  • Beginning this past Monday, Texas state law requires all public universities to allow licensed concealed handguns owners to carry their firearms on campus. Ironically, the new "Campus Carry" law went into effect on the 50th anniversary of the infamous mass shooting at the University of Texas at Austin. Anna Werner talks to people who were there that fateful day in 1966, and to the creator of an acclaimed new documentary, "Tower."

He had a footlocker full of guns and ammunition. He hauled it up the tower with a dolly. He posed as a maintenance man to get up there. Security back then was pretty laxed. Nowadays, it's a tighter security system on the campus.

I remember this as a 15 year old kid and the details I remember was that Whitman left a note for someone to see why he was acting this way. Autopsy results showed he had a brain tumor. The Life article stated that Martinez shot Whitman first and McCoy shot him with a shotgun just about the same time and that ended the shooting. I also remember all the people getting their guns out of their trucks and returning fire. I can see these videos to this day and the pictures in Life magazine as if it was yesterday. We did not need rapid police forces back then, just good ole boys with their guns in their possession to try and stop this carnage!

Houston McCoy, who happens to be my grandmother's sister's kid, was the one who killed Whitman and it's a fairly distasteful for this guy Martinez to act as if he's the one who is getting all the credit. While he certainly deserves credit for teaming up with McCoy to confront the shooter let's get the facts straight if we're going to tell this story.

they didn't 'climb' the tower either. they took an elevator. then took the stairs from the 27th flr. to the 28th flr .if they took the stairs all the way, the heat would've hit them awful hard.

Imagine waiting for an elevator and then armed cops approach and say “we gotta use this, you can’t come with us.”
Did the elevator make any stops? Was There somebody else on one of the upper floors waiting for an elevator only for it to open and the armed cops say “sorry, use another elevator.”
Must’ve been awkward inside the elevator too. Must’ve been awkward walking up those last two floors.

Look up the history of the united states, it's not just because of home invasions, as much as guns help in scenarios like that its more a repellent to the government should they one day completely turn on the people and take your freedoms away, it's the real reason for why so many corrupt politicians in America want to rob them of gun rights, it's not to "protect" people, there will always be crazies that can make their own weaponry - it's why a strict country like Japan where a tiny minority have legal firearms just had an assassination with a HOME-MADE firearm.
Not sure how old you are, but hopefully one day you'll figure out why self-defense matters, and not just against thieves in balaclavas, preferably before it becomes necessary to know.
