, over 500 legit reading through reviews; for fantasy it's 500 and 600; too many books feel fillery or in a need of a better editor.

I don’t think I’ve ever not read a book for truly petty reasons, but others may disagree. In almost every case I can think of where I refuse to read a book, it’s because I can tell it’s going to bash me over the head with p0litics. For example, I refuse to read any other Ali Hazelwood books because I found the constant feminism in Love, Theoretically to be absolutely insufferable. Maybe some would find that petty, but I find authors who unsubtly barrage me with their opinions like that to be more petty. I recently read Into The Drowning Deep and I’m not sure I want to read anything else by that author for a similar reason. That story would have been sooo much better if it weren’t for the constant finger waggling and signaling about cl!mate change and d!sability, IMO. I don’t mind authors expressing their opinions through their writing, and I even think that’s part of the point of fiction. But there should be a subtle art to it, IMO. When it doesn’t even attempt to be subtle about it, it’s a huge turn off to me.
Also, my Neopets WERE my friends. That took me back... The real question is what forum was Dan Brown in? I was mostly in Fan Clubs back in the day and I never saw him. Sounds like a GC troll. Pretty sure I read The Davinci Code while I was still playing Neopets, probably around 15-16, so it might not have necessarily been an adult. Some of us started reading books like that too early in life… When I was on Neopets as a young teen, I pretended to be Hannibal Lecter, so… 🤣

Totally understand about the politics. Don't read Holly by Stephen King lol. Loreth Anne White's The Maids Diary is also pretty political. I think the issue is when the characters have no personality beyond their political ideologies. When the author is virtue signalling with the characters' political beliefs, I'm over it.
