Interesting how matter-of-fact genuine heroes are about their deeds....contrast this guy with the Parkland shooting campus cop, hiding behind a car, and allowing kids & people to be shot. Different generation, I guess.

He was surprised that he was the bravest one to get up to the elevtor when so many others should have already been up there. (I think another video mentioned the other guy with him was a civilian. Or at least one of the others first up there was a civilian.)

Ramiro Martinez, Houston McCoy, Allen Crum and Jerry Day are the 4 individuals who went up the tower. Martinez and McCoy are the only two credited with killing Whitman. Martinez had a pistol and McCoy had a shotgun.

Martinez talks about how he was taught to aim for center of mass, just as all law enforcement is trained today as well. Says he aimed that way as he fired his revolver and could see he was making hits, says he is irritated how some people say he missed, says he has "documentation" that his shots hit the sniper, Charles Whitman. Fact is, the autopsy on Whitman's body showed that they found ZERO hits from his revolver on the body. Not one bullet was found in his body, only shotgun pellets. His death was caused by shotgun blast to the face/head, from Officer Houston McCoy. I guess he believes the autopsy was mistaken. I give Martinez all the credit in the world for going up that tower to stop Whitman. But the fact is that he missed all his revolver shots, and then officer Houston McCoy blasted Whitman with his shotgun to stop/kill him. Then Martinez grabbed the shotgun from McCoy and fired a blast into the dead/dying body of Whitman. Then he ran down out of the tower and was heard claiming, "I got him, I got him." He has always claimed that he is the man who got Whitman and ended the mass shooting. The Austin PD brass told McCoy they needed a hispanic hero and so were going to let Martinez' version be the one they would go with. McCoy was a very humble man and never publicly disputed Martinez' glory grab false narrative. Martinez rode the hero worship into the Texas Rangers ("Ranger Ray") and never acknowledged what really happened up on the tower. Another interview I watched of him shows him actually saying that after he "shot" Whitman with his revolver, he had to prompt McCoy to fire his shotgun, and then McCoy "finally" shot him. So yes, Ramiro Martinez is certainly a hero for his actions that day for running up the tower to confront the sniper, but it is a shame he has always chosen to falsely distort the truth for his own aggrandizement. He loves sitting in interviews perpetuating the false version and basking in the hero worship. Suppose it ever occurred to Martinez that if McCoy had not been with him, that after be banged away with his revolver and missed every shot, that he would have been retreating to reload (they didn't have revolver speedloaders in 1966), he could have become another victim of Whitman? You think he ever thanked McCoy? That would have spoiled his glory ride.

They should make an updated major motion picture of this event the movie made in the 70s looks much different than a newer one would be. It's a chilling day in US history that should be told as a reminder of the horror people went through that day I bet it would definitely draw a crowd compared to what's out there now

No "Active Shooter" should live through their ordeal - offing themselves is the ultimate p^s^y act, they should feel what they dish out, until they feel that pang of anxiety & blackness encircles their ending life...

You are correct, latinos are not cowards any more than any other race. But the main cop in charge at Uvalde was a latino, and a coward. Just sayin'. And Martinez is lying about what happened at the top of the tower. Officer McCoy actually stopped Whitman with a shotgun blast to his face. Martinez missed all 6 shots from his revolver. The autopsy shows ZERO bullets in his body from a pistol.

Someone else in the comments mentioned this. This officer was 1000% courageous but they say the initial shots he fired unfortunately missed and the other officer actually shot him and then officer Martinez shot the shotgun at his already dead corpse. We don’t know the truth but regardless I feel it doesn’t matter and that all the cops and civilians who put their lives on the line are all amazing hero’s!
